Beasley Hits Pause: Extends the “Note” Worthy Exchange Deadline. Beasley Broadcast Group Inc. has extended the deadlines for its exchange offer, tender offer, and new notes offering to October 4, 2024, at 5:00 pm ET , with the settlement date moved to October 8, 2024. This extension follows a request from key holders of the company’s existing 8.625% Senior Secured Notes due in 2026 to adjust their participation in the offers. As of yesterday (9/30), about 93% of the outstanding notes were submitted for exchange or tender. The offers are detailed in the Exchange Offer Memorandum and its supplements, available to existing note-holders. The company emphasizes that this announcement does not constitute an offer to buy or sell any securities, and only eligible institutional buyers can participate. The extension aims to finalize changes to existing holders’ participation without altering the total number of notes tendered or exchanged.

CNN: Local Broadcasters Become Lifeline for Hard-hit North Carolina Communities in Wake of Helene’s Wrath

An article by reporter Brian Stelter published by CNN today provides an in-depth look at local radio’s rising to the need of providing listeners in western North Carolina with lifeline information in the wake of watery devastation inflicted upon the region by Hurricane Helene. One caller was trying to find her brother. Another was asking about evacuation routes. A third was wondering if another tropical storm was on the way. And many callers expressed the same sentiment: “I’m just so proud of my neighbors.” All of the calls were broadcast live Sunday (9/29) across western North Carolina on a patchwork of local radio stations as the region struggled to recover from Helene’s unrelenting floodwaters. The calls and emails to News Radio 570 WWNC, an AM station owned by iHeartMedia, reflected the still unfolding crisis as the waters recede. A listener named Paul called into the switchboard on Sunday to ask if a nearby dam was failing. “People are freaking out right now,” Paul said, citing recent reports of concerns about the structural integrity of other dams. The radio hosts reassured Paul and the listening public that the dam rumors were “misinformation.” As communications across the region remained severed for many, the voices on the radio became a lifeline for locals in dire need of reliable information; sharing updates on road closures; opening the phone lines to anyone with working wireless or landline phones; and reassuring listeners that help is on the way from government organizations and volunteer groups. WWNC, the oldest station broadcasting in western North Carolina, and six other stations owned by iHeart came together to simulcast their coverage of the weather emergency, host Mark Starling told CNN during his marathon live broadcast. He signed off Sunday at 11:00 pm and started again Monday at 6:00 in the morning. “Please,” he said to listeners shortly after sunrise, “please take care of yourselves. As listener attention and advertising dollars continue to go-digital, stations now sell more than spots, to monetize advertiser demand that will otherwise be satisfied by other vendors. With you or without you, local retailers need/want to be seen.

Many local businesses are already on YouTube. And whether their video is polished or embarrassingly amateurish, they crave traffic. Stacks of research demonstrate that NO other companion medium drives online traffic better than radio. We train station reps to ask prospects with online assets: “Unless we tell our listeners, how will they know it’s there?” And if your station web site is content-rich and properly promoted, your traffic runs rings around theirs.

Low-hanging fruit: Local service retailers, explaining. Example: A bicycle shop demonstrates how to change a flat tire. Doing so identifies the business as helpful and helps sell spare tires and patch kits. One video I saw so thoroughly explained the process that it left me thinking I’d let them do it! 😉

How-to-do-something videos are among YouTube’s most-watched. Second-only to entertaining videos. Tips, based on what’s up at stations I work with, and sources cited:

• Keep ‘em short, based on viewing data which demonstrates that people stop watching after two minutes, if they watch that long (the first five seconds is critical). And so, you can sell the advertiser a series of videos.

• From YouTube Marketing by QuickStudy.com: Create videos that solve [the advertiser’s] customers’ problems. Each video should address one concern, narrowly focused on one problem end users face and how to overcome it. Doing a series invites viewers back to see that series of episodes.

• Depict advertisers demonstrating their expertise, so consumers are confident that your client is the right choice; and to personalize the business.

