Hand to Host WWTN Middays. After being a fill-in talent on WWTN “Super Talk 99.7 WTN” last October through this past April, Chris Hand will return to the Cumulus Media Nashville news/talk outlet next Monday (7/17) for 9:00 am – 12:00 noon duties. He succeeds Michael Delgiorno, who exited several months ago. Hand previously was media director for Turning Point USA and worked in Pittsburgh at hot AC WLTJ.

KNX to Cover SAG-AFTRA Strike in Special.  Following the SAG-AFTRA National Board’s vote to strike today, Audacy’s all news KNX, Los Angeles will present a KNX In Depth “Instant Special” – Hollywood on Strike: What Now? It will dig into how the dynamics of the strike change with the actors joining the writers on the picket lines, what the long-term impact will be, and how it’s affecting the larger SoCal economy. The program will air at 1:00 pm PT in the normal KNX “In Depth” timeslot and will re-air in afternoon drive at 5:00 pm and again at 8:00 pm. The station will release it on-demand at the conclusion of the program.

KTXX To Jettison Sports Talk on 104.9. Per a Twitter post, Genuine Austin Radio’s KTXX “The Horn” will drop its sports talk programming on 104.9 FM as of the first of August. “The Horn,” however will continue on KTAE 1260 AM and K270CO 101.9 FM.

Armstrong & GettyWBEN/Buffalo Adds the Armstrong & Getty Show.  The Armstrong & Getty Show has added yet another major market – WBEN, Buffalo. The Audacy-owned outlet is one of the most respected news/talk radio stations in the country having won numerous state, regional, and national awards for its news reporting.  It is also one of the country’s heritage stations, tracing its beginning to 1922.  WBEN operations director/Audacy news talk format VP Tim Wenger tells TALKERS, “We’re thrilled to have Armstrong & Getty as part of the evening lineup at WBEN. PodcastOne Obtains Rights.  LiveOne subsidiary PodcastOne obtains exclusive network distribution/advertising sales rights to “Some More News” and its Cody Johnston & Katy Stoll-hosted spinoff podcast, “Even More News.” PodcastOne president Kit Gray notes, “With ‘Some More News’ and ‘Even More News,’ Cody and Katy host two intelligent, insightful and incredibly funny vodcasts. Their engaged audiences pair well with our existing programming. As we enter into a never-ending cycle of election year news, we’re looking forward to Cody’s and Katy’s comedic take on what promises to be an endless flood of attention-grabbing headlines. Portnoy Joins ABC News Radio.  Here just yesterday (TALKERS, Tuesday, 7/11), it was reported that, “Following an eight-and-a half-year run with CBS News Radio, White House correspondent Steven Portnoy is exiting CBS News ‘for a new opportunity.’ It didn’t take long to learn where he’s landing as ABC Audio vice president Liz Alesse today notes Portnoy is national correspondent for ABC News Radio. In a memo, she writes, “Steven has earned his reputation as an insightful, straightforward journalist with over two decades of reporting on politics and breaking news. His work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. As we embark on another pivotal presidential election season, ABC News Radio is committed to upholding those high ideals; Steven’s integrity and tenacity as a journalist will help us achieve that mission.” It is a homecoming for Portnoy who joined ABC News in 2002 as an intern for the White House unit of “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.” In 2006, he was named Washington correspondent for ABC News Radio, providing coverage of the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections and the 2011 death of Osama bin Laden. Portnoy extensively reported on the recent prisoner swap that led to the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from Russia.

WSJ: Audacy Initiating Debt Restructuring Discussions. Per a Wall Street Journal report, Audacy is about to initiate discussions with creditors regarding a restructuring of the company’s $1.9 billion of debt. Lawyers representing two different groups of creditors have reportedly signed nondisclosure agreements. The report states that one group of senior lenders has hired one law firm, while another group of second lien bondholders has employed another entity to represent them in confidential negotiations. Audacy executed a thirty-for-one reverse stock split at the end of June to initiate compliance with the New York Stock Exchange.

