Andrew Wilkow Raises $166,000 for Veterans

Salem Media Group announces that talk personality Andrew Wilkow raised $166,568 for a variety of veterans-related charities with his annual “Close Air Support” fundraiser via the combined resources ofim his Salem News Channel TV show and SiriusXM radio show.  Wilkow says, “The charities our team works with are low to no overhead organizations where every dollar donated goes directly to the cause of veterans from suicide prevention, to getting homeless veterans off the streets, to providing PTSD therapy dogs. Salem Washington DC Reports from “March for Israel” Rally

Media coverage of Tuesday’s “March for Israel” event at the National Mall included Salem Mediaim Group’s general manager for Christian talk WAVA-FM, Washington, DC Chuck Olmstead. Olmstead tells TALKERS, “It was an amazing day to be at that at that gathering. I met some amazing people. One Jewish woman I interviewed has a home in Bethesda, MD as well as a home in Israel. She was at her home in Israel on 10/7 and continued to stay in Israel but came back for the rally. She was articulate and had a great story to tell. It is interviews like that, that are hard to distill down to sound bites.”

Salem Media Group Third Quarter Revenue Falls 5%

The company releases its third quarter 2023 operating results and reports total revenue of $63.5 million, a decline of 5% from the same period in 2022. Salem reports that total operating expenses for the quarter increased 31.9% to $99.8 million, while operating expenses, excluding stock-basedim compensation expense, debt modification costs, gains and losses on the sale or disposition of assets, impairments, depreciation expense and amortization expense increased 0.2% to $61.0 million. The company reports a net loss of $31.3 million for the quarter, an increase of 163% over the same period in 2022. Salem presents operating results by segment and reveals that its Broadcast segment’s revenue was $49 million, down 4.2% year-over-year; its Digital Media segment’s revenue was $10 million, down 2.2%; and the Publishing segment’s revenue was $4.6 million, a decline of 17.5%.

Beasley Receives Non-Compliance Notice from Nasdaq

On Friday (10/13), Beasley Broadcast Group received a delisting warning from Nasdaq because its Class A common stock had traded at less than $1 for the past 30 business days.  There’s no immediate effect on the BBGI stock as it has a “cure period” that gives it until April 10, 2024 to trade for at least a dollar per share for 10 consecutive business days. Even if that doesn’t happen, Beasley could getim another 180-calendar day compliance period if it moves its stock to the Nasdaq Capital Market and satisfies other certain requirements. Beasley is the fourth audio company to face delisting this year. Audacy received notice from the New York Stock Exchange and in June engineered a 1-for-30 reverse stock split. Its stock closed at 35 cents per share on Monday (10/16). Salem Media Group received a delisting notice from Nasdaq in June giving it 180 days to rise above the $1 threshold. It closed at 68 cents per share on Monday (10/16). Urban One also received a delisting notice from Nasdaq but not for its share price. That company is late with quarterly reports due to independent accounting issues.

The Republican National Committee selects NBC News, Salem Radio Network, the Republican Jewish Coalition, and Rumble as media partners for the third Republican presidential primary debate at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on November 8. Salem Radio Network talk host Mike Gallagher began yesterday’s program launching an emergency campaign raising funds for Israeli victims through the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. Gallagher’s campaign is also being highlighted on other Salem Media Group platforms including SRN News, TOWNHALL.com, and several local morning shows including Mark Davis’ program on KSKY, Dallas and Joey Hudson’s show on WGTK-FM in Greenville, South Carolina as well as TOWNHALL News.

According to an article in the New York Post (10/7) by reporter Brooke Kato, scientists have unsheathed an electrifying new treatment for erectile dysfunction that’s possibly better than popping a little blue pill — AM radio waves!  New research published in the International Journal of Impotence Research suggested that self-administered, low-intensity radio frequency zaps to the penis could be effective for ED treatment due to anatomical and physiological changes in the penile tissue. When used at lower frequencies, the radio waves create heat, due to the interaction between molecules and ions, triggering “structural changes” and the creation of collagen and elastic fibers, according to study author Dr. Ilan Gruenwald. Salem to Sell Church Products Business for $30 Million

Salem Media Group announces that it has entered into an agreement with Gloo LLC to sell its Salem Church Products business for $30 million. Salem says that when the transaction closes, scheduled for November 1, the parties will also enter into a $10 million multi-year agreement for Salem to advertise the Gloo platform’s products and services across Salem’s radio and digital platform that serves the Christianim audience. Salem Church Products creates and distributes resources for churches and ministries in the areas of church media, worship, children’s ministry, preaching, teaching and employment through online resources including WorshipHouse Media, SermonSearch, ChurchStaffing, Children’s Ministry Deals and many others. Liz Truss Inks Book Deal with Salem’s Regnery Publishing

