Rumble Launches Talk Livestreaming Lineup

Video-sharing platform and could services provider Rumble unveils Rumble Live, a linear livestreaming lineup of content that features well-known talk media personalities including Vince Coglianese, Steven Crowder, Russell Brand, and more. Rumble say it is reimagining the video platform experience byimg offering a format in which shows use the Rumble Raiding technology to follow one another and carry audiences seamlessly into the next show. Rumble chairman and CEO Chris Pavlovski says, “This is more proof that the content creator community at Rumble is the best place to be, because this new daily lineup will help everyone and be great programming for viewers. Creators in the lineup will build off each other’s audiences, and everyone on the platform will benefit by increased traffic across the board. Unlike the broadcast day on a television network, Rumble adheres to the principles of free speech and these are shows that people actually want to watch.”

Radio Personality Matt Pinfield Ready to Return After Stroke and Coma

Rock radio and television personality Matt Pinfield is out of the hospital and at a rehabilitation center recovering from a stoke that put him in a coma back in January. The 63-year-old Pinfield says he’s eagerimg to get back to work, “I am so grateful to be alive. The general consensus was that I wasn’t going to make it and here I am! I am overwhelmed and humbled by your love. I am beyond grateful for those that have stuck by me. My radio family includes my listeners, my dear friends, and the wonderful radio companies that continue to support me. It means the world to me. I cannot wait to get back to hosting “Flashback,” KLOS and SoCal Sound. We were told I might not speak or walk again, and my voice is back, and I am doing five hours of physical therapy a day and my walking continues to improve. There is nothing like my radio community.   I love you all.”

WABC’s Catsimatidis Promotes AM in Cars in NYPost Ad

Red Apple Media and WABC owner John Catsimatidis is taking out full-color ads in the New York Post in which he asks consumers not to buy a new car that doesn’t include AM radio. Part of the ad’s text reads asimg follows: For the past 100 years, AM radio has been free for U.S. consumers. “Recently, General Motors and other car manufacturers have spent over $7 million trying to eliminate AM radio. Do not buy a car without AM radio. GM is attempting to influence Congress, making themselves an adversary to consumers. We will publish a list of all House and Senate members who have received money from these lobbyists. Keep AM radio free.”

FCC Seeks Public Comments on Deregulation

In a Public Notice titled, “Delete, Delete, Delete,” The Federal Communications Commission says it is “taking action to promote the policies outlined by President Trump…” and are “seeking public input on identifying FCC rules for the purpose of alleviating unnecessary regulatory burdens. We seek comment on deregulatory initiatives that would facilitate and encourage American firms’ investment in modernizing theirimg networks, developing infrastructure, and offering innovative and advanced capabilities.” The Notice goes on to say, “The Communications Act directs the FCC to regularly review its rules to identify and eliminate those that are unnecessary in light of current circumstances, recognizing that in addition to imposing unnecessary burdens, unnecessary rules may stand in the way of deployment, expansion, competition, and technological innovation in communications that the Commission is directed to advance. Government-wide administrative law requires review of rules to ensure that unnecessary—or affirmatively detrimental—rules are not retained.” The public comment period runs through April 15 and the Commission encourages “commenters to consider certain policy factors including cost-benefit considerations, marketplace and technological changes, barrier to entry, and more, as well as statutory and regulatory retrospective review standards.” Read the complete Public Notice here.

WWO: AM/FM Reach Dominates Ad-Supported Digital Audio

This week’s Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group blog addresses the effectiveness of advertising on AM/FM radio versus ad-supported digital audio using data from Edison Research’s ongoing Share of Ear study. The gist of the post is that equating AM/FM radio reach with ad-supported digital audioimg is a mistake. Some of the findings include: 1) In a typical day, ad-supported digital audio reaches less than a third of America while AM/FM radio reaches two-thirds of America. Combined, ad-supported digital audio and AM/FM radio reach 74% of the U.S. daily; 2) Between ad-supported Spotify and AM/FM radio, most people only listen to AM/FM radio; 3) Between ad-supported Pandora and AM/FM radio, most people only listen to AM/FM radio; 4) The U.S. ad-supported audio clock: Podcasts and AM/FM radio represent nearly 90% of tuning minutes; 5) With a towering in-car share of 86%, AM/FM radio is the primary way to reach consumers on the path to purchase; The proportion of AM/FM radio in-car listening has surged, returning to pre-pandemic norms. KNBR Re-Ups Host Brian Murphy

Cumulus Media’s San Francisco sports talk outlet KNBR is reportedly extending morning sports talk host Brian Murphy’s deal for another four years. SFGate reports that KNBR program director Mike Hohlerimg announced the news on-air on Tuesday. Murphy is one half of the “Murph and Markus” show. Murphy tells SFGate, “I’ve just really enjoyed my time talking to the Bay Area every morning and talking to my partners – whether it was Paulie Mac or my original partner Tim Liotta or my current partner Markus Boucher. Always enjoyed it, enjoyed the banter with our producers and board ops. Newsmax Announces Initial Public Offering

Newsmax Inc announces the launch of its initial public offering, inviting investors nationwide to become shareholders in its television and digital media platforms. Last week the company’s Offering Statement was qualified by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Newsmax is looking to raise up to $75 millionimg with a planned March 31, 2025 listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol NMAX, subject to NYSE approval. This IPO comes shortly after it completed a private Preferred Offering in February raising $225 million. Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy says, “Our success with our Preferred raise shows the enormous support our company has as we made thousands of Americans part owners in Newsmax. Now, the initial public offering opens the door for tens of thousands more to join our news revolution and be a part of the first ever company to complete a crowd financed offering on to the main board of the NYSE.”