Alpha Portland Change.  Alpha Media Portland (Oregon) content director Keith Abrams exits as his position has been eliminated. The Alpha Media Portland cluster includes news/talk KXL “FM 101 News”; sports talk KXTG “750 The Game”; and news/talk KUFO “Freedom 970.”

Bannister Joins WONE.  Starting next Monday (7/17), Marty Bannister will begin hosting a daily 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm show on iHeartMedia Dayton sports talk WONE “Fox Sports 980.” Bannister does play-by-play of Ohio University men’s and women’s basketball for ESPN3 and high school sports for Spectrum. He previously worked in Columbus as an update anchor for sports talk WBNS-FM “97.1 The Fan.”

TN HOF Banquet To Honor Legacy Class. The Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame awards ceremony and banquet later this month (7/29) in Columbia, Tennessee is a sell-out. The “Legacy Class of 2023” includes: Phil Valentine (Nashville); Sam Phillips (Memphis); E.G. Blackman (Nashville); Johnny Eagle (Chattanooga); Art Gilliam (Memphis); Al “Adams” Johnson (Knoxville); Devon O’Day (Nashville) and Dick Ellis (Tri-Cities). Joining the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame’s board of directors for a two-year term is Jeff Jarnigan from Cumulus Media Knoxville. In addition, Melissa McDonald returns to the board.   

Dr Daliah Wachs and Jimmy GaroppoloLas Vegas Abuzz Over Raiders and Jimmy Garoppolo.  Nationally syndicated, Las Vegas-based TALKERS Heavy Hundred host Dr. Daliah Wachs of the Genesis Communications Network met and received a jersey signed by the new Las Vegas Raider‘s quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The two are pictured (right) at an NFL “Salute To Service” event at Nellis Air Force Base.  Wachs tells TALKERS, “The region is hopeful that Garoppolo will add that winning spark to the team if only he stays healthy.”

WPEN-FM “97.5 The Fanatic” afternoon co-host Hunter Brody and assistant program director Eric Camille have exited the Beasley Media Group Philadelphia sports talk outlet. Former Phillies relief pitcher Ricky Bottalico; Tyrone Johnson; and Jen Scordo remain in WPEN-FM’s afternoon slot. Commenting to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Beasley Media Group notes, “The post-COVID months have been a particularly challenging time in our industry. Like other media companies, our markets have been directly impacted due to these uncertain economic conditions. As a result, we have proactively adjusted our operations accordingly to reflect the current financial climate.” Via a social media post, Brody indicates he will continue streaming on YouTube.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and SiriusXM expand their relationship that will enhance connectivity of FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) National Public Warning System. SiriusXM will give FEMA access to secure bandwidth on SiriusXM’s proprietary satellite radio system to provide additional connectivity between FEMA and the National Public Warning System (NPWS) network. SiriusXM senior vice president/general manager, signal distribution engineering Bridget Neville states, “By supplying this satellite-based backup for FEMA’s backbone communications system, SiriusXM helps to strengthen FEMA’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to weather-related crises and other emergencies. SiriusXM has worked extensively with FEMA over the years and we are proud of our efforts that aid in delivering critical emergency messages to the public. We look forward to deepening and expanding upon our relationship with FEMA through this program and additional opportunities to leverage our satellite network in the future.” Director of FEMA IPAWS Antwane Johnson adds, “A secure, trusted, capable and reliable technology ecosystem is the foundation of the IPAWS NPWS capability. IPAWS embraces innovative technologies and platforms, and SiriusXM’s satellite network helps reinforce our capabilities.”

