TALKERS Exclusive: Why AM Radio Still Matters – And Why Cities Must Step Up to Save It

imgFor most of my life, the sound of an AM signal has been my constant companion. Long before I ever spoke into a microphone professionally, I was the kid hiding under the covers with a transistor radio, slowly turning the dial, discovering voices, ideas, communities, and worlds far beyond my bedroom. AM radio didn’t just shape my career – it shaped who I am.

That’s why, as both a lifelong AM radio listener and a longtime AM broadcaster (77WABC and WNYM-AM “970 The Answer”), I’m introducing legislation in the New York City Council to require that all City-owned and City-contracted vehicles continue to include functioning AM receivers. I’m proud of my work in government, but this one is personal. Because AM radio isn’t just entertainment or nostalgia – it’s infrastructure. It’s public safety. It’s the backbone of our emergency communications system. And it’s in danger.

When Everything Else Fails, AM Radio Doesn’t  

We don’t have to imagine what happens when modern communications collapse. We’ve lived it.

On September 11, 2001, when cell networks jammed almost immediately, millions of New Yorkers turned to AM radio for news, instructions, and reassurance.

In the 2003 Northeast Blackout, AM signals were among the very few communications systems still functioning across multiple states.

During Superstorm Sandy, when much of the region lost power and internet for days, AM remained a critical lifeline for emergency updates, evacuation information, and weather alerts.

These weren’t theoretical scenarios. They were real moments of crisis – and AM radio proved its value every single time.

When the lights go out, AM stays on. When cell networks are overwhelmed, AM cuts through. When the internet fails, AM continues broadcasting. It is the most resilient form of mass communication ever created, and FEMA and the National Weather Service still rely on AM frequencies for a reason: they reach people when nothing else can.

AM Radio Is Still the Soundtrack of America 

Beyond emergencies, AM radio remains woven into the cultural fabric of this country. It’s where Americans talk to each other – about politics, sports, faith, overnight oddities, neighborhood issues, and everything in between. It’s one of the last places where anyone can call in, join the conversation, and be part of a community.

The same AM dial that once carried the voices announcing D-Day, the moon landing, and the gritty street reporting of New York legends still carries the news, opinions, and debates that shape American life today. There is something uniquely democratic about the AM band: it is accessible, unpretentious, inexpensive, and available to everyone.

That’s worth preserving. Especially now, as some automakers – particularly in the electric vehicle space – phase AM radios out of new models, citing interference or cost concerns.

Cities and States Can Lead Where Washington Waits 

Congress is considering the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act,” and I support it wholeheartedly. But federal action can take time. Cities and states can move faster.

New York City’s legislation can be a model:

  • If municipalities require AM receivers in the vehicles they procure…
  • If state governments do the same for their fleets…
  • And if enough jurisdictions stand firm…

Automakers will have no choice but to keep AM radio in every vehicle they sell.

Government can’t – and shouldn’t – tell anyone what to listen to. But we absolutely can ensure that the option to listen still exists. And that, when disaster strikes, the public can rely on a system proven over nearly a century to work under the toughest circumstances imaginable.

The Signal Must Go On 

AM radio isn’t a relic. It’s a lifeline. It’s a civic space. It’s one of the last great mediums that belongs to the people. As someone who owes much of his career – and much of his identity – to those airwaves, I feel a responsibility to protect them.

By acting locally here in New York City, I hope we inspire communities across the country to do the same. If we want the AM dial to be there for the next blackout, the next storm, or the next unthinkable moment, the time to act is now.

Because when everything else goes silent, AM radio still speaks.

And we need to make sure it always will.

Monday Memo: The Power of Pause in Local Radio

imgIn an industry built on speed – breaking news, live liners, commercial deadlines – “pause” can feel like a luxury radio can’t afford. But Kevin Cashman’s The Pause Principle: Step Back to Lead Forward (Wiley) argues the opposite: pausing isn’t weakness, it’s a competitive advantage. For local radio leaders, the message couldn’t be timelier.

Cashman defines pause as the conscious act of stepping back to gain perspective before moving forward. Leaders who constantly react miss opportunities for growth and innovation. Those who pause, he argues, engage with more clarity, creativity, and authenticity.

