SABO SEZ: Now, the Advanced Course

By Walter Sabo

Walter M. Sterling

imgJim Gearhart is a remarkable on-air talent who was the AM drive host on New Jerey 101.5 for 20-plus years. In the 1960’s he was a star on WCBS-AM and WNEW. The illustration is an ad for his 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm show on WNBC circa 1968.

At first glance the ad presents a normal appeal to listen to Jim. Take another look. The message is: “Listen to Jim, he’s back,

img

“AND, you can talk to the biggest stars.”

One-on-one conversation between a listener and a newsmaker was BRAND NEW. All of the WNBC ads at the time stress that listeners could talk directly with celebrities. Listeners had to be “taught” that radio took phone calls!

There are two different types of talk radio cities: legacy cities and expansion cities.

Until the mid-1980s there were approximately 48 full-time talk stations. Their host cities had embraced talk radio since the dawn of radio. Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, Miami. When satellites made it possible for more cities to have a talk station, expansion talk outlets had a serious challenge. A challenge I witnessed at WHBQ, Memphis.

WHBQ was the first telephone talk station in the hometown of Elvis. It was not doing well despite strong talent, signal and RKO money. Very few calls. Focus group participants revealed the answer: “Oh, I can call in? I thought those were actors.” The people of Memphis had never heard a telephone talk station and therefore didn’t know how it “worked.”

WNBC had the same challenge. It was the first TELEPHONE talk station in New York. Dominant WOR was #1 for decades but never took a listener phone call. The ad for Jim sold the innovation that listeners could talk to the radio.

To evolve the format, collectively we desperately need new programming features. Features as compelling as the power of one listener talking one-on-one to a newsmaker.

NAB’s LeGeyt: Now is a “Challenging Time to Be a Broadcast Journalist”

National Association of Broadcasters president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt spoke at The Media Institute’s 2025 Communications Forum yesterday (2/19) and addressed a number of issues including NAB’s belief that the Federal Communications Commission’s broadcast ownership rules need to be modified. However, he also addressed what he called the “elephant in the room.” “This is a challenging time to be a broadcast journalist.img It’s not easy to report on the deluge of information (and misinformation on social media) that is shaping our world. Especially in cutting through polarized rhetoric to find the truth. And yet, there has never been a more critical time to arm Americans with the facts and let them make their own decisions. To fulfill this mission, our newsrooms must be able to report without fear or favor. This isn’t just a constitutionally protected right – it is fundamental to serving our communities. And it’s a right we’ve had to defend time and time again since our country’s founding. Efforts to limit the ability of broadcasters to report the facts hinders the public’s right to know and chills free speech. Americans deserve the full and fair reporting that broadcasters provide and NAB strongly defends our members’ First Amendment rights and their vital role in maintaining an informed public. Our democracy relies on journalists’ ability to report the news without the risk of government retribution. In a media environment flooded with social media misinformation and cable news politicization, this role has never been more important.”

Industry Mourns Death of Radio Legend Gary Stevens (1940 – 2025) at 84

Gary Stevens at WMCA in 1967 (NET photo)

Legendary radio figure, Gary Stevens, passed away on Monday (2/17) in Delray Beach, FL, at the age of 84. Stevens succeeded in a number of phases of the radio business from being a major star DJ on groundbreaking top 40 outlet WMCA, New York in the 60s as one of the iconic “Good Guys” to achieving influence as a radio company manager, program distributor, media investment banker, and station broker (where he profitably rode the consolidation wave). He was known for his innovation in all these fields.  He served as president of Doubleday Broadcasting in the late 70s, investments advisor with Wertheim Schroeder & Co., Inc. in the late 80s and as the head of his own firm, Gary Stevens & Co. in the 90s. During his stellar career, he served on a number of boards at major radio organizations including Saga Communications, where he briefly served as interim chairman upon the death of Ed Christian in 2022, and industry associations including the NAB and RAB.  TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison comments,  “Although Gary Stevens’ accomplishments and influence on the radio industry stretched over more than half a century and was quite profound – kids of my generation, who had the opportunity to grow up in New York during the swingin’ sixties, will always remember him as one of the glorious WMCA Good Guys.  His passing truly marks the end of an era.”

Noted industry historian and video chronicler, Art “Radio’s Best Friend” Vuolo reports to TALKERS, “Gary was the last of the WMCA Good Guys still alive, I took a fantastic B&W film from NYU’s film department that I guess ran on WNET Channel 13 in NY back in 1967 and added titles (a.k.a. supers) so each DJ would be identified and put an opening slate (in color) at the start. Gary Stevens is probably the most prominently featured in this film with some great behind-the-scenes insight as to how top 40 radio was done in America’s top market.  1010 WINS had already bowed out and gone all-news in April of 1965, so it was WMCA and WABC who were dukin’ it out in 1967.  However, in the spring of 1966, WOR-FM was a new tend-setter on FM with rock n’ roll.  Here’s the link (player below) to the amazing film.  Enjoy every second!”

