Pending Business: Thank You, Mr. President

imHow about a collective “thank you” to the 45th president of the United States for keeping your talk radio programming relevant, timely, unpredictable and most of all engaging?

The interpretation, speculation and compilation of facts, opinions and reporting will be non-stop until this chapter of the news cycle meets the next chapter. This is a never-ending saga that keeps the dial locked into your talk radio frequency. This is the content that keeps the electronic water cooler crowded with listeners who can’t get enough.

Whatever comes next in this chapter of history unfolding in front of our collective ears and eyes is the oxygen that keeps the talk radio world alive and well every day. By the way, the 45th president of the United States just may have pulled your typically soft talk radio summer sales out of the basement and pushed you into an express elevator to the penthouse.

Are you still feeling the drumbeat of the naysayers predicting how talk radio will age out? Or better yet, run its course? My prediction is talk radio is about enter a phase previously unmatched in American broadcast history. Seriously. When was the last time a former president of the United States owned the headlines and collective headspace of talk radio hosts and listeners worldwide for so many years? Never.

Let’s get ready to refresh our summer vacation schedules, seasonal sales packages, rates, and most of all strategies. Start here:

— Sell the concept. Leave the opinions and banter about indictments, politics and the law to your on-air talent. Focus instead on the unique value of the engaged audience.

— Experts are important. Chances are your talk radio hosts will be smart enough to break down the issues and lean on experts to help the audience understand the ramifications. Credibility and consistency can make your coverage stand apart. Show your advertiser what makes your coverage different and better.

— Talk radio goes where TV and video can’t – the car, the beach, even the backyard. Sell the need to know on the go.

— Unfolding the unpredictable. Your listeners want the “inside scoop” on what the next chapter of this saga looks like. Your on-air talent look for every opportunity to give their listeners a peek behind the opinion curtain. The seller’s job is to bring the value of that connection to life on every sales call.

Talk radio is alive and well every day. It’s up to you to show your advertisers the value of instant access to a trusted voice.

The American Association of Retired Persons still advocates for them, but it no longer restricts membership to seniors. Otherwise, its base would, literally, die-off (radio take note). So…

“The younger you are, the more you need AARP.”

Emery Songer Named Afternoon Host at KFAB, Omaha

iHeartMedia announces that Emery Songer is the new afternoon drive talk host at KFAB, Omaha “NewsRadio 1110,” effective June 26. Songer joins KFAB, Omaha after more than five years as a host and producer with Newsradio 1040 WHO in Des Moines. iHeartMedia says,im “During that time, he has guest-hosted statewide news/talk programs as well as a regular weekend show, produced their daily morning show, worked with clients in a creative variety of ways, and spent countless evenings and weekends announcing local soccer and baseball games.” KFAB program director Scott Voorhees adds, “Emery will continue KFAB’s nearly 100-year-old tradition of on-air personalities who are passionate about connecting with the community we serve. Prolific author and veteran talk media purveyor of current events with a focus on African American perspectives, Tavis Smiley, was honored by the TALKERS editorial board at the TALKERS 2023 conference as the 2023 recipient of the highly prestigious Gene Burns Memorial Award for Freedom of Speech. (The presentation was sponsored by The Todd Starnes Show) The award is presented each year to a talk media practitioner whose work sets an example for the exercise and preservation of the First Amendment. Passion Versus AI

imLast week I had the privilege of moderating a panel at the TALKERS conference. Confession: I listen to speech patterns and tones more than words.

The prestigious panel featured Dan Mandis, program director and host, WTN-FM, Nashville; Ross Kaminsky, host KOA, Denver; Phil Boyce, SVP, spoken word format, Salem Media Group/ops VP, New York region/WMCA/AM 970; Josh Leng, CEO, Talk Media Network; and Matt Meany, program director, WABC, New York/Red Apple Media.

Yes, their collective knowledge and experience is unbeatable. They answered questions of great interest: How does iHeart measure social media accomplishments? Should one be fired for social media or podcast content or just for their air work? Establishing a syndication base, how does that happen? Where are the women – kudos to Salem’s Phil Boyce for celebrating their women hosts. What do programmers really look for in hosts? All valuable answers.  See the video of this session here.

