SiriusXM and Kevin Hart Ink New Deal

SiriusXM extends its relationship with comic Kevin Hart and his entertainment company Hartbeat via new multi-year deal. Under the agreement, Hartbeat will continue to curate content at the intersection of comedy and culture for Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud Radio channel. Hart will also continue to host his popular podcast, “Gold Minds with Kevin Hart,” which debuts its new season featuring Hart in conversation with Ryan Coogler. In addition, Hartbeat will produce a slate of new, talent-led programs, including “Love Thang with Punkie Johnson” and “One Song with Diallo and LUXXURY,” hosted by Diallo Riddle and Blake “LUXXURY” Robin. SiriusXM president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein comments, “Over the last five years, Kevin has become a cornerstone of SiriusXM’s comedy programming, and we’re absolutely thrilled to deepen our relationship with Kevin and the whole Hartbeat team. “92.9 The Game” in Atlanta Unveils New Morning Show

Audacy sports talk outlet WZGC-FM, Atlanta “92.9 The Game” announces the launch of its new “morning sports and lifestyle show” called “The Morning Shift on 92.9 The Game” that stars (pictured from l-r) Tiffany Blackmon, Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan and airs from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. The trio takes over for current morning host John Fricke, who will continue with the station in a new role to be announced at a later date. “92.9 The Game” brand manager Mike Conti says, “Tiffany, Mike and Beau are going to offer a unique combination of perspectives on sports, culture, current events and day-to-day life that our listeners will find to be informative, entertaining and funny. They’ve quickly developed a chemistry that I think will lead to a fast-paced, fun, high-energy show each morning.” Blackmon also serves as a sideline reporter on ESPN’s coverage of college football and the XFL. Johnson played for the Atlanta Falcons for five years and has been working in TV and radio in Birmingham and Atlanta. He’ll also be a part of the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network’s pre- and post-game shows. Morgan is a 15-year veteran of sports radio in Atlanta, most recently as the executive producer of the station’s afternoon drive show, “Dukes and Bell,” and the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network. Along with the new morning show, the station will also launch a new early morning show called, “The Hometown Take,” hosted by morning show producer Dylan Mathews that airs from 5:00 am to 6:00 am.

Simon Conway Talks with Ron DeSantis During Iowa Visit

Elizabeth Westfield to Host Radio Health Journal

The public affairs program “Radio Health Journal” has a new host as voice talent Elizabeth Westfield takes over for the retiring Reed Pence. He leaves his role as host of the show after more than three decades. Westfield most recently served with Champaign, Illinois radio company Illini Radio Group voicing commercials and hosting on-air shows. “Radio Health Journal” was launched in 1992 and is distributed by American Urban Radio Networks to more than 630 affiliate stations. AURN says, “The addition of Westfield rings in a new era for the show in that it’s now largely female-led, produced and voiced. With March being Women’s History Month, it’s important to honor the contributions of the countless women across history who’ve fought tirelessly for equal rights and opportunities.”

— Cumulus Media’s Westwood One –  the official network radio partner of the NCAA – is presenting the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Listeners will be able to hear play-by-play action from all 67 men’s basketball games including 32 first-round and second-round games, plus regional semifinals and finals. Westwood One is also broadcasting live coverage of NCAA Men’s Final Four on Saturday, April 2 and the National Championship Game on Monday, April 3 in both English and Spanish.

Tip: If you’re auditioning for voiceover work, call yourself a “voice actor,” not an announcer.

The sound-alike DJ caricature delivery blends-into the blah-blah-blah that advertisers need to cut-through. Which explains why TV and movies actors are heard on so many national TV ads.

Listen carefully. You’ve heard George Clooney for Budweiser, Julia Roberts for Nationwide Insurance, Morgan Freeman for Visa. Tim Allen invites you to “Pure Michigan,” John Goodman pitches Dunkin, and Rashida Jones says fly Southwest. Not on-camera endorsements, unidentified voice-overs, with unaffected delivery. Network radio spots for The Home Depot? Actor John Lucas NAILS ‘em (pun intended).

