RAB, BMI, and Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio, Inc announce that the 15th annual Rising Through the Ranks program is open for applications. It begins on August 1 with one virtual event from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET prior to the participants meeting in person August 8 – 10 in Nashville. As in years past, BMI will offer 20 scholarships for this year’s program. The scholarships will cover the cost of the professional development course, which is geared toward fostering and educating the current and emerging female radio managers in broadcast radio. MIW board president Ruth Presslaff says, “Rising Through the Ranks continues to be a foundational part of the professional development of so many women. It is a transformative experience that MIW is so proud to be part of, along with the RAB and BMI. It’s also a whole lot of fun. Once again, we encourage women to apply for this wonderful opportunity and stay focused on rising through this industry.”

WBUR announces that NPR’s Beijing correspondent Emily Feng is the winner of the 2022 Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize for her “The Black Gate” story that debuted on NPR’s “Up First” podcast. For the story, Feng worked with language rights activist Abduweli Ayup and producer Phoebe Wang to examine China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim groups by following one man’s quest to reunite with his wife and children who’ve been detained by Chinese authorities.

Broadcaster Stephen Trivers Passes at 83

Retired Fairfield Broadcasting president Stephen C. Trivers passed away on Monday (4/10) at 83 after an extended illness. Trivers’ business partner Bill Wertz writes: “He had a remarkable career spanning six decades. He started in Atlanta and worked with a young Bill Drake. His Susquehanna Broadcasting tenure started at WICE-AM in Providence, Rhode Island. That led to a promotion to the company headquarters in York, PA. He led the early FM expansion for the company with stations in Toledo, Cincinnati, Canton, and Indianapolis. He and I worked together in York for three years before starting our own Fairfield Broadcasting Company.” In the 1980s, Trivers and Wertz also partnered in beautiful music format syndicator Kalamusic.

Pending Business: How Would Elon Musk Price Radio?

Theory vs. practice is always a fun exercise. What happens when someone is bold enough to step out and break the mold to achieve their goals? Do you stop and learn, or do you simply stay in your comfort zone and take a pass?

The headline was “Tesla Drops Prices Again” and they beat their quarterly sales goal. Do you drop your prices to make your sales goals? We are not talking about summer specials, weekend paid programming, or sports packages. Tesla made flat-out price reductions to roll the dice on volume, confident in the product and the marketplace to drive volume for the second time this year.

Ever visited a Tesla store? You will be shown a price card. Every time I asked a question, they tapped a keyboard. No real selling, just facts. Let us do a deeper Tesla-style analysis.

 

Why drop prices when you have nearly two-thirds of the EV market? Is it because your competition is gaining on you? Because you will miss your quarterly projections and you don’t like losing? Because an incentive to buy is about to expire (government credit)? Because you are a world class disruptor? Because you know by lowering prices you will own the news cycle? Because there is still room for old school price wars to stimulate demand and distract the competition?

Survey says, all of the above. How about the opposite? What if Tesla’s strategy was like what most of the radio managers and sellers reading this article would do? The “urgency” trigger. “Buy today, because prices will go up on ______.” The radio/audio “urgency” pitch strategy is so predictable – seasonal, political window, a change in management policy, sell-out level. Heck, Teslas are on back order and they still dropped prices. WWED? What would Elon do? Probably fire us via Twitter. Back to earth and our highly competitive radio/audio world. Here are the takeaways.

— Know your competition. My current experience in one of America’s largest radio markets is price strategy IS driving volume and helping a great radio station make goals. The higher-rated competitor is standing still as the business shifts.

— You don’t have to be loud to be a disruptor. Sitting Bull won by knowing how to sell his idea. He organized, collaborated and was patient. He won by quietly disrupting then got loud when the timing was perfect.

— Do your homework. “Urgency” as a price lever has been around since the Mad Men ran Madison Avenue. Have you ever reviewed how your urgency plan can be maximized? Or is the strategy played out?

— Who Cares? If you lower rates today until New Year’s Eve, will the rate reduction create enough local market buzz to drive the volume to beat your goals? You can always raise rates once your foundation is comfortably in place. Oops! Did I just demonstrate real world grid card selling?

And in a recent column here, we outlined the opportunity to exploit what, in my experience, is “the gift that keeps on giving” – the Personal Injury sub-category. Attorneys courting fender-bender, and other settlement cases are an industry in which supply exceeds demand, and for which radio can be super-opportune.

And long before the he-said/she-said is settled, there’s another local service category that’s a radio staple: Auto Body. Distracted driving alone has been good for business. So, help yourself to this copy, which has pulled well for a number of stations I work with.

