Enterprise Technology Innovation

  • “Stubborn inflation and rising interest rates.” Yet, historically…
  • Tough times yield innovation, much of which “comes from the smallest startups.” During The Great Recession of 2008-2009, we got 4G mobile broadband, smartphones, and tablets and notebook computers. As a 2023 recession looms: 5G, autonomous systems, connected intelligence, quantum computing.
  • 5G is “upgrading the global economy.”
  • While “supply chains remain vulnerable, chip inventories are rising.”

Metaverse/Web 3.0

  • “The Metaverse is closer than you think. It’s the next generation of the Internet.”
  • “Like the internet in the 1990s, a real trend,” not just the crude video game graphics we’ve seen in Meta’s rollout.

South Florida Sports Talk Personality Jeff DeForrest Joins Greenlite Ventures

Greenlite Ventures, Inc. announces that sports talk radio personality Jeff “Defo” DeForrest joins the company as director of podcast operations. In this role, DeForrest will work exclusively for the company as it is set to launch GRNL’s Sports and Gaming Network (SGN) in the coming weeks. The company says, “SGN’s first weekly podcast will feature Defo and Las Vegas sports betting legend Brandon Lang, who was the subject of the hit movie Two for the Money starring Matthew McConaughey as the real-life Brandon Lang and Al Pacino playing his mentor. As legal sports wagering continues to surge across America, SGN will soon be airing daily podcasts featuring some of the most knowledgeable, entertaining and successful handicappers in all areas of sports betting. Defo is currently developing and negotiating a wide range of podcast and licensing deals with a number of well-known names in broadcasting, horse racing, and sports wagering.”

Broadcaster Dick Chapin Passes at 99

Dick Chapin died at age 99 on January 5 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Nebraska Broadcasters Association says Chapin got his start in broadcasting in March 1953 when he joined KFOR, Lincoln as an account executive.  He soon rose to general manager for KFOR-AM and KFOR-TV. In 1958 he was named VP of the stations’ owner, Stuart Investment Company. In 1989, he formed his own media brokerage firm, Chapin Enterprises. He also went into station ownership purchasing radio station KSYZ, Grand Island which he helped manage and later sold in 1999. Chapin served as chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters, a position that capped 11 years of NAB service. In 1974, he received the NAB Distinguished Service Award. He also was elected chairman of the Radio Advertising Bureau in 1983.

KMET Legend “Paraquat” Kelley Reaches Out from Hospital Bed for Ukraine

For a decade and a half back in the 70s and 80s, now-defunct Metromedia album rocker KMET was a dominant musical and cultural force in Southern California. Memories of the historic station still reverberate today among its former staff and thousands of listeners. One of the stand-out personalities in the station’s amazing stable of talent was the dynamic and quirky newsman/morning co-host, Patrick “Paraquat” Kelley.  Tragically, 22 years ago, Kelley, a once-dynamic figure, was diagnosed with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis leaving him today a total quadriplegic in residence at the Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA.  Kelley sent the following text and accompanying photo to TALKERS:

As many of you know, Progressive Multiple Sclerosis has left me a total quadriplegic… but my brain still functions.  There’s no way we can witness the mass murder of the residents of Ukraine and not want to help. I have a caregiver here who’s from Ukraine and the pictures are of her nephew who’s a doctor at a hospital in Kiev that’s been the target of Russian missile strikes.  I gave her the T-shirt and cap so that it would authenticate my request.  We can all help.  They may have pulled the plug on the station but they can’t touch our hearts.  Click on the link to donate and pass it on. How Hot Is Podcasting?

How hot is podcasting? The topic dominated a CES session billed in broader terms: “The Disruption: Media, Platforms & Advertising.” Panelists – executives from social media, major content brands, and radio mega-groups – also discussed “linear” (live) programming and streaming video. But all kept coming back to podcasting, which iHeartMedia CMO Gayle Troberman characterized as “exploding, driving massive growth in audio.”