Their words aren’t the “win.” The win is the fact that each of these pros has passion, passion and more passion. Their knowledge results in caring, heartfelt, supportive shares. They care about the future; they care about their craft. Programmers have to be optimistic about radio’s positive impact in order for them to do their jobs. Their descriptive tones make radio appealing.

The panel represents radio’s caretakers, gardeners, guides. The executives on the stage reveal qualities and qualifications that become overwhelmingly apparent in their demeanor and speech patterns. That’s what I hear.

Radio does not have to compete or fret over AI.  AI coders have to fret over their inevitable failure to capture or even coldly mimic the depth of emotion and confidence expressed by Matt, Josh, Phil, Ross and Dan. Good luck with that algorithm …losers.

Radio Host Mark Walters Suing OpenAI for Defamation

Talk host Mark Walters, who produces and hosts Second Amendment-themed radio programs via his CCW Broadcast Media company, is suing OpenAI in a Georgia Superior Court claiming that OpenAI’s ChatGPT created a false case alleging that Walters embezzled funds from theim Second Amendment Foundation. The complaint states that journalist Fred Riehl was researching the case of The Second Amendment Foundation v. Robert Ferguson and asked ChatGPT to provide a summary of that complaint and received one that stated the suit’s plaintiff is Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb who accuses Walters as treasurer and chief financial officer of embezzling funds. Walters says, and Gottlieb confirms, that he didn’t serve in either position and didn’t steal anything. In the AI world, false text from services like ChatGPT are called “hallucinations.” As with any defamation case, Walters will have to prove he’s suffered damages, but this case will be interesting to watch as it appears to be the first such legal case involving the work of AI. JVC Broadcasting Executive and Host David Levenstein Dies

David Levenstein, who served as general manager of  JVC Broadcasting’s WRCN-FM, Riverhead, New York “103.9 LI News Radio” and as host of “Back To Business,” diedim unexpectedly on June 5 after a brief illness at the age of 59. JVC Broadcasting executive vice president Bruce Shepard states, “It is with an extremely heavy heart that I bring you the news that early this morning, Lev, a dear member of our JVC Family, our co-worker, our friend, lost his battle and was taken from us way too soon. We will miss Dave more than words can possibly say.”

2023 Radio Mercury Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2023 Radio Mercury Awards were announced last night (6/8) during the 32nd annual awards presentation held at SONY Hall in New York. RAB president and CEO Ericaim Farber, who also serves as chair of Radio Creative Fund, says, “Tonight was another great night for radio, celebrating the creativity that agencies and radio stations are producing on behalf of their clients. The Radio Mercury Awards continues to advance the medium forward by showcasing and awarding work that is innovative and effective.” This year’s Radio Marketer of the Year Award was presented to Procter & GambleSee (and hear!) all the winners here.

Bob Pittman Addresses Key Issues in TALKERS 2023 Video

iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman and TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison engaged in an exclusive nine-minute video conversation that debuted during the opening segment (sponsored by Doctor Asa) of TALKERS 2023, the 26th annual edition of the talk media industry’s longest-running and most important conference held June 2 at Hofstra University. In it, Pittman candidly and directly addresses key existential issues pertaining to the talk radio industry as it faces daunting forks in the road. Harrison, who has known Pittman since he was a 20-year-old music director at WMAQ, Chicago in the mid-1970s, asks the chief of radio’s largest firm such questions as, “Do you still have the same passion for radio as I remember you having when we were kids in the business?” “What are iHeart’s intentions for news/talk and sports talk radioim within the realm of the company going forward?” “How can radio remain true to its roots and mission as an audio medium and theater-of-the-mind without missing the opportunities provided in a multiplatform environment?” plus more. Pittman says that this is a “golden moment” for both radio and the larger field of audio in which it is and will remain a major player. He pointed out that “25% of iHeart’s stations do not play music” and that more and more shows on the company’s music stations are “actually talk shows that play little or no music at all.” He reaffirmed the company’s awareness that personality plays an important role in the presentation of music and it is its intention to pivot back in that direction. He candidly addressed the divide between the coastal elites who influence the direction of national media but are largely out of touch with the heartland and the rest of real America. WABC, New York Wins Eight NYSBA Awards