Listen to the scene-setting voice-overs that “Magnum PI” star Jay Hernandez does within episodes, every bit as intimate as his predecessor Tom Selleck’s were in the 1980s version. Those Florida Orange Juice commercials Selleck V/O’d a while back sounded so effortless.

And maybe that’s the key. Don’t announce-AT-me, just tell me.

Brent Axe Axed from WTLA, Syracuse for SU Criticism

Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson reports that Galaxy Media Partners president and CEO Ed Levine fired sports talk host Brent Axe for being “too negative toward Syracuse University sports.” The program “On the Block with Brent Axe” has been cancelled and Axe is no longer an employee of Galaxy. Levine is being straightforward about the reason for Axe’s dismissal. He says, “I had a problem with the content of the show. I’m an SU fan. I’m sorry, but I bleed Orange. I’m not going to apologize for that, and I think a fair reading of the Orange is appropriate. I understand [Galaxy has] a business relationship [with Syracuse], that Coach [Jim] Boeheim and I are personal friends and he’s an investor in my company. I understand and acknowledge all of that. We’ve called it pretty fair, and I would argue we’ve been tough on SU when the on-field or off-field events warrant it. I just think over the past six months it took a different tone and became overly dark and negative. I don’t think that’s what Syracuse fans want to hear.” For his part Axe tells Syracuse.com, “I had a responsibility to give an honest, fair and thorough opinion to my audience. I certainly wasn’t perfect, but I don’t regret anything about the approach of the show. We put listeners on the air, and we gave them the opportunity to say what they needed to say. Urban One to Cash Out of MGM National Harbor; Will File 10-K Late

In an 8-K filing with the Securities Exchange Commission, Urban One reports that its wholly owned subsidiary Radio One Entertainment Holdings, LLC has issued a put notice with respect to 100% of its interest in MGM National Harbor, LLC. The latter is now required to repurchase the Radio One’s put interest for cash and it should get $145.5 million at the time of settlement. At the same time, Urban One is notifying the SEC that is unable to file its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2022 before the March 16 deadline. The company says it expects to file the report within the 15-day extension period. Urban One adds, “The company noted it expects its auditor will issue an unqualified opinion on the consolidated financial statements. The company has identified material weaknesses in the company’s internal control over financial reporting and as a result, expects some of its internal controls over financial reporting and disclosure controls will be ineffective as of December 31, 2022. The Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2022 will describe these material weaknesses, and the company is implementing plans to remediate them.”

Glenn Beck Buys Roe v Wade Historical Artifact

The Texas Tribune reports that Premiere Networks nationally syndicated talk host Glenn Beck has acquired the original receipt from the court filing from the last living attorney from the team that argued the Roe v Wade case in the U.S. Northern District Court of Texas. Beck bought the receipt from attorney Linda Coffee’s archives via an independent auction house and paid more than $600,000 for it. The Tribune quotes Beck saying on his radio show, “Roe vs. Wade is history, and now that history is in the hands of a pro-life conservative.” He also says “Coffee’s archives will debut this summer as part of an exhibit called ‘The Blueprints of Freedom,’ adding, “The Roe archives’ inclusion in the exhibit will underscore Coffee’s bloody legacy that has been undone in the service of life and the proper reading of the Constitution.” Read the story here.

Talk Host Steve Kass Elected into RI Heritage Hall of Fame

Longtime Rhode Island talk radio host Steve Kass is being elected into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and will be honored at a ceremony on Saturday, May 6 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Pavilion in Providence. Kass was inducted into the RI Radio Hall of Fame in 2010. He began his radio career in 1958 as a rock ‘n’ roll disc jockey. He also led the pop group Steve Kass and the Love Larks that was recorded by Bobby Day for Class Records. They performed on TV and toured for a while. Kass changed careers and launched several successful businesses but returned to radio and TV in 1979, hosting shows at WPRO-AM and WHJJ-AM in Providence. Today, he hosts an eponymous podcast.

