Triton Digital is releasing the July 2023 U.S. Podcast Report that ranks podcasts based on weekly average downloads for participating publishers. NPR’s “NPR News Now” remains in the #1 position, with audiochuck’s “Crime Junkie” taking over the #2 spot from NBCUniversal News Group’s “Dateline NBC,” now at #3. Radioim related podcasts in the top 25 include Cumulus Podcast Network’s “The Dan Bongino Show” at #7, Salem Podcast Network’s “The Charlie Kirk Show” at #21, and Cumulus Podcast Network’s “The Mark Levin Show” at #22. Triton notes that Cumulus experienced data collection issues with the Daily Wire shows (such as “The Ben Shapiro Show” which ranked #3 in the June report) during this period. FOX Sports Radio Announces Second Season of “Countdown to Kickoff”

FOX Sports Radio is bringing “Countdown to Kickoff” back for another season. The weekend show, presented by BetMGM, launches this weekend (8/19-20). The Saturday show airs from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon ET as aim lead-in to the weekend in college football and is hosted by FSR weekend personality Brian Noe who’s joined by former All-American Penn State left guard Rich Ohrnberger and betting analyst Jared Smith. The Sunday show airs from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm ET, also hosted by Noe and features feature NFL veteran Geoff Schwartz, along with professional sports bettor and KrackWins.com founder Bill “Krack” Krackomberger.

Cumulus and Former KTCK-AM/FM, Dallas Hosts Ordered to Mediation

The legal skirmish between Cumulus Media and former KTCK-AM/FM, Dallas-Fort Worth sports talk hosts Dan McDowell and Jake Kemp is being ordered to mediation by U.S. District Court Judge Karen Gren Scholer. Cumulus had petitioned the court for an emergency temporary restraining order to stop the duo from publishingim their podcast “The Dumb Zone,” arguing that it violates the terms of their contracts, specifically the non-compete clause. McDowell and Kemp left “The Ticket” in July after being unable to come to terms on a renewal due to the two sides’ disagreement over digital initiatives. Since then, the two have been producing the aforementioned podcast. In response to the suit filed by Cumulus, McDowell and Kemp argue, “Plaintiff’s business is the operation of terrestrial radio stations – old media – and it was only in that business that Plaintiff employed Defendants. Plaintiff has realized only too late that it should have been moving into new media platforms for years now. Defendants’ new venture does not compete with Plaintiff, and their words and actions have complied with the restrictive covenants of their employment contracts despite, as will be shown below, almost all of those covenants are illegal restrictions on Defendants’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act.” Mediation has been set for August 22.

WFDF, Detroit Flips to Sports; Former Talk Hosts “Infuriated”

The Detroit Metro Times is reporting on the flip of Kevin Adell’s WFDF-AM, Detroit from urban talk to sports talk and the response to the move from numerous people who hosted shows at the station. Adell bought the former Radio Disney station in January of 2015 and launched “910 The Superstation” featuring Black talk hosts whoim were not paid but given the ability to get their message out. Adell promoted the station as “Detroit’s Only Urban Tall Station” via billboards throughout the metro area. The Metro Times piece says hosts learned of the change in an email delivered last Friday night that said, “Your show will no longer air on WFDF 910AM Superstation. All access passes have been revoked and you are no longer allowed on the premises. The guard has been notified not to give you entry.” The piece goes on to say, “The terse email and sudden change infuriated some of the hosts and prompted others to accuse the owner, millionaire Kevin Adell, of exploiting Black people by turning racial anxiety into entertainment and failing to pay the hosts for their shows.” But Adell tells the paper “the format was no longer profitable and only attracted about 2,100 listeners a month, an abysmally small audience for a radio station. ‘When you look at it, no one supported it. Washington State Sports Host Mark Scholten Dies

Sports talk radio personality Mark Scholten died on Monday (8/14) of natural causes at age 54. Scholtenim worked at Saga Communications’ Bellingham, Washington stations for decades hosting his program “The Zone” on both news/talk KGMI-AM and sports talk KPUG-AM. Saga says, “He was a skilled broadcaster of sports at all levels, but was especially known for his knowledge of and dedication to Whatcom County high school teams, their athletes and coaches. His family thanks the community for their outpouring of support, and says they’ll announce plans for a memorial in coming days.”

If you are on the programming or on-air side, passionate about your content, help your sellers and managers. Time to learn the skills necessary to help your team and yourself at the same time. The radio business is becoming so undervalued and distressed, beaten down by too much debt and not enough disciplined, strategic thinking.