Red Apple Media’s “Talkradio 77WABC” is honored with eight Excellence in Broadcasting Awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association. Honors include “Sid & Friends in the Morning” for Best Morning Show; Rita Cosby, Dominic Carter, Noam Laden for Bestim Election Coverage; Curtis Sliwa:  Closing of Lenny’s Pizza for Best Personality, Social Media; and “The Other Side of Midnight” host Frank Morano’s interview with William Shatner for Best Podcast. Red Apple Media CEO John Catsimatidis says, “I am proud of our talent and all station personnel that have worked hard to make 77WABC the station it once was. Our talent and staff are leaders in their field; our on-air personalities include the biggest names in New York. We’re just getting started. There is always more to come from the iconic 77WABC.”

Tucker Carlson Debuts on Twitter; FOX News Cries Foul

According to a report by Axios, FOX News has notified Tucker Carlson’s attorneys that they believe his Tuesday Twitter broadcast is in violation of his contract. The Tuesday program was Carlson’s first broadcast since he exited FOX News Channel in April. FOX argues that the showim was a violation of the non-compete portion of his contract. Axios reports that Carlson’s lawyers say, “Any legal action by FOX would violate [Carlson’s] First Amendment rights.” The Axios piece goes on to say that Carlson is accusing FOX News of breach of contract for breaking their promise to not settle the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit in a manner in which it would indicate wrongdoing on the part of Carlson. It’s been reported that firing Carlson was a part of FOX’s settlement agreement with Dominion. Read the Axios report here.

Salem Media Group announces that the “Main Street Matters” podcast, produced by Job Creators Network, joins the Salem Podcast Network. The small business-focused program features inspirational real-life stories of the struggles and successes of small business owners. It is co-hosted by Alfredo Ortiz and Elaine Parker.

Salem Media Group and The Epoch Times Enter Strategic Partnership

A new licensing and distribution agreement has been struck between Salem Media Group’s OTT streaming platform SalemNOW and The Epoch Times’ EpochTV. As a result, EpochTV’s feature-length documentary, LEAVING CALIFORNIA: The Untold Story, is currently available onim SalemNOW for rental or purchase. SalemNOW general manager Robert Ellis comments, “It’s a privilege to partner with The Epoch Times to offer their incredible film, LEAVING CALIFORNIA, on SalemNOW.” The film’s writer and producer Siyamak Khorrami imcomments, “SalemNOW’s rapid growth and success make them an ideal partner for us as we look to increase awareness about the critical issues we address in our film. KFI, Los Angeles Debuts Limited Podcast Series on Rising Antisemitism

iHeartMedia’s Los Angeles news/talk outlet KFI-AM announces the launch of “HATE: Modern Antisemitism,” a limited podcast series that investigates the spike in hate crimes and how people inside and outside the Jewish community are helping to raise awareness with the goal of stopping Antisemitism and all incidents of hate. The series – produced by the award-winning team of Steve Gregory and Jacob Gonzalez – features Ted Deutch, the CEO of the Americanim Jewish Committee. The AJC is a global advocacy organization that monitors Antisemitism around the world and offers education and support to the Jewish community as well as engaging with leaders at the highest levels of government. KFI program director Robin Bertolucci says, “I, along with others, recently watched in horror as anti-Semitic protesters were seen making Nazi salutes to passersby on the 405 freeway. As broadcasters, it is our duty to educate and inform our listeners and this podcast brings attention to the unseemly underbelly of Antisemitism which is sadly alive and well online and in our communities.” Other guests include Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the associate dean and director of Global Social Action Agenda for the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles; Dr. Matthew Schumacher, a clinical and operational psychologist who is on assignment with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Bureau; Dr. Michael Berenbaum, curator of the installation of the only authorized traveling exhibition of Auschwitz; Rabbi Michael Barclay, founding rabbi of Temple Ner Simcha in Westlake Village, California.