Not unexpected, since her company is a major player. But, from the other side of the equation, World Wrestling Entertainment SVP Craig Stimmel acknowledges that, post-pandemic, “habits have changed as to where to go” for media; so “we want to make sure our content is everywhere.” His stars are among celebrities whom podcasting connects with fans in what Troberman describes as “live, human, unscripted conversation with people you come to know;” particularly welcome post-pandemic-shutdown. “The more isolated and alone people feel, the more audio delivers intimacy.”

It’s not a radio show

Every panelist spoke of “authenticity,” rather than the slick, polished texture of traditional AM/FM programming. SXM Media SVP Lizzie Widhelm challenges broadcasters: “How can we let go of our playbook, and walk away from norms that have been comfy-cozy?”

“More creators coming into audio than ever before” from politics, sports, and other walks of life, “to engage more deeply.” Audacy CMO Paul Suchman says that delivers advertisers “super-relevant, contextually relevant” places to tell their stories. So “this is a medium that deserves GREAT creative,” not just audio of a TV spot. “Advertising that gets ‘inserted’” doesn’t work as well as “the deep human connection” of podcaster’s very personal delivery. Thus “the lowest ad-skipping rates of any media.”

Podcasting plusses

Just as music streams offer lots more variety than safe-list FMs, spoken-word podcasting is a topical cornucopia compared to talk radio’s largely political fare.

And panelists ticked-off other advantages podcasts offer advertisers:

  • “Quicker and much less-expensive production than video.”
  • “Lower CPM” ad rates, increasingly attractive as recession likely looms.
  • “Really young, and diverse audiences coming into audio in a big way.”
  • “The audiences you’re not getting on TV anymore.”

“Voice has always been how humans communicate”

Troberman describes the iHeart app Talkback feature, which listeners use to send messages stations play, a tool some of my client stations have built-into their apps.

And this interactivity isn’t just a media thing. Audacy’s Suchman mentioned how drivers now converse with Cadillac’s state-of-the-art dashboard: “The next phase of computing will be voice-driven.” Yet – accustomed as we have become to dealing with supermarket self-checkout and other robots almost everywhere – the “intimacy,” “authenticity,” and “diversity” panelists speak of suggest that, as iHeart’s Troberman reckons, “the future of voice is the future of two-way communication via audio.”

LiveOne Slashes $5 Million in Costs; Plans to Spin Out PodcastOne

Digital content platform LiveOne announces that “as part of its focus on generating cash from operations on a consolidated basis, (it) is implementing additional cost and expense reductions from both operations and corporate overhead, which is anticipated to increase the previously implemented annual cost savings to a total of over $30 million in its fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.  On December 29, 2022, the company revealed that Courtside Group, Inc. (dba PodcastOne) has filed an S-1 with the SEC for its planned spin-out and special dividend to LiveOne’s stockholders of record on January 16, 2023. The company says that PodcastOne is expected to record revenue of $25 million for the first nine months of fiscal 2023 ending December 31, 2022.

LiveOne adds, “PodcastOne’s proprietary internal Content Management System allows creators and producers to track metrics about shows on an episode-by-episode basis.  CMS is the platform where podcast episodes are uploaded, RSS feeds are created and distributed to listening platforms, and the listening data is analyzed and displayed in a dashboard for the creators/producers to see. This fully owned and operated enterprise CMS rivals other paid platforms such as Megaphone (Spotify-owned), Art19 (Amazon-owned) and SimpleCast (SiriusXM/Pandora-owned). The CMS’ day-to-day operation and maintenance is managed by a vendor we contract with and is constantly being updated to be a best-in-class system. LiveOne remains committed to spinning-out PodcastOne as a separate public company to be listed on a national exchange. In connection with such spin-out, LiveOne has moved the record date to Jan. 16, 2023 for PodcastOne’s special dividend to LiveOne’s stockholders of record. In addition, LiveOne intends to explore spinning-out SlackerOne as a separate public company during its 2024 fiscal year.”

