Edison Research: The Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. for Q4 2024

imEdison Research announces the Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. based on reach for Q4 2024 among weekly podcast listeners age 13+. The list ranks podcasts based on total audience reach from Edison Podcast Metrics. Interviews were conducted continuously throughout the quarter in English and Spanish. Rankings are based on listening over the full period. All respondents reported listening to podcasts in the last week.

Since Q3 2024, the top four podcasts – “The Joe Rogan Experience,” “Crime Junkie,” “The Daily,” and “Call Her Daddy”have maintained their rankings in that order.

1. The Joe Rogan Experience
2.
Crime Junkie
3.
The Daily
4. Call Her Daddy
5.
This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von (+3 spots)
6. Dateline NBC (+1)
7. SmartLess (-2)
8. Stuff You Should Know (-2)
9. Morbid (+3)
10. Pod Save America (+9)

Top of the charts: “Pod Save America,” hosted by former Obama staffers, makes its debut in the Top 10, no doubt riding the wave of the political news cycle.

After a mid-September launch, “Talk Tuah with Hailey Welch quickly skyrocketed in popularity, debuting at #11. The last episode dropped in mid-December, one day before Welch’s $HAWK crypto debacle and subsequent lawsuit.

In the Top 50 for the first time: The November election likely contributed to several podcasts making their debut in the Top 50 this quarter. “Shawn Ryan Show” appears for the first time at #37, continuing its rise as an interview podcast featuring military veterans, intelligence operatives, and political figures. “The Charlie Kirk Show” breaks in at #49, leveraging Kirk’s influence as the founder of Turning Point USA.

“Candace,” Candace Owens’ independent show, debuts at #45, marking a strong entry following her controversial departure from The Daily Wire in March 2024. Owens launched “Candace” in June 2024 and its rapid rise makes clear her loyal audience followed her to her new venture.

Continued rise of conservative talk: In addition to the conservative talk podcasts making their Top 50 debuts this quarter, several established conservative voices moved higher in the rankings. “The Ben Shapiro Show” climbs from #22 to #14 and “The Megyn Kelly Show” sees a boost from #50 to #27. Meanwhile, “The Matt Walsh Show,” which was last in the Top 50 in Q3 2023, reentered the Top 50 at #45.

The podcast show ranker is derived from data collected continuously during the fourth quarter of 2024, interviewing 5,163 weekly podcast consumers age 13 and older in the U.S. Participants indicate which podcasts they listened to in the past week along with a variety of demographic, psychographic, and purchase-behavior information. This ranker measures reach as a percentage of the weekly podcast listening audience.   For full details, please click here. Edison Podcast Metrics

Smoke and Mirrors: Fair Use Lessons from Pop Smoke and Bruno Mars

By Matthew B. Harrison
TALKERS, VP/Associate Publisher

imThe intersection of copyright and fair use remains a gray area for media creators, especially in music. Two cases – Pop Smoke’s use of an interview clip in “Tunnel Vision (Outro) and Bruno Mars’ use of a voicemail from Halle Berry in “Calling All My Lovelies – offer crucial lessons. While one led to legal action, the other was resolved without litigation, underscoring the importance of understanding copyright laws when using external audio.

The Pop Smoke Case: Unpermitted Use Leads to Legal Action

In 2020, journalist Victoria Inoyo sued Pop Smoke’s record labels, alleging they used a 16-second interview clip without permission. She sought $1.5 million in damages, credit as a writer, and a share of publishing revenue. The case was settled out of court, but Inoyo was not credited as a songwriter. This highlights the importance of obtaining permission before using recorded speech, even if it features an artist discussing themselves.

The Bruno Mars Case: A Voicemail Used with Permission

Bruno Mars featured a voicemail from actress Halle Berry in “Calling All My Lovelies from his 2016 album “24K Magic.” The voicemail added a playful and personal touch to the song, and because Berry gave explicit permission for its use, no legal issues arose. This highlights the importance of obtaining proper authorization when incorporating third-party audio.