Urban One Gets Non-Compliance Notice from Nasdaq

Urban One reports that it has received a letter from the Listing Qualifications Department of the Nasdaq Stock Market LLC notifying the company that it was not in compliance with requirements of Nasdaq Listing Rule 5250(c)(1) as a result of not having timely filed its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2022 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. “This notification has no immediate effect on the listing of Urban One’s common stock on the Nasdaq. However, if it fails to timely regain compliance with the Nasdaq Listing Rule, the Company’s common stock will be subject to delisting. Under the Nasdaq rules, the company has 60 calendar days to file the 2022 Form 10-K or to submit to Nasdaq a plan to regain compliance with the Nasdaq Listing Rule. If Nasdaq accepts the company’s plan, then Nasdaq may grant the Company up to 180 days from the prescribed due date for filing the 2022 Form 10-K to regain compliance. If Nasdaq does not accept the company’s plan, then Urban One will have the opportunity to appeal that decision to a Nasdaq Hearings Panel. The company says it is working diligently and expects to file its 2022 Form 10-K within the 60-day period. Previously, Urban One notified the SEC that it had identified material weaknesses in its internal control over financial reporting and as a result, expected some of its internal controls over financial reporting and disclosure controls would be ineffective as of December 31, 2022. The Annual Report on Form 10-K for 2022 will describe these material weaknesses, and the company is implementing plans to remediate them.”

Cumulus Names David Kelly PD for KCUB-AM, Tucson

Cumulus Media names David Kelly program director for sports talk outlet KCUB-AM, Tucson “Wildcats Radio 1290.” Kelly will also host the 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm program beginning June 12. Kelly joins Cumulus from KVOA-TV, Tucson, where he’s been serving as sports anchor and reporter. Kelly has also been radio network anchor and play-by-play announcer for the University of Arizona. Kelly’s won five Associated Press first place honors for his work in radio. Cumulus Tucson operations manager Herb Crowe says, “I couldn’t be happier to welcome David to the Cumulus family. His experience covering all of the University of Arizona athletic programs for television, combined with his years of radio experience, make him the perfect person to lead ‘Wildcats Radio 1290.’” Kelly comments, “When I came here to Tucson 15 years ago, my hope was that I’d have the chance at some point to lead coverage of the high-profile collegiate sports program at UA. The opportunity to head programming for ‘Wildcats Radio 1290’ gives me the chance to do that, as well as set the pace for delivering the best sports, news and information to our listeners in Southern Arizona.”

Jon Kurland Named EVP at iHeartMedia

iHeartMedia appoints Jon Kurland to the EVP of business affairs and chief entertainment counsel position. The company says that in this new role, Kurland will lead iHeartMedia’s business affairs team and focus on strategic deals and relationships with the company’s podcast, music, entertainment and new media partners. He will be responsible for business and legal affairs across the company’s divisions including multiplatform assets, digital audio and tentpole events. In addition, Kurland will oversee the company’s entertainment legal functions across podcasts, live events, and new media initiatives as well as its music licensing strategy, including maintaining and renewing all music industry licenses for iHeartRadio’s digital services and performance licenses through PRO agencies.  iHeartMedia EVP and general counsel Jordan Fasbender says, “Jon’s vast experience and dealmaking skills in the audio industry will be incredibly valuable as we continue to innovate and expand our partnerships and opportunities that leverage and enhance iHeartMedia’s position as the leading audio company in the U.S.” Kurland joins iHeartMedia from Amazon, where he served as senior corporate counsel in the Global Media & Entertainment group.

SiriusXM’s says its bipartisan political and news channel tweaks its program schedule. It says, “With the 2024 presidential race already underway, host Laura Coates will now kick-off coverage of the day’s breaking news from SiriusXM’s Washington, D.C. studios, with host Julie Mason returning to afternoons on the newly rebranded ‘The Julie Mason Show.’ Coates, who also serves as CNN’s senior legal analyst and host of ‘CNN Tonight,’ will continue to use her prosecutorial skills to analyze the top stories from a legal perspective.” Sirius XM says Mason is a veteran Washington journalist in her 12th year with the company. It adds, “Mason’s program will feature interviews with a compelling mix of journalists, strategists, and other politicos, as well as politicians from both sides of the political aisle. Mason will also host regular Town Hall events from SiriusXM’s Washington studios, as well as other locations.”

NYPost: Could Carton Be Leaving WFAN for TV Gig?

