Change of Corporate Officers at iHeartMedia. In an 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, iHeartMedia states that it has transitioned Scott Hamilton from his role as the its principal accounting officer to a consulting arrangement. Michael B. McGuinness, the company’s executive vice president, deputy chief financial officer, is designated as the company’s principal accounting officer. iHeartMedia states, “Mr. Hamilton’s change in status is not the result of any dispute or disagreement with the company, including with respect to any matters relating to the company’s accounting practices or financial reporting.”

SiriusXM Announces U.S. Open Coverage. SiriusXM is the exclusive national audio broadcaster for the 125th U.S. Open Championship, and will offer live shot-by-shot coverage across all four days of Championship play – June 12-15 – from Oakmont Country Club, outside Pittsburgh. The broadcast team will feature Taylor Zarzour and Brian Katrek as the play-by-play voices, alongside analysts Steve Melnyk and Brendon de Jonge. Three-time U.S. Open Champion Hale Irwin will join the SiriusXM team on air to provide analysis during the Saturday and Sunday rounds.

Podtrac releases its Top Podcasts chart for May based on U.S. unique monthly audience and NPR’s “NPR News Now” remains ranked #1, followed by The New York Times’ “The Daily” at #2 and NPR’s “Up First” atimg #3. Premiere Launches “Comedy Saved Me”. Premiere Networks and Buzz Knight announce the launch of a new podcast, “Comedy Saved Me,” hosted by TV and radio pro Lynn Hoffman. In each episode, Hoffman sits down with comedians, entertainers, and cultural voices to share personal, powerful stories about how comedy changed their lives, and sometimes even saved them.

Jones Joins WNYC/Gothamist. Journalist Gabrielle Jones joins the local news team at WNYC/Gothamist as the director of digital news and audience. The public media organization says Jones will work with the newsroom, live radio shows, and across New York Public Radio to grow audiences on WNYC’s local news website Gothamist, the WNYC app, their newsletters and social media.

Radio CEOs Speak with Chachi. Benztown president Dave “Chachi” Denes interviews two group heads on his podcast, “Chachi Loves Everybody.” The most recent edition of his podcast series features Saga Communications president and CEO Chris Forgy and Meruelo Media president and CEO Otto Padron.

Florida’s Voice Radio Adds Affiliates. Conservative talk host Drew Steele’s “Florida’s Voice Radio” program adds new affiliates as WDBO, Orlando; WOKV, Jacksonville; and WROD, Daytona Beach add the program to their lineups. Steele says, “I’m thrilled to join the lineups of WDBO, WOKV, and WROD. Florida has some of the most passionate and engaged listeners anywhere, and I can’t wait to connect with them and be part of what matters to these communities.”

Stefanik Makes News on Sid & Friends. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said on the “Sid & Friends” morning show on WABC, New York that she is considering a gubernatorial run. Politico reports that Stefanik said to Sid Rosenberg, “We need to save New York, and I’m taking a very strong look. I’m going to make a decision in the coming months.”

“The Breakfast Club” Hits Download Milestone. iHeartMedia and The Black Effect Podcast Network celebrate “The Breakfast Club” podcast surpassing one billion downloads. The show was launched in 2010 on iHeartMedia New York’s “Power 105.1” and the company says it “quickly became a must-stop destination for musicians, entertainers, politicians and the most talked about cultural figures of the moment. Since then, it has amassed a dedicated following captivated by the honest opinions and cultural breakdowns from current hosts DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious and Charlamagne Tha God.”

Jeffery Warshaw Sues Soros Fund Management for Breach of Contract

Connoisseur Media CEO Jeffrey Warshaw is suing Soros Fund Management for breach of contract, unfair trade practices and more in Connecticut Superior Court. In the complaint, Warshaw alleges that he had a deal with Soros Fund Management’s Michael Del Nin in 2022 and began working together “to try to acquireimg Cox Radio, with Del Nin agreeing that Warshaw would manage the business as CEO upon successful acquisition.” While both parties were doing due diligence on the CMG deal, Warshaw learned that an Audacy majority stake holder was willing to sell its stake in the company. Warshaw says he steered SFM and Del Nin to the deal that made SFM a majority stake holder of the new Audacy in early 2024. Warshaw alleges he was promised he’d be the next CEO of Audacy or that he would get 5% of SFM’s profits from the Audacy acquisition. After that though, Warshaw says Del Nin balked and denied there was ever an agreement, calling any such claims “fabricated.” Warshaw is seeking compensatory and punitive damages and asking that the court award specific performance of their agreement.

