NYSBA Names John Catsimatidis Broadcaster of the Year

imgThe board of directors of the New York State Broadcasters Association names Red Apple Media CEO John Catsimatidis the New York Broadcaster of the Year for 2025. Catsimatidis will be honored at the NYSBA Broadcast Leadership and Hall of Fame Luncheon in New York City on October 22. NYSBA president David Donovan says, “We are honored to have him as NYSBA’s Broadcaster of the Year. John has had unparalleled success turning around 77WABC and expanding Red Apple Media throughout the country. He has led legislative efforts to keep AM radio in vehicles, a vital issue for all New Yorkers.” Catsimatidis comments, “Thank you, Dave and the Board of the New York State Broadcasters Association for this honor. Radio is an integral part of listeners’ lives and often the only source of information during times of disaster. I ask everyone in radio to alert their listeners that car manufacturers are risking lives by taking AM off the dashboard of new cars. Together, we can stop this, and we must stop it.” Catsimatidis entered the radio business with the purchase WABC-AM in March 2020 and has since added WLIR-FM, Hampton Bays and WRCR-AM, Haverstraw to his portfolio of stations.

Stephenson Joins SiriusXM Board. Sirius XM Holdings Inc announces the appointment of Dave Stephenson to the company’s board of directors, effective September 18. He’ll serve on the board’s compensation committee. He currently serves as chief business officer and head of employee experience for Airbnb, Inc. He comments, “I am honored to be joining the board of SiriusXM, a company whose powerful combination of world-class content and technology I have long admired. I am excited to collaborate with the board and management to deliver increased value to listeners and shareholders.”

Newberry Renews with Quu. Quu Inc and its CEO, Steve Newberry, agree to a three-year deal for him to continue guiding the company. Since 2020, Newberry has led the company that has more than 2,000 radio stations using its technology to display real-time music, content, and advertiser messages on vehicle dashboards.

WWO Offers Media Planning Guide

imgThe Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group unveils an audio planning guide based on data from Edison Research and Nielsen data. Saying that there are incorrect assumptions among strategists and media planners about which audio media have the most listeners, chief insights officer Pierre Bouvard underscores that AM/FM radio is still the dominant ad-supported audio platform with a 66% share. Podcasting is second with a 20% share and this is true across all demographics. For those who are all-in on digital audio only, Bouvard says they are missing 70% of the potential audience as ad-supported Spotify, Pandora and podcasts reach only 30% of the U.S. in a typical day. Further, Bouvard says the data suggests an optimal allocation of audio ad spend: “The ideal allocation for a 25-54 audio plan is 62% AM/FM radio, 24% podcasts, 12% music streaming (Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music), and 2% SiriusXM satellite radio.” See the complete blog post here.

Judge Dismisses Newsmax Suit Against FOX

Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed Newsmax’s anti-trust suit against Fox Corporation and FOX News Network LLC, calling it an impermissible “shotgun pleading.” Judge Cannon provides the following definition of a shotgun pleading in her ruling:“The most common type [of shotgun pleading] – by a long shot – is a complaint containing multiple counts where each count adopts the allegations of all preceding counts, causing each successive count to carry all that came before and the last count to be a combination of the entire complaint.” The suit was dismissed without prejudice which gives Newsmax the opportunity to file an amended complaint, but it must do so by September 11 and “must not contain any successive counts that incorporate all prior allegations.” Judge Cannon also adds that if an amended complaint is filed, “each count must identify the particular legal basis for liability and contain specific factual allegations that support each cause of action within each count.

Brother Wease Out as iHeartMedia Flips WAIO-FM, Rochester to Rock

imgAfter 40 years on the air in the Rochester market, legendary radio personality Brother Wease is exiting iHeartMedia’s talk WAIO-FM where he’s been hosting the late morning show for the past two years (he’d been hosting the morning drive show there since November of 2008). According to the Democrat & Chronicle, Brother Wease told his audience that the company is flipping the talk station to rock and he, along with air personality Deanna King, are being let go. Brother Wease launched his on-air career on rock WCMF in 1984 in overnights and moved to morning drive in 1985. The show took off and became a highly successful one in the market for years. He left WCMF in late 2007 after contract talks with then-Entercom broke down and resurfaced on WAIO. Read the Democrat & Chronicle story here.