Cumulus/Westwood Studies: Audio Listeners are a Rich Source of In-market Financial Consumers

CumulusSeven consumer studies commissioned by the Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group® over an eight-year period find audio listeners are a rich source of in-market financial consumers and drive significant top and bottom funnel impact. The key findings from the studies are outlined on this week’s blog.

Key takeaways:

• Compared to TV viewers, audio listeners are far more likely own investment assets, to be in the market for financial services, and be interested in the category.
• Despite massive TV spending by financial service marketers, TV viewers exhibit low brand equity for financial service brands and weak interest in the category due to the older skew of TV audiences.
• MRI-Simmons: Heavy podcast and AM/FM radio listeners are the ideal audiences for financial brands as they are more likely to be premium clients willing to pay for financial services.
• Case study #1: MESH Experience: Among consumers with $500K+ of investable assets, heavy AM/FM radio listeners are three times more likely than heavy TV viewers to be in the market for a new or additional financial services company.
• Case study #2: AM/FM radio drives strong growth in top funnel measures such as awareness, favorability, and consideration.
• Case study #3: A MARU/Matchbox study of consumers with $1M+ of investable assets found over a six-month period, an AM/FM radio campaign generated double-digit lifts in most measures of brand equity.
• Case study #4: Heavy AM/FM radio listeners are more likely to be active investors and more engaged with the financial category versus heavy TV viewers.
• Case study #5: Heavy AM/FM radio listeners are +44% more likely to be financial ‘thrivers,’ those who like taking investing risks and agree that investing is important.
• Case study #6: Compared to TV viewers, audio listeners are much more likely to have investments across a broad array of assets classes and more likely to invest in major financial brands.
• Case study #7: Harris Poll Brand Tracker: A Westwood One NFL AM/FM radio campaign generates significant brand equity impact far stronger than among TV viewers.

The broadcast is part of a week of programming at CCP led by Brother Shomari that addresses what the station describes as the “urgent challenges” facing Philadelphia’s Black communities today.

“This convening will serve as a re-catalyzation of our previous mobilization efforts, focused on African Diasporic community building in and around the Philadelphia region, and the important leadership linkages that must be facilitated between our culture, communities and campuses to advance Black life and wellbeing,” Brother Shomari said. “A particular lens of this convening is on the purpose, roles, responsibilities and preparation of Black youth and young adults for this cause.”

According to the station, this gathering is a sequel to WURD Radio’s historic 2015 event, “The Invitation,” which explored the impact of racial shifts in Philadelphia and the critical need for stronger Black leadership. “Race, Manhood and Power” will continue that discussion, focusing on intergenerational strategies for building Black community power.

WDAY-AM, Fargo Sale Overcomes Informal Objection

The proposed sale of news/talk WDAY-AM/K226CL, Fargo, North Dakota from Forum Communications Company to Bakken Beacon Media LLC’s subsidiary Flag Family survived an informal objection from private citizen Leann Wolff. Flag Family has been operating the station for the past four years and when the proposed sale was announced, Wolff filed an objection with the FCC citing social media comments from Flag Family co-owner Scott Hennen about the state of journalism in the U.S., including the statement, “journalism is dead.” Wolff questioned Flag Family’s fitness to operate the station in light of the comments but theimg Commission stated that Hennen was expressing “his own individual opinion on the current state of journalism,” but “even if it was assumed that such an opinion might be expressed on WDAY under BBM’s ownership, that is not a ground for the FCC to deny or withhold consent to the instant assignment.” The Commission further states, “We reject the assertion that Hennen’s social media comments justify a denial of the proposed assignment applications. The Objection does not cite to any provision under the Act or the rules, any cases, or any Commission policy for its argument that Hennen’s social media comments are pertinent to our review of the Applications. We disagree with Wolff’s argument that Hennen’s viewpoint on the state of journalism, as expressed in his social media comments, is in any way relevant to our determination of BBM’s qualifications to hold a license or whether the proposed assignment would serve the public interest. As the Commission has stated, licensees have broad discretion based on their First Amendment right to free speech to choose, in good faith, the programming they believe serves the needs and interests of their communities. Indeed, the Commission does not interfere with the programming decisions of licensees, nor does it consider issues of programming choice when reviewing an application for the assignment or transfer of a broadcast license.”

Today is World Radio Day

img

In an era marked by the dizzying speed of technological innovation and the rapid obsolescence of one shiny new platform after another, the iconic platform of radio is beginning its second century of service as one of the most dependable and widely utilized forms of media in the world. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO Member States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as animg International Day of the United Nations, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD). Each year WRD focuses on a specific theme involving radio that is timely, and important. This year the theme is “Radio and Climate Change.” UNESCO points out: Radio contributes to the achievement of its international objectives by supporting populations through climate disasters such as tropical storms and floods. It helps with the dissemination of fact-based information, listeners’ voices, and dedicated radio shows.

TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison, who served as executive advisor to UNESCO for last year’s installment of WRD (which celebrated the milestone of radio’s 100-year anniversary), states, “World Radio Day gives broadcasters the opportunity to blow their own horns about the enduring value of this mighty platform. It’s a good thing for the industry, its sponsors and, most importantly, its loyal listeners. Let’s all sing the praises of radio today and every day.” To all radio professionals and volunteers, everywhere in the world, UNESCO salutes your daily work and your commitment to our future.

Comrex Launches Hotline Enhanced Audio for Gagl

Gagl
Comrex has released Hotline, a new Gagl offering available for clients located in the United States. Gagl Standard (available since 2023) is an audio subscription service that works in conjunction with Comrex IP audio codecs such as ACCESS or BRIC-Link. It allows up to five remote contributors to connect at the same time using consumer-grade equipment such as laptops and smartphones. They just plug in a headset, click a link, and are connected. ComrexMix-minus is handled internally by Gagl.  Since guests or reporters are using equipment they are already familiar with, Gagl is accessible to everyone. Even if no conferencing is desired, Gagl provides a simple way to bridge the audio from computer and smartphone browsers to Comrex codecs, avoiding the need for a hardware codec in the field.

Gagl Standard is available worldwide for $35 per month or $350 per year.

Gagl + Hotline takes that one step further. In addition to all Gagl Standard features, one guest or contributor can also connect by dialing a 10-digit phone number provided with each Gagl + Hotline subscription. Four additional participants can “Gagl”-in using the standard browser link.  If the Hotline caller uses an AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon cell phone, these calls will sound dramatically improved, with much higher fidelity than a normal phone call. The caller’s HD Voice audio will be presented within the Gagl interface for use on-air. Alternatively, Gagl can be configured to pass Hotline calls directly to your codec for unattended operation.

Gagl + Hotline is available in the United States only for $50 per month or $500 per year.

Providing flexibility for guests who can’t come into the studio was a driving force behind Gagl’s creation following the COVID pandemic. Gagl + Hotline creates even more options for anyone to connect to the studio – whether it be a VIP, a non-technical guest, a reporter with breaking news, or the unexpected drop-in – and have them sound so good that you’d never know they were calling from a cell phone. Gagl + Hotline is simple for contributors to use, and studios get to use a Comrex hardware codec they may already have to stream that high-quality audio with familiar pro-grade audio outputs that integrate into their studio console.  In addition, Comrex has released Gagl Solo, a stripped-down version of Gagl Standard for a single participant to connect to the studio. No paid subscription is required to use Gagl Solo.

WURD Radio Presents “Phenomenal Black Philly Writers – Creating Our Essential Reading List to Survive 2025” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art this Evening (2/7)

WURD
In honor of Black History Month, WURD Radio presents “Phenomenal Black Philly Writers: Creating Our Essential Reading List to Survive 2025,” an evening of critical literary discussion and cultural exploration. This timely and urgent event will take place this evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Learning and Engagement Center at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

WURD Radio (900 AM and 96.1 FM) is the only Black-owned and operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania. Having celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023, over the past two decades WURD has evolved into a multi-media, multi-platform communications company that reaches deeply into the Black community through radio, video, events, digital and social media. It is considered the go-to media channel to engage, interact and connect with Philadelphia’s Black community. Tune in to WURD Radio on 900 AM and 96.1 FM.

According to the station, this event is in response to a time of extreme anti-intellectualism, the attempted erasure of Black history and identity, and the persistent denial of systemic racial inequality. By focusing on the art of writing as a political act, this event seeks to highlight the critical role of Black writers in shaping discourse on resilience and, most important, truth. The event will be enhanced by the curation of an essential reading list comprised of titles – fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose — that will be shared with the audience and posted on wurdradio.com.

The evening will begin with a conversation between WURD Radio president and CEO Sara M. Lomax, Jeannine A. Cook of Harriet’s Bookshop, and Sonia Sanchez, a legendary poet, writer and leader in the Black Arts Movement. Following this discussion, WURD Radio host Solomon Jones will moderate a panel featuring Philadelphia writers Lorene Cary, Nancy Gilliam, Tre Johnson and Ursula Rucker, exploring the importance of Black writers politically, historically and spiritually, reaffirming the necessity of their work in today’s climate.  Additionally, event attendees will have the opportunity to experience the ongoing Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibit, “The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure,” which powerfully complements the evening’s themes of representation and cultural storytelling.

