WWO: News/Talk & Sports Make Up 28% of Streaming Audience

This week’s blog from Cumulus Media | Westwood One’s Audio Active Group analyzes data from Edison Research’s ongoing Share of Ear study to determine what advertisers should consider for animg ad-supported media campaign. Among the findings is that in order to ensure that digital audio buys are effective, marketers should commit news/talk and sports stations because they represent 28% of all 25-54 AM/FM radio streaming audiences. Among 25-54s, spoken-word formats have a massive 28% streaming share, 2.4 times larger than the overall spoken word share of 12%. The news/talk format has a 6.7% share of total AM/FM radio listening. The streaming share for news/talk is 15.4% — more than double its total share. The sports format has a 12.5 share of the streaming audience, 2.5 times bigger than its overall 5 share. Further, the data indicates that for the 18-34 demographic, sports and news/talk streaming is a combined 19.6% share. See the full blog post here.

Podcast Presents 18-Part Series “The Journey Beyond Death”

“The Outer Limits of Inner Truth,” hosted by Ryan McCormick, announces the release of an 18-part series “that offers one of the most in-depth, compassionate, and thought-provoking explorations of death and the afterlife ever produced in modern media,” titled, “The Journey Beyond Death.” McCormick says the podcast series spans 65img original interviews, including 28 with individuals who have had near-death experiences (NDEs). Salem Media Group Q1 Revenue Falls 12%

Salem Media Group’s first quarter 2025 net revenue was $39.8 million, a decrease of 12% from theimg same period in 2024. The company reports that net broadcast revenue was $39.8 million, down 13.6% from Q1 in 2024, and digital media revenue also fell to $10.2 million, a decline of about 4.5%. Salem’s net loss for the quarter was $7.1 million compared to the net loss of $5.1 million it reported in Q1 of 2024.

Urban One Net Revenue Falls 11.7%

Urban One reports operating results for the first quarter of 2025 and reveals net revenue was $92.2 million, a decline of 11.7% from the same period in 2024. Broadcast and digital operating income was approximately $23 million, a decrease of 28.1% Q1 of 2024. The company reports a net loss of approximately $11.7 million compared to the net income of $7.5 million it reported a year ago. Urban One CEO and president Alfred C. Liggins, III says, “First quarter results were broadly in line withimg expectations: core radio advertising finished at -12.4% excluding digital, and Cable TV advertising was -6.3%. Our cable TV ratings stabilized significantly in the first quarter of 2025 and are performing in line with our 2025 budget. Second quarter core radio advertising pacings have weakened over the past several weeks and are now -8.7%. Our first quarter 2025 digital revenues were down 16.1% driven by expected weakness in streaming and podcasting revenues. Based on our year-to-date performance, we reaffirm our full year guidance of $75 million in Adjusted EBITDA. Our cumulative debt repurchases so far in 2025 are $88.6 million at an average price of 53.9%, resulting in reduced gross debt of $495.9 million, and we currently have approximately $79.8 million of cash on hand. In a challenging marketplace, our focus remains on controlling costs, managing leverage and retaining a strong liquidity position.”

iHeartMedia Q1 Revenue Rises 1%

iHeartMedia reports consolidated revenue of $807 million in the first quarter of 2025, up 1% from the same period in 2024. iHeartMedia reports its operating results in segments and says Digital Audio revenue increased $38.3 million, or 16%, driven primarily by continuing increases in demand for digital advertising, including podcast advertising. Multiplatform Group revenue – which includes radio stationimg and networks revenue – decreased $20.5 million, or 4.2%, primarily resulting from a decrease in broadcast advertising in connection with continued uncertain market conditions. iHeartMedia chairman and CEO Bob Pittman says, “We are pleased with our Q1 results given the uncertain environment in which we are operating now, and we think these results demonstrate the resilience and relevance of our products and the tremendous growth opportunity we have with our podcast business in particular.” Company president, COO and CFO Rich Bressler adds, “In the first quarter, we generated Adjusted EBITDA of $105 million, flat to prior year, consistent with our previously provided guidance, and our consolidated revenues for the quarter were up 1% compared to the prior-year quarter, above our guidance of down low-single digits, driven by the Digital Audio Group revenues and Adjusted EBITDA growth of 16% and 28% respectively.”