Andrew Marchand’s New York Post column on Thursday (4/6) looks at the status of sports talk personality Craig Carton with Audacy’s WFAN, New York as his sources say management at cable TV’s FS1 – where Carton hosts a daily morning program – “are looking to own his exclusive rights.” Carton has been hosting “The Carton Show” weekdays from 7:00 am to 9:30 am on FS1 since September of last year in addition to the daily WFAN afternoon drive show he does alongside Evan Roberts. As Marchand writes, doing both shows is time consuming. Carton is up in the middle of the night to get to Midtown for the FS1 show, then does the WFAN show and gets home around 8:30 in the evening. Marchand also speculates that FS1 might believe that Carton’s TV show would draw more viewers if he wasn’t also on “The Fan.” It’s reported that Carton’s contract with Audacy expires later this year so WFAN would like to know what Carton’s plans are sooner rather than later.

Celeb Voices Adorn “Founding Son: John Quincy’s America” Podcast

iHeartPodcasts, Curiosity Inc., and School of Humans announce a new history podcast titled, “Founding Son: John Quincy’s America.” The show is hosted by musician Bob Crawford – bassist for The Avett Brothers – and features Patrick Warburton as John Quincy Adams, Nick Offerman as Andrew Jackson, and Grey DeLisle as Louisa Adams. The podcast tells the story of how John Quincy Adams went from a failed one-term president to an extraordinary ex-president. Additional voice talent includes filmmaker Ken Burns, CNN anchor John King, radio and CNN host Michael Smerconish, musician Scott Avett, and others. LiveOne Regains Nasdaq Compliance

LiveOne – the parent company of PodcastOne – announces that it has received formal notice from the Listing Qualifications Department of the Nasdaq Stock Market that it has regained compliance with the minimum bid price requirement set forth in Nasdaq Listing Rule 5550(a)(2). The notice indicated that it is a result of the closing bid price of the company’s common stock having been at least $1.00 per share for a minimum required number of consecutive business days. Separately, today (4/7) is the date that LiveOne has set for spinning out PodcastOne as its own publicly traded company.

NPR Angered by Twitter’s Classifying it “State-Affiliated Media”

NPR is protesting the move by Twitter to label it “state-affiliated media” to Twitter users – a move previously reserved for media outlets in places like China, Russia and North Korea. According to the AP report by David Bauder, Twitter describes state-affiliated media as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.” Twitter owner Elon Musk replied to NPR’s protestations with two words – “Seems accurate.” NPR president and CEO John Lansing said the company was disturbed to see the “state-affiliated Media” tag slapped on its tweets and calls it “unacceptable for Twitter to label us this way.” Read the complete story here.

Talk Host Jack Harris Vows to Return to Tampa’s Airwaves

After being let go from his two-hour morning drive show on iHeartMedia’s news/talk WFLA, Tampa last week, longtime market talk radio personality Jack Harris says he’ll return to the air in the market. The 81-year-old Harris tells the Tampa Bay Times that there is interest from other broadcasters but the six-month non-compete in his iHeart contract prevents him from working elsewhere right away. Harris says he didn’t get the chance to do a farewell show – something iHeartMedia West Florida president Chris Soechtig denies. Salem Media Group says it’s offered to host a farewell show on its crosstown news/talk WGUL “AM860 The Answer,” but also doesn’t want Harris to get into a legal tussle. Read the whole story here.

Gerald Celente is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast

Noted trends forecaster and outspoken commentator Gerald Celente is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “The Michael Harrison Interview.” Harrison describes Celente as “a fascinating individual who is the embodiment of the word ‘independent’ in both his use of digital platforms and his bold outspoken opinions about contemporary issues.” Celente is a longtime forecaster of economic, political and social trends and has been a guest voice familiar to the hosts and audiences of talk radio and television for decades. Based in historic Kingston, New York, he publishes a magazine called Trends Journal, co-hosts a podcast with noted media figure Judge Andrew Napolitano, promotes rallies for peace, and has even launched a non- sectarian entity called the Universal Church of Freedom Peace and Justice from which – as its deacon – he delivers a weekly YouTube sermon denouncing America’s role in foreign wars… a position that has cost him a number of former allies in business and the media. Celente describes himself as a “political atheist.”  Listen to the podcast in its entirety here.

Former CBS World News Roundup Anchor Bill Lynch Dies

Award-winning journalist Bill Lynch – former anchor of CBS News Radio’s “World News Roundup” – died on Tuesday in Lawrence, Kansas at the age of 77. Three years after getting out of the Army in 1968, Lynch joined WCBS Radio in New York City as a reporter and later as an assistant news director. He joined CBS News as a correspondent in 1981. In 1985, he became anchor of “World News Roundup” – a position he would hold until 1999.  Current “World News Roundup” anchor Steve Kathan says, “His booming voice and punchy writing style set him apart. He read and knew so much about so many issues and so many places. Bill Lynch was an influence on me and so many others who aimed to do what he could do.”

How to Bounce Back and Get a Job

A shocking number of highly qualified broadcasters have lost their jobs.  The venture capitalists that financed the big radio companies are the people who should be fired, but that’s the next column. Let’s get you a job.