Key Takeaways for Media Creators

1. Copyright Still Applies to Spoken Word – Just because audio clips discuss an artist does not mean they are free to use.

2. Fair Use is Not a Guarantee – Using spoken-word content in a transformative manner does not automatically qualify it as fair use.

3. Seek Permission When Possible – Negotiating proper licensing before using copyrighted speech can prevent legal disputes.

4. Personal vs. Third-Party Audio – Bruno Mars’ use of Halle Berry’s voicemail did not lead to litigation, demonstrating how securing consent can help avoid legal issues.

For media creators, these cases illustrate the need for careful legal consideration. Proper permissions and clear transformative intent can mean the difference between a seamless creative process and a costly legal battle.

RADIO: Old School, New School, Next School

By Michael Harrison
Publisher, TALKERS

MH IDTo say that I am excited about the forthcoming Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) conference coming up in New York City on Friday March 7 and Saturday March 8 is an understatement.  I am proud that TALKERS has taken on the role of “presenting sponsor” of the entire event and that this year’s iteration of the annual “TALKERS” conference will be taking a unique and groundbreaking turn toward the future of radio-oriented broadcasting within the context of the industry’s leading youth-oriented gathering.

On Saturday March 8, TALKERS will be presenting an exciting and hopefully productive set of consecutive sessions collectively titled “GENERATIONS 2025.”  The theme: “Old School, New School, Next School: Learning from Each Other.” It will be happening on Saturday March 8 between 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm and feature more than 19 luminous industry speakers who will be there to both inform and learn from the hundreds of leading college broadcasters from across America who will be in attendance.

IBSIf professional radio is truly concerned about an aging audience and a deteriorating “farm system” from which to recruit new talent, it’s time to connect with the largest concentration of young broadcasters and listeners found on the planet in America’s dynamic campus radio station and communications department scene.

Here are just three (of many) pointers I hope to share with the young radio broadcasters (and I know I will learn a lot – as I always do – just being in their presence):

• Radio will no longer be defined by the platform or “band” upon which it is delivered.  We all know that. But for it to survive as anything other than a public utility (i.e. a soulless audio delivery system), it must maintain the magic and esthetic that has carried “radio” across more than a century of glorious history. It must bring the essence of its specialnessto its necessary co-existence with extended video, graphic and digital cousin platforms.  Be proud to be radio.

• Professionals in the radio (especially talent) business and increasingly related “other” media would be wise to think entrepreneurially. At this point, most do not; they maintain an “employee” mentality – and that is an economic and soul-busting liability as we rapidly morph into the NEXT school. You no longer have to “break in” to the business by getting past a gatekeeper for the honor of creating product on a real platform.  You can make your own real platform as well as the business structure to support those efforts. Learn business.  Start a production company.

• Learn how to use Big Tech platforms such as YouTube (their algorisms are a blessing and a curse) but beware of the suppressive techniques employed by their owners to mysteriously control how the game is scored.  Stay on top of that.  The 21st century will require an updated approach to bolstering the increasingly quaint First Amendment.

Please read the stories directly below for up-to-date information about this important two-day event coming up in March.

KSCO Owner/Host Michael “MZ” Zwerling Unleashes Dramatic On-Air Rant During Anniversary Program

Listeners to heritage news/talk outlet KSCO, Santa Cruz, CA were treated to an unexpected candid outburst of energetic verbiage this past weekend (2/1) during the long-running show, “The Saturday Special,” hosted by station owner/ host Michael “MZ” Zwerling. This installment of the weekly 10:00 am – 12:00 noon live, img local show was set to be a celebration of the station’s 34th anniversary – marking the day that Zwerling took ownership of the 10k flame thrower at 1080 AM and launched its news/talk format back on February 1, 1991. Zwerling was taking calls from listeners offering congratulations and sharing memories of the station over the years.  One of KSCO’s regular callers, “Dave,” took a different course and went off on a political tirade that triggered an emotionally charged negative response from Zwerling resulting in one of the most dramatic live “meltdowns” captured on-air in recent memory. Zwerling’s co-host Amy Hoa had to calm Zwerling down telling him that his blood pressure was rising to a dangerous level. The listener, who was obviously a regular caller to the station was forever banned from appearing on the station again. KBLA, Los Angeles to Kick Off Black History Month Tomorrow (2/1) with Major Climate Justice and Black Health Campaign Aimed at CA Communities of Color