According to ongoing research from TALKERS magazine, the most-talked-about story in news/talk media for the week of January 2 – 6, 2023 was the turmoil surrounding U.S. Rep. St. Louis Area AC KSLQ Flips to All Podcast Format

50-year veteran radio broadcaster Brad Hildebrand, owner/operator of KSLQ-FM 104.5 – a St Louis area signal – tells TALKERS he has flipped the hot AC station to an all-podcast format (1/1) operating under the brand name “Podcastrr.”   The format consists of an aggregation of already-existing podcasts with the special feature of giving listeners and clients the opportunity to produce, host, launch and promote their own paid podcasts on the platform.  Licensed to Washington, MO, KSLQ’s 104.5 signal covers St. Charles County, Franklin County, Warren County, western St. Louis County and northwestern Jefferson County. iHeartMedia Launches “1190 iHeartSports DC”

iHeartMedia Washington, DC announces the launch of sports talk and sports betting station “1190 iHeartSports DC – The DMV’s Best Bet on Sports” broadcasting on WTSD-AM, W284CQ, and WWDC-HD2. The company says programming will consist of FOX Sports Radio weekdays from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm and VSiN, The Sports Betting Network content weekdays from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am and on weekends.

iHeartMedia region president Aaron Hyland says, “We are excited to announce the launch of ‘1190 iHeartSports DC.’ We are thrilled to deliver this incredible lineup of the biggest names in sports talk audio to the DMV including exclusive Washington Commanders content utilizing 1190 AM, 104.7 FM and 101.1 HD2 and iHeartMedia’s unmatched scale and reach.” The FOX Sports Radio lineup includes “Two Pros and a Cup of Joe” featuring former Washington Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington, followed by Dan Patrick. “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd begins at 12:00 noon and Doug Gottlieb airs from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Laura Mayer Joins ABC Audio as Executive Producer of Podcast Programming

ABC Audio brings Laura Mayer aboard to serve as executive producer of podcast programming. ABC News president Kim Godwin says in a memo to staffers, “Laura Mayer will be the creative lead of our stellar podcast team, which has big plans for 2023, including the launch of a new true crime series next week and the return of “Life Out Loud with LZ Granderson” later this month. She will work closely with Josh Cohan, director of podcast programming, to develop ABC Audio’s content strategy and then implement that strategy with the production team, overseeing the process from greenlight to publish.” Mayer was most recently COO of the production company Three Uncanny Four Productions – a joint venture with Sony Music. She’s also served as executive producer of new show development at Stitcher.

New England Public Media Brings Monte Belmonte Aboard for New Radio Show and Podcast

New England Public Media tells TALKERS that it is hiring Western Massachusetts morning personality Monte Belmonte as host and executive producer of a new radio show and podcast “celebrating life in Western Massachusetts.” Belmonte has been hosting “Mornings with Monte” at Saga Communications’ triple A WRSI, Turners Falls, MA “93.9 The River.” Also joining Belmonte at NEPM is Kaliis Smith, who served as evening personality at WRSI and served as a regular guest on Belmonte’s show. With NEPM, Smith will be the show’s digital producer and will join Belmonte on air.

NEPM president Matt Abramovitz says, “When you listen to Monte Belmonte, you hear not only a great host with a devotion to his craft, but also a person who is committed to building and bolstering his community. Sharing the unique voices and stories of our region and using the airwaves for the common good is what public media is all about. KFI, Los Angeles Makes New Year Program Schedule Changes

Los Angeles news/talk giant KFI adjusted its program schedule that took effect this week. The iHeartMedia station didn’t issue a press release but the station’s website reveals the following changes: Bill Handel’s morning drive show is airing from 6:00 am to 9:00 am – following Jennifer Jones Lee’s “Wake Up Call” that airs from 5:00 am to 6:00 am; “Gary & Shannon” air from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm; the “John & Ken” program moves from its longtime afternoon drive slot to the 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm slot while evening host Tim Conway Jr. moves to the 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm daypart; and weekend talk host Mo’Kelly moves into the 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm slot. Premiere Networks’ “Coast to Coast AM” with George Noory is heard in the late-night slot.