iHeartMedia Launches “True Crime Tonight.” iHeartMedia announces the premiere of “True Crime Tonight” in collaboration with KT Studios. “True Crime Tonight” will initially launch on more than 20 broadcast radio stations across the country Sunday through Thursday evenings live at 10:00 pm local time beginning June 1. The two-hour show is being led by Stephanie Lydecker, founder and CEO of KT Studios; Courtney McKenna Armstrong, producer and voice of KT Studios’ podcasts; and Baudi Moovan, crime analyst and star of Netflix’s “Don’t F*** with Cats.”

Edison Unveils Infinite Dial UK. At The Podcast Show in London, Edison Research released its finding about UK digital media consumption via it’s the Infinite Dial UK 2025. The study looked at tech ownership, social media usage, online audio, and podcast listening in the UK.

Podcast One Acquires New Shows. PodcastOne announces it broadens its programming slate by adding several new and acquired podcasts to its network. Acquisitions include “Love Murder,” “The Broadside” and “Intrusive Thoughts” by Adam Rippon, with new podcasts “Yestergays” with Justin Sylvester and Blakely Thornton and “A Lot of You Have Been Asking” from comedian Hayden Cohen.

“The Financial Exchange” Joins SiriusXM.  “The Financial Exchange with Michael Armstrong and Chuck Zodda” – heard on 14 stations across New England including flagship WRKO, Boston – will begin airing on SiriusXM’s Business Radio channel on June 2 from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon ET. Money Matters Radio COO Jason Wolfe comments, “In a world where listeners have numerous ways to consume the content they love the most, adding an incredible brand like SiriusXM will help us expand our reach to a new audience that we’re excited to be a part of. We can’t wait to get started.”

WTOP Adds “Bloomberg Business of Entertainment.” Bloomberg Audio’s “Bloomberg Business of Entertainment” is being added to the program schedule at Hubbard Radio’s all-news WTOP-FM, Washington, DC. Bloomberg says the 60-second radio report “takes listeners behind the scenes of the entertainment industry’s biggest stories. The micro-feature provides captivating snippets of the entertainment industry’s most compelling stories of the day and is tailor-made for stations of virtually all formats and market sizes.”

Froney Joins FOX Weather. FOX News Media’s FOX Weather brings Bayne Froney aboard as an on-airimg meteorologist. Froney most recently served with WLEX-TV, Lexington, Kentucky. She comments, “I’m looking forward to working with the talented group of meteorologists at FOX Weather. I can’t wait to continue exploring my fascination with meteorology and work with some of the best in the industry.”

NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series Presented by Westwood One. Cumulus Media’s Westwood One is distributing the NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series to stations across the country live from USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Coverage starts today (5/29). The broadcast crews for the double elimination games will feature Ryan Radtke and Chris Plank as play-by-play announcers, along with former University of Oklahoma outfielder and two-time WCWS champion Erin Miller, and Hall of Famer and University of Arizona three-time WCWS champion Leah (O’Brien) Amico as analysts.

New Affiliates for “America Tonight.” The nationally syndicated show “America Tonight” starring Kate Delaney adds two new affiliate stations as WORD, Daytona Beach and KLIS, St. Louis both add the program to their lineups. Delaney tells TALKERS magazine that she is celebrating 16 years of hosting “America Tonight.”

Townsquare Officers to Present at Investor Conferences. Townsquare Media’s CEO Bill Wilson, CFO Stuart Rosenstein, and EVP investor relations Claire Yenicay are participating in two upcoming investor conferences – the Barrington Research Virtual Spring Investment Conference on May 29 and the Noble Capital Markets’ Virtual Investor Conference on June 4.