Townsquare Media Q1 Net Revenue Dips 0.5%

Reporting its operating results for the first quarter of 2025, Townsquare Media says net revenue for the period was $98.7 million, a decline of 0.5% from the same period in 2024. Townsquare breaks its report into segments and it’s worth noting that Broadcast Advertising net revenue was $41.3 million, a decrease of 9.1% from the same period in 2024, while Digital Advertising net revenue increased 7.6%,img and Subscription Digital Marketing Solutions net revenue increased 4.2%. Townsquare CEO Bill Wilson says, “I am pleased to share that Townsquare’s first quarter results met or exceeded our previously issued guidance, driven by imgthe continued strength of our differentiated digital platform. Additionally, this morning we are reaffirming our 2025 full-year guidance for both net revenue and Adjusted EBITDA. In the first quarter, net revenue decreased – 0.5% year-over-year excluding political, and -1.0% in total, meeting our guidance, and Adjusted EBITDA increased +6.2% year-over-year excluding political, and +3.5% in total, exceeding our guidance. In addition, net income declined $3.1 million year-over-year. Digital is and will continue to be Townsquare’s growth engine, and we believe Townsquare’s ability to drive profitable, sustainable digital growth is a key differentiator for our company, and consistent with our strategy of being a Digital First Local Media Company principally focused on markets outside the Top 50 in the U.S.”

Beasley Broadcast Group Q1 Revenue Down 10.1%

Beasley Broadcast Group, parent company of Beasley Media Group, reports its operating results for the first quarter of 2025 and reveals net revenue of $48.9 million, a decline of 10.1% from the same period in 2024. The company reports a net loss for the quarter of $2.7 million compared to Q1 of 2024 in which it reported neither a loss nor income due to a $6 million gain on the sale of its BMIimg investment. Other notes from the first quarter include: Revenue from new business accounted for 18% of net revenue; Local revenue, including digital packages sold locally, accounted for 71% of net revenue; Digital revenue was comparable to the first quarter of 2024 but increased 6% year-over-year to $10.8 million, on a same-station basis; Digital revenue accounted for 22% of net revenue; and Digital segment operating margin was 18%. Beasley CEO Caroline Beasley says, “Our first quarter results imgreflect the strength of our ongoing transformation and the resilience of our core strategy. While revenue was impacted by persistent macroeconomic headwinds, we mitigated this through disciplined cost management, operational streamlining, and continued momentum in our digital business, resulting in an Operating Loss of $2.0 million and year-over-year Adjusted EBITDA growth. Digital revenue now represents over 20% of total revenue, and the meaningful expansion in digital segment operating income underscores the scalability of our platform and the impact of our strategic investments. Civic Media Wins 38 WBA Awards

Civic Media, operator of 11 news/talk/sports stations (plus a number of music stations) around the state of Wisconsin, is winner of 38 awards from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association that wereimg given out at the recent 2025 Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Awards Gala. Civic Media stations received 11 first place awards, 15 second place awards, and 12 third place awards. Civic Media CEO Sage Weil says, “I couldn’t be more proud of our team’s performance this year, and their ongoing dedication to serving our audiences around the state. We believe that local media plays a critical role in our communities, and it is always great to see the WBA recognizing the quality work being done around Wisconsin, both by Civic Media and the many other excellent organizations.”