Darlene Park Named Vice President/Market Manager for Cumulus Indianapolis

Cumulus Media announces that it has appointed Darlene Park as vice president/market manager, Cumulus Indianapolis. Park joins Cumulus Media from Bonneville Denver, where she was director of sales for the company’s four-station group. Prior to that, she was general sales manager for Entercom Denver (now Audacy) and was previously GSM for Clear Channel Chicago (now iHeartMedia). iHeartMedia Unveils New Deals for Voice Assistant and Automotive App Integrations

The company reveals five new integrations for the iHeartRadio digital audio app. Two of these are with electric vehicle companies Fisker Auto and VinFast as the iHeartRadio app will be included in the infotainment systems of those companies’ cars. Mobility AI firm Cerence teams with iHeartRadio to provide voice recognition for the app in vehicles while Native Voice – an on-demand voice assistant library that enables users to communicate directly by voice – collaborates with iHeartRadio for voice recognition to access content. Also, iHeartRadio is now integrated into the TomTom Digital Cockpit for seamless use on the vehicle display.

KIRO-FM, Seattle Talk Host Dori Monson Passes at 61

Longtime Seattle talk radio personality Dori Monson died unexpectedly on Saturday (12/31) at a Seattle hospital after suffering a cardiac event on December 29. KIRO-FM, Seattle owner Bonneville International and the Monson family stated that Dori Monson had been dealing with health issues over the last few years. Bonneville says Monson hosted “the top-rated ‘Dori Monson Show’ airing 12:00 noon-3:00 pm on KIRO-FM. He was 61 years old and leaves behind a beloved wife and three adult children.” Monson attended the University of Washington and worked at KING-TV and KING Radio before joining KIRO in the early 1990s. Monson was a legendary talk radio presence in the Seattle market and will be sorely missed.

WTOP, Washington, DC Debuts New Morning Team

All-news WTOP-FM, Washington, DC unveils its new morning drive anchor team as Michelle Basch and John Aaron begin hosting the program that airs from 5:00 am to 10:00 am. Basch and Aaron take over for Bruce Alan and Joan Jones, who exited the station after taking the voluntary buyout from owner Hubbard BroadcastingBasch has been with the station since joining in 2006 as a reporter, and Aaron started his career with WTOP in 2007. Basch comments, “After years of working as part of WTOP’s wonderful night crew, I am so lucky to get the opportunity to help Washingtonians wake up and get informed every weekday morning. The fact that I’m teaming up with John – a really nice guy whose work I’ve always admired – makes it even more exciting!” Aaron adds, “It’s truly surreal to now be anchoring weekday mornings for the station I grew up listening to. I look forward to spending more mornings with our listeners, bringing them the important news of the day and having some fun along the way.” WTOP director of news and programming Julia Ziegler states, “Michelle and John bring years of experience and incredible news judgment to mornings. Syndicated Host Rob Carson Debuts on ‘The Pulse of New Hampshire’ Network

Newsmax Radio’s “The Rob Carson Show” begins airing live today (1/3) on Binnie Media’s multi-signal network of news/talk stations branded “The Pulse of New Hampshire.” Carson’s program airs from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm on WTSN-FM, Dover; WTPL-FM, Hillsborough; WEMJ-FM, Laconia; as well as two HD2 signals. Newsmax says the network reaches a combined population of nearly a million listeners. Newsmax Radio CEO Lee Kinberg says, “I know firsthand the power of Binnie Media’s talk stations and we look forward to working with their great team and bringing Rob Carson to one of the most politically influential audiences in the country.” Binnie Media VP of programming Michael Czarnecki comments, “In the world of talk radio, we find so much of the same programming. Radio Personality John Osterlind Dies at 55