imSmileyAudioMedia, Inc. announced today (1/31) that its flagship Los Angeles-based radio station, KBLA Talk 1580, will launch year two of its Climate Justice work. This $2 million, 12-month campaign will link and combat the relationship between climate change and poor health outcomes for African Americans, other people of color, and the poor. The campaign was recently named a national semifinalist for the American Climate Leadership Awards 2025 by ecoAmerica. Climate inequities have taken a toll with multiple health triggers in the Black community, such as extreme heat and poor air quality, made worse by the recent wildfires.

Building on the success of last year’s campaign, KBLA will tailor brand-specific health messaging to the Black community, use strategic alliances to create a healthful behavior pipeline, create culturally and socially sensitive health education opportunities, and enhance knowledge and awareness among Black community stakeholders.

KBLA lineup

The initiative plans a robust schedule of climate/Black health-themed broadcasts and special programming during the next 12 months, free community events each quarter, a one-of-a-kind Black health online portal, two town halls broadcast nationally from Los Angeles, and a savvy social media and marketing campaign. Last year, KBLA Talk 1580 hosted a national conversation live on C-SPAN. It will do so again this year with the theme, “Narrowing the Gap: Addressing Health Disparities Among African Americans.” KBLA is being joined in this effort by an array of public and private partners.

“The harsher impacts of climate change weigh heavily on communities of color, as we can see with the impact of the wildfires on historic Black communities like Altadena where lives were lost, property was destroyed, and these toxic air pollutants are likely to cause even greater harm in the months and years to come,” stated Tavis Smiley, KBLA’s chief visionary officer, host of the nationally syndicated “Tavis Smiley Show,” and 2023 recipient of the coveted “Freedom of Speech” Award from TALKERS.  “There is real concern that these wildfires may leave even more inequity in their wake.”

As a Black-owned and operated major media company focused on these underserved communities, and as the most ‘trusted, credible and reliable’ media source in Southern California for African Americans and beyond, we are committed to doing more than talk in these troubled times,” added Smiley. “KBLA assigns itself the task of elevating the climate conversation connected to Black health outcomes by amplifying the voices of those who are most impacted by the climate catastrophes we are all witnessing in real-time.”

A Star Is Born!

By Kathy Carr
President, Howie Carr Radio Network (HCRN)

TALKERS EXCLUSIVE

Kathy Carr IDAfter the first White House press briefing by the youngest presidential press secretary in history, the calls, emails and texts keep flowing in to me about Karoline Leavitt.

Even some of my liberal relatives have said, “She sounds very confident and knowledgeable.” That’s because she is, I texted back. Often in this business, people will try to push a young person in front of you. They will tell you, in all sincerity if not total accuracy, that this person is the next big star. In the case of Karoline Leavitt, my client was right.

Karoline LeavittBack in 2022, we were at a client remote, and the owner told me he wanted to introduce us to this young lady who had been a White House aide near the end of Trump’s term. “She is going places,” our client told us.

At age 24, Karoline was running for Congress in the seacoast district of New Hampshire. She was an underdog in the GOP primary to an establishment candidate, as well as a former U.S. senator’s wife. Don’t worry about it, our client told us, Karoline is going to win. When you hear something like that, you try not to roll your eyes, but you are, shall we say, skeptical.

But this time, at a car dealership in Portsmouth, it took about 45 seconds to realize that she had it. She worked the showroom like a seasoned political pro, shaking every hand in the place. She looked me in the eye and shook my hand firmly, but not too firmly. She spoke in complete sentences with no ahhhs or ummms. She didn’t punctuate every sentence with some variation of “like” or “you know.”

Despite being heavily outspent, Karoline handily won the GOP primary against her older, better-financed opponents. I truly felt she was going to defeat the Democrat incumbent. I donated to her campaign more than once.