Noted humorist and political commentator Bill Maher (above, left) is a longtime acquaintance and guest of WPHT, Philadelphia midday legend Dom Giordano (right). The two independent thinkers pictured here represent a large swath of the ever-evolving political spectrum. Giordano tells TALKERS, “Bill Maher has been a steady guest of mine over the last several years, particularly on issues like cancel culture. In the course of my recent interview with him on his appearance at The Met in Philadelphia (6/3), I told him that Roe, my wife, and I would be attending his show. He invited us backstage and we talked talk radio, the writers’ strike and his audience including a lot more conservatives.”

KIDO, Boise Adds CT & BS, Clears Hannity Live

Townsquare Media’s KIDO, Boise “Talk Radio 107.5 FM & 580 AM” announces the addition of Premiere Networks’ “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” to its program lineup in the 10:00 am to 1:00 pm daypart. At the same time, the station moves Premiere’s “The Sean Hannityim Show” to a live clearance from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. KIDO brand manager Kevin Miller states, “In the world that we live in today, with the possibilities of world war and an upcoming presidential election, the addition of Clay and Buck along with Sean Hannity live will allow Idahoans to hear the news and talk about it as it happens. It’s great having all three talented hosts with Idaho connections and values in the Treasure Valley.”

Three Arrested After WILK-AM/FM Break-In

PAHomePage reports three people have been arrested and charged with breaking into Audacy’s news/talk WILK-AM/FM, Wilkes-Barre on May 27. The report indicates Christian MacDowell,im 47, James Norman Swank, 35, and Elizabeth Ann Caruso, 35, have been charged with burglary. The report goes on to note that Caruso and Swank admitted being at the station but denied stealing anything. While MacDowell admitted breaking into the station and stealing two demolition bags, sanitary wipes, and a fire extinguisher. They’ve each been released on $25,000 unsecured bail. Cumulus-Signal Hill Report: YouTube #1 Podcast Platform

Cumulus Media, in partnership with Signal Hill Insights, release their “Podcast Download – Spring 2023 Report,” that studies the podcast audience. Cumulus says this 10th edition of the study that examines weekly podcast consumers is part of its commitment to share insights and research findings with the podcast community. The study concludes that podcast consumersim have embraced YouTube as the number one podcast platform, especially with podcast discovery. Cumulus Media EVP, marketing and president, Westwood One Suzanne Grimes states, “Throughout our long-running ‘Podcast Download Report’ series, we have seen the steady growth of YouTube as a podcast destination and now as a gateway to podcast discovery. While the dominance of YouTube as a platform is exciting and important as we continue to launch our Cumulus Podcast Network shows on YouTube, at the end of the day, content trumps the platform, and our strategy is to focus on podcasts that retain the audience regardless of platform.”

Sports Radio 101.1 in Peoria Adds FOX Sports Radio

Advanced Media Partners announces that it adds FOX Sports Radio’s lineup to its sports talk WZPN-FM, “Peoria’s Sports Radio 101.1.” The station adds the network’s “Two Pros and a Cup of Joe with LaVar Arrington, Brady Quinn & Jonas Knox,” “The Dan Patrick Show,” “The Herdim with Colin Cowherd,” “The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard & Rob Parker,” “The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon” and “The Ben Maller Show.” It will also feature FOX Sports Radio around the clock on weekends. Advanced Media Partners operations manager Scott Hecathorn says, “Moving to FOX Sports is both creating an opportunity to give our listeners even more local sports content with our expanded local lineup, and also giving us the top-notch personalities from FOX Sports throughout the rest of the day. This is the biggest victory for Peoria since the Rivermen brought home the President’s Cup!”