Kevin Slaten to Return to Sports Talk KFNS, St. Louis

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that radio personality Kevin Slaten is returning to sports talk outlet KFNS-AM “590 The Fan” and will join Nate Lucas and Bob Ramsey on the 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm “High Noon”im program. The story notes that Slaten last worked at KFNS seven years ago and this will be his sixth stint with the station. Slaten has a reputation in the market for being controversial. He also hosts a conservative political podcast called “The King’s Court” and previously worked for the late Bob Romanik, a political raconteur whose talk station KQQZ-AM was shut down by the FCC after it was discovered that Romanik, a convicted felon, was illegally operating the station. Urban One Needs Time to File Late Quarterly Reports

Urban One files notice with the SEC of its inability to file quarterly financial reports on time due to the change in its independent public accounting firms. As previously reported, Urban One realized the need to re-evaluate its accounting for the valuation of its investment interest in MGM National Harbor, which it sold for cash proceeds of approximately $136.8 million on April 21,im 2023. Consequently, it dismissed the accounting firm BDO USA, LLP and hired Ernst & Young LLP to serve as the company’s independent registered public accounting firm for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023 effective as of July 12, 2023. In the filing, Urban One says, “Given the change of the Company’s independent registered public accounting firm and the work required for E&Y to re-familiarize itself with the Company, the Company’s continued assessment of its internal controls, the Company is not able to finalize the financial statements and related information for inclusion in its quarterly report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2023. The company is working to complete quarter reports for the first two quarter of 2023.

Townsquare Media Q2 Net Revenue Off 0.6%

Townsquare Media, Inc reports its financial results for the second quarter of 2023 and says net revenue for the period was $121.2 million, a decline of 0.6% from the same period in 2022. Breaking the company’s revenue down by segment, Broadcast Advertising net revenue decreased $3.3 million, or 5.8%, and Subscription Digital Marketing Solutions net revenue decreased $1.7 million, or 7.5%, compared to the same period in 2022. These revenue declines were largely offset by Digital Advertising net revenue which increased $4 million, or 10.6% from Q2 of 2022. Townsquare reports a net loss of $2.7 million in Q2 of 2023 compared to the net income of $4.9im million reported in Q2 of 2022, primarily due to a $16.8 million increase in non-cash impairment charges to the company’s FCC licenses and investments, partially offset by an increase in other income, net due to a $5.2 million gain on the sale of one of the company’s investments and an increase in the effective tax rate for the current period. Townsquare CEO Bill Wilson says, “I am pleased to share that Townsquare’s digital growth engine continued to drive results in the second quarter, demonstrating its strength and resiliency, as we delivered second quarter net revenue and Adjusted EBITDA that met our previously issued guidance… With its differentiated and sophisticated products and solutions, our Digital Advertising segment was once again our largest driver of growth, increasing second quarter net revenue by 11% year-over-year… The strong cash generation characteristics of our assets allowed us to produce $31 million of cash flow from operations in the first six months of 2023, an increase of $8 million as compared to the prior year. We could not be more pleased to share that given our strong cash position, we were able to repurchase nearly 9% of our total shares outstanding, repurchase and retire approximately $13 million of our Unsecured Senior Notes at a discount, and pay a high-yielding dividend to our shareholders during the first six months of the year. We also ended the quarter with a strong cash balance of $50 million and net leverage of 4.36x, retaining financial flexibility moving forward.”

Hubbard Broadcasting’s all-news WTOP-FM, Washington, DC announces that three news pros are named to news director roles for the station. Monique Hayes is promoted to AM broadcast news director; Bill McFarland joins WTOP as PM broadcast news director; and Giang Nguyen joins the station as digital news director. TALKERS Vice President/Executive Editor Kevin Casey is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast

Last month marked the 33rd anniversary of the launch of TALKERS magazine – the talk media industry trade publication founded by Michael Harrison in July of 1990. The term “talk media” established and popularized byim the journal refers to AM, FM, online and satellite talk radio, cable news/talk TV, and talk podcasting.

Marking this third-of-a-century milestone, TALKERS longtime VP/executive editor, Kevin Casey is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “The Michael Harrison Interview.” Casey, then a program director for Clear Channel’s WHYN, imSpringfield, MA, joined TALKERS as its managing editor almost a quarter-of-a-century ago in 2000. The big story during that pre-9/11 year was the excruciatingly inconclusive presidential election between Texas Governor George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore that took over a month to settle.

NPR Member Stationsim follows at #2 (71,573 AAS) and Audacy ranks #3 (68,414 AAS). Cumulus Streaming Network ranks #4 (40,785 AAS).
