WWO: The Effects of Nielsen’s Three-Minute Qualifier

The Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group blog post this week looks at the effects of the changes to Nielsen’s PPM ratings system that has provided significant increases in listening across demographics and time periods. This audience growth is due to Nielsen’s three-minute qualifier modernization which provides a significantly more comprehensive and realistic definition of AM/FM radio’s audience and their listening behavior. The post notes that Nielsen found 23% of PPM listening occasionsimg were three or four minutes. Under the old five-minute listening qualifier rule, none of this tuning would have received listening credit. Effective with the January 2025 PPM survey, Nielsen is now crediting tuning occasions that are three minutes or greater. What are the results so far? First, drive times and weekends experience the greatest growth. Comparing January 2024 to January 2025 for persons 12+ and 25-54 reveals double-digit growth for all dayparts. Weekends and drives times have the greatest increases. Second, AM/FM radio’s listening profile now skews younger: Every major buying demographic has a higher composition of listening. Persons 65+ is the only demographic where AM/FM radio’s audience composition is reduced. Persons 25-54, AM/FM radio’s most popular buying demographic, experiences the largest increase in audience composition. Persons 18-49 have the next largest growth. And third, format shares remain stable. Versus October 2024, PPM January 2025 format shares are very consistent. An uptick in news/talk AQH composition is most likely more due to a heavier news cycle (major weather stories and a new president) than a PPM methodology enhancement. In local markets, there is more share variation. See the complete blog post here.

RTDNA Requests White House Reinstate AP Reporters

The Radio Television Digital News Association is requesting that Associated Press reporters and photographers be reinstated in their access to the Oval Office and Air Force One. The administration revoked the AP’s press pool designation for events occurring in the Oval Office and the president’s aircraft because of the organization’s use of the AP Stylebook. That criticism includes that news organizations are referencing the Gulf of Mexico instead of the Gulf of America. The administration also said the AP isimg “weaponizing language through their stylebook to push a partisan worldview in contrast with the traditional and deeply held beliefs of many Americans and many people around the world.” RTDNA president and CEO Dan Shelley states, “The current White House moves targeting one of the world’s oldest and most respected news outlets are outrageous and unacceptable. It is the Trump administration, and not the Associated Press, that is trying to contort facts so that they align with its often divisive, and sometimes completely erroneous, version of the truth. We protest the administration’s actions in this instance and object to its effort to shape shift legitimate fact-based journalism to better resemble its alternative versions of the truth.”

Post-Wildfires: iHeart LA and the Dream Center Raised Over $15 million to Benefit the Los Angeles Community

imJust hours after the series of devastating wildfires broke out in Los Angeles, iHeart LA and the Dream Center – a resource center focused on providing support to those affected by homelessness, hunger and crisis – launched a national and local media campaign that asked local listeners to contribute essential items and cash to support those affected by the fires, many of whom had lost everything.  Dream CenterWhat followed was an outpouring of love and support that exceeded any expectation, and which – thanks to the generosity of friends, neighbors and communities – has become one of the largest grassroots giving efforts in iHeart’s history.

Since the fundraising and donation effort launched on Tuesday, Jan 7:

• Over 8,000 people have volunteered;
• More than 80,000 individuals have received essential supplies like food, water, diapers, clothing and more onsite;
• Over 19,000 cars have gone through the Dream Center supply line;
• The initiative has raised over $15 million in cash and in-kind donations, with contributions still being accepted.

The results are testament to the power of local communities, which historically come together to support one another during times of disaster and crisis.

“The strength, generosity and resiliency of our LA communities is truly powerful — and the way our broadcast radio listeners have come together to support one another is incredibly humbling,” said Paul Corvino, division president for iHeart LA.  “While iHeart and the Dream Center were instrumental in connecting those in need with those eager to help, it was the community itself that has been incredibly inspirational, and which has been vital in keeping these efforts alive and ensuring that support is still available to those who need it the most, when they need it.”