WJR, Detroit Unveils New All Local Lineup

Cumulus Media’s Detroit news/talk 760 WJR announces a series of lineup changes that will take effect on June 20 in which all of the daytime hosts will be live and local. One of the biggest changes is longtime station morning host Paul W. Smith moving to the newly created 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm daypart as host of “Focus.” Smith replaces the Westwood One-syndicated “Dan Bongino Show.” WJR says that Smith’s hosting the “Focus” show “will expand theim community’s access to Michigan’s most influential political, civic, and business newsmakers.”  Moving to mornings is current early afternoon host Guy Gordon, who becomes host of  “JR Morning” from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. “All Talk” with Tom Jordan and Kevin Dietz airs from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Following “Focus” will be the imnewly created “JR Afternoon” show with host Chris Renwick from 2:00pm-4:00pm, followed by “The Mitch Albom Show” from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Additionally, WJR is bringing back “SportsWrap” with host Sean Baligian airing from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Cumulus Detroit VP and market manager Steve Finateri says, “Launching the ‘Focus’ show will give Paul W. Please accept my apologies for NOT believing radio, AM radio, news/talk radio is dead. Just ask most of the panelists at last Friday’s TALKERS 2023 convention.

For sure, the news/talk AM radio sector is navigating the choppy waters of change, like it or not. The microsecond breaking newsflash so currently common in our digital world has forever changed the basic pillars of the AM radio news/talk world: programming, audience engagement, sales, and tech. Change and adapt we must. To paraphrase Charles Darwin, “Survival belongs to those who adapt to change, forget about being fit.”

Surprising as it may seem, the five local owner-operators who joined me for our “Generating Sales in the Digital World” panel all agreed on one thing: commitment to their local community. And where there’s a local sound, there is a local sale. Just look at how local owner-operators are growing their AM news/talk operations to win more sales every day. Todd Starnes’ KWAM, Memphis is expanding its local news department, while trendy players like Vice Media and Buzzfeed shut down news efforts. From the Hudson Valley and Albany in New York state to Santa Cruz, California, local owner operators are on calls personally driving local sales. The tech friendly media kit at KTBB, Tyler, Texas tells the story of “The Spoken-Word Advantage.”

These entrepreneurs are fearless when it comes to competing with large group-owned properties that may be better positioned to win national dollars delivering scale local owner-operators can’t match. But wait, they are all proving there is more than one way to win business. While some large-scale group operators struggle with the perils of stock market delisting, 80% of my local owner-operator panelists feel confident 2023 will be bigger and better than 2022. How about you? Is there an air of pride and confidence on your sales team that 2023 will close ahead of last year?

When it comes to the digital race, the truth is many local owner-operators are still learning the best way to compete. Local ad budgets are quickly shifting to incorporate more and more digital, mobile, and streaming initiatives. To a large extent, sellers follow the path of least resistance to the ad money as local managers try to project where the ad money is going. The message last week at the TALKERS 2023 convention was the local news/talk radio business is alive and well and still growing, with an understanding to adapt to change is to survive.

— Avoid Predictability – AI isn’t generating new insights; it’s a prediction engine that merely guesses the most likely next word…its suggestions tend to homogenize, and they’re only as good as the wisdom of the crowds, which is often the exact opposite of wisdom.

— Hone the skills that machines strive to emulate – AI responses display empathy (“I am sorry my answer upset you”), self-awareness (“I’m just an AI model and my answers are based on training data”). But those responses are based on text prediction, and AI is not capable of experiencing or displaying the human version of these soft skills…so actually knowing and caring about what others think and feel, truly understanding yourself, and being capable of creating something machines cannot is an essential strategy to set yourself apart.

— Double down on “the real world” – Original research — actually talking to people and identifying new insights — becomes critical, because AI can only connect past dots and information it’s already been presented with. When you tap into information that isn’t (yet) online through your lived experience or novel interviews and conversations, you’re adding something genuinely new to the cultural conversation that wouldn’t be possible through AI.