Think about the daily grind in local radio. The PD is juggling ratings pressure, expense challenges, talent issues, and a half-dozen urgent emails from corporate. The sales manager is chasing month-end, writing copy on deadline, and fielding calls from advertisers. In that swirl, it’s tempting to equate motion with progress. Yet, as Cashman warns, constant motion without reflection leads to burnout, blind spots, and missed chances to connect.

For broadcasters, pause can take many forms:

  • Programming: Instead of cranking out another promo, take time to ask if the message really resonates with the community. What do listeners need from us right now?
  • Sales: Before pitching another rate card, pause to explore the client’s true business challenge. That deeper understanding can unlock bigger, longer-term partnerships.
  • Leadership: In staff meetings, pause to let quieter voices contribute. The next big idea might come from someone who usually doesn’t speak up.

Cashman links pause to authenticity. When leaders slow down enough to be present, they foster trust. In local radio, where credibility is everything, that authenticity builds loyalty with both audiences and advertisers.

He also reminds us that pause is not about inaction. It’s about deliberate action. A well-timed pause before responding to a crisis on-air, before agreeing to a questionable promotion, or before rushing through a strategic decision can be the difference between a misstep and a breakthrough.

For local stations, the takeaway is clear: The pace isn’t going to slow down. The emails will keep coming, the ratings will keep posting, and the deadlines will keep looming. But leaders who carve out moments of pause will not only preserve their sanity – they’ll make better decisions, inspire their teams, and serve their communities more meaningfully.

Pause. Reflect. Then lead forward.

Connoisseur to Sell Bakersfield Cluster

Connoisseur Media enters into an agreement to sell its Bakersfield, California radio stations to local operator Frequency Broadcasting, Inc. The station group includes news/talk KNZR-AM/FM, CHR KLLY-FM, and rhythmic oldies KKBB-FM. This transaction is pending regulatory approvalimg by the FCC and is expected to close early next year. Connoisseur Media says the sale is “another step in the company’s efforts to concentrate on markets where it can execute its successful playbook. It is one element in the strategic plan for the markets acquired in Connoisseur Media’s acquisition of Alpha Media that took place in September.” Connoisseur Media founder and CEO Jeff Warshaw says, “Bakersfield was a market that did not fit into the long-term plans we have for Connoisseur. We looked for a local operator that we felt could devote the time and energy that Bakersfield deserves. We are confident that we have found that in Frequency and the Hill family operation.”

Rich Valdes Exits Westwood One’s “America at Night”; McGraw Milhaven to Assume Host Duties

TALKERS has learned that talk show personality Rich Valdés has exited his position as host ofimgimg Westwood One’s long running, late night program “America at Night,” as of last night’s program (11/13). His replacement will be KTRS, St. Louis morning host McGraw Milhaven, slated to begin on December 1.  Valdes took over the reins of the program in upon the passing of its longtime host Jim Bohannon in October of 2022. Stay tuned for updates and developments as they are available. Milhaven states, “I’m deeply grateful to Westwood One for entrusting me with “America at Night” — a show that builds on a proud tradition of engaging listeners during one of radio’s most meaningful times. Salem Media Group announces that its Salem Radio Network is bringing Kevin McCullough’s “That KEVIN Show” to its daily schedule beginning November 24. It will air in the 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET daypart, taking the place of “The Eric Metaxas Show.”  across SRN stations nationwide.img About his show, McCullough says, “‘That KEVIN Show’ doesn’t whisper opinions – it detonates them. WKZE’s “Voices of Valor” Connects Generations Through Local Radio This Veterans Day

WKZE 98.1 FM, Red Hook, NY is showing how local radio can unite a community through storytelling with “Voices of Valor” — a month-long series honoring Hudson Valley veterans and celebrating the power of service across generations.  Airing throughout November in recognition of Veterans Day, “Voices of Valor features heartfelt, first-person stories from members of Red Hook’s VFW Post 7765, giving listeners a direct connection to the men and women who’ve proudly served their country and community.