“The outpouring of love and generosity we have witnessed in response to this crisis has been nothing short of extraordinary. In times of disaster, it is the strength of our community that shines the brightest, and we are humbled to see so many individuals stepping up to help their neighbors in need,” said Matthew Barnett, founder of Dream Center. “Thanks to our partnership with iHeartMedia Los Angeles and the unwavering support of our volunteers, donors, and community members, we have been able to provide essential aid to thousands who have lost so much. This effort is a testament to the power of compassion and unity, and we remain committed to serving those in need for as long as it takes.”

A Star Is Born!

By Kathy Carr
President, Howie Carr Radio Network (HCRN)

TALKERS EXCLUSIVE

Kathy Carr IDAfter the first White House press briefing by the youngest presidential press secretary in history, the calls, emails and texts keep flowing in to me about Karoline Leavitt.

Even some of my liberal relatives have said, “She sounds very confident and knowledgeable.” That’s because she is, I texted back. Often in this business, people will try to push a young person in front of you. They will tell you, in all sincerity if not total accuracy, that this person is the next big star. In the case of Karoline Leavitt, my client was right.

Karoline LeavittBack in 2022, we were at a client remote, and the owner told me he wanted to introduce us to this young lady who had been a White House aide near the end of Trump’s term. “She is going places,” our client told us.

At age 24, Karoline was running for Congress in the seacoast district of New Hampshire. She was an underdog in the GOP primary to an establishment candidate, as well as a former U.S. senator’s wife. Don’t worry about it, our client told us, Karoline is going to win. When you hear something like that, you try not to roll your eyes, but you are, shall we say, skeptical.

But this time, at a car dealership in Portsmouth, it took about 45 seconds to realize that she had it. She worked the showroom like a seasoned political pro, shaking every hand in the place. She looked me in the eye and shook my hand firmly, but not too firmly. She spoke in complete sentences with no ahhhs or ummms. She didn’t punctuate every sentence with some variation of “like” or “you know.”

Despite being heavily outspent, Karoline handily won the GOP primary against her older, better-financed opponents. I truly felt she was going to defeat the Democrat incumbent. I donated to her campaign more than once.

We were stunned when she did not win. I spoke to her the day after the loss and told her that although it might not seem like it now, everything happens for a reason and that something better is coming. I was just trying to make her feel better, but this time it was true.

Howie Carr

Soon after her defeat, we met for lunch, and I tried to recruit her as a full-time employee for our radio network. She politely declined, but did work for us as a freelancer and fill-in talk show host. (She was great!) At the end of her stint, she took us out to dinner, picked up the check, gave us a bottle of champagne and posted a video on her (very popular) social media promoting Howie’s latest book. We left dinner that night thinking, Karoline is going places.

So, there she was this week at the podium in the Brady Briefing Room in her beautiful magenta jacket and perfect make-up. But this is no dumb blonde. Her poise is beyond impressive, and everyone now realizes she is not just a pretty face. To the briefing she brought no binder, just brains.

Karoline Leavitt

In the winter of 2023, knowing that President Trump was going to run again, we invited her to dinner with us at Mar-A-Lago. Howie made a point of saying hello to POTUS and putting in a good word for the president’s former White House aide. With thumbs up, she posed for a quick photo with President Trump and Howie. She was wearing a jazzy crème and green dress – she always looks like a million bucks!

We are not the sole reason she was hired for the campaign, but we are proud to have played even a small part.

People often ask me what the most rewarding part is about being in the media. Some think it is the money, influence or perks. Those are all great but what a rush it is to see the next big star being born. And her name is Karoline Leavitt.