— Develop your personal brand – Just as art world buyers will pay exponentially more for a “real Rembrandt” rather than an equally beautiful painting by one of his lesser-known contemporaries, corporate leaders will likely continue to pay a premium to work with people viewed as the “top of their field” — partly as a statement of quality, and partly as a brand statement about whom they associate with and what they value.

— Cultivate expertise – AI technologies are prodigious researchers that can summon a cavalcade of facts almost instantly. Unfortunately, some of those facts aren’t true. Even if AI performs “first draft” functions, it still has to be double-checked by a trusted and reliable source.

Civic Media Launches News/Talk Format on Three More Wisconsin Stations

Civic Media announces the addition of three Wisconsin radio stations to its network of news/talk/sports outlets. The company calls itself “a network of 18 radio stations across Wisconsin in 12 distinct news/talk media markets.” The new stations – WLCX-AM, Eau Claireim “The Eagle”; WCFW-HD2, Chippewa Falls/W228EP, Eau Claire “93.5 The Tap”; and WRJN-AM/W260CV, Racine – are carrying the Civic Media talk show lineup that includes “As Goes Wisconsin” with Kristin Brey; “The Todd Allbaugh Show”; “Matt Flynn-Direct”; “The Devil’s Advocates” with Crute and Dom; and more. The early morning shows across the network are local, with “UpNorthNews Radio” with Pat Kreitlow airing on WLCX and WCFW, and “The Lou Rugani Show” airing on WRJN.

Bonneville’s Brown Bowing Out

Bonneville’s Brown Bowing Out. Effective August 1, Tanya Vea will become Bonneville International’s president and chief operating officer, succeeding Darrell Brown, who announces his retirement. Brown states, “I’ve loved my time at Bonneville and it’s not easy to leave, but it’s the right time for me and my family. I’m grateful for the opportunity that I’ve had to associate with so many wonderful employees as we’ve workedim together to further Bonneville’s mission to be a positive influence on the communities we serve. We’ve grown as a company in our reach and impact. I know Tanya will take Bonneville to the next level – I’m thrilled for the future of the company under her leadership.” Vea comments that Brown has been, “an incredible mentor” and she is “so grateful for all that he’s done” for Bonneville. “He has led by example as a steward of the company and its resources. I will miss working with him, and I feel incredibly imfortunate to take on this role knowing that he has put the company in a position of strength. Bonneville is a special company. I’m committed to building on the foundation of those who have come before me and am focused on fulfilling our mission to be trusted voices in our communities. Our greatest strength is our team of talented people. I’m honored to be able to work with them to grow Bonneville for the future.” Brown’s tenure as Bonneville’s president began in December 2013. Before that, he possessed a similar title for McGraw-Hill Broadcasting Company. During Brown’s 28 years at McGraw-Hill, he worked in various sales and management capacities for ABC and Azteca America television stations. He currently is board chair for the NAB Leadership Foundation. Recently promoted to executive vice president of content and media operations, Vea oversees content strategy for all Bonneville markets. She commenced with Bonneville in 2010 as vice president of program development before being boosted to senior vice president/general manager overseeing the company’s Salt Lake City cluster. Currently on  NBC’s affiliate board and executive committee, Vea formerly worked in advertising and public relations.

Lee Leaving KFI For Redding OM Role

KFI “Wake Up Call With Jennifer Jones Lee” host/Bill Handel morning drive news anchor Jennifer Jones Lee will exit the iHeartMedia Los Angeles news/talk outlet later this month (6/26) to become operations manager of Results Radio’s five-station Redding, California cluster. Results Radio senior vice president Dave Shakesim states, “We’re fortunate to bring in Jennifer, who is strongly driven, proactive, and possesses tremendous leadership skills. She will lead our talented local team in evolving forward and keep our brands top-of-mind and necessary in the lives of our audiences.” Lee remarks, “I can’t thank Results Radio enough for this opportunity. After 30 years learning and working with amazing radio journalists and top newsrooms, the opportunity to shift into music with a challenging new position is more than I could’ve imagined. [I] can’t wait to begin this new chapter in my career.” Prior to joining KFI in 2016, Lee was San Francisco news/talk KGO’s morning drive news anchor and she worked in Sacramento for news/talk KFBK. This marks a return home for Lee, who began her career as a music personality on Redding’s KEWB. Among the five Results Radio-owned Redding stations she will oversee is sports talk KKXS “XS Sports 96.1.”