In a pair of newspaper-related items, The New York Times announces plans to close its sports desk, while The Los Angeles Times sells the San Diego Union-Tribune to Alden Global Capital-owned MediaNews Group. The New York Times will rely on coverage from the Athletic, the subscription sports website it purchased last year for $550 million. In a letter to staff yesterday (Monday, 7/10), New York Times Co. chair A.G. Sulzberger and chief executive officer Meredith Kopit Levien write, “Though we know this decision will be disappointing to some, we believe it is the right one for readers and will allow us to maximize respective strengths of the Times’ and the Athletic’s newsrooms.” The paper’s sports writers and editors will be moved to different roles in the newsroom and – reportedly – no layoffs are planned. The Athletic lost $7.8 million in the first quarter of 2023, although subscribers have grown from one million in January 2022 to three million as of March 2023. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong and his family spent $500 million in June 2018 to buy that paper and the Union-Tribune from Chicago-based Tribune Publishing. While Soon-Shiong’s primary interest was in the Times, he pledged support for both newsrooms. A memo to the Union-Tribune staff announcing the deal said the Union-Tribune will need to “make some difficult staffing decisions. Reductions will be necessary to offset the slowdown in revenues as economic headwinds continue to impact the media industry.”

IBF Notes Its Fourth Anniversary

Independent Broadcasters Association LogoCoinciding with the Independent Broadcasters Foundation’s fourth anniversary are new enhancements (including a redesigned website which unveils today) and policies. To more effectively focus on members’ needs, the IBA implements a cap of 300 company members, with no limit on number of stations under a company. According to IBA president/executive director Ron Stone, “These improvements allow the IBA to grow into the best possible organization representing independent radio stations. Future members will have market exclusivity to IBA membership. All current members that share a market will be grandfathered in and are not affected by this change. A group is considered one company. Once we reach the 300-mark, membership will be closed. New members will only be received if the number of member companies drops below 300.” National cash contests will now include text-to-win capability and Stone states, “Participating member stations have experienced as much as 30X ROI from [those contests].” Only IBA member stations can participate in the September National Cash Contest; the deadline for stations and groups to register is in less than three weeks (7/31). An IBA member may be a single station or a group of stations, as long as the company is not traded on a public market.

Real Talk.” Senior vice president of programming Jeff Kapugi states, “We are excited to welcome a number of best-in-class personalities to ‘Freedom 104.7.’ We are confident [the station] will quickly become a favorite destination for DMV talk radio listeners.” Premiere Networks executive vice president of affiliate sales Peter Tripi adds, “We’re thrilled to have our industry-leading talk lineup join ‘Freedom 104.7 & 98.7 HD-2.’ These stellar talents will provide entertaining, unique and insightful views on the latest news, politics and events that Washington, DC listeners are looking for.” The station’s weekday lineup includes: “America’s First News” (6:00 am – 9:00 am); Glenn Beck (9:00 am – 12:00 noon); Clay Travis & Buck Sexton (12:00 noon – 3:00 pm); Sean Hannity (3:00 pm – 6:00 pm); Jesse Kelly (6:00 pm – 9:00 pm); “Our American Stories” (9:00 pm – 12:00 midnight); “Coast to Coast Early Edition” (12:00 midnight – 1:00 am); and “Coast to Coast AM with George Noory” (1:00 am – 6:00 am). Approximately six months ago (1/5), WWDC-HD2 and 104.7 translator station W284CQ became “iHeart Sports DC”; it was not listed in Nielsen Audio’s May 2023 sweep. Among persons 6+ in that ratings period, American University public radio news/talk WAMU ranks first (11.4); Hubbard all-news WTOP & WTLP “Washington’s Top News” is second (8.0); Cumulus Media news/talk WMAL “105.9 FM – Where Washington Comes To Talk” finishes seventh (4.7); and Audacy business news WDCH “Bloomberg 99.1 FM” ranks #22 (.5).

Monday Memo: Be Known for Knowing

“STIMULATING TALK.”  Like much of radio’s imaging wallpaper, this frayed 1990s promo cliché was station-centric, rather than a benefit statement explaining and assuring how habitual use is… useful.

“Stimulating” was an immeasurable claim. And won’t THEY be the judge of that? If our talkers – of any political stripe – are stimulating, their work speaks for itself.

“Talk” itself has baggage. Say “talk radio” at a backyard cookout populated by non-radio people, and someone will roll their eyes. Rush Limbaugh personified that “crazy uncle at Thanksgiving” who became the format caricature.

imAnd when what’s-talked-about sounds too much like yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that, it works against what ratings people call horizontal maintenance (same-time day-to-day tune-in). No names, but his first six words when I tuned in were “…and it will only get worse!” Stimulating?