WABC Host Frank Morano Wins NYC Council Seat; 2025 Primary Election is Next Month

WABC, New York overnight host Frank Morano beat out Cliff Hagen and Griffin Fossella to assume the Staten Island South Shore city council seat vacated by Joe Borelli in January. Now, Morano willimg hold the seat through the end of the year. However, he faces a June primary and, if successful, then a November general election to remain in office into 2026. Morano tells TALKERS, “We have another election in June, but I’m hoping to stay on the radio, whether it’s in my current time slot or another. I’m determined to stay on radio, even while doing the people’s work.”

Edison Research Releases Q1 Top Podcasts Data

Edison Research releases its Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. based on reach for Q1 2025 among weekly podcast listeners ages 13+. The list ranks podcasts based on total audience reach from Edisonimg Podcast Metrics. The top six podcasts are unchanged in rank from the previous chart from Edison with “The Joe Rogan Experience” at #1, followed by “Crime Junkie” at #2, and “The Daily” at #3. SiriusXM Q1 Revenue Falls 4%

Reporting its operating results from the first quarter of 2025, SiriusXM reveals revenue of $2.07 billion, a decrease of 4% from the same period in 2024. The company reports net income of $204 million. SiriusXM self-pay subscribers decreased by approximately 303,000, a 16% improvement compared toimg the same period last year. Self-pay monthly churn was 1.6%, compared to 1.7% in the first quarter of 2024. The company ended the quarter with approximately 33 million total subscribers. In a conference call with investors, imgCEO Jennifer Witz said the company is re-focusing on in-car listening after its less-than-successful attempt to become a leader in streaming content. She says, “We entered 2025 focused on what we do best: delivering standout experiences to our core subscribers, curating compelling content, strengthening our advertising business, and enhancing the value of our service. Today, we’re operating with greater discipline, improving execution across the board, and reallocating capital toward the areas where we see the greatest impact. We’re building a more focused, more efficient SiriusXM — aligned around what matters most to our listeners and our business — and I’m pleased with how we’ve started the year.”

Cumulus Media Q1 Revenue Falls 6.4%

Cumulus Media reports its operating results for the first quarter of 2025 and says net revenue was $187.3 million, a decline of 6.4% from the same period in 2024. The company’s net loss increased to $32.4 million compared to the net loss of $14.2 million it reported in Q1 of 2024. Cumulus presidentimg and CEO Mary Berner says, “For the first quarter, we delivered revenue in line with pacing guidance despite worsening economic headwinds reflecting, among other things, the imposition of tariffs that have depressed both imgconsumer and advertiser sentiment. However, with that backdrop, what remains constant is our relentless focus on actions to mitigate the impacts of the macro environment. For example, we accelerated growth in our digital marketing services business, which was up 30% for the quarter; leveraged our entire platform to capture demand opportunities; and drove additional annualized cost reductions of $7.5 million. Moving forward, we will continue to execute these strategies while simultaneously working to fundamentally transform the way we use and leverage our key assets.”

Changes Coming to “97.1 The Fan” in Columbus

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Tegna’s sports talk WBNS-FM, Columbus “97.1 The Fan” will be seeing some programming changes soon. The longtime afternoon drive show “Common Man & T-Bone,” starring Mikeimg Ricordati and Jonathan Smith, will be split up with Smith moving to mornings alongside Tyvis Powell. The current morning show, “Morning Juice,” hosted by Brandon Beam and Bobby Carpenter is going away with Beam moving to the evening “Buckeye Show” and Carpenter going to the digital side for a 6:00 am to 8:00 am streaming show. Former ESPN Announcer Mike Patrick Dies at 80

Longtime ESPN play-by-play personality Mike Patrick died of natural causes on Sunday (4/20) at the age of 80. Patrick spent 36 years as a play-by-play commentator for ESPN. He also served as ESPN’s NFL voice for “Sunday Night Football” for 18 seasons. His final game behind the mic was the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, on December 30, 2017.

