Podtrac Releases June’s Top Podcasts, Podcast Publishers

PODTRAC LogoAccording to Podtrac’s latest stats, the average U.S. “Unique Monthly Audience” for the Top 20 publishers dipped 3% month-to-month, but improved by that same percentage compared to June 2022. “Total Global Downloads” for the Top 20 publishers remained steady month-to-month; however, it declined 3% versus this time last year. The combined audience for the Top Sales Networks was up 5% month-to-month. The top ten podcasts by US Unique Monthly Audience (June 2023) are: “The Daily” (New York Times); “Dateline NBC” (NBC News); “Morbid” (Wondery); “Up First” (NPR); “NPR News Now” (NPR); “SmartLess” (Wonderly); “The Ben Shapiro Show” (Daily Wire); “Stuff You Should Know” (iHeartPodcasts); “Pardon My Take” (Barstool Sports); and “The Dan Bongino Show” (Dan Borgino). With a US “Unique Monthly Audience” of 31,625,000 (and 833 active shows), iHeartPodcasts is the top podcast publisher. Simon Says Happy 4th

Each Independence Day, Simon Conway organizes a truly unique trip for his listeners. It’s on that special day that the afternoon drive talent on iHeartMedia Des Moines news/talk WHO “News Radio 1040” broadcasts his show from the deck of the historic Battleship Iowa – BB61. The fifty listeners (pictured below) who came on what Simon labels the “Freedom Tour” witnessed him fire five-inch guns in celebration of America’s birthday. The once in a lifetime celebration continued two days later as it was off to Southern California with the group visiting the famed Reagan Ranch, which Ronald Reagan used as the Western White House. As Conway points out, “You need an invitation to go there as it’s not open to the public. Before he went to Hollywood, President Reagan worked at two stations I broadcast on every day – [Davenport’s] WOC and my flagship station, WHO. We even get to have lunch on Ronnie and Nancy’s front lawn – it’s truly an honor.”

WDET Imports Fox As PD

Having thus far spent his entire broadcasting career north of the border, native Canadian L. Adam Fox relocates to Detroit to program Wayne State University public radio news/talk WDET. He will report to WDET general manager Mary Zatina who states, “Adam’s experience and skills in programming L Adam Fox
are exceptional. He also brings a leadership style that will enhance both staff and listener experiences. WDET is on a fast-track to excellence in all areas; Adam will be steering our sound in a way that fully maximizes the community service we deliver.” Fox comments, “I’m thrilled to be joining the team to support the critical mission of WDET. This station has always been a beacon for me, reflecting the stories and culture of my favorite city in the world, and bringing the news of the world with a Detroit perspective.” For the past ten years, Fox has been program director for Calgary-based National Music Center. Prior to that, he programmed Toronto’s CHRY; was content director for CKUA Radio Network, Alberta; and was station manager of Windsor’s CJAM-FM. Ransomware is Everyone’s Problem

The recent ransomware attack against radio group and media company Townsquare Media may have come as a surprise to some people.  It shouldn’t have.  Ransomware is a huge problem and media companies are increasingly becoming targeted by cybercriminals.

As you undoubtedly know, ransomware is a type of malware that once installed on your company’s computers locks and encrypts your files.  The cybercriminals who use ransomware to attack your company then threaten to destroy your files unless you pay a ransom, generally in cryptocurrencies.  More recently the threat of ransomware has evolved where the cybercriminals also threaten to make public embarrassing information gathered in the hacking of your computers.

Just how big a problem is ransomware?  Worldwide 37,700 ransomware attacks occur every hour.   Part of the reason for there being so many ransomware attacks is that they are perpetrated not only by sophisticated cybercriminals who develop the new strains of ransomware, but also by far less sophisticated criminals who go to the Dark Web, that portion of the internet where criminals buy and sell goods and services, and lease the latest versions of ransomware along with bots to serve as delivery systems for the ransomware.    According to cybersecurity firm Emsisoft, in 2021, the financial impact of ransomware attacks in the United States was 623.7 million dollars.  Also, don’t think if your company is a small to medium sized business that it won’t be targeted by ransomware attacks.  Due to the easy availability of the sophisticated malware and delivery systems required for a ransomware attack, small and medium sized businesses are frequent targets of ransomware attacks.

Media companies are a common target for ransomware attacks with devastating consequences.  In 2017, San Francisco NPR station KQED was hit with a damaging ransomware attack. In 2019, Entercom suffered a major ransomware attack.  In 2021, Cox Media, which owns 57 radio and television stations, fell victim to a ransomware attack.   Also in 2021, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns 185 television stations throughout the country suffered a ransomware attack which cost the company 63 million dollars in lost advertising revenue and 11 million dollars in expenses related to remedying the attack.  And these are just a few of the many ransomware attacks against media companies big and small.