Commercial Copy 101: Sell benefits, not features. Almost any station can sound instantly more-user-friendly by simply projecting “you” and “your” early and often in promo copy. “Because ONE traffic jam can jam-up your WHOLE day…”

News will save news/talk. Mass shootings du jour, deadly severe weather, inflation, Trump, Hunter’s laptop, and what-next has listeners wondering, “What NEXT?” Be known for knowing, and you will stimulate more tune-ins.

Five-year-old, Iowa-based RoadWorthy Drive Productions has been renamed TechMobility Productions. According to company chief executive officer – and a founding member of the Black Automotive Media Group Ken Chester, “We changed the name to better reflect the actual content of our weekly programming. Our previous branding was confusing to both the radio industry and our listeners.” TechMobility Productions produces/distributes “The TechMobility Show”; “The TechMobility Minute”; and “TechMobility In Focus.” More than 50 stations nationwide carry the company’s programming.

Former Missouri state representative Ted Farnen’s “Columbia Today” (4:00 pm – 6:00 pm) will debut next Monday (7/17) on Cumulus Media Columbia, MO news/talk KFRU. Cumulus Columbia vice president/market manager Greg Renoe remarks, “We are excited to have Ted join our KFRU line-up in the afternoons. WTMJ, Milwaukee Announces Show Host Additions

Good Karma Brands makes some changes to the talent hosting its talk shows on news/talk WTMJ, Milwaukee. Sandy Maxx moves from her co-anchor role on the station’s “Wisconsin’s Afternoon News” program to late mornings where she joins talk host Steve Scaffidi on the renamed “WTMJ NOW” show airing from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. At the same time, WTMJ sportscaster Greg Matzek joins the “Wisconsin’sim Afternoon News” program as co-host alongside John Mercure. WTMJ interim market manager Emily Dillinger states, “I am looking forward to fun and lively conversation about the news of the day, what it means and why it matters on ‘WTMJ NOW.’ Both Sandy and Steve are genuinely curious people who also have an infectious energy and the ability to relate to a variety of people, and I’m sure that will resonate with fans across Wisconsin.” Another tweak to the lineup it that “Wisconsin’s Morning News with Vince Vitrano and Erik Bilstad” will now air from 6:00 am to 9:00 am with a local news report at 5:00 am.

The Buffalo Bills and Audacy’s sports talk WGR, Buffalo say that interim play-by-play announcer Chris Brown – who took over for John Murphy at the end of last season as Murphy recovers from a stroke – will continue in that role for the 2023-2024 NFL season.

Woodward Radio Group radio stations – including news/talk WHBY and sports talk WSCO in Appleton, Wisconsin – in partnership with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, hosted the 5th annual Combat Hunger event that raised money and food to provide 52,580 meals for veterans facing hunger in Wisconsin’s Fox Valley.

John Gilliland Returns to Skyview Networks

Skyview Networks announces that news anchor and award-winning journalist John Gilliland is returning toim the company to serve as managing editor for Arizona News Radio and California Headline News, as well as afternoon anchor for California Headline News. Gilliland served in the position for almost 13 years before leaving to work for the Arizona Lottery. Gilliland takes over for the late Steve Clawson, who passed earlier this year.

Bonneville’s KHTK, Sacramento “Sactown Sports” announced the new midday show starring Kevin “Whitey” Gleason and Chris Watkins. The 10:00 am to 2:00 pm “Whitey & Watkins” program debuts on Monday (7/10). Bonneville Sacramento SVP and market manager Steve Cottimgrim says, “We are very excited to welcomeim Whitey Gleason back to Sactown Sports. The credibility that Whitey has with the sports audience in Northern California coupled with Chris’ passion and knowledge of the Sacramento Kings will certainly make this show a perfect fit for our ever-expanding ‘Sactown Sports’ brand.” Gleason most recently served with Audacy’s KGMZ-FM, San Francisco “95.7 The Game,” and prior to that he was part of the “Rise Guys” show on KHTK. O’Shaughnessy Family Selling New Rochelle Station for $8.15 Million