Buck Sexton Sues Real Estate Investment Trust

imgAccording to a report in Barron’s, Premiere Networks talk host Buck Sexton filing a federal lawsuit against RAD Diversified REIT, alleging they defrauded him of more than $100,000. In the complaint, Sexton alleges that RAD founders Dutch Mendenhall and Amy Vaughn solicited cash from him for investment coaching for property deals, neither of which ever happened. The story notes that this suit comes just weeks after Florida’s attorney general announced a probe into RAD saying the firm “appears to be a Ponzi scheme.” Sexton’s attorney writes in the complaint, “Despite being an experienced real estate investor, Mr. Sexton was taken in by the documents and investment returns touted by Mendenhall and his representatives. The defendants’ grand promises of sweeping returns never materialized.” See the Barron’s story here.

NAB Fires Up Campaign to Modernize Ownership Rules

The National Association of Broadcasters is urging Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to modernize decades-old broadcast ownership rules. news, emergency information and the live sports that bring communities together. Since April, NAB’s campaign has aired nearly a quarter million television andimg radio spots across 192 media markets, generating more than 1 billion impressions and $43 million in airtime from TV and radio stations. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt says, “Local stations are serving communities with live sports, trusted local news and life-saving emergency coverage – all available for free to every American. But outdated rules are shackling these stations from growing and innovating at a time when Big Tech operates with limitless scale and zero public interest obligations. Consumers deserve more – not fewer – local journalists on the ground and live sporting events accessible without a subscription. The FCC must act quickly to level the playing field so broadcasters can continue investing in the content communities rely on most.”

NFL analyst and senior producer at NFL Films, Greg Cosell, is now co-hosting theimg Sunday morning 8:00 am to 10:00 am show with Mike Harmon. Also, WGFX-FM, Nashville host Buck Reising joins longtime friend and FSR weekend personality Jason Fitz to co-anchor “Buck & Fitz” on Saturdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm ET. Fangirl Sports Network Founder and KNBR 49ers correspondent Tracy Sandler and Spectrum News Sports host and sideline reporter Nikki Kay are joining Alex Curry and Carmen Vitali on the 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Saturday program.

War of Words Breaks Out Between FOX and Newsmax Over Lawsuit

Yesterday, TALKERS reported the anti-trust lawsuit Newsmax is filing against Fox Corporation and Fox News Network, LLC in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida in which Newsmaximg accuses FOX of “engaging in an extensive and unlawful campaign to block competition in the market for right-leaning pay television news, including Newsmax.” imgA FOX spokesperson responded with the following: “Newsmax cannot sue their way out of their own competitive failures in the marketplace to chase headlines simply because they can’t attract viewers.” Newsmax issued the following statement in response to that saying, “If Newsmax was such a ratings failure, why has FOX spent so much time, energy, and resources to suppress us, block us, and denigrate us? The answer is obvious. Also please note that FOX in its statement does not deny any of our serious allegations.”

Kentucky Governor’s Podcast Joins SiriusXM

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signs a new deal to bring his podcast to the SiriusXM Podcast Network. Episodes will also air on the SiriusXM Progress channel. As part of the deal, SiriusXM Media acquires exclusive global ad sales rights to the audio edition of the podcast. In addition to the podcast, Governorimg Beshear will host a new series of live specials, “Andy Beshear Presents,” airing exclusively on SiriusXM Progress. The series will premiere Tuesday, September 9 at 12:00 noon ET. Beshear will be joined by fellow Progress host John Fugelsang and will take calls from listeners across the country. Governor Beshear says. “I want this podcast to be a space to bring people together – especially in such a stressful and divisive time in our country. This is a conversation with friends and we talk about things that matter to all of us: sports, politics, pop culture, our kids. Salem COO Stepping Down

Salem Media Group chief operating officer David Evans exited his role with the company on August 31. Evans joined Salem in 2000 as chief financial officer and later served as president of new media before becoming COO for the past three years. The company says that over his 25-year tenure, Evans played aimg significant role in shaping Salem’s growth and direction. Under his leadership, Salem launched and developed four major digital properties: Salem Web Network, Salem Church Products, Townhall Media, and Eagle Financial Publications. Salem CEO David Santrella says, “David has been an important part of Salem’s journey, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication, professionalism, and leadership over the years.” Salem co-founder Ed Atsinger adds, “David’s impact on Salem has been profound. NAB: Support for AM Radio Bill Surges

National Association of Broadcasters says that congressional support for the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act accelerated during the August congressional recess, with the bill now backed by 280 bipartisan cosponsorsimg in the U.S. House of Representatives and a filibuster-proof 61 in the U.S. Senate. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt says, “We thank the growing, bipartisan group of lawmakers standing up for their constituents who depend on AM radio. This support demonstrates a deep understanding that AM radio remains an essential lifeline for emergency alerts, local news and community connection. With significant momentum behind this bill, NAB urges House leadership to bring it to the floor without delay and preserve this vital service for the American public.”