Monitor: Talk Radio Rises as a New Battleground for Latino Voters

A piece in the Christian Science Monitor by Simon Montlake takes a deep dive into the battle for Hispanic listeners – and voters – on the nation’s radio waves. The recent sale of Univision’s “Radio Mambi” (WAQI-AM, Miami) to George Soros-backed Latino Media Network and that company’s acquisition of other AM signals in Florida, New York, Illinois, Arizona, California, Texas, and Nevada created a stir and cries of “left-wing censorship” from conservatives. The rhetoric surrounding these deals is part and parcel of the politicized nature of media in the modern world. In the piece, Montlake observes, “The $60 million takeover – and the reactions it has sparked – is another flashpoint in the national battle to win over Latino voters, a fast-growing demographic that has long leaned Democratic but has lately grown more receptive to Republicans. So far, most Spanish-language radio in the U.S. has been focused on music and entertainment, not news or commentary. Which in the eyes of many makes it an untapped and lucrative means of political persuasion.” Read the Monitor story here.

77 WABC Adds Live & Local Shows to Sundays

Red Apple Media Group’s news/talk WABC, New York announces the addition of “Cut to the Chase with Laura Curran” (4:00 pm to 5:00 pm) and “Positively Ernie & Patricia with Ernie Anastos and Patricia Stark” (5:00 pm to 6:00 pm ) to its Sunday program schedule. Laura Curran is a former reporter for The Daily News and The New York Post who also served as Nassau County executive from 2018-2021. She’s filled in on the station’s “Cats & Cosby” show. Ernie Anastos recently began producing his twice-daily feature “Positively Ernie with Ernie Anastos” for the station. For this new show he partners with Patricia Stark – a certified personal & executive coach who heads Patricia Stark Communications. Red Apple Media Group CEO John Catsimatidis says, “At 77 WABC, we’re doing radio the way it’s supposed to be…. live, local, and BIG. We got rid of all the brokered weekend programs and we’re replacing them with big-name hosts like Ernie and Laura. I know we’re doing radio the right way because we’re winning!”

— NPR promotes Michel Martin to new a role as co-host of “Morning Edition.” Martin, who has been the host of the weekend edition of “All Things Considered” since 2015, takes over for Rachel Martin who is exiting to pursue other media opportunities. She begins working alongside Steve Inskeep, A Martínez and Leila Fadel on March 27.

The Los Angeles TimesJames Rainey writes a profile piece this week about Tavis Smiley, former PBS personality and current owner of KBLA, Los Angeles – a talk station targeting the Black community. The piece addresses Smiley’s legal battles with PBS after he was accused of sexually harassing multiple women, the court case he lost and one he’s still involved in. — Edison Research is presenting a four-part series through its Edison’s Weekly Insights exploring the “power of traditional AM/FM radio in the U.S. This week’s edition reports, based on Edison’s Share of Ear study, “Listeners age 13+ in the U.S. spend 59% of their daily, ad-supported audio time with AM/FM radio, more time than with all other ad-supported audio sources combined, including YouTube, podcasts, and ad-supported streaming services. AM/FM radio is the top ad-supported audio source for all ages in the U.S., including Gen Z (age 13-24) who spend 33% of their daily ad-supported audio time with AM/FM radio, more than for any other ad-supported platform.” Read the story here.

The Uniqueness of the American Radio Talk Show Host

Talk show talent, program directors, show producers and broadcast business decision-makers represent the core readership of this publication. Sometimes we are so close to something that we fail to see it for what it really is. That is the case of the “talk show host” in American radio. Michael Harrison refers to the often-shameless targeting of audiences as “the daily dance of affirmation.” I view the daily process of radio talk show hosting at its very core, as “the daily dance of freedom.”