Produced by Red Hook High School student Olive Haley (pictured above interviewing local vet, Enrique Flores) and supervised by station staff member and recent SUNY New Paltz graduate Alyssa Sciarrone, “Voices of Valor was recorded at WKZE’s Red Hook studios and blends authentic veteran narratives with the station’s signature AAA / Americana sound. The project highlights how local media, students, and community organizations can come together to preserve local stories while engaging the next generation of broadcasters.

“It’s inspiring to see young, talented storytellers like Olive take up the mantle of local broadcasting,” said Dr. Andy Gladding, WKZE’s new co-owner. “Projects like ‘Voices of Valor show that local radio remains a powerful bridge – connecting young storytellers, community institutions, and listeners through shared experience.”

This initiative also marks a new era for the heritage AAA station – now under new ownership for the first time in 20 years – as WKZE expands its mission to foster hands-on opportunities for students and aspiring broadcasters to engage with local radio. According to station co-owner Katie Gladding, this is just the beginning. “Andy and I want WKZE to be a place for all members of the community to feel welcome to share and connect. WABC’s John Catsimatidis Mulls Moving to Florida

As New York City businesspeople prepare for Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to assume control of the city, some are saying they will re-locate their businesses from New York City for fear of how Mamdani policies will affect their bottom line. Red Apple Media and WABC owner John Catsimatidis is one of those. He is featured in a piece in Forbes in which he says, “I think a lotimg of businesspeople are reducing their exposure to New York City.” He tells Forbes he’s looking for “friendly states.” “The key word is a commonsense place to do business in.” Catsimatidis, whose business interests include Gristedes supermarkets and a controlling share of D’Agostino stores, was irked by Mamdani’s promise of opening “cheap city-run grocery stores” in each of the boroughs. Catsimatidis tells Forbes, “‘We don’t have any profit margins,’ he says, explaining that his stores have been losing money for ‘at least two years.’ He blames the state of the city: ‘Shoplifting is up to an all-time high. A lot of stuff is being closed up, which means that it’s not easy for people to shop, so sales are down.’” Catsimatidis does not talk about his radio businesses in the article but given how much effort he’s put into covering local New York news and his hiring local talk hosts and journalists, it’s hard to imagine him running the radio stations from another state such as Florida. Erick Erickson Joins AJC as Opinion Contributor

Nationally syndicated talk radio host Erick Erickson has begun writing opinion pieces for Theimg Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  The Compass Media Networks host is heard in Atlanta on Cox Media Group’s WSB-AM/WSBB-FM. His first piece was printed in September in the wake of the slaying of Charlie Kirk. His latest column is titled, “Democrats are hungry, Republicans complacent and all politics is national,” and you can read that here.

Premiere Networks nationally syndicated talk host Clay Travis is offering $100,000 to any male soccer player who can say he identifies as female and makes a women’s pro soccer team. This comes on the heels of the controversy generated by the disagreement between Angel City Football Club players Elizabeth Eddy – who penned an op-ed calling for a gender eligibilityimg policy in the National Women’s Soccer League and teammates Sarah Gorden and Angelina Anderson who strenuously object to the idea. Travis – co-host of The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show – said on the program, “If you are a male soccer player, and you are listening to us right now, D1, I would encourage you to go to open tryouts. If you make a women’s soccer team or they ban you – just say you identify as a woman – if you make a women’s soccer team, I’ll pay you 100 grand. Challenge out there for every man listening to us right now. I want one of you out there to try to make a women’s pro soccer team – just tell them if they question you, ‘hey, I identify as a woman,’ and I want you to make the team because if they don’t have this rule in place, it would be transphobic for them to stop you from being able to become a male identifying as a woman professional athlete. And I think you might be able to score fifty goals in a year and maybe this is what needs to happen in the National Women’s Soccer League.”