Several publications, including trade RBR/TVBR, are reporting that the family of the late William O’Shaughnessy is selling WVIP-FM, New Rochelle, New York, owned by O’Shaughnessy’s Hudson-imWestchester Radio, Inc to religious broadcaster Hope Media Group for $8.15 million. WVIP-FM has been airing programming brokered to Caribbean broadcasters. The O’Shaughnessy family still owns the company’s other station – news/talk WVOX-AM. O’Shaughnessy died in May of 2022 at the age of 84.

Broadcasters Foundation to Hold Media Mixer This Month

The Broadcasters Foundation of America launches a series of networking Media Mixers, with the first one scheduled for July 20 at the New York City studios of iHeartMedia. The event will be hosted by nationally syndicated radio air personality Angela Yee, who will be joined by other radio and TV on-air talent. BFoA says, “The purpose of the Media Mixers is twofold: to give up-and-coming professionals in broadcasting anim opportunity to mix and mingle not only with their peers, but with talent, managers, and executives; and to increase their awareness of the Broadcasters Foundation charitable mission.” BFoA president Tim McCarthy adds, “We’re very excited about this new initiative. It’s imperative that we reach the next generation of broadcast industry leaders with our message of help and hope, while giving them an opportunity to network with higher level professionals who they may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet.” The two-hour event is free, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. CORRECTION: New Jersey 101.5 to Continue Talk at Night

Yesterday (7/5), in our story about the staffing cuts at Townsquare Media’s WKXW-FM, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5,” TALKERS magazine reported that Eric Potts is replacing Steve Trevelise in evenings and would play music. Station PD Anne Gress tells TALKERS the evening show will remain live and dedicated to talk (Monday through Thursday as Friday nights belong to Big Joe Henry). Gress adds the evening show will feature various hosts including Eric Potts, Michele Pilenza, and Jeff Edelstein plus some new voices to cover the night daypart for the time being.

Good Karma Brands and WEPN-FM, New York “98.7 ESPN” announce that New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson will appear weekly on the station’s “Bart and Hahn” show – hosted by Bart Scott and Alan Hahn – during this NFL season.

New Hampshire Public Radio promotes Emily Quirk to program director. In this role, Quirk will serve as leader of live broadcast platforms and live events programming for the statewide public broadcaster. NHPR says, “In her new role, she will lead NHPR’s efforts to use radio, the livestream and events to maximize the impact of the organization’s journalism and to grow and diversify NHPR audiences on those platforms.”

Gemini XIII announces it is acquiring United Stations Radio Networks. iHeartMedia Chicago’s “Brilliantly Black Business Awards” Begins

The iHeartMedia Chicago station group that includes WMFN-AM “Black Information Network” and six music brands announces launch of the annual “Brilliantly Black Business Awards” presented by Wintrust Financial Corporation in partnership with the Chicago Urban League. Local businesses and listeners will have theim opportunity to nominate and vote for their favorite Black-owned business in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. A total of 10 winners will be selected to receive $100,000 of in-kind media on iHeartMedia Chicago radio stations and a small business development cohort from the Chicago Urban League. The categories include restaurants; beauty salons; churches; fashion; medical professionals; day care centers; nightlife; fitness trainers/gyms; financial/insurance; and realtors/brokers. iHeartMedia Chicago president Matt Scarano states, “I have a personal commitment along with iHeartMedia Chicago to support Black-owned businesses in Chicagoland. Jeff Katz and WRVA, Richmond Ink New Deal

Richmond talk radio personality Jeff Katz signs a new contract with Audacy to continue his role as afternoon drive host on news/talk WRVA. Orbyt Media Brings “Coast to Coast AM” Back to Canada

Premiere Networks’ U.S. syndicated overnight show “Coast to Coast AM,” hosted by George Noory, is returning to Canadian radio after a three-year hiatus through a deal with syndicator Orbyt Media. The programim is currently heard on Bell Media’s CKLW, Windsor, Ontario. Noory comments, “It’s great to be back on CKLW – The Big 8. What’s even cooler is that this was the first radio station I applied to work at when I was 21 years old living in Detroit. I’m looking forward to working with the team at Orbyt Media to expand ‘Coast to Coast AM’ across Canada!”