According to a report from WWL-TV, New Orleans, radio host John Osterlind died late last week at age 55.  Authorities found him unresponsive at his apartment on Thursday (12/29) and at this time the cause of death is unknown. Louisiana Talk Host Moon Griffon Joins WBRP-FM, Baton Rouge for Late Mornings

Talk radio pro Moon Griffon begins hosting the 9:00 am to 11:00 am talk show on Guaranty Media’s news/talk WBRP-FM, Baton Rouge “Talk 107.3” today (1/3). Guaranty Media VP and general manager Gordy Rush states, “We are excited to add Moon Griffon to the ‘Talk 107.3’ weekday lineup and increase the amount of local programming. The Hayride calls Moon Griffon the state’s ‘most prominent talk host,’ and we think the timing is perfect with the upcoming elections in 2023.” Griffon’s addition to the lineup forces some changes with the “FOX News Rundown” moving to a 4:00 am start and FOX News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show” airing from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. WBRP morning host and program director Brian Haldane adds, “With Moon’s voice and opinions on Louisiana politics, it just makes sense for him to be on in the Capital City. This means we’ll be covering Louisiana for five straight hours from 6:00 am to 11:00 am every weekday morning.”

St. Louis News Pro Larry Conners Joins NewsTalkSTL

Next Monday (1/9), St. Louis market television and radio personality Larry Conners joins Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s conservative talk simulcast KNBS-FM, Bowling Green; K270BW, Bellefontaine; and KLJY-HD2, Clayton to host “The Larry Conners USA Daily Report” airing at 6:00 pm nightly. Additionally, the station will air “The Conners Commentary” feature at 12:03 pm, and 3:30 pm. Conners says, “The fabric of my journalistic soul still requires that I am fair, but now, I freely express my opinions. I am thrilled to join the ‘NewsTalkSTL’ family and be part of the city’s newest and fastest-growing radio station.” Conners anchored St. Louis television news broadcasts from 1975 to 2014 before making the move to radio. Station president of programming Jeff Allen says, “This is the first, major change to our weekday line up since signing on a year and a half ago. That speaks to how significant we feel adding Larry is. Larry Conners is a strong, local, conservative voice that needs to be heard.”

My Top Five Sales Tips to Make 2023 Your Best Year Ever!

2023 is here and those of us in radio sales have our work cut out for us.  Hope the following tips are helpful to you.

1. Celebrate your client’s joyous moments and victories. It could be the birth of a grandchild, birthday or company expansion. Take time to buy a baby gift, send flowers or even just a card. One in the mail is better, but an electronic message can do the trick as well. I prefer the ones sent via snail mail, because they are always opened. It shows that you made an effort. Back in my early 20s, a colleague pulled out a tattered calendar and asked me if I knew what it was. Of course, I didn’t. She told me this was where she kept her list of clients’ birthdays. I don’t remember her name, but I do remember the tip.

2. Grow your existing client base. One of our top clients for 2023 was one of our more modest buys in 2022. Take the time to listen to everyone and find out what is working (and what isn’t). Then try to match their needs with what you have to offer. Make that difficult trip to visit them in person. You can have a great phone relationship, but there is still nothing like face-to-face. It forever changes the relationship. Zoom is not the same as in-person, obviously. If your customers seem unwilling to meet, suggest lunch. It will be well worth it.

3. Don’t take your long-term clients for granted. Our longest-running advertiser has been with us for more than 25 years. Keep the copy fresh and suggest new marketing ideas.  Those bedrock clients are your greatest strength. Without them, you cannot succeed. As in a marriage, don’t stop trying.  Let them know you value them and care. Call them once a month and not just when the invoice is past due. Email them an article about their business. Wish them a Happy New Year. It’s not too late. Even if it is just a text.