• Use keywords that the viewers you want would likely search, in your self-explanatory title (“How to change a flat bicycle tire”) and in the video’s Description and Tags.

• Early in your YouTube Description copy, include a link to more information, i.e., “Step-by-step instructions: example.com/flat.pdf”

• Research from Kinetic: More than half of viewers watch without sound. So, consider how you can get your message across without it.

FCC Approves Audacy’s Post-Bankruptcy Vote In Split Vote. According to a report this morning (9/30) by Adam Jacobson in Radio+Television Business Report, the FCC, as expected, has approved of Audacy Inc.’s plan to emerge from debtor-in-possession status – a move that makes Soros Fund Management the controlling interest holder in the audio content creation and distribution company founded by the Field family. While the release of the Commission’s Memorandum Opinion and Order came early Monday, it was adopted in a divisive 3-2 vote on September 18, with Republicans Brendan Carr and Nate Simington vociferously disapproving the deal over Soros’ ties to liberal and Democratic causes. Timing of the Memorandum Opinion and Order’s release comes as Audacy’s Debtor-in-Possession Forbearance Agreement was scheduled to expire today, after an extension granted by Houston-based U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in mid-August. Lopez approved all of the necessary paperwork to allow Audacy Inc. to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 20.

Dave Krieger Joins Forces with LibertyNewsRadio.com. Hundreds Gather for RI Radio-TV Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

More than 320 broadcasters from the vibrant Rhode Island radio and television industries turned out last night (9/25) in celebration of the state’s industry Hall of Fame inductions at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, RI. Six members of the state’s broadcasting community were inducted including Betty-Jo Cugini of WERI/WRX Radio/WLNE-TV/WJAR-TV; Chris DiPaola of WBLQ-AM Radio (posthumously); Joe Hassett, color commentator Providence College Basketball; Dan Yorke of WPRO-AM Radio/WPRI-TV; Paul Zangari of WEAN-AM Radio/RI PBS/ WPRO-AM Radio; and Sean Daly, WLNE-TV/WPRI-TV. An emotional high-point of the ceremony took place when the late Chris DiPaola was inducted as the inaugural recipient of the Ron St. Pierre Radio Innovator Award – named after the late RI radio legend who passed away earlier this year. The award was accepted by DiPaola’s father and son. TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison attended the event, noting, “Last night’s beautiful gathering was a reminder that local radio and television are very much alive and well in Rhode Island. There were laughs, tears, pride, camaraderie, and an abundance of good vibes. It was inspirational!”

Thirty Year Media Personality “Al Levine on the Scene” Joins NCC’s WHPC Radio on Long Island

Kevin Washington Rises to Operations Manager Alpha Media-Dayton. Effective 10/1, Kevin Washington has been named operations manager for Alpha Media’s five Dayton, OH stations (WDHT-FM, WROU-FM, WGTZ-FM, WCLI-FM and sports talk, WING-AM). Washington has 20+ years of experience with Alpha Dayton and most recently held the position of APD/promotions director. Bob Longo to Retire as VP/GM of Cox Media Group TV – Jacksonville. After 35 years of service and leadership in local broadcasting, Bob Longo is retiring as VP/GM of Cox Media Group (CMG) TV – Jacksonville (WJAX-TV and Hoffman Communication’s WFOX-TV), effective Dec. 31. Longo’s career has deep roots in journalism. He started in radio as a reporter, anchor, news director, and talk host before moving to TV as a reporter and anchor, executive producer, and news director. He led newsrooms in Binghamton, Buffalo, Hartford, Pittsburgh, Orlando, and Jacksonville. He joined CMG in 2014 and was promoted to VP/GM in 2017. “Bob has been successful at every stop because he’s a personable and engaged leader with an unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence and financial performance,” said Dan York, CMG’s president/CEO. “He’s consistently brought passion to serving his local communities and has been an ardent advocate for the value of local news and investigative journalism. FOX News Media to Simulcast CBS’ Vice Presidential Debate. The podcast publishing arm of iHeartMedia and Radio Ambulante Studios (RAS), a pioneering Spanish-language podcast production company that tells the stories of Latin America and Latino communities around the world, announced a deal that will bring RAS and its full slate of shows to iHeart’s My Cultura Podcast Network. As part of the deal, Radio Ambulante Studios’ flagship, award-winning podcast “Radio Ambulante” along with its groundbreaking weekly news show “El Hilo” and its anthology docuseries “Central” will now be distributed by iHeartPodcasts as part of My Cultura, iHeartMedia’s podcast network dedicated to elevating Latinx voices and stories. Under the new partnership, the two companies will also develop and co-produce a minimum of two new shows over the next two years.

