Audacy: Radio Listeners Seek Election News

Audacy announces that its Election Tracker finds that a significant majority of AM/FM listeners – 70% ofim weekly radio listeners and 80% of weekly radio streamers – are actively tuning into election news on the radio. Audacy says, “It’s more than just staying informed; these listeners are inspired to make their voices heard at the polls. Local radio is essential for these audiences, with 74% saying it helps them grasp how election results impact their communities. For many, radio is the pulse of the nation’s agenda. WWO: Radio and Podcast Listeners Are Home Improvement Consumers

The most recent blog post from the Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group reveals data from research indicating that heavy AM/FM listeners and heavy podcast listeners “spend significantly more on home improvement than heavy TV viewers.” Other takeaways from the research include: 1) Audio is an idealim media platform to tout home improvement e-commerce as heavy AM/FM radio and podcast listeners are more likely to shop online; 2) AM/FM radio generates significant incremental reach for home improvement TV campaigns: Recent TV campaigns for The Home Depot saw significant lift in reach with the addition of AM/FM radio, especially among younger demos; 3) AM/FM radio generates three times the sales lift of TV in a historic Nielsen TV and AM/FM radio sales effect study for a home improvement retailer; and 4) Home improvement media plans are overweight on linear TV and underweight on audio: The optimized plan should consist of 45% AM/FM radio, 30% linear TV, and 24% podcasts. Lotus Launches Sports Talker in Sacramento

Lotus Communications will debut “FOX Sports 104.7 FM and 890 AM” on KSAC-AM/K284CM, Sacramentoim on Monday, September 2. The new sports talker will feature the FOX Sports Radio lineup in addition to the Sacramento-based program, “The Rob, Anybody, and Dawn Show,” (Rob Williams and Dawn Rossi) in morning drive.  Station general manager Kurt Bagelmann says, “Lotus is ecstatic to deliver a game-changing experience to Northern California listeners by combining the market’s most iconic morning show, ‘Rob, Anybody & Dawn,’ with the powerhouse lineup of FOX Sports Radio. Jim Farley Passes Away

Radio news legend Jim Farley has died as the result of a heart attack suffered while undergoing surgery toim treat an aneurysm, according to his family. Farley began his career in New York at 1010 WINS and would hold numerous positions in New York and network news over the years, including as managing editor at ABC Radio Networks. He is best remembered for serving as vice president of news & programming at all-news WTOP-FM, Washington from 1996 through his retirement in 2013. He worked as a news consultant after leaving WTOP and lived in Florida with his wife Jo.

TALKERS Editor Reports from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

TALKERS vice president and executive editor Kevin Casey recently made a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He says that in addition to the expected music memorabilia – guitars, clothing, and ephemera – there was an exhibit that told the story of radio’s crucial role in the rock and roll explosion of the 1950s and early 1960s. Another exhibit revealed the backlash against rock music from religious and conservative factions in the U.S. Casey is pictured above by an image of his musical hero Frank Zappa testifying before a congressional committee that was exploring mandatory labeling of records with “dirty” words. Casey muses, “It’s interesting to note that ‘culture warriors’ have always existed. Today, people assume they are Republicans, but in 1985 they were ‘bi-partisan’ on the matter of rock lyrics and led by Democratic U.S. Senator Al Gore’s then-wife, Tipper Gore. There was no legislation necessary because, sadly, the record industry caved to the pressure.”

Audacy raises more than $3.9 million for the Jimmy Fund, which supports adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston during the 22nd “WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon.” Audacy says that since 2002, the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon has raised over $73 million to improve the lives of cancer patients everywhere.

FOX News Digital finished July as the top news brand with multiplatform minutes and views, according to data from Comscore. FOX News Digital closed out the month reaching 3.9 billion total multiplatform minutes, 1.9 billion total multiplatform views, and 119 million total digital multiplatform unique visitors.