Newsmax Files Anti-Trust Suit Against FOX News

Newsmax announces it has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Fox Corporation and Fox News Network, LLC in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Newsmax is accusing FOX of “engaging in an extensive and unlawful campaign to block competition in the market for right-leaning pay television news, including Newsmax.” The complaint alleges that FOX has abused its dominance in the right-leaning pay TV news market for years by coercing distributors into unfair carriage agreements designed toimg exclude or marginalize competitors like Newsmax. Further, Newsmax alleges that FOX News, “described in the complaint as a ‘must-have’ channel for distributors, leverages its market power to impose restrictions that harm consumers, stifle competition, and drive-up costs across the pay TV ecosystem.” Specifically, Newsmax alleges that “FOX conditions access to FOX News on imgagreements by distributors not to carry or to restrict competing right-leaning news channels. If distributors carry Newsmax, FOX forces them to also carry low-demand channels like FOX Business or FOX Sports 2 in their most widely viewed tiers, triggering potentially tens of millions in extra fees. These clauses penalize distributors for placing Newsmax in basic packages by requiring simultaneous promotion of FOX less popular channels.” Also, Newsmax alleges that FOX has pressured its guests to not appear on Newsmax, as well as has run online smear campaigns and hired private investigators targeting Newsmax executives to damage the Company’s credibility. Newsmax is asking the court to: 1) Declare FOX’s conduct unlawful under federal and state antitrust laws; 2) Award monetary damages as permitted by law; 3) Enjoin FOX from continuing exclusionary contracts and monopolistic practices; and 4) Order equitable relief to restore competition in right-leaning pay TV news.

Stillman Moves to Podcasting After Exiting “The Game”

The Tennessean reports that Nashville sports media personality Jared Stillman is relaunching his Stillman & Co. program as a podcast on the 440 Sports on-demand audio network. Stillman recently exited WPRT-FM,img Nashville “102.5 The Game” after being unable to strike a deal to renew his show. The new program will air live weekdays at 2:00 pm and goes online as a podcast by 3:30 pm that day. He tells the paper, “I was fortunate enough to have what I feel is an incredibly loyal core audience and I plan to provide for them a daily show every day that isn’t behind a paywall and 440 Sports gives me that opportunity. With very limited commercial interruption, the podcast should be able to get most people in Nashville through their afternoon commute.” Read The Tennessean story here.

Basilio Moves to WKGN, Knoxville

Sports talk host Tony Basilio is taking his radio program to MH2 Media’s WKGN-AM/W289CU, Knoxville.img He previously hosted his show on crosstown WJBE-AM. In making room for Basilio on WKGN, Bob Baskerville moved to afternoon drive to team up with Russell Smith in afternoons. Basilio says, “Bob has been really accommodating and gracious. Report: Howard Stern Delays SiriusXM Return

Numerous media outlets are circulating a story published in the Daily Mail that Howard Stern did not return to a live broadcast of his SiriusXM program today (9/2) as promised because he is frustrated “over the newimg contract.” Stern’s current five-year deal expires later this fall and speculation earlier this summer that the satcaster and Stern would part ways at the end of his current deal spurred Stern to issue a statement on his show (during summer re-runs) that he’d be back on September 2 to dispel the rumors. There are reports that Stern is dealing with his 98-year-old mother’s failing health and that is weighing on him. The story indicates Stern sent an email to his employees to explain the situation, but sources supplied no details about that email. The New York Post story says Stern’s listenership has gone from “20 million at its height to 125,000 daily listeners now.” However, SiriusXM doesn’t publish its listener data and no sources are provided for those figures. Bold Gold Newsman Mike Sakell to Retire