Saga Declares Dividend. Saga Communications’ board of directors is declaring a quarterly cash dividend of $0.25 per share to be paid on June 27, 2025, to shareholders of record on June 6, 2025. The aggregate amount of the payment to be made in connection with the quarterly dividend will be approximately $1.6 million. The quarterly dividend will be funded by cash on the company’s balance sheet. Including this dividend, the company will have paid over $138 million in dividends to shareholders since the first special dividend was paid in 2012.

imgDozens of brand-new audio hardware and software companies have been launched during the past 20 years. These start-ups are usually funded by venture capital money. VC money is not invested to return a profit, it’s poured in to – pour it in. Their money is “different” than the cashflow that fuels your business. Start-up money buys time to profit.

Amazon lost money its first 10 years. Spotify launched in 2008 and turned a full year profit for the first time – last year.

MOST venture-backed start-ups do not make it to profit, they close.

With virtually unlimited funds and no deadlines, what are the strategic markers for success of most fresh, new audio businesses? Having performed due diligence for many start-ups, this is an informed summary of their goals:

— Significant distribution of the product.
— Robust, broad-appeal content offerings
— Proven metrics for securing advertising dollars
— Positive cultural impact
— Embraced by late-stage adopters
— Advertiser credibility

Hold radio to the above checklist.  92% of the population has a radio – more households than own a TV. Radio’s distribution is elegant, wireless, and free. Streaming? Yes, radio has streamed to the car since 1938. How’s UCONNECT or APPLE PLAY working in your KIA? Buffering now? Bluetooth pairing? At-home streams cost about $1,000 for a computer, $100 a month for WiFi, $150 for software upgrades and repairs. Radio distribution: turn it “ON.” No startup audio service will match radio’s distribution system.

Mature means predictable. Content offerings on radio are understood, accepted, and quickly adjusted if not appealing. Audio start-ups are rarely run by execs with audio entertainment experience. Their execs tend to be recruited from two groups: techs and discoverers. Techs because somebody has to make it work. Discoverers because you would be shocked at how many audio newcomers were funded on the wacky premise that AM/FM fails to see how badly Americans want to hear brand new music! Lurking among workers within the streaming and satellite communities is the harsh prejudice that pros with actual radio experience are satanic dinosaurs.

Most start-ups flirt with doing good for the country, ie; positive messaging, lots of jazz or world music. AM/FM has hardcore positive impact witnessed by the fact that most public radio stations enjoy ratings dominance. No other medium – none – raises more money for community charities than AM/FM.

Driving a new product past the innovators, early adopters, early majority to late majority is the path to success in any industry. AM/FM reached late majority when Bing Crosby had his own show. How’s mom doing with Spotify?

Advertiser credibility: Procter & Gamble returned to radio in the early 2000s. Last year P&G landed near the top of radio advertisers. Procter has no sense of humor or time for nonsense. If P&G buys a lot of radio, end of story. Again.

Not legacy media. Proven media.

WPG, Atlantic City, NJ iconic morning host Harry Hurley has been racking up awards in South Jersey since he was a kid. The 1975 Atlantic City High School undefeated Track & Field Team was inducted yesterday (5/19) into the Atlantic City High School Athletic Hall of Fame… exactly 50 years after they won the South Jersey championship. “The Score” to Air Select Chicago Sky Games. Audacy’s sports talk WSCR, Chicago “670 The Score” is airing select Chicago Sky games this WNBA season. All games will also stream on the Audacy app within the Chicago area. Kylen Mills will serve as play-by-play announcer and midday show host Leila Rahimi will serve as color commentator. The station will also air pregame, halftime, and postgame shows, all hosted by station contributor Alyssa Bergamini.

Sileo Returns to Tampa Airwaves. Sports media personality Dan Sileo is back on the radio airwaves in Tampa hosting the 10:00 am to 12:00 noon show on Genesis Communications’ WWBA, Largo “The Big 8.” Sileo hosts the 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm streaming program on JAKIB Sports Philadelphia.

“95.7 The Game” is Valkyries Flagship. Audacy sports talk outlet KGMZ-FM, San Francisco “95.7 The Game” is now serving as the flagship radio station for the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries. All Valkyries games will stream live on the Audacy App, and all home contests will air on “95.7 The Game.” Additionally, the Valkyries have announced that Kevin Danna will serve as the radio play-by-play announcer, with Sophia Jones as the color analyst.