When you lose a job there are three actions that will help you land the next job.

— For the first few days, say nothing. Don’t post on social media, don’t answer the phone. You will say something very wrong.

— Every word from you should be that the company that fired you is a great company and you were proud to be there.

— File for unemployment. It’s your money.

Get the Job

— Resumes are a waste of time. I’ve never written one. Focus on the exact job you want, identify the decision maker (which is never in HR) and study. Learn everything you can about the target company and their problems. Write a solution plan. Identify exactly how you can be of service to your potential employer.

— Go to the gym. Just go. A lifetime of pizza delivery doesn’t look great! Get busy. The busier you are the faster you’ll get the job you want. Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Dollar Tree will hire you today. Get into the stream of work life, it will change your energy.

— In your solution plan, write out how you will help your new employer. The more knowledge you show of your “new” job and company, the more flattered and impressed the decision-maker will be. No one will hire you because you need a job, they will hire you because you will solve a problem. Your plan and solutions will probably be very wrong. It doesn’t matter. You have demonstrated a sincere, studied interest in the company and have made a remarkable effort. Then they have to deal with you. A plan in a three-ring binder cannot be filed. Your plan will sit on the top of a credenza and every time an exec walks into that office, there you are at eye level!

— When you get the interview, show up 20 minutes before the meeting (not an hour). Check out in advance how the employees of the company dress and dress like that. This is no time for self-expression. After the interview, send thank you notes to everyone you met on real paper with a real postal stamp, no emails.

— The goal is to start doing the job weeks or months before you are actually hired. Bring a sales order. Write a positive critique from a listening monitor. Show up at a remote and help.

— TIP. Your odds of landing a job are much greater if you aim for one in the city where you now live.

— Go to the gym.

An Audacy Insights piece by company chief marketing officer Paul Suchman lays out the case that audio – radio/streaming/podcasts – is a more effective marketing tool than video (the traditional darling of media planners). Suchman writes that this argument “is among the ultimate tussles between media planners and publishers. While some may lean more heavily toward video, we at Audacy respectfully disagree.” He makes a five-point argument in audio’s favor saying it wins in reach, time spent using, is more immersive, activates all senses, and drives recall. Rainey Rises to VP National Sales for CMG

In this new role, Rainey will oversee national, network, and political sales for CMG’s 52 radio stations in 11 markets. Last Saturday (4/1) the ParaPod Awards were handed out at the Hyatt Regency Valencia as part of the two-day ParaPod Festival. Pending Business: Attracting New Recruits

Ask any sales manager what the #1 challenge they face is and nine times out of 10 the surprise answer is not “more business.” Generating more business takes a well-oiled machine that starts and ends with a focused, well-trained sales team. And therein lies the challenge question I hear every week. “Where can I find more good salespeople?”

With all the sophisticated technology available today – from Zoom and Teams to data mining and social media – it is hard to comprehend why any viable radio station would have difficulty recruiting “good salespeople.” I rarely faced that challenge in any of the markets where I worked. No matter what the ownership structure or market size – from Buffalo to San Francisco – recruiting and retaining “good salespeople” was only an occasional problem.

If you are a manager at any level, in any market, responsible for recruiting and training “good salespeople,” you may never view the task the same way again if you follow these six simple steps:

1)         Recruitment should always be on your “To Do” list. Always, period, the end. Like the sun rises every morning, recruitment is a regular part of your day.

2)         Times are changing, build your bench. If your sales team is a mix of generations, any given team member may decide to move on for reasons you may not understand. Be prepared. Turnover happens, don’t be ambushed.

3)         Do you have a written profile of the ideal candidate for sales? Sound crazy? Try it right now. What are the three must-have qualities of every successful seller on your team? Those qualities may now be changing with newer digital, social media, and programming changes.

4)         Is your compensation structure competitive? This is one of my favorites. Depending on ownership you may or may not have the degree of flexibility you want. However, you may find a friendlier structure through performance incentives.

5)         Would you trust members of your current team to interview a candidate? I used the technique often over 15 years. Sometimes the culture in your sales department is unique or you may feature team performance incentives. The power of teams is a proven winner in most businesses.

6)         Are you plugged in to the new-think of today’s entry-level seller? Here are some current facts that may change your view of recruiting younger sellers:

   a) A study at the University of Chicago showed 56% of Americans think a college degree is not worth the money. Wow, is that different from most job postings!

b) As job markets become unpredictable, 97% of graduating seniors are open to alternative careers, as in not their major, this according to a study by iCIMS.

Finding “good salespeople” should never be viewed as a management headache. Once you make the commitment, the next great seller could be your next interview.