Salem Media Group announces that its book unit Regnery Publishing signs a deal with former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss that includes the publishing of her new book, Ten Years to Save the West, scheduled to be released on April 16, 2024. Report: Howell Not Conservative Enough for WLS-AM, Chicago

A piece by Justin Kaufmann at Axios Chicago quotes former WLS-AM afternoon talk show host Big John Howell saying the reason he’s no longer with the Cumulus Media news/talk outlet is because, “They toldim me that they intend to be the most conservative radio station in America. I just didn’t fit the bill anymore.” Although Howell doesn’t profess to be conservative or liberal, he’s been a talk host for years (in addition to his work at country outlet WUSN-FM), not only with WLS-AM but with Salem Media Group’s crosstown conservative news/talk WIND-AM. However, he’s made no bones about his contempt for former President Donald Trump. He laments to Axios, “Nobody broadcasts anymore. Everybody narrowcasts.” WLS-AM has not revealed its permanent plans for the afternoon drive daypart other than to slide the syndicated Mark Levin program into the 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm slot. Denver Talk Host Steffan Tubbs’ to Exit Salem’s KNUS in November

News and talk radio pro Steffan Tubbs announced last month that he’ll exit his 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm KNUS-AM, Denver talk show on November 3. Tubbs, who has served in Denver with iHeartMedia’s news/talk KOA as well as Salem Media Group’s KNUS, has been producing documentaries in addition to his radioim work. In a Westword profile, Tubbs talks about his ascent in the news business, his plans for the “final chapter” of his working life, and his current film project about the deadly drug fentanyl. Locally, Tubbs has caused controversy with his 2020 documentary, Denver in Decay. About that film, Tubbs tells Westword, “That documentary kind of put me on the map as being one of the most hated media members by local politicians in Colorado in recent memory, and I embrace that. But with all the hate and praise, the one thing no one has ever said is that Denver in Decay is inaccurate. Salem Media Group Second Quarter Revenue Declines 4.2%

Salem Media Group total revenue for the second quarter of 2023 was $65.8 million, a decrease of 4.2% from Q2 of 2022. The company reports an operating loss of $4.1 million compared to operating income of $7.3 million reported in Q2 of 2022. Salem posts a net loss of $7.1 million for the second quarter of this year, compared to a net income of $9.1 million reported for Q2 of 2022. Looking at the company’s operating results by segment, Netim Broadcast revenue decreased 5.3% to $49.7 million from $52.5 million; Station Operating Income decreased 43.5% to $6.2 million from $10.9 million; Same Station net broadcast revenue decreased 5.8% to $49.4 million from $52.4 million; and Same Station operating income decreased 37.7% to $6.8 million from $10.9 million. Digital Media revenue increased 0.5% to $10.9 million from $10.8 million, and Publishing revenue decreased 3.5% to $5.2 million from $5.4 million. Salem reports that as of June 30, 2023, the company was not in compliance with its fixed charge coverage ratio. On August 7, 2023 it signed a forbearance whereby the bank agreed not to exercise remedies on the default during the month of August. Additionally, the notional amount of the revolver was reduced from $30 million to $25 million with a minimum availability of $1 million. The interest rate associated with the revolver increased by two percentage points effective July 1, 2023 through the date of the forbearance amendment.

Salem Announces Five Market Managers Doing Double Duty

Salem Media Group makes changes to its management structure in five markets as market managers currently leading other markets will now also oversee a new, additional market. The company says, “These changes provide some cost savings and will allow Salem’s most seasoned leaders to expand their impact on the performance of the company.” Terry Fahy, regional VP/GM for Los Angeles will now also oversee Oxnard; Steve Brodsky, GM for San Diego, will also manage Honolulu; Dennis Hayes, GM for Portland, will now overseeim Seattle as well; Kevin Isaacs, GM for Cleveland, will now also manage Pittsburgh; and Mark Durkin, regional VP/GM for Sacramento, will also manage Phoenix. This comes months after Carolyn Cassidy was assigned both Tampa and Columbus and John Gallagher began leading Chicago and Little Rock. Salem Co-Founder Stu Epperson Passes at 86

Salem Media Group co-founder Stuart Epperson has died at 86. The company says that Epperson, along with his brother-in-law Edward Atsinger, founded Salem Communications (now Salem Media Group) in 1986 and expanded Salem’s influence with Christian andim politically conservative news/talk formatted radio stations and media assets nationwide. Epperson was a longtime leader in Christian radio as a former member of the board of directors of the National Religious Broadcasters Association. In 2005, Time Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America. Salem executive chairman Ed Atsinger comments, “Stuart will be greatly missed by many. I will miss him, but I take comfort in realizing that he is already receiving his reward for a life well-lived. A life that personifies the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7-8: ‘I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. Now there Is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.’”
