Monday Memo: Promo Tip

By Holland Cooke
Consultant

Stations offering – and known for – local news, weather, traffic, and other “survival information” will continue to earn a place in the audio jungle the dashboard has become. So, tell ‘em that you tell ‘em, how and when you are useful. Imaging is an owner’s manual for using the station.

im

One caution: Often I hear service promos that include example sound bites, short clips of a newscast or weather or traffic report, either lifted from actual airchecks or mock-ups. Be careful that what’s being described in promos (“BIG backup on I-95 South at…”) can’t be misconstrued as current information.

A Star Is Born!

By Kathy Carr
President, Howie Carr Radio Network (HCRN)

TALKERS EXCLUSIVE

Kathy Carr IDAfter the first White House press briefing by the youngest presidential press secretary in history, the calls, emails and texts keep flowing in to me about Karoline Leavitt.

Even some of my liberal relatives have said, “She sounds very confident and knowledgeable.” That’s because she is, I texted back. Often in this business, people will try to push a young person in front of you. They will tell you, in all sincerity if not total accuracy, that this person is the next big star. In the case of Karoline Leavitt, my client was right.

Karoline LeavittBack in 2022, we were at a client remote, and the owner told me he wanted to introduce us to this young lady who had been a White House aide near the end of Trump’s term. “She is going places,” our client told us.

At age 24, Karoline was running for Congress in the seacoast district of New Hampshire. She was an underdog in the GOP primary to an establishment candidate, as well as a former U.S. senator’s wife. Don’t worry about it, our client told us, Karoline is going to win. When you hear something like that, you try not to roll your eyes, but you are, shall we say, skeptical.

But this time, at a car dealership in Portsmouth, it took about 45 seconds to realize that she had it. She worked the showroom like a seasoned political pro, shaking every hand in the place. She looked me in the eye and shook my hand firmly, but not too firmly. She spoke in complete sentences with no ahhhs or ummms. She didn’t punctuate every sentence with some variation of “like” or “you know.”

Despite being heavily outspent, Karoline handily won the GOP primary against her older, better-financed opponents. I truly felt she was going to defeat the Democrat incumbent. I donated to her campaign more than once.

We were stunned when she did not win. I spoke to her the day after the loss and told her that although it might not seem like it now, everything happens for a reason and that something better is coming. I was just trying to make her feel better, but this time it was true.

Howie Carr

Soon after her defeat, we met for lunch, and I tried to recruit her as a full-time employee for our radio network. She politely declined, but did work for us as a freelancer and fill-in talk show host. (She was great!) At the end of her stint, she took us out to dinner, picked up the check, gave us a bottle of champagne and posted a video on her (very popular) social media promoting Howie’s latest book. We left dinner that night thinking, Karoline is going places.

So, there she was this week at the podium in the Brady Briefing Room in her beautiful magenta jacket and perfect make-up. But this is no dumb blonde. Her poise is beyond impressive, and everyone now realizes she is not just a pretty face. To the briefing she brought no binder, just brains.

Karoline Leavitt

In the winter of 2023, knowing that President Trump was going to run again, we invited her to dinner with us at Mar-A-Lago. Howie made a point of saying hello to POTUS and putting in a good word for the president’s former White House aide. With thumbs up, she posed for a quick photo with President Trump and Howie. She was wearing a jazzy crème and green dress – she always looks like a million bucks!

We are not the sole reason she was hired for the campaign, but we are proud to have played even a small part.

People often ask me what the most rewarding part is about being in the media. Some think it is the money, influence or perks. Those are all great but what a rush it is to see the next big star being born. And her name is Karoline Leavitt.

WHERE MUSIC MEETS TALK: Legendary Air Personality Cousin Brucie Morrow Now Available to Stations Across the Country from Red Apple Music Networks

Cousin Brucie

Red Apple Music Networks, the music radio unit of Red Apple Audio Networks, has expanded its national syndication with one of America’s most popular, trusted, and beloved music radio personalities Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow. “Cousin Brucie‘s Rock & Roll Party” airs live on Saturdays from 6:00-10:00 pm ET and is the second music radio program from the network, whose flagship is the iconic talker 77WABC, New York.

Cousin Brucie has a long and storied career with 77WABC, where he was on the air during the early days of rock ‘n’ roll and introduced fans to The Beatles, Motown, 60s Soul, surf music, and more. He even interviewed The Beatles when they first came to the U.S. in 1964!

Fast forward to 2020… John Catsimatidis purchases 77WABC and brings Cousin Brucie, who had been on SiriusXM, back to radio and his legions of fans. Last year, when Now and Then, a new Beatles song that used AI to fill in John Lennon’s voice, Paul McCartney recorded a personalized message for Cousin Brucie to play on his “Rock & Roll Party.”

“We are giving radio stations across America the opportunity to experience the success we have had with Cousin Brucie in New York,” said Catsimatidis. “Brucie is passionate about his show, the music, and his listeners and that is a large part of why his fans are so loyal.”

Red Apple Music“Cousins, being on radio again, playing the best music, and connecting with listeners is as exciting for me now as it was in 1964,” said Morrow. “The magic of radio, the beauty of theater of the mind is unduplicated. I’m looking forward to the fun we’re going to have on radio stations across America!”

Morrow has 80,000 followers on Facebook where he interacts directly with his listeners throughout the week. Every Saturday, he posts a video to share with fans who his special guest will be that evening. Recent guests included rock ‘n’ roll superstars Ringo Star, Frankie Valli, Darlene Love, Dion DiMucci, Mike Love, and Ronnie Spector.

“The goal with our networks is to deliver top-quality programming and nationally recognizable talent like Cousin Brucie to radio stations across the country,” stated Chad Lopez, president of Red Apple Media and WABC Radio. “Brucie has unparalleled access to the artists who performed the biggest hits of the 50s and 60s, bringing listeners closer to the music they love.”

Morrow is a past recipient of the TALKERS Lifetime Achievement Award and is considered by the publication’s editorial board to be a “talker” as much as a “disc jockey” where he is positioned, as described by Michael Harrison, in a “pop cultural stew at the very nexus of cross-generational history with interviews, storytelling and conversations.” Red Apple Music Networks also syndicates “Sundays with Sinatra with Joe Piscopo.”

MONDAY MEMO: Retire a Sales Kit Cliché

imBy Holland Cooke
Consultant

If it’s not too late for a New Year’s resolution: No more pictures of studio equipment.

Do your sales promotion material and/or your station website and/or social media graphics have a photo of a studio console? A microphone? Towers? Is that supposed to impress prospective advertisers?

im

To them, how-we-do what-we-do is MUCH less interesting than who consumes our work. What does your prospect sell? Show them pictures of people who buy that, our listeners.

Equipment worth showing: Devices people use to consume our work. Depict the target demographic in-car, and interacting with Alexa, and using the station app, and scrolling the station’s Facebook, etc. And, yes, show microphones, in studio shots of local talent, which will distinguish you from robotic competitors.