Newsmax Wins Major Ruling in Smartmatic Case

The Superior Court of Delaware ruled yesterday (9/23) that Smartmatic will not be eligible for punitive damages in its defamation case against Newsmax. This is a major ruling in favor of Newsmax.

The Court ruled that since Newsmax had never engaged in express malice – meaning it never intended to harm Smartmatic – the voting company could not claim punitive damages. Yesterday’s ruling means that to recover any damages Smartmatic will have to prove to a jury that Newsmax’s coverage caused Smartmatic actual losses. Sources at Newsmax tell TALKERS, “Newsmax’s reporting did not cause Smartmatic damages and after extensive discovery Smartmatic has offered no evidence of such claimed damages.” According to Newsmax, the multimedia platform covered both sides of the dispute in the aftermath of the 2020 election and that the Smartmatic suit against Newsmax “threatens freedom of speech and freedom of press.”

At a rally in Indiana, PA yesterday (9/23) former President Donald Trump, working largely impromptu without a teleprompter, wandered off whatever script he was working with and took a shot at the FOX News Channel that should raise a few eyebrows across the talk media industry regardless of political position. After complaining about FOX’s practice of having some guests or sources on that are not pro-MAGA, which itself is a breach of journalistic boundaries, he stated, “You ever notice on FOX… they put me on… I do a great job… and then they follow me with a horrible commercial? I say what the hell is the good of me doing it. Roger Ailes never allowed bad commercials. What’s the purpose of me doing a nice show and they put nine horrible commercials on which are all lies.”

Premiere Adds Michael DelGiorno to National Lineup

Meantime: Plan for an early-October topic parents will appreciate: Halloween costume ideas. With family budgets tight now, those pop-up costume stores are less affordable to some. And as listeners are now coping, many are imagination-challenged. Back when we “went to the movies,” characters like Harry Potter were more obvious. And with campaign fatigue mounting, non-political costumes offer respite.

In years past, this has been a welcome call-in topic. And inviting listener snapshots of previous years’ costumes – possibly offering a prize for Best – can bring clicks to your web site. Sell a sponsorship, possibly to the big local liquor-warehouse store.

Legendary Phoenix Suns PBP Announcer Al McCoy Passes Away at 91

Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor member and legendary radio play-by-play announcer Al McCoy has passed away peacefully at the age of 91. The longest tenured team broadcaster in NBA history, McCoy was widely known as the “dean of NBA broadcasters” for his years of service and unique broadcasting style. He served 51 seasons as “The Voice of the Suns,” calling his first game on September 27, 1972 and his last on May 11, 2023. McCoy’s unforgettable calls of the most memorable moments in Suns history, including three trips to the NBA Finals, and his trademark phrases from “Shazam!” to “Zing Go the Strings” to “Heartbreak Hotel” have cemented his legacy throughout Arizona and the NBA. His distinctive voice, vivid descriptions and deep knowledge of the game created a unique style that remained a staple for more than five decades. McCoy will long be known as the Voice of the Phoenix Suns. His many contributions to basketball and sports broadcasting were recognized when he received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. The first play-by-play announcer inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004 and a 2009 inductee into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, McCoy earned the team’s highest honor when he became the 15th person inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor in 2017. Funeral services are pending.
