“Brave New World” Panel Set for TALKERS 2024: Radio and Beyond

A panel presenting an array of some of the broadcasting industry’s leading experts on forward-edge issues has been set for TALKERS 2024: Radio and Beyond at Hofstra University on Friday, June 7. Titled, “Brave New World,” the session will explore the ever-evolving landscape of radio and talk media, as well as the broadcasting arts in general from the perspective of the media consuming habits of the younger generation and the massive technological/cultural changes at hand. Topics will include navigating and strategizing YouTube, social media, podcasting, intellectual property, talent rights and the extraordinary impact of artificial intelligence. Speakers will include (in alphabetical order): Scot Bertram, GM, WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, Hillsdale College; Heather Cohen, president, The Weiss Agency; Steven Goldstein, CEO, Amplifi Media; Matthew B. Harrison, Esq., associate publisher, TALKERS/senior partner, Harrison Media Law; and John T. Hillsdale College Student Wins Best Documentary from IBS

Pictured above is Hillsdale College student Thérèse Boudreaux (’24) who won first place for Best Documentary at this year’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards presented at the organization’s conference hosted in New York City. Boudreaux’s entry was PFAS: Forever Chemicals,” and this award marks WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM’s eighth national first-place award from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. WRFH general manager Scot Bertram states, “Our students produce impressive content, and once again their hard work has been recognized. Our students have a passion for audio and storytelling. They’ve dedicated themselves to creating high-quality programming and that effort is reflected in their accomplishments.”

Hillsdale College announces that its students claimed six spots as finalists for the College Broadcasters, Inc Awards, the winners of which will be announced in October at the CBI convention in Orlando. Scott Bertram is general manager of the school’s WRFH. He says, “I’m very proud of our students for their well-deserved recognition. This is the largest number of CBI finalists in Hillsdale history, and is a testament to the quality work produced by our students.”

C-SPAN announces that Altice USA chairman and CEO Dennis Mathew joins the C-SPAN board of directors, succeeding Altice USA’s former CEO Dexter Goei. A veteran of the telecommunications industry, Mathew joined Altice USA in late 2022 from Comcast, where he spent 17 years in senior corporate and leadership positions.

Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, in association with Telepictures, and Audacy announce the new program, “Extra: The Podcast,” a weekly podcast from the Emmy Award-winning TV show “Extra” as it enters its 30th season. “Extra: The Podcast” will cover the week’s major headlines as well as extended versions of “Extra’s” biggest interviews with no time limit, allowing listeners to hear the raw conversations that go even more in-depth and feature moments that didn’t make the TV show.

Premiere Networks and Amy Brown announce the addition of “What’s God Got To Do With It?” hosted by Leanne Ellington to The Amy Brown Podcast Network. The weekly podcast features “self-image scientist, best-selling author and internationally sought-after speaker Leanne Ellington using her own experience to guide listeners who want to discover their spiritual path and connect with a higher power in a forum that builds confidence and offers support.”

— SiriusXM and sports talk personality Adam Schein agree to a new, four-year contract that keeps Schein hosting his daily late morning show “Schein on Sports” on the Mad Dog Sports Radio channel. Schein will also continue to host his newly rebranded SiriusXM podcast, now titled “Rise and Schein,” which features compelling long-form interviews with athletes and celebrities.

— Hillsdale College’s WRFH “Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM” in Hillsdale, Michigan takes home the top honors at the 2023 Michigan Student Broadcast Awards, hosted by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. The station was named the “2023 College Audio Station of the Year” and received nine individual awards. Station general manager Scot Bertram comments, “Our student broadcasters and journalists are committed to producing high-quality content that keeps listeners engaged. We’re honored to have that work recognized by such a prestigious organization.”
