Chicago Public Media – operator of WBEZ-FM, Chicago – is phasing out its Vocalo radio station and is laying off 14 staffers. Chicago Public Media chief executive Matt Moog says, “These are painful decisions that affect our valued colleagues. Because they did not reach the scale needed to generate revenue to cover expenses, Vocalo and the podcast content development unit will be scaled back and folded into the newsroom.”

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One, the exclusive national audio broadcast partner of the NCAA, is presenting comprehensive live audio coverage of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Final Four and national championship game live from Phoenix in both English and Spanish. The network will also broadcast the Women’s Final Four and national championship game live from Cleveland.

The Black Effect Podcast Network and comedian Lil Duval announce, “Conversations With Unc,” a limited series podcast that will feature casual and in-depth talks about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness from an Uncle’s perspective. Black Effect Podcast Network president of creative development and production Dollie S. Bishop says, “We all need moments of laughter, but we also crave spaces for growth and reflection. Our new podcast, ‘Conversations with Unc’ will blend humor with wisdom and offer unique stories and advice in ways that resonate beyond the punchline. We’re excited to collaborate with Lil Duval on this new series and even more excited to see how these conversations will uplift and encourage listeners.”

iHeartMedia and the National Basketball Association announce the addition of two shows to its multi-year podcast partnership, including the debut of “NBA DNA with Hannah Storm.” Additionally, Vince Carter brings “The VC Show with Vince Carter” to the NBA Podcast Network for its much-anticipated season two.

SiriusXM, the exclusive audio broadcaster of the Masters Tournament, announces its extensive broadcast plans for Masters week, April 6-14, with live coverage of all four days of tournament play, daily Masters-focused talk programming, specials and more. SiriusXM president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein says, “The Masters is always one of the most anticipated weeks on the sports calendar, and our team at SiriusXM prides themselves on bringing our listeners across the country closer to everything happening that week at Augusta National. We’ll cover the action on the course from the first tee shot on Thursday through the presentation of the Green Jacket on Sunday, and bring you news from Augusta National throughout the week, interviews with competitors and much more.”

FOX Nation debuts a new true crime series, “Unsolved with James Patterson,” in which the acclaimed author examines three unsolved homicide investigations: the cases of Nanette Krentel of Louisiana, Elizabeth Salgado of Utah, and Brian Egg of California. Patterson says, “I was totally gripped by these cases. The fact that they are real-life stories – and that we may help bring justice to the victims and their families – is very special.”

The Podcast Academy honors New Hampshire Public Radio senior reporter Lauren Chooljian with the award for Best Reporting at its 2024 Awards for Excellence in Audio for her reporting on the longform investigative podcast, “The 13th Step.” Chooljian says, “I’ve been floored by all the recognition ‘The 13th Step’ has received lately, and I take it as a sign that despite the difficulties in our industry right now, there are so many people out there who deeply value in-depth, impactful audio reporting. iHeartMedia Washington, DC announces an extension to their partnership agreement with D.C. United to produce radio broadcasts for all of the club’s 2024 Major League Soccer regular season matches, effective through the end of the 2024 season. All of D.C. United’s 2024 Major League Soccer regular season matches will be available live on WTSD-AM “1190 iHeart Sports DC,” 101.1 HD2, and the iHeartRadio App.

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One will broadcast live coverage of the NCAA Men’s Sweet Sixteen and the Men’s Elite Eight on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 5:00 pm ET with the pregame show and on Sunday, March 31 with the pregame show at 1:00 pm ET.  Westwood One’s coverage of the NCAA Men’s Final Four will begin on Saturday, April 6 with “The Final Four Show” at 3:00 pm ET and at 6:30 pm ET with the “Championship Monday” show prior to the National Championship Game on Monday, April 8. Westwood One is also broadcasting all of the games of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

The Kansas House passes House Concurrent Resolution 5026 that endorses the Federal AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. Kansas Association of Broadcasters president Allison Mazzei says, “The passage of this resolution tells Congress that Kansans want AM radio in vehicles. Radio serves as a cornerstone of communication, providing essential information and ensuring public safety across our state.”