4. Network with your friends. One of our top clients came from a random phone call from a friend. It wasn’t even about advertising. He was asking for a favor about something totally different. When he began talking about the person who wanted a favor and was telling me about his business, I instantly realized that this company would be a great advertiser for the network. The client has been with us for years now and as a result of that one simple call advertises on radio throughout the country. You don’t know who knows who. Listen to your friends. Your next big client could be right in front of you.

5. My last tip may be controversial but is critical if you truly want to make 2023 your best year ever. I don’t believe in the old saying, “The customer is always right.” We’ve all known clients that are verbally abusive, liars and just an overall pain-in-the-you-know-what. There comes a point when if you are spending hours daily kowtowing to just one client, you have to consider the time it is taking away from new business, other customers and also your own personal mental health. If someone in any part of your life is sucking the living energy out of you, you need to move on, or you will remain stagnant and 2023 won’t be your best year ever.

Whatever else you do in 2023, remember to work hard, have fun and of course never give up. Happy 2023!

The calendar has officially changed. Hopefully your checks will start saying 2023 and it’s time to dig in and get back to work. Wait, does anyone still write checks? For sure your Q1 plan is complete and ready for action.

Let’s look at the first two major events in Q1, as each represents sales opportunities for virtually every radio format.

The Super Bowl is in five weeks. You don’t need to be selling sports talk radio or the gameday play-by-play to capitalize on the most-viewed sporting event in the media. The audience numbers connected to this event are now legendary. Nearly 1 billion viewers watched the 10 highest-rated TV broadcasts of the Super Bowl. As we sell the value and results of radio/audio, the TV numbers simply support the social impact of the event. Whether your radio station will broadcast the game or not, there is a sales opportunity for the seller pitching the right package to the right advertiser. This year the competition for local ad dollars will be heightened as we deal with inflation, recession, and lingering supply chain issues. The traditional “bars and cars,” big screen TV sales and even gameday gear-up may all be impacted at the local advertiser level. Sharpen your pencil and package creatively with all assets on board.

Valentine’s Day in six weeks. We are projected to spend nearly $ 24 billion on Valentine’s Day – or about $175 per person. That puts Valentine’s Day neck-and-neck with Mother’s Day. So, wining and dining, flowers, jewelry, spa day, greeting cards, gift certificates, it’s all part of this great tradition that has defined February for nearly 1,600 years. Yes, you can go back to the Romans for the first celebration. For sure the Romans had a way to promote the Valentine’s Day festivals that spread the word far and wide leading to the traditions we have today. The sales opportunity connected to Valentine’s Day is a simple four step process:

1. Cover the traditional categories.
2. Open your thinking to new opportunities.
3. Be ready to respond to “We sell out, anyway.”
4. Full asset packaging.

Getting back in the saddle and regaining your sales rhythm may take a few cranks of the engine. But like riding a bike, the muscle memory kicks in and before you know it, you’re coasting again. Happy Selling!

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Its seems the current economic cycle is being driven by a sweeping round of cutbacks and strategic business re-focus now moving into the mainstream.

From Disney and Meta (parent of Facebook) to Walmart, the pressure is on to deliver positive performance in a cloudy economy. In plain English, it’s time to cut costs and push suppliers to share the pain. Yet prices continue to go up. Maybe it’s the fault of COVID’s unpredictable economic impact or some international collusion, or better yet, just a plain old foggy crystal ball in the CEO’s office. My vote is all of the above. But what does any of this have to do with your day-to-day sales? The short answer is: Everything.

BLOCK ISLAND, RI — “But I’m doing a whole SHOW, not just the ‘snack-size’ episodes you recommend,” one podcaster wrote, after reading last week’s column, itself conspicuously succinct.

While I continue to heed the listener research which recommends (forgive me) “less is more,” I myself subscribe to several longer-form podcasts. My concern about going-longer is the same caution I offer to eager beavers who ask me about launching a weekend show: It’s a lot of work.