CBS News Radio, Portnoy Parting Ways

Following an eight-and-a half-year run with CBS News Radio, White House correspondent Steven Portnoy is exiting CBS News “for a new opportunity.” He becomes the third CBS News Radio correspondent to depart in less than three months, as Steve Dorsey and Steve Futterman left at the end of April. We noted here yesterday (TALKERS, Monday, 7/10) that CBS News Radio vice president/general manager Craig Swagler is set to leave the company this Friday (7/14). In a memo, CBS News Washington bureau chief Mark Lima and ParamountPodcasting& Audio head Steve Raizes informed staff of Portnoy’s exit writing, “We wish Steve all the best in his future endeavors. We are fortunate to have more than a dozen Washington-based reporters who contribute to CBS News Radio and know that we are in good hands in continuing to bring impactful journalism to our audience now and in the future.” CBS News Washington-based political reporters who will continue to contribute for CBS News Radio include: Robert Costa; Scott McFarlane; Nikole Killion; Weija Jiang; Ed O’Keefe; Nancy Cordes; and, Portnoy joined CBS News Radio in February 2015 as a White House correspondent. In addition to his day-to-day CBS News Radio duties, he was president of the White House Correspondents Association (2021 – 2022).

Nashville Public Radio president/chief executive officer Steve Swenson comments, “Rob brings a wealth of experience and expertise to help us as we continue our rapid growth to expand our public service to Nashville and Middle Tennessee. “The Girlfriends”’ Podcast Debuts

The Girlsfriends PodcastThe first episode of the weekly true crime podcast “The Girlfriends” aired yesterday (Monday, 7/10). It’s a collaboration among iHeartPodcasts; Novel; and NO MORE, a global nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence. NO MORE chief executive officer Pamela Zaballa states, “We are proud to partner with iHeartPodcasts and Novel to raise awareness of domestic violence and help survivors find the support they need. IBF Notes Its Fourth Anniversary

Independent Broadcasters Association LogoCoinciding with the Independent Broadcasters Foundation’s fourth anniversary are new enhancements (including a redesigned website which unveils today) and policies. To more effectively focus on members’ needs, the IBA implements a cap of 300 company members, with no limit on number of stations under a company. According to IBA president/executive director Ron Stone, “These improvements allow the IBA to grow into the best possible organization representing independent radio stations. Future members will have market exclusivity to IBA membership. All current members that share a market will be grandfathered in and are not affected by this change. A group is considered one company. Once we reach the 300-mark, membership will be closed. New members will only be received if the number of member companies drops below 300.” National cash contests will now include text-to-win capability and Stone states, “Participating member stations have experienced as much as 30X ROI from [those contests].” Only IBA member stations can participate in the September National Cash Contest; the deadline for stations and groups to register is in less than three weeks (7/31). An IBA member may be a single station or a group of stations, as long as the company is not traded on a public market.

Owing to a partnership between podcast network Lemonada Media and celebrity chef/humanitarian José Andrés’ JAM Media, the former will manage ad sales and distribution for JAM’s audio content; Andrés’ “Longer Tables” and “Pressure Cooker” will now be part of Lemonada Media’s line-up. Lemonada Media chief executive Lemonada Logoofficer Jessica Cordova Kramer opines that, “When you think of making life suck less, you think [of] chef José Andrés. Survey says, the good news is, 49% of local direct advertisers use AM/FM radio.

The bad news is, the same survey says, 65% of that same group uses social media advertising. Advantage +16% for the digital team. The good news is, you are comfortable selling/managing digital and social media vehicles because like it or not your local advertiser is leaning in on the digital/social media advertising opportunity.

Survey says, more bad news, 54% of the local direct advertiser group is buying event-sponsorships. The good news is, you are comfortable selling/managing event-sponsorships because like it or not your local advertiser is leaning in on the event-sponsorship advertising opportunity.

Now for the closer, survey says, over 50% of these local advertisers are now budgeting only 2% of gross revenues on advertising. Thank you Borrell for the researched eye-opener and thank you pandemic for shrinking the local advertiser’s marketing dollar.

Show of hands, please, anyone reading this totally surprised? The online digital/social media advertising world has been on a double-digit growth tear as long as anyone can remember. The growth continues as AM/FM sellers stand by and watch the parade go by, sorry guys. The facts are… there are roughly 310 million smartphones in the U.S. According to the last Edison survey, 68% of U.S. homes own 1.5 radios. In round numbers 338 million radios at home. Wait, what? Are there almost as many smartphones as AM/FM radios at home? Anyone own more than one smartphone? I thought there was a radio in almost every room in your home. Not anymore, you say? Quite different from the average five radios per household when many reading this column earned their first double digit commission check as a member of that fun loving sales team. The times are a changin’ and I hope you are changing with the times. Let us start here:

Update your value proposition for “Why Radio?” Make it current and relevant to today’s media ecosystem.

Sharpen your new selling skills. Get ahead of the curve and leave your competitors in the dust.

Ask yourself, “What happened?” The numbers of smartphone users are growing. Maybe not as fast as in the past but growing. The number of AM/FM radios in the home is shrinking. Look to your leadership for some answers.

When the trend is NOT your friend, it’s time to think like the great leaders who built our country and media empires, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.”