Bold Gold Media announces that Catskills news & sports director Mike Sakell is retiring from his role with the company after more than four decades broadcasting in the region. Sakell first began working in Sullivan County in 1980 when he joined WVOS. Bold Gold Media NY region general manager Dawn Ciorciari says,img “There are certain sounds that define a place, and for Sullivan County, Mike’s voice is one of them. For 45 years, it’s been the sound of calm, trust, and perseverance. His life has been a true lesson in resilience. His legacy will live far beyond the airwaves.” Bold Gold Media CEO Vince Benedetto adds, “Mike’s retirement is truly an end of an extraordinary and historic era in local broadcasting. Commercial Copy for Careworn Consumers

imgWhy I love going on sales calls with station reps: Meeting retailers, who have SUCH a feel for their customers’ (our listeners’) mindset. Following-up last week’s column exploring the societal angst we are living through, this week’s will recommend technique for scripting in what psychologists call the Age of Outrage Fatigue.

Emotional bandwidth is down. Skepticism is up. And the old tricks – hyperbole, urgency, shouty headlines – are backfiring. People aren’t just tuning-out content they disagree with; they’re tuning-out tone. They crave calm. Clarity. Credibility.

To cut-through:

— Clear beats clever. Instead of “Don’t sweat it – we’ve got your ducts in a row!” Try “Get your AC fixed today, and sleep comfortably tonight.”

— Ditch the drama. Instead of: “Drowning in debt?” Try: “Make a fresh start.”

— Frame your offer as an upgrade, not a fix for failure. Instead of: “Will you EVER be able to retire?” Try: “Plan your next chapter, on your terms.”

— Empathize, don’t exaggerate. People trust what feels human. Empty hype gets filtered out fast. “There’s never been a better time to buy a car!” goes in-one-ear-and-out-the-other.

— Earn attention quickly. The first sentence matters more than ever. Make it a question that includes “you” and/or “your” which describes the consumer situation that your advertiser can cure. “Is your money doing what you want it to?”

— Use specifics, not superlatives. “Best ever!” means nothing. Numbers and proof points build confidence.

— If you’re scripting with AI, rewrite to weed-out clichés. Restaurant spots that tout “a relaxing atmosphere” are verbal Styrofoam.

— Respect their time. Use short sentences. Bullet points. Clear next steps. Happy outcomes.

Today’s most effective copywriting calms the reader. It offers clarity in a crowded, chaotic world.

Edison: New Podcast Consumers Engage with Video Content

Data from Edison Research’s Infinite Dial and Edison Podcast Metrics reveals how important video content is to people just discovering podcasts and those likely to in the future. Edison calls the audience that started consuming podcasts within the last year “First-Years,” and those consuming for five years or more,img “Longtimers” and notes that 77% of “First-Years” are consuming podcasts while actually watching the video compared to 69% of “Longtimers” doing the same. Edison says that most new consumers and established podcast fans are actively watching while listening to video podcasts but that video is even more important for engaging with new audiences. While “Longtimers” currently have an affinity for audio only podcasts, that may change over time. Edison concludes that although podcasting is an audio-first platform, “many creators and marketers are likely missing an audience acquisition and engagement opportunity by not considering how to fit video content and video platforms into their strategic planning.”

NPR names Scott Detrow full-time host of the weekday edition of “All Things Considered,” effective September 29. Detrow will continue as a host of NPR’s daily news podcast “Consider This.” Detrow hasimg hosted the weekend edition of “All Things Considered” since May of 2023. WHYY, Philadelphia and public media distributor PRX are launching “Sports in America,” a new weekly public radio show and podcast hosted by journalist David Greene, on Tuesday, September 30. WABC Gala to Raise Funds for Charities

WABC, New York and Red Apple Media owners John and Margo Catsimatidis are hosting a star-studded gala in celebration of America’s 250th birthday on Friday, September 5 at Cipriani’s 42nd St. in New York City. The Catsimatidis say the gala will serve not only as a celebration of freedom but also as a reminder of the resilience, ideals, and shared spirit that continue to define the United States. Proceeds from the galaimg event will benefit The WABC Radio Foundation, The Tunnel To Towers Foundation, The Police Athletic League (PAL), and Shriners Children’s. The evening will feature performances of patriotic songs including WABC Saturday evening personality and singer Tony Orlando performing “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree”; Lee Greenwood performing “God Bless the USA” and America’s tenor Christopher Maccio will sing the National Anthem. Additionally, WABC personality Joe Piscopo will perform Frank Sinatra classics and station host Vinnie Medugno will sing oldies. The gala event will be hosted by 77WABC legendary air personality Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow.