WDAY, Fargo Says Harris Campaign Misused its News Stories

Forum Communications’ news/talk WDAY-AM/FM, Fargo is considering its legal options with regard to its news headlines that were edited and then used by Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. According to The National Desk, WDAY managing partner Steve Hallstrom says the campaign edited the headline of a WDAYim story that was used in a Google ad to read: “Harris Picks Tim Walz – 215,000 MN Families Win.” WDAY says it wrote no such headline. Hallstrom tells The National Desk, “They lied to everybody who saw that ad, and they misled them into believing that there is a news organization, with a 100-year history in our community of doing good solid journalism, that not only took sides in a political debate, if you will, but also openly performed cheerleading exercises on behalf of that candidate in their news headlines in their story. That’s wrong.” Washington, DC television outlet WJLA-TV writes, “A source familiar with the Harris campaign’s advertisement team told Axios the campaign buys ads with news links to give more context to voters searching for information about Harris.” Hallstrom responds to that saying, “I don’t care what their intent was or what they were hoping to do. All I care about is what happened to us. Talk TV Legend Phil Donahue Dies at 88

Phil Donahue, creator and host of the daytime talk television program that featured his name, died at his home at age 88 after a long illness. The Cleveland native began his television career in Ohio and launched “The Phil Donahue Show” at WLWD-TV in Dayton, Ohio in 1967. The daytime talk show took on serious subjects instead of the lighter fare usually associated with daytime TV. Donahue also did subjects that were considered “low brow,” but his approach gave the audience the opportunity to ask questions as Donahue walked among the studio crowd while anchoring the show. It became a hit, was launched into syndication and moved production to Chicago in 1974, then eventually to New York. It ended in 1996. Donahue married actress Marlo Thomas in the late 1970s.

Alan Colmes Among Hall of Fame Legends Inductees

The Museum of Broadcast Communications announces the selection of eight new Legends inductees into the Radio Hall of Fame for 2024, recognizing the talents and efforts of on-air personalities, programmers andim operators who contributed with greatness to the radio industry and have since passed away. The eight radio legends take their place in the Radio Hall of Fame immediately are: Chuck Blore – On-Air Personality; Alan Colmes – On-Air Personality; Charlie Douglas – On-Air Personality; Jim Ladd – On-Air Personality; Maria Martin – Journalist; Byron McGregor – On-Air Personality; Percy Sutton – Executive; and Rusty Walker – Programming Executive and On-Air Personality. The Radio Hall of Fame will recognize its 2024 class of inductees at the 2024 Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony on September 19, at the Omni Nashville in Nashville.

— Write a stack of Tweets for each episode, and post at intervals, so you’re not further-down readers’ feeds then they are scrolling.

— Use # and @ to attract those with affinity to your subject and/or guest.

4 reasons why:

— Relentless negativity gets old quickly. We all know, and seek to avoid, someone whose glass is ALWAYS half-empty. Don’t be him or her.

— Bellicose braggadocio gets old even quicker. And “I,” “I,” “I,” “me,” “me,” “me” emulates an unfortunate talk radio caricature podcasters want to avoid.

— Millennials – heavy podcast consumers — are repelled by acrimony and seek consensus.

— Once it’s out there, you can’t take it back… even if you delete-the-Tweet. The Library of Congress archives all Tweets, and they’re not the only ones. Those who don’t wish you well may have screen-grabbed what you posted… something politicians learn the hard way when their words show up on opponents’ campaign commercials. And we’ve all read radio trade press reports of DJs and talkers who’ve been fired for social media faux pas.

Judge Approves Audacy’s Extension Request For D-I-P Loans

AudacyEarlier this week (8/14), TALKERS reported the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas Houston Division approved Audacy’s prepackaged plan for reorganization under Chapter 11 on February 20 (2024). The company was awaiting the FCC’s blessing on the plan to complete reorganization and its Debtor-in-Possession credit facility in the aggregate principal amount of $32 million, maturing next Monday (8/19). Audacy asked the Court to extend the maturation date to September 30, 2024. After a 1:00 pm (CT) hearing yesterday (8/15), U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez – as expected – approved an emergency motion allowing Audacy to extend its pause on certain financial obligations beyond the original deadline. Audacy stated in its second quarter 2024 financial report that it expects to receive FCC approval in the third quarter of this year.