Audacy: All-News Ratings Are Up as People Seek “Established Credibility & Trust”

Audacy SVP, research & insights Ray Borelli writes that “with nearly two-thirds of U.S. households now either cord-cutters or cord-nevers, accessing credible and trusted local news is harder today than ever before.” He adds, “Furthermore, distrust in social media is likely fueling aimg 16% year-over-year decline in the percentage of Americans who say they get their news ‘often’ from apps like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X.2. In this rapidly changing landscape, consumers are increasingly turning to All News Radio for local news, trusted voices, and fact-based reporting.” Borelli cites as evidence for this Nielsen data indicating that Audacy all-news stations are up 11% versus last year and adds that’s coming off a presidential election year. Ben Mevorach is vice president of news at WINS, New York and he says, “As the number of places to get news continues to grow, the number of places to find news that is credible, trustworthy, and without bias is rapidly shrinking. Report: Curtis Sliwa Angrily Quits WABC

According to the New York Post, WABC talk radio host Curtis Sliwa – currently a Republican candidate for mayor of New York City – fumed on the station’s morning show with Sid Rosenberg that he will never be seen in the studios of WABC again after station owner Johnimg Catsimatidis and others urged him to exit the mayoral race to give former Governor Andrew Cuomo a better chance of beating Democrat Zohran Mamdani. During his on-air conversation with Rosenberg, Sliwa “accused colleagues of betraying him” and he told Rosenberg WABC is “giving preferable treatment” to Cuomo. Catsimatidis later told the Post, “Regardless of all the news going around, I’ve always said great things about Curtis Sliwa, about how well he knows the city. But in a places like New York City where 70% of New York City are Democrats, the real Democrat is Andrew Cuomo, not Zohran Mamdani and Democrats should vote for Cuomo. Catsimatidis added, “I’ve never asked that he leave the race but recommended that a lot of other people have said he should.” Sliwa said on the air that he’s had to hire private security due to threats against him and his wife. “If anything happens to me or anything happens to my wife, because of this frenzy that I hear constantly coming from some of your colleagues there at WABC, it’s on you guys and you gals. Joe Rogan Remains Atop Edison’s U.S. Q3 Podcast Ranker

Edison Research releases its Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. ranker based on reach for Q3 2025 among weekly podcast consumers ages 13+ based on total audience reach from Edisonimg Podcast Metrics. “The Joe Rogan Experience” again claims the #1 spot, followed by audiochuck’s “Crime Junkie” at #2, and The New York Times’ “The Daily” at #3. Other shows with news/talk radio and cable ties include: “The Charlie Kirk Show” rising 32 places to #17 following his slaying (new episodes are still being produced); “The Tucker Carlson Show” ranked #18; SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show” followed at #19; and Ramsey Network’s “The Ramsey Show” ranked #29.

KFI, Los Angeles Talk Host Mo’ Kelly Out in iHeart RIFs

The Los Angeles Daily News reports that as the nationwide reduction in force taking place at iHeartMedia is claiming evening talk host Mo’ Kelly, his producer Tawala Sharp, and station imaging director Clay Roe. Columnist Richard Wagoner writes that in initial reports, ratings had been cited as the cause for the changes but says he doesn’t believe that to be the case. “Rather,img it appears that allowing the former programmer to resign, firing half the news department, and pulling back on advertising and marketing didn’t work the ratings magic they originally had hoped for. In my opinion, KFI has seemed rudderless since Robin Bertolucci left the programming spot last November. The current programmer Brian Long, meanwhile, is also in charge of KLAC (570 AM) and KEIB (1150 AM), but with no time, a limited budget, and a decimated news department, the result is what it is. I don’t blame him at all. For his part, O’Kelly is keeping it positive, posting on Facebook, ‘All jobs end. It is not our lives or our health. Perspective is paramount. Salem Amidst Companywide Reduction in Force

Last week, Salem Media Group began a round of companywide layoffs that include staffers at radio stations across the country. KLUP-AM, San Antonio program director Barry Besse isimg among those exiting the company and he posted to Facebook: “After 15 years at Salem Media San Antonio and a total of 17 years with Salem as a company I was a part of a massive companywide reduction in workforce. Over the years Salem has tried its best not to have a reduction in workforce but like most corporations it had to happen. I’m not bitter or angry I understand how this business works. I was proud of the work I did for Salem Media Group and even prouder to have worked with the people I did.”