WBT AM-FM, Charlotte and Moments of Hope Church Raise Over $1,000,000 to Help Those in Need

Radio One’s News Talk 1110/99.3 WBT, Charlotte and Moments of Hope Church tell TALKERS that their collaborative efforts during the 2024 holiday season raised over $300,000. This milestone brings the total funds raised since 2020 as part of the City of Hope CLT campaign to over $1 million, supporting those in need across the Charlotte region and Western North Carolina.  David ChadwickDavid Chadwick, senior pastor of Moments of Hope Church and host of “The David Chadwick Show,” one of WBT’s longest-running local programs, reflects, “In 2020, amidst the Covid crisis, Bo Thompson, Pat McCrory and I were talking in the studio at WBT and asking, ‘What can we do to help those in need?’   I knew that Moments of Hope Church had a generous congregation, and I recognized the incredible reach of WBT’s 50,000-watt mic.  That conversation sparked the idea of a matching gift from MOHC and WBT to ask its listeners to match the gift during the Christmas season.  Since then, the partnership between MOHC, WBT, and all the WBT personalities has raised over $1 million to help feed children in the Charlotte area and, this past year, to help rebuild the lives of victims of hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.  It has been an honor to use the gifts that God has given both organizations to help and serve others in need.  It truly is more blessed to give than to receive.”  WBT program director, Mike Schaefer, adds: “WBT’s commitment to ‘Lead Local’ goes beyond delivering news and information.  For nearly 103 years, this station has been woven into the fabric of Charlotte, and helping those in need is at the core of our mission.  Partnering with David and his congregation to serve the most vulnerable among us aligns perfectly with our mission.”  Radio One Charlotte and Richmond RVP/GM, Marsha Landess echoed these sentiments:  “We are proud to use the WBT platform to support the incredible work that David and his congregation have done.  Since 2020, this partnership has demonstrated the power of community, especially in a crisis like Hurricane Helene. Raising over $1M for those in need is a testament to what we can achieve together.   We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community we are so proud to be a part of.”  The David Chadwick Show airs Sundays from 8:00 am – 9:00 am on WBT, further underscoring the potential productivity of local weekend programming.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Fair Use Victory: What It Means for Content Creators

By Matthew B. Harrison
TALKERS, VP/Associate Publisher
Harrison Media Law, Senior Partner
Goodphone Communications, Executive Producer

imIn a recent high-profile case, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel successfully defended himself against a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by former congressman George Santos. The case, which centered on Kimmel’s use of prank videos involving Santos, highlights the ongoing importance of fair use protections for media creators, broadcasters, and digital content producers.

The dispute began when Kimmel used clips of prank videos that featured Santos as part of his comedic commentary on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” program. Santos alleged that Kimmel’s use of the videos constituted copyright infringement and sought damages, claiming unauthorized use of his content. However, the court ruled in favor of Kimmel, citing fair use as the primary defense. The judge noted that Kimmel’s use of the videos fell under fair use because it was transformative, used for commentary and criticism, and did not replace the original work’s market value.

This ruling has significant implications for media content creators. Fair use is a cornerstone of U.S. copyright law, allowing limited use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, education, and parody. For broadcasters, YouTubers, podcasters, and other digital content creators, the Kimmel decision reaffirms that transformative use – where the original material is repurposed to add new meaning or context – is often protected under fair use.

The court’s emphasis on commentary and criticism is particularly relevant for creators who rely on existing media to produce content. For example, reaction videos, parodies, and satirical takes are common formats in digital media. The Kimmel case serves as a reminder that using copyrighted material to engage in meaningful critique or humor can fall squarely within fair use, provided the new work adds value and does not simply replicate the original.

However, this case also underscores the importance of understanding the boundaries of fair use. Creators should ensure their work meets key criteria: transformation of the original content, limited use, and a lack of negative impact on the original work’s market. While Kimmel’s team successfully navigated these elements, creators without the resources of a major broadcaster may face challenges if their work is contested.

Ultimately, Kimmel’s fair use victory is a win for free expression and creativity in media. It reinforces the ability of content creators to engage with and critique cultural moments without fear of legal repercussions, as long as their use aligns with fair use principles. For media creators navigating the digital landscape, this case provides both a legal precedent and a valuable lesson in the power of transformative content.

WABC Radio and Red Apple Media owner John Catsimatidis set a festive tone by introducing legendary entertainer (and multi-station NYC radio personality) Joe Piscopo. Piscopo delivered an unforgettable performance of Frank Sinatra classics, including “New York, New York,” igniting a chorus of guests singing along. “This is what makes New York the greatest city in the world!” exclaimed Catsimatidis, who shared the stage with WABC stars Rita Cosby, Sid Rosenberg, and Frank Morano, alongside his wife (and WABC co-owner), Margo Catsimatidis, and WABC/Red Apple Media president Chad Lopez.