SiriusXM’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention will begin next Monday (8/19) at 7:00 am (ET) with Zerlina Maxwell’s “Mornings with Zerlina” on Progress (channel 127). Throughout the week she’ll interview politicians and experts, as well as provide her analysis of the previous night’s key moments. Another Progress host, Michelangelo Signorile, will walk throughout Chicago’s United Center, interviewing politicians; spokespeople; and experts. “Tell Me Everything” host John Fugelsang (9:00 am – 12:00 noon, ET) will anchor primetime coverage onsite. Meanwhile, SiriusXM POTUS (channel 124) hosts Steve Scully and Julie Mason will do their shows live from Chicago all week. Among others, Mason’s early confirmed guests include Colorado Senator Michael Bennet; Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell; Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley; and Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz. NPR Readies Democratic National Convention Plans

NPRNPR and participating member stations will begin coverage of the Democratic National Convention from Chicago next Monday and Tuesday (8/19, 8/20, 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm, ET). Scott Detrow’s recap of the day’s major events will feature insights from NPR correspondents, as well as interviews with newsmakers attending the convention. NPR’s coverage will continue Wednesday and Thursday (8/21, 8/22) beginning at 9:00 pm ET. “Law & Order” To Debut True Crime Podcast Series

Law and OrderA collaboration among iHeartPodcasts, Universal Television, and Wolf Entertainment, unscripted “Law & Order: Criminal Justice System” is scheduled to premiere next Thursday (8/22). It marks the first venture into investigative journalism for the “Law & Order” franchise. iHeartPodcasts president Will Pearson tells TALKERS, “Listener interest in true crime continues to flourish with new stories constantly being sought out across platforms. ‘Law & Order’ is a legendary series. It’s an honor to team up with UTV, Wolf Entertainment, and executive producer Elliot Wolf to develop this original slate of podcasts.” Wolf Entertainment’s EVP/digital Elliot Wolf is co-creator of the upcoming Amazon Prime series “On Call.” He comments, “We’re thrilled to join forces with iHeartPodcasts and UTV to bring the real stories that have shaped our criminal justice system, the bedrock of the ‘Law & Order’ brand, to life. Cumulus Media promotes Carolyn Chauncey to SVP, marketing and podcasting. In this new role, she’ll lead the Cumulus Podcast Network’s day-to-day operations, content acquisition, editorial, and production. WWO: AM/FM Ads Outperform Social Media Ads

In this week’s Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group blog post, a number of studies measuring attentiveness (defined as the degree to which those exposed to the advertising are focused on it)im reveal that AM/FM ads far outperform most social media ads. For example, the firm Adelaide found that for revery $1,000 spent on AM/FM ads it would require spending $2,635 on Facebook ads for the same amount of attentiveness. However, it also found that just $698 of YouTube ads would yield the same degree of attentiveness as $1,000 of AM/FM advertising. BFoA Teams with VHI for Voice Care Info

The Broadcasters Foundation of America is teaming up with Dr. Steven M. Zeitels from the patient nonprofit Voice Health Institute (VHI) to offer broadcast industry professionals information about laryngeal and voice care. VHI is a 501(C)3 charity, focused on helping individuals with laryngeal voice and airway care across the country. Dr. Zeitels is the professor of Laryngeal Surgery at Harvard Medical School and theim Director of Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation (MGH Voice Center). Dr. Zeitels says, “The Broadcasters Foundation has done amazing work over many years. I am impressed with their transparency and their commitment to providing aid to broadcast industry individuals in dire need. I am pleased that VHI will partner with the Foundation to help educate broadcasters throughout the US about voice problems they may be experiencing.” Through the efforts of Dr. Zeitels, Julie Andrews (the iconic actress who lost her singing voice) joined VHI at its incorporation as its Honorary Chairwoman. Dr. Zeitels is her current physician and surgeon. Since then, legendary vocalists Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Roger Daltrey of The Who, Lionel Richie, and Keith Urban as well as broadcasters such as Joe Buck and Dick Vitale have provided invaluable support to the VHI to forward its mission.