The Last Show Expands to Six Canadian Markets

New York City-based comic and former Silicon Valley engineer David Cooper strikes a deal to get his talk show, “The Last Show with David Cooper” on six Canadian signals: CKNW, Vancouver; CFIQ, Toronto;img CHQR, Calgary; CHED, Edmonton; CJOB Winnipeg; and CFPL, London. Cooper is focusing on Canadian markets because he was born in Toronto and was heard in Canada on the iHeartRadio talk network. Cooper says, “It’s what happens when you mix relationship advice, scientific breakthroughs, and the world’s weirdest headlines into one show. Somehow, it all makes sense.” Cooper says the show targets the 25-54 demographic. He also serves as technical director and host at Burning Man Radio during his annual Nevada festival pilgrimage. He adds, “What do I know? Talk radio programmers call it a strategic counterprogramming solution, designed to capture audiences from alt-rock or NPR stations.”

“790 The Score” Expands Coverage of Rhode Island FC

Cumulus Media and Major League Soccer’s Rhode Island FC are continuing their partnership and announcing that sports talk WPRV, Providence “790 The Score” is expanding its coverage of the club’s season. WPRV will air live-action coverage of all 17 RIFC away games and the first home game.img Broadcasting the matches will be WPRO-FM personalities Nick Giuliano and Tommy Quinlan. In addition, Rhode Island sportswriter and columnist Kevin McNamara will host a new feature to air on the station every Thursday at 6:20 pm throughout the season titled, “Extra Time with Rhode Island FC.” Cumulus RVP and market manager Holly Paras says, “We are thrilled to continue and expand our broadcast partnership with Rhode Island FC. Hillsdale College Student Wins First Place Honors at IBSNYC 2025

Among the winners of the college awards given out at the IBSNYC 2025 conference last weekend (of which TALKERS was a participating sponsor), was Hillsdale College junior Emily Schutte. She takesimg home first place for Best Newscast.  in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System College Media Awards. Winners were announced on March 8 in New York City. WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM general manager Scot Bertram says, “I’m proud of Emily and all of our WRFH students for their work. There were thousands of submissions from college stations across the country, and it is exciting to see one of our students accept top honors in a very important category.” WRFH had finalists in eight categories. Monday Memo: ChatGPT, Carefully

imgObservation, as a heavy CNBC viewer: Artificial Intelligence is to 2025 what Dot Com was to the late 1990s, game-changer… and shiny object.

Everyone seemed to be chanting “AI” at this year’s CES. In a previous column here, I offered, from experience, some Do’s-and-Don’ts for crafting commercial copy. And as vendors are applying AI to various other broadcast content and operational functions, I asked the app itself: “How would you caution radio broadcasters against over-reliance on ChatGPT?” SECONDS later, the robot replied:

“Here are some key points to consider:

1. Maintain Authenticity: Radio broadcasting thrives on the personality and authenticity of its hosts. Relying too heavily on AI-generated scripts or content can make broadcasts feel robotic, inauthentic, or detached. Listeners tune in to hear the voice, opinions, and personality of the broadcaster, not just information being read off a script. ChatGPT is great for generating ideas, but it shouldn’t replace the genuine voice of the host.

2. Human Connection: One of the strengths of radio is the personal connection that hosts build with their audience. This connection comes from spontaneous moments, personal anecdotes, and relatable conversations. AI can’t replicate the unique, emotional bond that a human broadcaster forms with listeners. Overusing AI could distance the host from the audience and make the show feel more like a recorded message than a live, engaging experience.

3. Accuracy and Fact-Checking: While ChatGPT can generate a lot of information quickly, it’s not always accurate or up-to-date. Broadcasters need to be mindful that AI-generated content might contain errors, outdated facts, or biased perspectives. Relying on AI without fact-checking could lead to broadcasting misinformation, which can seriously damage the station’s credibility.

4. Tone and Nuance: AI like ChatGPT can struggle with tone, emotion, and subtlety in language. Radio broadcasters need to ensure that the tone of the broadcast fits the subject matter and the audience. AI might miss the mark on this, especially in more nuanced or sensitive topics. A human touch is often needed to tailor the message effectively.

5. Audience Engagement: ChatGPT can provide content, but it can’t engage with listeners the way a broadcaster can. Over-relying on AI could take away opportunities for live interaction, audience call-ins, and real-time feedback. Broadcasting is about creating a dialogue, not just delivering information, and AI isn’t capable of fostering real-time, dynamic conversations.