Talk show hosts are a rare breed and endangered species who enjoy a unique freedom in American radio. Hosts can actually talk about whatever they want! Of course, they are subject to both the rewards and consequences of this freedom – but the process of doing a live talk show, sparked by opinion and controversy, is so spontaneous and uniquely dynamic that it cannot be controlled on a minute-to-minute level without losing the flavor that makes it so special and long-lived.

During a decade as a top-five market and network talk show host, no one has ever told me what to talk about. And for zillions of years as a programming executive prior to that, I never told a host what to talk about on their next show.

Talk hosts are granted remarkable radio freedom!  Music jocks haven’t had that freedom since the 1960s. Music jocks have to get up the courage to ask permission to merely change the order of songs on their play list. Talk show hosts “own” three or four hours a day on a significant station or stations to say whatever they wish. That’s amazing! At first that freedom was a daunting, humbling challenge for me. However, I have been guided by my experience in programming or having launched some of the world’s most successful talk stations.

Based on that experience from both sides of the mic, here’s what works: Talk can entertain a listener of any age and demographic if the host talks about the listener’s day. I talk about my day framed for a listener, one listener – water in the basement, trouble with the sister-in-law, the parent-teacher conference, more trouble with the sister-in-law, the check engine light in the car never wants to go out, life at Walmart. I talk from a place of trust.

Trust that events that poke the landscape of our lives are a very big deal. Trust that I will never find the “right” topic on any editorial page. Trust that you, dear listener, already know who you are going to vote for in any election and that this English major does not have the magic wand to change your mind. Trust that my on-air opinion must never waiver or we have no show.

Listen to talk shows and stations that reach demos under 50:  WMMS, Cleveland; KFI’s John and KenCasey Bartholomew at WBAP, Dallas; KMBZ, Kansas City; KFBK, Sacramento; the Elvis Duran Show; and streaming with Bubba the Love Sponge or Phil Hendrie. Those successful shows embrace the scope of conversation two best friends would have on the phone today. If two best friends would discuss a topic, why wouldn’t you share it on the air? If two best friends would never discuss it, why would you ever put it on the air?

Audacy Names Chase Daniels OM for Cleveland Stations

Audacy announces that programming pro Chase Daniels is the new operations manager for the Cleveland station group that includes sports talk WKRK-FM “92.3 The Fan” and four music stations. Daniels moves to Cleveland from the company’s Madison, Wisconsin cluster where he served in a similar role. He takes over for Dave Popovich, who recently retired. Audacy Cleveland SVP and market manager Tom Herschel says, “Having Chase join us from our stations in Madison is a testament to the depth of talent at Audacy and the work he’s done there. Western Massachusetts broadcaster and public relations pro Mark Auerbach (pictured) has revealed his dramatic battle with stage 5 kidney disease in an effort to raise awareness of the need for organ donors and hopefully find a donor for his own situation. Auerbach hosts “ArtsBeat,” “On The Mark,” and “Athenaeum Spotlight,” on WCPC-TV 15 and WSKB, Westfield, MA. He’s also the ArtsBeat reporter for Pioneer Valley Radio. Auerbach says people can help by taking any of three steps: 1) becoming an organ donor upon your death; 2) consider donating while you’re alive (get details at kidney.org); and 3) donating to him at Mass General Hospital’s living donors program (https://mghlivingdonors.org/). Audacy Boosts Coverage Area for Greenville’s News/Talk WYRD-FM

A frequency swap between Audacy’s news/talk WYRD-FM and adult contemporary WSPA-FM on March 28 will give the news/talk outlet substantially better coverage in the Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina market. WYRD-FM will rebrand as “News/Talk 98.9 WORD, The Voice of the Carolinas” and enjoy the expanded reach provided by the 100,000-watt Class C signal while WSPA-FM moves to the 25,000-watt Class C3 signal at 106.3 FM. Audacy says the change gives WORD access to a quarter million more adults 35+ from the South Carolina/Georgia border to Asheville, North Carolina, while covering parts of four South Carolina congressional districts and several North Carolina congressional districts. Audacy SVP and market manager for Greenville-Spartanburg Steve Sinicropi comments, “We are committed to delivering quality audio and content with our massive reach to our audiences. SiriusXM Cuts Workforce by 8%