BIA Advisory: U.S. Local Ad Revenue Estimate Lowered

Due to “a mixed start in the economy this year and the tempered growth in digital advertising,” BIA Advisory Services is lowering its estimated U.S. local advertising revenue for 2023 to $161.7 billion – down from its original estimate of $165.7 billion. The company says that after looking at the first six months of the year, it decided the reduction was necessary. Vice president of forecasting and analysis Nicole Ovadia says, “After years of double-digit growth, we are seeing some headwinds that will have a significant impact on digital local advertising.” BIA is now expecting digital media revenue for 2023 to be $78 billion (down from its earlier estimate of $81 billion). Radio digital revenue – ex political – is expected to rise by 4.1% over 2022. “When examining the top spending sub-verticals, BIA advises that later in the year, growth is expected in Auto, and the company is raising expectations for Tier 3 – New Car Dealers, and Automotive Repair Services. Other important verticals for local advertising where BIA is raising expectations include Savings/Credit Institutions and Other Loan Services, Plumbers and HVAC, and Realtors.”

Benztown agrees to a deal with ARC Software, Inc to make ARC the primary affiliate research and maintenance tool for the company and its audio network, Benztown Radio Networks. Benztown VP, sales &im operations Masa Patterson says, “For years, we have been dealing with CRM programs with inferior functionality designed for other industries. Frank Comerford to Chair BFoA’s Celebrity Golf Tournament

The Broadcasters Foundation of America announces that NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships chief revenue officer and president of local sales Frank Comerford is the chair for the charity’s 2023 Celebrity Golf Tournament taking place at Greenwich Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut on September 11. The annualim fundraiser is the BFoA’s second largest annual fundraiser. Comerford says, “The Broadcasters Foundation is the only charity devoted exclusively to providing aid to our colleagues in broadcasting who are in dire need. For me, chairing the Celebrity Golf Tournament is an opportunity to give back.” BFoA president Tim McCarthy comments, “We’re grateful that Frank is donating his time and leadership to this year’s Celebrity Golf Tournament. The Celebrity Golf Tournament brings in a significant amount of the much-needed dollars we need to continue to help our colleagues who have fallen on tragic circumstances and need our help.”

Salem Receives Delisting Notice from Nasdaq

On Friday (6/23), Salem Media Group, Inc received notice from The Nasdaq Stock Market that Salem’s Common Stock failed to comply with the $1 minimum bid price required for continued listing on The Nasdaq Capital Market based upon the closing bid price of the Common Stock for the 32 consecutive business daysim prior to the date of the notice. Salem now has a compliance period of 180 calendar days in which to regain compliance for the minimum bid price requirement. That expires on December 20, 2023. To regain compliance, the minimum bid price of the Common Stock must meet or exceed $1.00 per share for a minimum of 10 consecutive business days at any time prior to the compliance date. In its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Salem says it intends to monitor the closing bid price of the Common Stock and may, if appropriate, consider implementing available options to regain compliance with the minimum bid price requirement under the Nasdaq Listing Rules.

Tim Donnelly to Host Afternoons at “99.9 The Fan” in Raleigh

Capitol Broadcasting Company announces that sports media pro Tim Donnelly is the new host of the afternoon drive program at WCMC-FM, Raleigh “99.9 The Fan,” effective in mid-July. Donnelly most recently served with Max Media’s WVSP-FM, Yorktown, Virginia “ESPN Radio 94.1.” He also serves as a weekend fill-in host for the CBS Sports Radio network. Capitol Broadcasting general manager Brian Grube says, “Tim has aim very successful track record in radio. His experience as a college athlete gives him a truly unique perspective. This is a robust market for sports. College rivalries dominate the landscape while local pro teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, NC Courage and Durham Bulls unite fans under one umbrella.