Lopez lauded Miller’s career. “Suzanne has achieved over $5 million in sales and transactions, created 500 jobs, and played a pivotal role in rebuilding Battery Park after 9/11,” he remarked. “But if you ask Suzanne, she’ll tell you her greatest accomplishments are her two children. That humility is what makes her so special.”

Miller, visibly moved, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the audience. “A year and a half ago, I was at my kitchen table with my kids, dreaming about ‘The Miller Report,’” she shared. “Today, we’ve touched over 5.5 million people, discussing New York, real estate, and life itself. This city, these people, it’s what drives me.”

Margo Catsimatidis (l), Suzanne Miller (c), and John Catsimatidis celebrate last night at gala WABC party.

She recounted her journey as a Brooklyn-born daughter of immigrants, whose parents arrived with just $30 after surviving immense hardships during World War II. Recounting her humble beginnings in Canarsie, she gave a shout out to another Canarsie kid, radio host and Guardian Angels founder, Curtis Sliwa, also in the room. Her mother’s investment in a Brooklyn property sparked Miller’s lifelong passion for real estate. “That’s when my love for New York began,” she said. “This city is tough, but its heart is unbreakable. Never bet against New York!”

Rita Cosby highlighted Miller’s impact on the city. “Suzanne, you’ve been a cornerstone of WABC and a vital part of New York’s growth,” Cosby praised. “You embody what makes this city thrive – vision, grit, and compassion.”

Sid Rosenberg delivered his assessment of the Big Apple: “Real estate is booming here in New York, but we’ve got to vote smart. It’s time to bring back our beautiful city and state to what they should be – but we need to have the right leadership,” he said in his signature New York style.

As the evening progressed, Miller’s humor and candor shone. She thanked her team, family, and key supporters, including Gary Brody, who helped brand “The Miller Report.” She also paid tribute to Margo Catsimatidis, calling her “the First Lady of New York” for her “elegance and influence.” As for the city’s future. “We’ve got work to do,” she said passionately. “But New York isn’t just going to survive – it’s going to thrive.”

The WABC Awards Party was a testament to the enduring spirit of New York City and the power of community. In the words of Chad Lopez, “Tonight, we honor Suzanne Miller not just for what she’s done, but for what she inspires us all to be.”

Signal Hill Insights Fall Report: YouTube Reaches New High in Podcast Consumption

imCumulus Media in partnership with Signal Hill Insights, yesterday (12/2) released Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights’ Podcast Download – Fall 2024 Report, a comprehensive evaluation of the latest podcast audience trends. This 13th edition of the study examining the habits of weekly podcast consumers is part of Cumulus Media’s initiative to share insights and research findings with the podcast community.  A key finding uncovered in the Podcast Download Report is that YouTube continues its growth as the dominant podcast platform for consumption, reaching a new high.  “Though it began as an auditory experience, over the past few years we’ve seen the growth of podcast visuals, which go hand-in-hand with the similar ascendance of YouTube as a podcast platform,” said Lauren Vetrano, VP of advertiser studies and insights, Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group®. Signal“We currently see over a third of weekly podcast consumers using YouTube the most for their podcast consumption, up from 28% year over year. Similarly, one in three podcast consumers now prefer podcasts with a video component. Video, and by extension YouTube, cannot be ignored as an important aspect of the podcast experience.”  “Thumbnails turn out to be a key discovery driver on YouTube, especially among younger consumers. 53% of those 18 – 34 say they’ve chosen a podcast on the platform based upon the thumbnail,” said Paul Riismandel, president of Signal Hill Insights. “The title or persons featured in that graphic are the two top reasons for choosing an episode. This finding provides direction for podcasters looking to grow their audiences.”