A new eight-part podcast series titled, “Who Killed the Video Star? The Story of MTV,” debuts from Audacy Podcasts. The series explores the cultural history, impact, and phenomenon of MTV. It is hosted by former MTV VJ and Esquire editor-at-large Dave Holmes.

Audacy Pittsburgh raises funds to provide more than 276,000 meals for people in need through Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The “Giant Eagle Feed the Need Radiothon” – produced by news/talk KDK-AM, sports talk KDKA-FM, and their three music branded sister stations directly benefits those dealing with food insecurity in the Pittsburgh region. Audacy first launched the radiothon in April 2020 in response to the need during the COVID-19 pandemic and has helped provide upwards of 3.3 million meals in the past five years.

Salem Media Group Releases 2023 Annual Report

Salem Media Group’s total net revenue for the full year of 2023 was $258.6 million, a decrease of 3.1% from the full year of 2022, according to its just-released annual report. The company saw operating expenses rise from 2022 to 2023 and took a considerable impairment charge on its long-term assets that factored heavily into it reporting a net loss of $43.3 million in 2023, compared to the net loss of $3.2 million it posted in 2022. Salem operated three business segments: broadcast, digital, and publishing.im The company states, “Net broadcast revenue decreased 3.7%, or $7.6 million, principally due to a $7.3 million decline in national and local spot advertising revenue. Spot advertising revenue has been declining in the industry due to reduced time spent listening, particularly on AM radio stations. Also, the political revenue decreased $3.6 million, or 61.5% to $2.3 million from $5.9 million. This decrease was partially offset by an increase in our broadcast digital revenue which increased $1.5 million or 4.1% due to increases from Salem Podcast Network, Salem News Channel and digital marketing services through Salem Surround. On a Same Station basis, net broadcast revenue decreased 4.0%, or $8.2 million, which reflects these items net of the impact of stations acquisitions and dispositions.” On the digital side, the company reports, “Net digital media revenue increased 0.7%, or $0.3 million. Net digital advertising revenue decreased due to Facebook algorithms that limit political content, the growing use of browsers that block third-party cookies limiting advertising, and the overall state of the economy that has weakened demand for advertising resulting in a lower number of advertisements and a reduction in rates.” Salem’s 2023 annual report can be found here.

FOX Nation debuts a new special titled, “Prisoner of Putin,” on Thursday (3/28), one day before the one-year anniversary of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich’s arrest and detainment in Russia. The special will provide an in-depth look into Gershkovich’s life and his courage and resilience throughout the last year. “New Jersey 101.5” to Present Youth Sports Town Hall

This Thursday (3/28) at 7:00 pm, Townsquare Media’s news/talk WKXW-FM, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5” is presenting a town hall titled, “Don’t be a Bad Sport,” that looks at problems facing youth sports, including parents behaving badly on the sidelines and kids feeling pressured to play through injuries.im Station senior political director Eric Scott will moderate the town hall and he says, “Participating in youth sports can benefit our kids in so many ways. The State of Journalism in 2024: Why Talk Media Needs Investigative Reporting Now More Than Ever

imThe headlines haven’t been kind to journalism lately. That recent New York Times piece declaring its demise? It wasn’t exactly a morale booster. The Messenger, created to revitalize journalism in the digital age, shut down after just one year. Sports Illustrated was on the cutting block until Minute Media came onto the field with a Hail Mary to save the 70-year-old publication. The Wall Street Journal laid off a slew of talented reporters despite record profits. Yet, some of these decisions have nothing to do with the state of journalism but are based on balance sheets, declining advertising buys, and changing tastes in media consumption.

David S. Levine of the Times of Israel has written, “Journalism is dead. You are on your own.” But here’s the thing: I’m not buying it.