We were stunned when she did not win. I spoke to her the day after the loss and told her that although it might not seem like it now, everything happens for a reason and that something better is coming. I was just trying to make her feel better, but this time it was true.

Howie Carr

Soon after her defeat, we met for lunch, and I tried to recruit her as a full-time employee for our radio network. She politely declined, but did work for us as a freelancer and fill-in talk show host. (She was great!) At the end of her stint, she took us out to dinner, picked up the check, gave us a bottle of champagne and posted a video on her (very popular) social media promoting Howie’s latest book. We left dinner that night thinking, Karoline is going places.

So, there she was this week at the podium in the Brady Briefing Room in her beautiful magenta jacket and perfect make-up. But this is no dumb blonde. Her poise is beyond impressive, and everyone now realizes she is not just a pretty face. To the briefing she brought no binder, just brains.

Karoline Leavitt

In the winter of 2023, knowing that President Trump was going to run again, we invited her to dinner with us at Mar-A-Lago. Howie made a point of saying hello to POTUS and putting in a good word for the president’s former White House aide. With thumbs up, she posed for a quick photo with President Trump and Howie. She was wearing a jazzy crème and green dress – she always looks like a million bucks!

We are not the sole reason she was hired for the campaign, but we are proud to have played even a small part.

People often ask me what the most rewarding part is about being in the media. Some think it is the money, influence or perks. Those are all great but what a rush it is to see the next big star being born. And her name is Karoline Leavitt.

U.S. Senate Reintroduces AM Radio Bill

It would also, among other things, ensure that AM is easily accessible to the driver and require motor vehicles that do not include AM radio (in the period between enactment and prior to the Transportation Secretary issuing the new rule) to be labeled as such to consumers in a clear and conspicuous manner.” The NAB responds to the news saying that “recent disasters like the Los Angeles wildfires and hurricanes in the southeast underscore AM radio’s unique role in delivering evacuation orders, emergency alerts and recovery information under the most challenging conditions. Its unmatched reach ensures critical information reaches those who need it, including rural and remote areas where cellular networks and internet access are unreliable.” NAB adds that “more than 125 organizations, including the National Emergency Management Association, American Farm Bureau Federation, AARP, Native Public Media, and the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, have endorsed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. Their support underscores AM radio’s vital role in public safety and its importance to communities nationwide.”

NJ Gubernatorial Candidate Files Complaint Against Townsquare and Bill Spadea

According to a report in the New Jersey Globe, Republican candidate for governor Jack Ciattarelli has filed a complaint with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission alleging that fellow candidate Billim Spadea – morning drive host at WKXW-FM, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5” – and his employer Townsquare Media created an illegal “shadow campaign.” The complaint says Townsquare used radio, social media and public events to promote Spadea’s campaign thereby providing him with “hundreds of thousands of dollars” worth of advertising. Ciattarelli is asking the Commission to deny Spadea’s campaign access to matching public funds and to fine Townsquare for the campaign violations. Spadea’s campaign says the complaint is baseless and that it has complied with election law throughout his campaign. See the New Jersey Globe story here.

WWO: Data Reveals the Cost of Dull Ads

This week’s Cumulus Media | Westwood One AudioActive Group blog looks at the creative side of audio ads. The Institute for Practitioners in Advertising produced data that reveals brands must spend significantly more media money on dull ads compared to interesting, non-dull ads. Looking at key findings from “Another Dullimg Whitepaper: The Extraordinary Cost of Dull,” the analysis notes that 1) Neutrality, the absence of emotion, is the most common reaction to ads; 2) Business-to-business ads are even duller with greater neutral “feeling nothing” responses; and 3) Marketers have two jobs: Converting existing demand and creating future demand. Only about 5% of customers are in-market and “rational and dull copy using tightly target media” has its purpose here. But for the 95% of the customers not in-market and thinking about the category, “The objective is to create ads that produce positive feelings, especially happiness. If an ad makes people feel good, it’s more memorable and more effective at building positive associations with a brand.” See the complete blog post here.