Monday Memo: Be Known for Knowing

“STIMULATING TALK.”  Like much of radio’s imaging wallpaper, this frayed 1990s promo cliché was station-centric, rather than a benefit statement explaining and assuring how habitual use is… useful.

“Stimulating” was an immeasurable claim. And won’t THEY be the judge of that? If our talkers – of any political stripe – are stimulating, their work speaks for itself.

“Talk” itself has baggage. Say “talk radio” at a backyard cookout populated by non-radio people, and someone will roll their eyes. Rush Limbaugh personified that “crazy uncle at Thanksgiving” who became the format caricature.

imAnd when what’s-talked-about sounds too much like yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that, it works against what ratings people call horizontal maintenance (same-time day-to-day tune-in). No names, but his first six words when I tuned in were “…and it will only get worse!” Stimulating?

Commercial Copy 101: Sell benefits, not features. Almost any station can sound instantly more-user-friendly by simply projecting “you” and “your” early and often in promo copy. “Because ONE traffic jam can jam-up your WHOLE day…”

Swagler Set To Depart CBS News Radio

Craig SwaglerAfter a 22-year run with CBS News Radio, vice president/general manager Craig Swagler will leave the company this Friday (7/14). In an internal memo sent to employees this past Friday (7/7), Swagler stated that he intends to relocate to the Baltimore area to be closer to family. “As such, I have made the hard decision to step away from my role at CBS News Radio. I am incredibly thankful for my time here and all the amazing people I have had the honor to work with at CBS News. There are far too many individuals to name, but I know you all have made the last 22 years one of the most fulfilling parts of my professional journey.” Prior to being elevated to CBS News Radio’s VP/GM, Swagler was a desk assistant; production coordinator; and special events producer. He previously worked at “Saturday Night Live,” ABC Sports, and The MSG Channel.

iHP, Lea Pictures Announce Audio Deal

A multi-year collaboration between iHeartPodcasts and Bradley Cooper’s production company, Lea Pictures, will include several co-produced shows including Lea Pictures’ first audio project “The Good Stuff Podcast,” which debuted last month. Cooper will serve as executive producer for the entire slate which will be distributed by iHeartPodcasts. iHeartMedia Audio Group chief executive officer Conal Byrne comments, “Bradley is one of the great creators of our time, inventing and reinventing again and again how great stories are told across multiple genres and formats. Urban One Files 2022 Q4 and Full Year Operating Results

If you’ve been following this story, you are aware that Urban One is late with this Securities and Exchange Commission filing because of accounting issues related to the valuation of its investment interest in MGM National Harbor, which the company sold for cash proceeds of approximately $136.8 million on April 21, 2023. Re-evaluation of the accounting required adjustment to the company’s filings for the four quarters of 2021 andim Q3 of 2022. For the fourth quarter of 2022, net revenue was approximately $132.6 million, an increase of 1.6% from the same period in 2021. The company reports operating income of approximately $14.3 million for the period, compared to approximately $20.3 million for Q4 of 2021. Broadcast and digital operating income was approximately $47.6 million, an increase of 7.9% from the same period in 2021. Net income was $856,000 compared to approximately $5.3 million in net income for the same period in 2021. The company has yet to file its operating results for Q1 of this year, but its preliminary results from the quarter show same station radio segment revenue up 2.0% on a same station basis.

WTMJ, Milwaukee Announces Show Host Additions

Good Karma Brands makes some changes to the talent hosting its talk shows on news/talk WTMJ, Milwaukee. Sandy Maxx moves from her co-anchor role on the station’s “Wisconsin’s Afternoon News” program to late mornings where she joins talk host Steve Scaffidi on the renamed “WTMJ NOW” show airing from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. At the same time, WTMJ sportscaster Greg Matzek joins the “Wisconsin’sim Afternoon News” program as co-host alongside John Mercure. WTMJ interim market manager Emily Dillinger states, “I am looking forward to fun and lively conversation about the news of the day, what it means and why it matters on ‘WTMJ NOW.’ Both Sandy and Steve are genuinely curious people who also have an infectious energy and the ability to relate to a variety of people, and I’m sure that will resonate with fans across Wisconsin.” Another tweak to the lineup it that “Wisconsin’s Morning News with Vince Vitrano and Erik Bilstad” will now air from 6:00 am to 9:00 am with a local news report at 5:00 am.

iHeartPodcasts to Launch “The Whistleblowers: Inside The Trump Administration”

iHeartMedia announces that its iHeartPodcasts platform is dropping a new podcast series on July 13 titled, “The Whistleblowers: Inside The Trump Administration,” hosted by Miles Taylor. iHeartMedia says, “The Trump Administration was in large part defined by the chaos surrounding it – especially internally. The volatile rotationim of staff often meant instability and near-daily internal leaks to the press. Now, the new iHeartPodcast ‘The Whistleblowers: Inside The Trump Administration,’ co-produced with Best Case and Ark Media, will dive headfirst into the chaos to bring listeners the inside story of the people behind some of the most explosive government revelations in American history.” Taylor is a bestselling author and the former chief of staff of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He first wrote anonymously, but later revealed himself as the author after publishing the #1 bestseller A Warning in 2019.