As a journalism professor at the University of Florida with more than 35 years in the industry, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs. Remember the rough economic patches of 2001 and 2008? The internet’s constant disruption? We’ve weathered those storms, and we’ll weather this one, too.

In fact, universities like mine are leading the charge in a new era of journalism. The investigative, political journalism and public policy reporting classes that I teach feed directly into something near and dear to me: credibly holding powerful institutions accountable. And we’re building partnerships to help sustain the industry.

Our Fresh Take Florida news service distributes significant reporting by our undergraduate journalism students to major news outlets across Florida. Newsrooms receive high-quality content for their readers, viewers, and listeners. Students earn real-world experience covering challenging subjects and gain exposure with editors and news directors who hire them when they graduate. Every semester, sadly, my classes of young reporters dwarf the size of many professional newsrooms in some of Florida’s biggest cities.

Talk media is especially vulnerable as our journalism industry works its way through these latest challenges. It relies on journalists to unearth those hard-hitting stories, identify credible sources, and separate fact from fiction.

Here’s the truth: Talk media can’t function without a healthy investigative journalism ecosystem. They need that next generation of journalists I’m training — reporters who are not just trustworthy and credible, but efficient and effective in getting the story out quickly. After all, in today’s fast-paced world, talk radio often relies on journalists for its content.

This is precisely why investigative journalism programs around the country and the Collier Prize for State Government Accountability are so crucial. The $25,000 Collier Prize, established at the University of Florida with a generous gift from Nathan Collier, a descendent of the family that founded the pioneering investigative journalism magazine Collier’s in the late 1880s, is one of the largest journalism awards in the country. It recognizes and celebrates the very kind of investigative reporting that underpins strong talk media.

We’re fostering a new breed of investigative journalists who can seamlessly serve the needs of both traditional and talk media. They understand the importance of speed and accuracy, the ability to distill complex issues into digestible segments, and the value of unearthing stories that spark conversation and hold power to account.

The future of journalism isn’t about flashy headlines or clickbait. It’s about dedicated professionals committed to truth, transparency, and giving a voice to the voiceless. It’s about investigative reporting that illuminates injustice and empowers citizens. And it’s about demonstrating to readers, viewers, and listeners that objective, hard-hitting journalism is worth paying for, after a generation where we gave it away free online.

Talk media is dependent to a degree on the success of the rest of the ecosystem, which is an important point. We highlight and identify credible sources who then become guests on programs that can go into a lot more depth than they can with a quote in a 1,000-word story. Talk radio very much has a stake in the success of journalism. They need this next generation of journalists to be better than ever — credible, trustworthy, and ethical but also efficient and effective — working expediently to get the story told because in a lot of cases talk radio is getting its content from journalists.

We are never not going to need journalists. That’s the silver lining — democracy needs journalists. It needs trustworthy, independent, independently minded journalists who seek the truth and report it. That sentiment is alive and well, and talk media needs this kind of journalism now more than ever.

Award-winning investigative journalist Ted Bridis led the Associated Press’ Pulitzer Prize-winning team before joining the University of Florida. He’s known for his expertise in source protection, FOIA law, and uncovering high-profile stories like the Clinton email server and Paul Manafort’s foreign lobbying. Multimedia sports platform OutKick announces that it finished February 2024 with 24 million total multiplatform views – up 4% versus February 2023 – and delivered 22 million total multiplatform minutes and 20.2 million total digital multiplatform unique visitors, according to data from Comscore. Outkick SVP and managing editor Gary Schreier says, “OutKick continues its great start to 2024 with growth across the platform and remains the destination for all the news where sports and culture intersect.”

The Library of American Broadcasting Foundation will present its third annual Insight Award to Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, author, and philanthropist Soledad O’Brien during the NAB Show Welcome on April 15. The Insight Award recognizes an individual or organization for an outstanding artistic or journalistic work or body of work that enhances the public’s understanding of the role, operation, history or impact of media in our society. Previous recipients include LeVar Burton and “60 Minutes.”