Urban One Net Revenue Falls 11.7%

Urban One reports operating results for the first quarter of 2025 and reveals net revenue was $92.2 million, a decline of 11.7% from the same period in 2024. Broadcast and digital operating income was approximately $23 million, a decrease of 28.1% Q1 of 2024. The company reports a net loss of approximately $11.7 million compared to the net income of $7.5 million it reported a year ago. Urban One CEO and president Alfred C. Liggins, III says, “First quarter results were broadly in line withimg expectations: core radio advertising finished at -12.4% excluding digital, and Cable TV advertising was -6.3%. Our cable TV ratings stabilized significantly in the first quarter of 2025 and are performing in line with our 2025 budget. Second quarter core radio advertising pacings have weakened over the past several weeks and are now -8.7%. Our first quarter 2025 digital revenues were down 16.1% driven by expected weakness in streaming and podcasting revenues. Based on our year-to-date performance, we reaffirm our full year guidance of $75 million in Adjusted EBITDA. Our cumulative debt repurchases so far in 2025 are $88.6 million at an average price of 53.9%, resulting in reduced gross debt of $495.9 million, and we currently have approximately $79.8 million of cash on hand. In a challenging marketplace, our focus remains on controlling costs, managing leverage and retaining a strong liquidity position.”

Cruz Podcast Airing in Philly. The Premiere Networks-syndicated “Verdict with Ted Cruz” is airing on Audacy’s news/talk WPHT, Philadelphia. Station brand manager Greg Stocker says, “‘Verdict with Ted Cruz’ is a one-hour, no-nonsense view of the political climate from someone who knows more than most. Bringing Senator Ted Cruz and his years of knowledge and experience to WPHT ensures our audience stays informed and engaged with the political conversations shaping our country.”

The Recombobulation Area Wins Journalism Awards. The Civic Media-owned publication The Recombobulation Area wins six awards in the Milwaukee Press Club’s 2024 “Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism” competition. Since launching in 2019, The Recombobulation Area has won 19 awards from the Milwaukee Press Club, including four gold, nine silver and six bronze honors. Civic Media also owns and operates radio stations across Wisconsin, including 11 news/talk/sports outlets.

Frank Morano Leaves WABC Show

WABC, New York overnight talk host Frank Morano is leaving his hosting duties at the Red Apple Media station because of his new role as Staten Island South Shore city councilman. Morano won the seat in a special election and, due to the election schedule, faces a primary election in June and, ifimg successful there, will have a general election campaign to run in the fall for the next term. Morano issued a statement over the weekend regarding his status. He said, “When I was elected, I had expected to continue hosting my radio show until the swearing-in. However, due to concerns about equal-time rules for the upcoming election and uncertainty around what outside work I’ll be allowed to do once I take office, the decision was made that I would no longer host ‘The Other Side of Midnight’ and would step away from the Red Apple Audio Network for now. This wasn’t a decision I made lightly—or one I made at all, frankly—but I completely understand the reasoning behind it. I’m incredibly grateful to the station’s ownership and management for the opportunity to do a show I loved, with a team I respected, for an audience I adored… I do hope to be back on the radio in some form soon. But for now, I’m off the air.

KTBB, Tyler Owner Covers Conclave from Rome

Gleiser – who is not Catholic – got a client to sponsor the station’s covererage of the Conclave (see the station website here). He also filed reports for local TV station KETK-TV, Tyler. Consultant Holland Cooke works with Gleiser’s station and he says, “Just imagine the horse-laff you’d get from a big corporate owner if you proposed sending someone from even a major market station to the Conclave. When you own the station, you may… Our sponsor got umpteen promos, video and blog content, hourly radio hits on our air, and nightly reports on the local TV station where Paul does twice-weekly commentaries.”

