Newsmax Premieres “Carl Higbie Tonight”

Newsmax launched a 5:00 pm ET program called “Carl Higbie Frontline” yesterday (4/11), replacing “Spicer & Co” starring former Trump press secretary Sean Spicer, which Newsmax is not renewing. Higbie hosted the network’s “Saturday Report” from early 2020 to 2022. He has also served as co-host of the network’s flagship “Wake Up America Weekend” for the past 15 months. Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy says, “Carl served his country for many years as a decorated Navy SEAL, and with his ‘Carl Higbie Frontline’ will continue to push for the issues and values that he and Americans care about.”

RAB, BMI, and Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio, Inc announce that the 15th annual Rising Through the Ranks program is open for applications. It begins on August 1 with one virtual event from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET prior to the participants meeting in person August 8 – 10 in Nashville. As in years past, BMI will offer 20 scholarships for this year’s program. The scholarships will cover the cost of the professional development course, which is geared toward fostering and educating the current and emerging female radio managers in broadcast radio. WBUR announces that NPR’s Beijing correspondent Emily Feng is the winner of the 2022 Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize for her “The Black Gate” story that debuted on NPR’s “Up First” podcast. For the story, Feng worked with language rights activist Abduweli Ayup and producer Phoebe Wang to examine China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim groups by following one man’s quest to reunite with his wife and children who’ve been detained by Chinese authorities.

SiriusXM’s says its bipartisan political and news channel tweaks its program schedule. It says, “With the 2024 presidential race already underway, host Laura Coates will now kick-off coverage of the day’s breaking news from SiriusXM’s Washington, D.C. studios, with host Julie Mason returning to afternoons on the newly rebranded ‘The Julie Mason Show.’ Coates, who also serves as CNN’s senior legal analyst and host of ‘CNN Tonight,’ will continue to use her prosecutorial skills to analyze the top stories from a legal perspective.” Sirius XM says Mason is a veteran Washington journalist in her 12th year with the company. It adds, “Mason’s program will feature interviews with a compelling mix of journalists, strategists, and other politicos, as well as politicians from both sides of the political aisle. As the 26th annual installment of the talk media’s longest-running and most important national gathering draws closer, details of its exciting day-long agenda begin to come into focus. TALKERS 2023 will feature two “Programming News/Talk Radio in the Digital Era” panel sessions.

The first, moderated by Mike McVay, president, McVay Media, will feature panelists (in alphabetical order): Grace Blazer, VP, national NTS brand coordinator, director of news and AM programming Florida region, iHeartMedia; Kevin Delany, VP, news & talk programming, Westwood One; Matt Meany, program director, WABC, New York; Eric Stanger, VP, operations, “The Sean Hannity Show,” Premiere Networks; and Joe Thomas, talk show host/program director, WCHV, Charlottesville, VA.

Former CBS World News Roundup Anchor Bill Lynch Dies

Award-winning journalist Bill Lynch – former anchor of CBS News Radio’s “World News Roundup” – died on Tuesday in Lawrence, Kansas at the age of 77. Three years after getting out of the Army in 1968, Lynch joined WCBS Radio in New York City as a reporter and later as an assistant news director. He joined CBS News as a correspondent in 1981. In 1985, he became anchor of “World News Roundup” – a position he would hold until 1999.  Current “World News Roundup” anchor Steve Kathan says, “His booming voice and punchy writing style set him apart. He read and knew so much about so many issues and so many places. Bill Lynch was an influence on me and so many others who aimed to do what he could do.”

Monday Memo: Dominion v. FOX News

In Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion lawsuit, testimony and internal communications demonstrate that FOX News management and talent privately doubted election fraud claims they were broadcasting. Tucker Carlson messaged Laura Ingraham: “Sidney Powell is lying by the way. I caught her. It’s insane.”

Several FOX News Radio affiliates have asked what impact these disclosures have on station credibility.

 My advice: Your affiliation remains a franchise.