6. Creativity and Innovation: While AI can assist with generating ideas, true creativity comes from the human mind. Broadcasters should focus on bringing fresh, original ideas to the table—things AI can’t easily replicate. Over-relying on ChatGPT might limit creativity, turning broadcasts into predictable, generic experiences.

In summary, while AI tools like ChatGPT can be incredibly useful for research, inspiration, and content generation, broadcasters should ensure they don’t lose the human element of their shows. Maintaining authenticity, personal engagement, and creativity are key to keeping radio content fresh and compelling. AI should be a tool, not a substitute for the broadcaster’s unique voice and connection with the audience.”

On Thursday (3/6), Audacy made the staff reduction that affects people across all departments – corporate, on-air, and off-air. An Audacy spokesperson issued the following statement: “Audacy has made workforceimg reductions to ensure a strong and resilient future for the business. Nielsen: More Than 36 Million Watch Trump Address Congress

According to data from Nielsen, an estimated 36.6 million people watched President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday (3/4). Nielsen says that viewership peaked from 9:45img pm to 10:00 pm ET with 37,895,000 viewers across the 15 networks that televised the address. This year’s audience was up over 13% compared with the 32.2 million viewers that watched President Biden’s State of the Union address in 2024. Breaking down Tuesday’s audience by age, 5.7% of viewers were aged 18-34; 20.5% of viewers were aged 35-54; and 70.7% of viewers were aged 55 and older.

Edison: Most Podcast Listening Happens at Home

Edison Research reveals that, according to data from its ongoing Share of Ear study, the majority of podcast listening does not take place in the car. Edison says, “At-home listening accounts for an impressive 67% of total daily podcast consumption time according to the most recent Share of Ear. Besides the reality thatimg people spend by far the most amount of their time at home, the at-home environment offers a variety of listening devices including smart speakers, internet-connected TVs, and computers, in addition to mobile phones… And we know from our qualitative research that podcast listeners can listen while they multitask at home.” After listening at home, listening at work contributes 16% to the overall daily listening time to podcasts, while in-car listening captures 11% of daily listening time. Edison adds, “We can theorize that because people often take short drives during the day including quick trips to the store, or school, or on errands, that those short trips might not be conducive to becoming fully engaged with a podcast.” Finally, 6% of listening happens in various other locations, such as gyms, grocery stores, or while walking.

New Vince Coglianese Show Replaces WWO’s Dan Bongino Show

Cumulus Media announces that current WMAL-FM, Washington, DC afternoon drive host Vince Coglianese is taking over as host of the Westwood One nationally syndicated 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm program currently hosted by Dan Bongino, who will exit after his March 14 show to become deputy FBI director. The deal includes “The VINCE Show” airing in the early afternoon daypart and the one-hour “VINCE” podcast dropping daily. Silverloch Productions, founded by Dan and Paula Bongino, will produce the VINCE podcast to be distributed by the Cumulus Podcast Network. “The VINCE Show” will launch on Westwood Oneimg with more than 250 affiliate stations. Bay Area Radio Vets Launch Digital Sports Talk Network

A group of Bay Area radio personalities are getting together to launch a digital sports talk network called Bay Area Sports Collective. Former KNBR, San Francisco personalities Tom Tolbert, Paul McCaffrey, and John Lund, along with former KNBR PD Jeremiah Crowe are co-founding the network that will initially feature three podcasts that will also be broadcast live on YouTube. The network debuts today with “The Tom Tolbert Show,” “Paulie Mac’s Particles” and “John Lund Unleashed.” Crowe will direct business operations, marketing, and sales for the sports podcast network. Additionally, the new podcast network features daily on and off-air contributions from Tony Rhein and Daniel Ogden, both longtime Bay Area radio producers. Crowe says, “This announcement marks the dawn of a new day for the underserved Bay Area Sports fan. They deserve better. We are thrilled to launch The Bay Area Sports Collective with three very influential, entertaining, and experienced hosts who all remain dedicated to their craft. The Broadcasters Foundation of America announces that Katz Media Group has raised more than $47,000 during its 13th annual companywide membership drive. This year’s generous contribution brings the total amount raised by Katz to nearly $500,000 since the drive’s inception. Every dollar raised directly supports the Stu Olds Memorial Fund, which commemorates Katz’s former CEO and aids broadcasters and theirimg families during life’s most challenging moments. Broadcasters Foundation of America president Tim McCarthy says, “For over 70 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has provided critical aid—ranging from medical care to emergency financial assistance—for broadcasters facing hard times. The steadfast generosity of Katz Media Group makes it possible for us to continue our mission, and I can’t thank the Katz team enough for their ongoing commitment.” Katz Media Group has been selected to receive the 2025 Philip J. Lombardo Spirit Award, which will be presented at the BFOA Golden Mic Gala on March 10. This prestigious honor recognizes Katz’s dedication to supporting the Broadcasters Foundation of America and its mission of helping broadcasters in need.