Beasley Broadcast Group Q1 Revenue Down 10.1%

Beasley Broadcast Group, parent company of Beasley Media Group, reports its operating results for the first quarter of 2025 and reveals net revenue of $48.9 million, a decline of 10.1% from the same period in 2024. The company reports a net loss for the quarter of $2.7 million compared to Q1 of 2024 in which it reported neither a loss nor income due to a $6 million gain on the sale of its BMIimg investment. Other notes from the first quarter include: Revenue from new business accounted for 18% of net revenue; Local revenue, including digital packages sold locally, accounted for 71% of net revenue; Digital revenue was comparable to the first quarter of 2024 but increased 6% year-over-year to $10.8 million, on a same-station basis; Digital revenue accounted for 22% of net revenue; and Digital segment operating margin was 18%. Beasley CEO Caroline Beasley says, “Our first quarter results imgreflect the strength of our ongoing transformation and the resilience of our core strategy. While revenue was impacted by persistent macroeconomic headwinds, we mitigated this through disciplined cost management, operational streamlining, and continued momentum in our digital business, resulting in an Operating Loss of $2.0 million and year-over-year Adjusted EBITDA growth. Digital revenue now represents over 20% of total revenue, and the meaningful expansion in digital segment operating income underscores the scalability of our platform and the impact of our strategic investments. As we look ahead, we remain focused on unlocking margin expansion, accelerating our digital evolution, and driving long-term value for our stockholders through thoughtful execution and innovation. We are particularly encouraged by the continued growth in our high-margin digital offerings and the early success of new digital and content initiatives. WSB-AM/WSBB-FM, Atlanta-base, nationally syndicated talk host Erick Erickson is honored with the Media Research Center’s MRC Bulldog Award for Outstanding Radio Talk Show. The award is given to Erickson for “following in the footsteps of the revered Rush Limbaugh by blending humor with hard-hitting political analysis.”

“The Road to Cooperstown” Launches. A new season of the baseball podcast series “The Road to Cooperstown” has dropped on SiriusXM. Each episode of features host Jon Paul Morosi sitting down with a different Hall of Famer and the first episode features Philadelphia Phillies great Mike Schmidt.

SABO SEZ: Won’t Work on FM

img“It won’t work on FM.” Country. Country was predicted to be a failing format for the FM band. At the dawn of FM proliferation in the 1970s, the future of the band was viewed with fear and skepticism. Why wouldn’t country music work on the FM band? The conventional chatter said that “country needs to be on AM because truckers drive long distances and AM signals cover long distances. FM does not.”

According to AM management, every music and talk format that thrived on AM was going to fail on FM. Obviously, all AM genres succeeded on FM, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. The ones that succeeded quickly had common characteristics:

In the public’s mind, FM radio had specific, positive traits: Lower commercial load, cooler hosts and jocks, a subversive tone, fewer interruptions of every type. Talk on FM was absolutely going to fail. The first mother of talk hits on FM were “New Jersey 101.5” (which for decades had the largest FM talk cume in the world); WTKS-FM, Orlando; and WLUP, Chicago. GM Larry Wert, brilliant. In 1990 when those stations launched, the industry pundits ordered more drinks and pronounced their doom.

John Kobylt, of KFI, Los Angeles fame, was the first PM drive host on “New Jersey 101.5.” He explained to me the key difference in his work versus that of an AM talk show host: “My competition is 10 music stations playing hit songs. If Ken Chiampou and I don’t entertain this second, the audience is gone.”

Little noticed was that stations like WTKS-FM shared less than 8% of its cume with WDBO-AM (a very serious station!) WTKS sharing was with WMMO-FM and other alt rock and FM AC stations. While radio people think “talk is talk,” the audience perceives FM talk and AM talk to be very different formats. Completely different.

Today, to drive audience to an FM talk station the strategy proven to fail is to air AM shows on FM without making significant accommodations for the differences in the band. Profound differences.

WGN Radio is adding the Premiere Networks program “Verdict with Ted Cruz” lineup airing Sunday nights at 8:00 pm The program is hosted by Texas Republican Senator and Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz and national radio personality and political commentator Ben Ferguson.

BIA Blogs Offer Tariffs Guidance. New Jersey public media network NJ PBS and public radio outlet WNYC announce their live broadcasts covering the New Jersey gubernatorial race with conversations with the candidates. Republican candidates will appear on May 7, at 7:00 pm; Democratic candidates will appear on May 12, at 7:00 pm. The broadcasters say the goal is to have the candidates engage in civil, solutions-based discussion about issues facing New Jersey.

NHPR Nominated for a Peabody. New Hampshire Public Radio and collaborator The Pudding are being nominated for a Peabody Award in the Immersive & Interactive category for “Failures to Act” — reporting that delved into one of the largest youth detention abuse cases in American history that took place in New Hampshire. The reporting revealed the stories contained in more than 1,281 civil lawsuits filed by people who say they were abused as children while in state custody.