IAB Report Dives into 2024 Digital Advertising Data

IAB just released its Internet Advertising Revenue Report for 2024 and the results of the study indicate the digital advertising industry saw ad revenue climb to $259 billion, a 15% year-over-year increase from 2023. IAB says, “This record growth reflects the industry’s ability to adapt to evolving technologies, regulatory changes, and shifting consumer behaviors. In parallel, the streaming landscape continues to shift, with ad-supported streaming becoming dominant and live sports driving premium ad investments.” Other takeaways from the study including that Digital Video is the fastest-growing format, with revenueimg increasing 19.2% YoY to $62.1 billion, now accounting for 24% of total ad revenue, and that Podcast advertising revenues show a strong YoY growth of 26.4%, a significant acceleration from 5.5% last year. IAB adds, “This growth was fueled by shifting consumer media habits, with cord-cutting driving greater engagement with on-demand audio, and podcasts emerging as a key platform for political advertisers seeking to connect with voters ahead of the election.” Overall, digital audio – including podcasting – has continued to grow, earning $7.6 billion in revenue with an 8.5% YoY growth from FY23 which is a slowdown in growth compared to last year’s 18.9% rate. Podcasting however saw a surge in growth at 26.4%, while other related formats such as Streaming Music and Radio stifled overall Audio growth. IAB concludes, “As audio consumption trends rise our data suggests that there will be continued digital audio advertising expansion and growth in the year ahead as brands and platforms invest more in podcasts, streaming music, and voice-based advertising.” See more about the study here.

SRN Offers Special Show on First 100 Days of Trump Administration

Salem Radio Network is producing a one-hour special show for affiliates on the first 100 days of the Trumpimg administration that will air on Tuesday, April 29. It will take the place of the third hour of the Larry Elder show at 8:00 pm ET. “The 100 Days of Trump” is being hosted by Larry Elder with co-host Chris Stigall – host of SRN’s morning show – as the two will interview White House officials, cabinet members, members of congress, plus other Salem hosts.

Edison Research: Women Podcast Listeners Triples in 10 Years

According to data from Edison Research, female monthly podcast listenership has tripled over the past decade, growing from 15% in 2015 to 45% in 2025. This is from Edison’s “Women’s Audio Report: Women & Podcasts” with support from SiriusXM Media. The report finds that when factoring in video podcast viewership, estimates for engagement by women climbs even higher, to 52% of women age 18+ nowimg consuming podcasts in some form. Other notable findings from the report: 1) Female podcast consumers skew younger (39% between ages 18-34), have higher incomes (29% with household incomes over $100K), and higher education levels (51% with college degrees); 2) Primary motivations among women monthly podcast consumers include exploring topics in depth (53%), learning (46%), and entertainment (44%); and 3) Among the women monthly consumers who have heard an ad on a podcast, 75% have acted as a result of hearing an ad. KILT-AM, Houston’s Clint Stoerner in Arkansas Sports HoF

Houston sports talk personality and former University of Arkansas star quarterback Clint Stoerner was inducted into Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame on April 11 during their 67th annual induction banquet at theimg Oaklawn Event Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Stoerner co-hosts “The Drive with Clint Stoerner and Ron Hughley” in afternoon drive at Audacy’s sports talk KILT-AM, Houston “SportsRadio 610.” Audacy Houston SVP and market manager Sarah Frazier comments, “We are so proud of Clint and his accomplishments both on and off the field. NAB Files 80 Pages of Comments for FCC Deregulation

The National Association of Broadcasters says it filed comprehensive comments with the Federal Communications Commission in response to the agency’s call for public input under its “Delete, Delete, Delete” initiative. NAB says its filing “urges the FCC to seize this moment to fundamentally modernize itsimg regulatory framework, beginning with long-overdue reforms to the national television ownership cap and the local radio and TV ownership rules. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt states, “This is a moment for bold ideas, and NAB is proud to lead the charge. The FCC’s rules should reflect today’s media landscape, not one from decades past. Our filing lays out a clear, actionable path to modernize regulations and empower local radio and TV stations to better serve their communities. We appreciate the Commission, especially Chairman Carr, for launching this important effort.