FOX News Digital Beats CNN.com in Multiplatform Unique Visitors

FOX News Digital finished February leading CNN.com with total digital multiplatform unique visitors for the first time ever, according to Comscore. FOX News Digital had 115.4 million (up 18% over last year)im unique visitors and CNN.com had 110.9 million (down 6% from last year). FOX News Digital has led CNN.com and NYTimes.com in multiplatform total views and multiplatform total minutes in recent years but CNN.com relinquishes the lead in multiplatform unique visitors (similar to radio’s cume) for the first time since Comscore has been reporting digital ratings.

The NAB launches the 2024 Election Toolkit – an online resource that provides local television and radio broadcasters with tips and resources to combat misinformation, drive get-out-the-vote efforts and cover local, state and federal elections. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt states, “Research suggests only about a third of Americans believe the upcoming 2024 election will be both honest and open, and nearly two-thirds believe that disinformation will influence the outcome. Broadcasters’ trusted local journalism combats the overwhelming tide of misinformation and disinformation online, making our role in providing accurate information this election season more important than ever.” Check it out here.

Former President Donald Trump sat down for a wide-ranging interview with WABC, New York’s Sid Rosenberg, on the “Sid and Friends in the Morning” program. Trump talked about his stance on abortion, the war in Gaza and his bid to win the White House this November.

Cumulus Media and MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers agree to renew their partnership to air Dodgers games on KYVB, Oxnard-Ventura.

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One is the official network audio broadcast partner of the NCAA, and will once again be home to every game in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Westwood One will present each game through the National Championship on April 8.

New York City radio personality Jim Kerr – host of the “Jim Kerr Rock and Roll Morning Show” on iHeartMedia’s Q104.3 – is celebrating 50 years on the air in the Big Apple. Kerr began hosting morning radio in New York City on March 18, 1974. The station is planning a week of special events to commemorate Kerr’s incredible achievement.

Triton Digital announces its partnership with ID5 to introduce rich audience data to Triton’s Audio Marketplace. Triton says this partnership will improve advertising targeting and addressability in the audio space while complying with privacy regulations globally. Triton chief product officer Benjamin Masse says, “ID5’s ID technology is transforming how the advertising world operates through the creation of listener profiles and its privacy-first approach. Providing access to these listener profiles, supported by rich data, will enhance the value of the inventory available in the Triton Digital Audio Marketplace. PodcastOne announces the extension of its partnership with A+E Networks for the exclusive sales and distribution rights to true crime podcasts “Cold Case Files” and “I Survived.” As part of the agreement, the two media companies will expand their relationship and introduce two new podcasts based on A&E’s long-running television programs, “American Justice” and “City Confidential.”

Independent Radio Reporter Joe Lindsley in Ukraine is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast

Joe Lindsley, editor of UkrainianFreedomNews.com, is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “The Michael Harrison Interview.” For the past two years-plus, he has been broadcasting from the city of Kyiv and other locations in Ukraine where he is covering the war for WGN, Chicago and an array of social media platforms. The NFL’s New York Jets are moving their radio play-by-play from Good Karma Brand’s ESPN New York (WEPM-AM/FM) to iHeartMedia’s rock WAXQ-FM “Q104.3” beginning with the 2024 season. Good Karma is ending its lease of WEPN-FM this year and will continue to air the sports talk format on WEPN-AM and digital platforms.

Lemonada Media is bringing the David Duchovny-hosted podcast “Fail Better” to its network. Duchovny says, “I’ve been a connoisseur of failure for a long time, obsessed with the mistakes we make or the fear of making. I like thinking about how those mistakes, coupled with the futility of trying to avoid them, shapes our lives. If failure is something we all do so often, why are we so afraid of it? Working with Lemonada to explore this part of human nature is a gift in itself, and a meta-exercise for me in doing something new – hosting a podcast – which frankly fills me with my own fear of failure.”