— 21% percent of FOX News viewers do say they trust the network less following the release of evidence in the Dominion case, per Maru Group poll commissioned by Variety. This is notable because FOX is not reporting the story, citing that it is the defendant; and because few minds change, generally, in divided America. We choose to believe what we choose to believe, and FOX simply got caught pandering.

— Trump loyalists are especially dug-in. His legal problems galvanize supporters’ view that he’s persecuted. At CPAC he proclaimed, “I am your retribution.”

— Affiliates: The FOX brand is your asset. To my ear, FOX Radio on-hour/half-hour newscasts report the same facts as ABC or CBS Radio newscasts. I haven’t tested this, but I’d bet a Martini at the Palm that reading transcripts – side-by-side with ABC or CBS Radio copy – the target demo’ couldn’t tell which-is-whose. But listener complaints – rooted in distrust that ABC and CBS are the proverbial “Mainstream Media” – caused several of my client stations to switch to FOX. Reaction was positive.

— Think car radio and assure listeners that they can “get a quick FOX News update” on-hour/half-hour “throughout your busy day.” “Because news that matters to you is changing fast,” listeners will want to “stay close to the news.”

— Bottom line: Unless the financial consequence of these legal actions drives FOX News out of business, hang in there.

WJR’s dedicated Panthers coverage will include live on-air and streaming broadcasts of the team’s home games from Ford Field, as well as away games. Five-time Michigan Association of Broadcasters award winner Chris Renwick will serve as play-by-play announcer. Renwick is senior news analyst for WJR and host of the station’s “SportsWrap.”

FOX News Radio Expands Weekend Programming

FOX News Radio adds new weekend programming to the radio network lineup. Beginning this weekend, “FOX News Rundown: From Washington” will air from 5:00 am to 6:00 am on Saturdays and “The Bret Baier Show” will air from 10:00 am to 11:00 am ET.  “FOX News Rundown” will “offer the previous week’s best stories, with a deep focus on the biggest stories emanating out of the nation’s capital.” It will be hosted by various FOX News political reporters including Jared Halpern and Chad Pergram. FOX says “The Bret Baier Show” provides listeners with the best of the week from “The Bret Baier Podcast.”

WKBN-TV, Youngstown, Ohio reports that a Northeast Ohio couple are in custody in Columbiana County jail after an incident at The Original Road House in East Palestine. Ohio where John Fredericks, Steve Bannon and others were broadcasting live at a radio town hall event. The station reports Alfred Ferrara of Cleveland and Mary Schroeder of Hudson, Ohio showed up at the restaurant and created a disturbance. Ferrara is being charged with inducing panic and resisting arrest after threatening to shoot up the restaurant. The two left the scene and ended up at the village’s water and sewer plant where their car got stuck in a tank of raw sewage.

Audacy’s sports talk outlet WJFK-FM, Washington, DC “106.7 The Fan” announces a multi-year extension to its flagship broadcast and digital partnership with MLB’s Washington Nationals. As part of the extended partnership, Nationals baseball will continue to be heard on “106.7 The Fan” and streamed digitally via the Audacy app for fans within the Nationals broadcast territory. Audacy Washingon SVP and market manager Ivy Savoy-Smith says, “Opening Day is finally here, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the return of baseball season by extending our partnership with the Washington Nationals. Focus360 promotes longtime director of sales planning Robbie Eisen to vice president of planning. The company says he has been instrumental in delivering results for hundreds of Focus360 clients since 2015. Also promoted is Erick Siqueira, who has been with the company as business development manager. He is now director of client services. In this new role within Focus360’s sales division, Siqueira will be working with agency planners and buyers across the country to promote the network programming.

Michael Kay Renews to Continue ESPN New York Show

As reported by the New York Post, afternoon drive personality Michael Kay has signed a contract extension with Good Karma Brands-operated sports talk WEPN-FM, New York “ESPN New York” that is a “seven-figure deal per year and is for multiple years.” The Post reported in January that the 62-year old Kay was seriously considering retirement. Kay announced the deal on his program yesterday (3/16) saying,  “When the story in The Post came out, I was pretty certain that was going to be it and I would leave the show after 21 years in September. It had been a great run, a long run. I just said, ‘That’s it. I’m probably too old to do it.’” Kay is supported on the show by co-host Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg. The show is simulcast on the YES TV network. Kay also serves as the television play-by-play announcer for New York Yankees baseball games. Read the Post story here.