SABO SEZ: Surprise Sells

PPM meter measurement accurately reflects how most people listen to the radio. When a station is engaging, they leave the station on. When they are bored, they change the station. Station surfing can happen dozens of times an hour. The diary could not measure typical listener behavior. Diaries were a reflection of recall. No listener, driving at 70 MPH pulled over to write down station changes, they just guessed at their recalled radio behaviors and wrote them down.

The biggest flaw or fraud of both diary and PPM data editing was corrected this week by Nielsen.

• Nielsen/Arbitron has measured radio listening in 15-minute intervals, AQH, since the 1920s.

• The change to three minutes is intended to reflect changing listening habits and attention spans.

• The change is expected to benefit advertisers by increasing the number of people tallied who hear their ads.

• The change is also expected to benefit stations by increasing the number of quarter-hours they receive credit for.

Good news, it’s working. In an analysis of the first week of the new editing technique, ACs and adult music FMs have seen increases in AQH as high a 40%.

• Talk shows have enjoyed jumps of 25-31%

• The new editing strategy amplifies the inherent nature of the Meter: More topics the better. More change, the better.

A serious burden dumped on talk radio was the distorted edict that format consistency is essential to success. It is. And that’s exactly what it means FORMATICS, NOT TOPICS.

“Formatics” cover station ID, branding elements, promo production, audio processing, phone number pitch, service element placement. BUT NOT THE SAME DAMN TOPIC ALL DAY.

The same topic all day is why stations that once had double digit shares, are selling off transmitter land to keep bond holders at bay.

People in social situations who only talk about one thing quickly lose friend and are considered bores. Sure, a few people hang around them all day, but new friends are rare. Do you see similarities to the belief that TALK is high AQH but low cume?  Low cume is a bad, unstable business. The new Nielsen editing rewards with higher AQH but only if content delivers constant surprises.

Consultant Walter Sabo a.k.a. Walter M Sterling has a nightly show “Sterling Every Damn Night” heard on WPHT, Philadelphia 10:00 pm – 1:00 am. His syndicated show, “Sterling On Sunday,” from Talk Media Network, airs Sundays 10:00 pm – 1:00 am ET, and is now in its 10th year of success. He can be reached by email at waltermsterling@gmail.com or Sabowalter@gmail.com. Meet Walter Sabo at GENERATIONS 2025 in NYC on March 8.

Edison Research: The Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. for Q4 2024

imEdison Research announces the Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. based on reach for Q4 2024 among weekly podcast listeners age 13+. The list ranks podcasts based on total audience reach from Edison Podcast Metrics. Interviews were conducted continuously throughout the quarter in English and Spanish. Rankings are based on listening over the full period. All respondents reported listening to podcasts in the last week.

Since Q3 2024, the top four podcasts – “The Joe Rogan Experience,” “Crime Junkie,” “The Daily,” and “Call Her Daddy”have maintained their rankings in that order.

1. The Joe Rogan Experience
2.
Crime Junkie
3.
The Daily
4. Call Her Daddy
5.
This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von (+3 spots)
6. Dateline NBC (+1)
7. SmartLess (-2)
8. Stuff You Should Know (-2)
9. Morbid (+3)
10. Pod Save America (+9)

Top of the charts: “Pod Save America,” hosted by former Obama staffers, makes its debut in the Top 10, no doubt riding the wave of the political news cycle.

After a mid-September launch, “Talk Tuah with Hailey Welch quickly skyrocketed in popularity, debuting at #11. The last episode dropped in mid-December, one day before Welch’s $HAWK crypto debacle and subsequent lawsuit.

In the Top 50 for the first time: The November election likely contributed to several podcasts making their debut in the Top 50 this quarter. “Shawn Ryan Show” appears for the first time at #37, continuing its rise as an interview podcast featuring military veterans, intelligence operatives, and political figures. “The Charlie Kirk Show” breaks in at #49, leveraging Kirk’s influence as the founder of Turning Point USA.

“Candace,” Candace Owens’ independent show, debuts at #45, marking a strong entry following her controversial departure from The Daily Wire in March 2024. Owens launched “Candace” in June 2024 and its rapid rise makes clear her loyal audience followed her to her new venture.

Continued rise of conservative talk: In addition to the conservative talk podcasts making their Top 50 debuts this quarter, several established conservative voices moved higher in the rankings. “The Ben Shapiro Show” climbs from #22 to #14 and “The Megyn Kelly Show” sees a boost from #50 to #27. Meanwhile, “The Matt Walsh Show,” which was last in the Top 50 in Q3 2023, reentered the Top 50 at #45.

The podcast show ranker is derived from data collected continuously during the fourth quarter of 2024, interviewing 5,163 weekly podcast consumers age 13 and older in the U.S. Participants indicate which podcasts they listened to in the past week along with a variety of demographic, psychographic, and purchase-behavior information. This ranker measures reach as a percentage of the weekly podcast listening audience.   For full details, please click here. Edison Podcast Metrics