SiriusXM is doing its annual MLB Network Radio Spring Training Tour, in which it visits all 30 MLB team camps in 17 days to give listeners a comprehensive preview of every club as they prepare for the 2024 MLB season. Shows will be hosted by former general managers Jim Bowden, Jim Duquette and Steve Phillips, former major leaguers Kevin Frandsen, Eduardo Perez, Xavier Scruggs, and Ryan Spilborghs, as well as Mike Ferrin and Dani Wexelman. 

Audacy partners with three-time NBA champion Danny Green for his weekly podcast, “Inside the Green Room with Danny Green.” In addition, Green will serve as an Audacy insider, frequently appearing as an NBA analyst on Audacy sports stations across the country.

Rob Parker to Build Detroit Sports Talker with Black Talent

This story was first reported by the Detroit News last week. Awful Announcing summarizes the piece as sports media personality Rob Parker and retired NBA player and current agent B.J. Armstrong areim building “Sports Rap Radio” to air on Audacy’s WXYT-AM, Detroit with a target launch of mid-May. In what will likely be a first in sports talk radio, the lineup of air talent will be all-Black. WXYT-AM currently airs Audacy’s BetQL Network programming. Parker is quoted by the Detroit News saying, “It will be young people getting opportunities and former athletes, from Detroit or with ties to Detroit.” The lineup will be local from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and will segue into FOX Sports Radio’s “The Odd Couple” featuring Parker and Chris Broussard at 7:00 pm. The business radio show is currently heard on 13 stations across New England, including WRKO, Boston. The Nebraska Broadcasters Association will induct Kent Boughton, Jane Monnich and Dave Webber into the NBA Hall of Fame on August 6 in Lincoln during the 89th Annual NBA Convention. Monnich served with KLIN, Lincoln for 48 years. NBA says, “At a time when women were rarely heard on the air, Jane was soon [after joining the station] named KLIN’s afternoon news anchor. She moved to morning news in 1973 and in 1976 became KLIN’s morning show co-host with Ron Dean, forming Lincoln’s first male-female radio show. Jane’s passion was always news and over the more than four decades of reporting and anchoring that followed, Jane became known as THE voice of KLIN news. Jane retired from KLIN in 2020.”

SiriusXM NFL Radio will provide listeners nationwide with coverage of the annual NFL Scouting Combine next week with live programming originating from Indianapolis. SiriusXM NFL Radio hosts in Indianapolis will include former NFL front office executive Pat Kirwan, former NFL coach Charlie Weis, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Allen Robinson II, former NFL players Charles Davis, Jim Miller, Kirk Morrison and Solomon Wilcots, as well as veteran broadcaster Bruce Murray.

In a post on LinkedIn, media pro Bill Smee announces he’s stepped down from his vice president of news post at Audacy to pursue consulting and project management work. FNC says, “Taking place less than a mile and a half from Russian positions, Baier will speak with the president about the two-year anniversary of the war, the debate in Congress on additional funding to Ukraine and the latest developments in the ongoing conflict. GBH says the grant, pledged over a five-year period, will allow for the show’s sustainability and expansion to multiple platforms, including streaming on YouTube, a daily podcast, a weekly newsletter, events that include live broadcasts at the GBH Studio at the Boston Public Library, and featured segments on GBH News’ Greater Boston, a daily news program airing on GBH 2, and streaming live on YouTube. Both stations will air the full slate of FOX Sports Radio programs. FOX News Digital Leads News Set in Multiplatform Views and Minutes

FOX News Digital reports that, according to data from Comscore, it finished January continuing its streak as the top news brand with both multiplatform views and minutes. FOX News Digital closed outim the month reaching 3.27 billion total multiplatform minutes, compared to CNN.com’s 1.85 billion, and NYTimes.com’s 1.59 billion. FOX News Media attracted 1.66 billion total multiplatform views, compared to NYTimes.com’s 1.49 billion, and CNN.com’s 1.17 billion. When it comes to total digital unique visitors – similar to radio’s cume – CNN.com still holds the lead with 112.7 million. But FOX News Digital (109.7 million) has gradually been gaining ground on CNN.