Meta May Delete News From Its California Apps

In a warning issued yesterday (Wednesday, 5/31), Meta claims it will pull news links from Facebook and Instagram in California if lawmakers in The Golden State move forward with a bill that would tax the company for news content. The proposed California Journalism Preservation Act would require online platforms to pay a “journalism usage fee” to news providers whose work appears on their services. Under the measure, an estimated 70% of the money collected from that fee would support newsrooms throughout California. Meta argued the bill will aid out-of-state companies and says if the Journalism Preservation Act is enacted, it will remove news from Facebook and Instagram altogether. While the bill has been praised from some of California’s largest journalism unions such as Media Guild of the West and Pacific Media Workers Guild, non-profit media advocacy organization Free Press Action has criticized it, per CNN, as doing “nothing to support trustworthy local reporting and would instead pad the profits of massive conglomerates.”

FOX News Channel’s New Weekend Program Lineup

FOX News Channel debuts a new weekend primetime lineup tomorrow (6/3). “The Big Saturday/Sunday Show” becomes “The Big Weekend Show,” airing at 7:00 pm ET on Saturdays and Sundays while “FOX News Saturday Night” will premiere at 10:00 pm ET. Additionally, “The Next Revolution” will end its Sunday 9:00 pmim ET run as Steve Hilton steps back from hosting a weekly show to focus on his new California non-partisan policy organization launching next week. Hilton will remain a contributor across all FOX News Media platforms while Trey Gowdy’s “Sunday Night in America” will move to 9:00 pm slot. SVP Megan Albano says, “We are excited to launch a new dynamic weekend lineup that will further solidify our position as the number one cable news network for more than two decades. We thank Steve Hilton for his show’s contributions and look forward to continuing to feature his valuable insights across our daytime and primetime programming.”

In three weeks (6/24), NPR White House correspondent/“NPR Politics Podcast” co-host Scott Detrow will become weekend host of the network’s “All Things Considered.” Vice president of news programming Eric Marrapodi comments, “With Scott at the helm, we’re going to be experimenting with the sound of the show and the way we produce it. We want to further integrate the ‘Consider This’ podcast with the weekend show. We also look forward to Scott bringing his original enterprise reporting on a range of topics. His experience on the White House beat had him chasing the president around the country and the world to bring our audiences great reporting with good humor. He’ll bring that same energy and commitment to bringing home stories for ‘All Things Considered’ audiences.”

“Choice Words With Samantha Bee” launched yesterday (Thursday, 6/2) via Lemonada Media. In her weekly podcast, the former host of TBS’ “Full Frontal” and correspondent for Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” will interview celebrities, politicians, and others about the choices they’ve made in their lives. Topics will reportedly range from what to eat for breakfast and which subway car to take, to who someone is voting for and what they do with their body. Bee’s initial guests were Judd Apatow and Rosie O’Donnell.

After debuting their “Aarthi and Sriram Show” in December 2020 on Clubhouse, technologists Aarthi Ramamurthy and Sriram Krishnan are bringing their weekly (Saturday) program to iHeartPodcasts. According to iHeartPodcasts president Will Pearson, “Aarthi and Sriram have created an impressive show featuring insightful conversations with top minds across industries. These two have built a highly engaged community. We are thrilled to welcome ‘The Aarthi and Sriram Show’ to iHeartPodcasts and help the show reach an even wider audience.”  

Free hourly, 60-second updates live from Wimbledon will be offered by Radio News Hub during next month’s tennis tournament (7/3 – 16). The John Cushing-hosted updates will be fed between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm (BT). Head of programming David Prever notes, “Wimbledon is one of the most highly anticipated events in the global sporting calendar and always serves in terms of drama, atmosphere, and sporting achievements.