The Fall 2024 edition reveals valuable insights for content creators and advertisers. Some highlights from the report:

• YouTube is the most utilized podcast listening platform in the U.S. over the past two years: 34% say it is the platform they use the most, followed by Spotify (17%) and Apple (11%)
• As the world’s entertainment search engine, YouTube is the dominant podcast discovery platform where audiences are more likely to find podcasts
• YouTube is the most utilized podcast listening platform among Podcast Newcomers, Podcast Pioneers, and heavy podcast consumers
• Younger podcast consumers are more likely to consume a podcast because of the thumbnail image on YouTube versus older podcast consumers
• Text and the podcast title on the thumbnail are the biggest reasons podcast consumers will pick a podcast on YouTube

Endangered Species DJ Elvis Duran: “We Are in the Friendship Business”

Elvis Duran ID Premiere Networks nationally syndicated personality Elvis Duran, host of “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,” was featured on “CBS Sunday Morning” this past weekend (12/1).  Duran was interviewed by correspondent Mo Rocca for an in-depth piece about the magic of radio and how his personality has won him loyal fans, including some of the biggest names in pop music. Duran also discussed how his love for radio began when he was a young child. He shared that the special connection with on-air personalities is what originally drew him to the platform and that unique friendship continues to inspire him every day.  Duran stated, We are in the friendship business. I think about you (the listener) when you hop in your car in the morning. You’re either leaving a house that may be full of turmoil or going to a job with a boss you don’t like, but I have you for 20, 30 minutes, and I can be your friend,” said Duran. TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison states, “CBS Sunday Morning really nailed it with this piece. When the radio industry started telling DJs to ‘shut up and play the music’ and then backed it up by firing almost all the talented disc jockeys to save money, they basically forfeited their ownership of the popular music culture in America – not to mention the very backbone of radio itself, friendship and companionship. Endangered species like Elvis Duran are among the greatest ‘talkers’ out there and prove the potential for integrating talk and pop culture successfully can still keep the idea of ‘radio’ alive for years to come. The terms ‘disc jockey’ and ‘top 40’ are so obsolete.  This is a wonderful permutation of ‘talk radio’ and should be regarded as such.  I hope everyone in the business watches this past Sunday’s report.” Click HERE to watch.

Pew Study:  Newsmax among Top U.S. News Brands.  Newsmax The ratings competition for eyeballs and eardrums between multi-platform news content providers has grown increasingly fierce as burgeoning interest in politics – especially during this remarkably heated 2024 election cycle – has driven huge audiences to information venues seeking the latest data and ideological affirmation. The correlation between MSNBC’s notable ratings declines after the “Morning Joe” visit to Mar-a-Lago illustrated the sensitivity of branding and audience expectations within this volatile arena.  So, what media outlets did Americans turn to for political news during the heated 2024 presidential election?  Pew Research did some digging to find out and Newsmax has earned bragging rights for being among the top U.S. news brands for Americans seeking political news. The Pew survey for September of 2024 asked close to 10,000 Americans: “What news source do you turn to most often for political news?”  The question was open ended — with Pew giving no possible responses as respondents gave their own answers.  The Pew Study found Newsmax ranked among the top news outlets and networks and tied with media giants X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube — as respondents’ go-to source for citizens seeking political news. Newsmax even ranked ahead of the Associated Press and local news, and was just one percentage point behind NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and The New York Times.  Major established news outlets FOX News, CNN, and ABC News led the pack. “Multiple studies continue to show Newsmax is a major news player, and we are continuing to rise,” Newsmax Inc. CEO Chris Ruddy tells TALKERS. “The credit belongs to our team here and our viewers who are tired of old media and want the quality journalism we’re providing.” The Pew study confirms a recent Reuters Institute study that found Newsmax was one of the top 12 U.S. news brands for Americans.  The Reuters study found 8% of Americans — about 25 million Americans — turn to Newsmax on cable TV for their news at least weekly.  Starting as a conservative website, Newsmax was launched as an entrepreneurial initiative in 1998 by then-independent journalist Ruddy and expanded to include a TV network in 2014 .  Today, Newsmax estimates it reaches more than 40 million Americans through its television channels, online websites, and social media. The company has raised over $100 million for its Preferred Share Offering in its pre-IPO plan and expects to close soon.