NBCUniversal News Group’s “Dateline NBC” moves up two positions to bump audiochuck’s “Crime Junkie” out of the #2 spot. Today (3/13), CBS News Radio marks the 85th anniversary of its “World News Roundup” radio program with special programming throughout the day. CBS News Radio says, “When it launched on March 13, 1938, ‘World News Roundup’ changed broadcasting forever by being the first program to feature correspondents stationed around the globe reporting for one live broadcast. The first broadcast was anchored by Robert Trout and featured reporting by Edward R. Murrow, then a CBS executive, making his debut reporting on the show from Vienna. — NPR promotes Michel Martin to new a role as co-host of “Morning Edition.” Martin, who has been the host of the weekend edition of “All Things Considered” since 2015, takes over for Rachel Martin who is exiting to pursue other media opportunities. She begins working alongside Steve Inskeep, A Martínez and Leila Fadel on March 27.

— The Los Angeles Times’ James Rainey writes a profile piece this week about Tavis Smiley, former PBS personality and current owner of KBLA, Los Angeles – a talk station targeting the Black community. The piece addresses Smiley’s legal battles with PBS after he was accused of sexually harassing multiple women, the court case he lost and one he’s still involved in. — Edison Research is presenting a four-part series through its Edison’s Weekly Insights exploring the “power of traditional AM/FM radio in the U.S. This week’s edition reports, based on Edison’s Share of Ear study, “Listeners age 13+ in the U.S. spend 59% of their daily, ad-supported audio time with AM/FM radio, more time than with all other ad-supported audio sources combined, including YouTube, podcasts, and ad-supported streaming services. — Hillsdale College student Elena Lanning won first place for Most Creative/Innovative Show at this year’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference held in New York from February 23 to 26. Lanning was awarded first place for her show, “Five Minute Myths.” This award was the sixth national first-place honor from is WFRH, Hillsdale, Michigan “Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM” ’s sixth national first-place award from the National Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards. Additionally, WFRH’s Scot Bertram was named Best Faculty Advisor in radio. Bertram says, “I am thrilled for all the students whose hard work is being recognized. — Longtime Tampa Bay Rays radio broadcaster Dave Wills died early Sunday morning (3/5) at the age of 58. Wills and Andy Freed have been the radio broadcast team since the 2005 season. Prior to joining the Rays, Wills was part of the Chicago White Sox broadcast team in which he hosted pre- and post-game programs.

— Cumulus Media’s Westwood One continues its presentation of NCAA basketball conference championships this week and into next weekend. Westwood One will also broadcast Selection Sunday, which will reveal the 68-team field for both the men’s and the women’s tournaments. Jason Horowitz will host Selection Sunday coverage with former coach PJ Carlesimo serving as the men’s analyst and Debbie Antonelli as the women’s analyst.

— LiveOne reports that paid memberships for its subsidiaries Slacker Radio and PodcastOne grew by over 587,000 in the past 12 months and over 100,000 in the first two months of calendar 2023. Total members, including paid and ad-sponsored, are now at 2.85 million. LiveOne CEO Rob Ellin comments, “We are thrilled to have exceeded 2 million premium members on our platform, and we owe much of our growth to our B2B content partnerships, such as our longstanding collaboration with Tesla. — FOX News Audio is expanding its true crime content with a new weekly podcast as well as a True Crime Minute for smart speakers. “Outnumbered” co-host Emily Compagno will debut “The FOX True Crime Podcast with Emily Compagno” today (2/28) with new episodes dropping Tuesdays and Thursdays every week. Compagno will be joined each week by a team of FOX News Digital true crime reporters, legal and law enforcement experts and the FOX News Investigative Team.