News of satellite radio firm SiriusXM cutting 8% of its staff – about 475 jobs – is being widely reported after CEO Jennifer Witz sent a companywide email revealing the company’s plans. In her comments regarding the company’s 2022 fourth quarter and full-year operating results, Witz called 2022 a “strong year,” but added, “In 2023, we expect SiriusXM to deliver strong operating performance and generate significant cash, even as we face a challenging economic environment and continue to make material investments in our technology infrastructure.” Witz adds, “Over the past five years, our business has grown and expanded with the addition of new acquisitions, business lines, and revenue streams. Now, we have completed an assessment of our departments and functions to determine where we can improve collaboration, consolidate teams to achieve greater efficiencies, and ultimately, design an organization structure that is best positioned to achieve our priorities. As a result, nearly every department across SiriusXM will be impacted. We believe the new operational design will allow us to move faster and more effectively as we take on new challenges across our business.” While numerous companies report net losses each quarter, SiriusXM has been reporting net income for some time. The company reported net income of $1.2 billion for 2022, but that was a decline of $100 million from the $1.3 billion in net income it reported for 2021.

NAB Crystal Finalists Revealed; KTAR-FM to Receive Heritage Award

The National Association of Broadcasters announces the finalists for the 36th annual NAB Crystal Radio Awards that recognize radio stations for their year-round commitment to community service. The finalists will be celebrated, and the winners announced during the We Are Broadcasters Awards ceremony at 10:00 am on April 18 on the Main Stage at NAB Show in Las Vegas. Noam Laden Returns to WABC, New York as News Director

New York City news pro Noam Laden joins Red Apple Media Group’s 77 WABC as news director. He was most recently serving with iHeartMedia’s crosstown news/talk WOR as morning news anchor. In his new role with WABC, Laden will host the daily 5:00 am “WABC News Hour with Noam Laden” and will anchor the top-of-the-hour news during the “Sid & Friends Morning Show.” He’ll also be responsible for all WABC news content and distribution, on-air and online. Laden served with WABC from 2003 to 2018 in which he was news director, news anchor on the “Imus In the Morning” show, and co-host on the Geraldo Rivera show. Laden says, “I’m very excited to join the new 77 WABC. The station has a terrific lineup of hosts and the ratings are soaring. It’s great to be part of a winning team with passionate owners. “Alabama Unfiltered Radio” Joins WACV-FM, Montgomery

The talk radio program “Alabama Unfiltered Radio” starring host Scott Beason joins the lineup of Bluewater Broadcasting’s WACV-FM, Montgomery, Alabama “News Talk 93.1” in the 9:00 am to 12:00 noon daypart, beginning Wednesday (3/8).  The program is produced by the nonprofit LLC 1819 News, which says, “Beason is an Alabama native and former member of the Alabama Legislature, serving both in the House and Senate, and he has prior experience hosting Yellowhammer Radio.” 1819 News says, “From politics to faith, ‘Alabama Unfiltered Radio,’ covers the topics you won’t hear in the mainstream media. Listen in on dinner-table-style discussions between Scott and his co-hosts, Amie Beth Shaver and Allison Sinclair, on important topics you actually care about — news, current events and culture from a traditional conservative, Southern, Christian worldview presented in a very entertaining and never boring way.”

Longtime Tampa Bay Rays radio broadcaster Dave Wills died early Sunday morning (3/5) at the age of 58. Wills and Andy Freed have been the radio broadcast team since the 2005 season. Prior to joining the Rays, Wills was part of the Chicago White Sox broadcast team in which he hosted pre- and post-game programs.