Although I have had several simultaneous homes in different parts of the country during this stretch of time, the Springfield, Massachusetts area has played a very important role in my life.  And in this beautiful, ‘salt of the earth’ segment of America, my guest is well-known to just about all its civically, socially and politically active citizens. His half-century career has been a testimony to the power and importance of local media… which, as we all know, is rapidly becoming an endangered species.”  After decades of service, the recently retired executive editor of Reminder Publishing, continues his multi-faceted career in mass communications. Harrison comments, “I’m not sure he understands the meaning of the word retirement.” In his no-frills-down-to-the-basics career, Dobbs has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, freelance writer, radio talk show host, college instructor and was the editor of two nationally distributed magazines about animation. WWO: AM/FM and Podcasts Outperform TV in Auto Aftermarket Category

The latest blog post from the Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group looks at data from a study the company commissioned by MARU/Matchbox analyzing the auto aftermarket category.  Some of the key findings from the study include: 1) The segment has recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Annual spend,im number of retailers shopped, retailers shopped most often, brand perceptions, and advertising recall have recovered; 2) Brand equity and shopping patterns for the top two performers (AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts) are stable to up. The second-tier players are slightly off; 3) AM/FM radio and podcasts are the ideal platforms to advertise auto aftermarket. TV underperforms with category usage and brand equity: Heavy AM/FM radio and podcast listeners visit more retailers in the category, make more shopping trips, and spend far more than the average. Two key consumer segments, do-it-yourselfers and ultra-heavy shoppers are more likely to be heavy AM/FM radio listeners. TV viewers are weak category users. See the blog post here.

Election Takeaways for News/Talk Radio

MH UCFO studioThis presidential election cycle provided a number of insights, revelations, and takeaway lessons for news/talk radio.  And by using the term “news/talk radio” I mean all spoken word platforms on the AM/FM dial including commercial, public, educational, and ethnic outlets that provide news, politics, and commentary.  They are all RADIO.

1. Conservative talk radio is legitimate. Its detractors who claim its content and opinions only address a relatively small percentage of the American public and a dying demographic are obviously misreading the tea leaves.  Conservative talk radio is big, influential, and a long-time bellwether of American public opinion.  Conservative talk radio would do much better than it already does in terms of ratings and revenue if it were supported by its preponderance of financially crippled and intestinally paralyzed owners with the resources it needs to do what it does with maximum effectiveness.  The genre should stay the course, perhaps with renewed vigor and variety.

2. The potential for liberal talk radio has never been greater in the modern era.  Opinion radio works best when it is the resistance to “big” anything – big government, big media, big business, big religion, big tech, big pharma, and big BS. There are key differences between playing cultural offense and defense in this game.  The stage is now set for the first time since the blessed repeal of the Fairness Doctrine for a tremendous resistance and galvanizing on the left side of talk radio’s commercial offerings… now that the shoe is obviously on the other foot.  This should not be executed at the expense of conservative talk radio.  There are enough dead in the water music stations out there ready for new life.  And don’t tell me about Air America.  That’s ancient and inapplicable history.  I’m a broadcaster, not a politician. The true “battleground” of today’s dynamically polarized society should and can take place to a large and healthy extent on the AM and FM dial!  At present, YouTube is eating radio’s lunch with its energetic lineup of outstanding independent liberal talk talent (as well as conservative).

3. Public radio needs to come clean. Until public radio gets honest with itself as to what it actually represents on the true spectrum of public opinion, it will not realize growth, but rather a continuing background wallpaper role in American politics and cultural relevance. A new level of self-honesty will provide public radio with the boost it so desperately needs to move in a more pertinent direction.

4. Ethnic talk radio does not represent political monoliths. Time to wake up to that obvious fact and stop with the insulting blinders and stereotypes.

5. Joe Rogan. The radio industry should never have allowed Joe Rogan and those who will follow in his footsteps to be a non-AM/FM talk show host.   Talk radio and talk media are cousins and they currently are still genetically connected.  But they are also competitors and talk radio is fighting an uphill battle in that struggle.