— Cumulus Media’s Westwood One continues its presentation of NCAA basketball conference championships this week and into next weekend. Westwood One will also broadcast Selection Sunday, which will reveal the 68-team field for both the men’s and the women’s tournaments. Jason Horowitz will host Selection Sunday coverage with former coach PJ Carlesimo serving as the men’s analyst and Debbie Antonelli as the women’s analyst.

— LiveOne reports that paid memberships for its subsidiaries Slacker Radio and PodcastOne grew by over 587,000 in the past 12 months and over 100,000 in the first two months of calendar 2023. Total members, including paid and ad-sponsored, are now at 2.85 million. LiveOne CEO Rob Ellin comments, “We are thrilled to have exceeded 2 million premium members on our platform, and we owe much of our growth to our B2B content partnerships, such as our longstanding collaboration with Tesla. WBAL, Baltimore Names T.J. Smith Midday Host

Hearst Television’s WBAL-AM/W268BA “NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5” announces that T.J. Smith is its new midday talk host. Smith is a familiar voice to the WBAL audience. He served as spokesperson for the Baltimore City Police Department from 2015 to 2018 in which he appeared regularly on the “C4 Show” spotlighting unsolved cases. He later served as press secretary for Baltimore County executive John Olszewski and ran for mayor of Baltimore in 2020. He takes over the midday show after Kimberly Klacik exited the position following seven months on the job. WBAL director of programming Jeff Wade says, “The WBAL audience has known and respected T.J. for years for his frank and honest dialogue on the issues that matter most to people living and working in Baltimore. Whether it’s policing, politics, or talking Orioles and Ravens, we can’t think of anyone better suited to sit behind the WBAL microphone weekdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.” Smith comments, “As a native Baltimorean who has gone to school, worked, run for office and even suffered loss in the city, I’m very familiar with the feel of the public from west Baltimore to the waterfront. WBT-AM/FM, Charlotte and Host Brett Winterble Agree to Extension

Urban One’s WBT-AM/FM, Charlotte signs afternoon drive talk host Brett Winterble to a multi-year contract extension. WBT says, “Winterble arrived at WBT in February of 2020 at a critical time in the U.S. The country was in the middle of one of the most news-worthy election cycles in history and the early stages of a global pandemic. VoodooVision Consumer Study Findings Revealed

NuVoodoo Media Services announces that it is releasing the results of its VoodooVision nationwide consumer study in a series of free webinars this month. The study of more than 5,300 respondents between the ages of 14 and 54 is intended to “guide marketers through the myriad options available in the digital media and audio entertainment space.” NuVooDoo says, “The VoodooVision consumer study findings reveal that despite the steady increase of Internet-connected infotainment systems in vehicles, broadcast radio continues to hold its own. It remains competitive with podcasts and DSPs (Digital Streaming Providers, such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and others) when consumers are in vehicles or public transit during the early morning and late afternoon commutes, and on weekends.” Respondents were asked to select a top preference from a list of audio entertainment choices and their top choices were (for morning commuters), broadcast FM/AM radio with 19% of the sample, followed closely by podcasts, with streaming coming in at third. The study indicates the competition is closer during the late afternoon commute, where podcasts and streaming barely eclipse radio as the top choice among commuters at 15% vs. 14% of the sample, respectively. And radio remains competitive as an audio entertainment favorite among listeners on the go during the weekend, sharing the top spot with DSP’s and eking ahead of podcasts. The radio program airs every Sunday this month at 7:00 pm.

— SiriusXM announces that six-time PGA TOUR winner Rocco Mediate is joining the roster of hosts on its SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Mediate will have his own show, “The Rocco Hour,” which he will host exclusively for every Tuesday at 6:00 pm ET beginning March 7. “I have 38 years of PGA TOUR experience. I see and remember everything! I have so much to say and I’m excited to have my own show on SiriusXM where I can share it with our listeners.”
