In Support of the First Amendment

TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison has issued the following statement in response to the White House press ban on CNN, MSNOW and Politico:

img“Throughout its 36-year history of service to the talk radio and associated talk media industries, TALKERS has maintained a strict policy of non-partisanship in its coverage of the field and its players. However, the single ideological orthodoxy practiced by TALKERS through this period has been uncompromising support of the First Amendment – the prime principle and foundation upon which all American freedoms and values are built. Over the years, we have bestowed our prestigious Freedom of Speech Award upon a wide variety of broadcasters from all ends of the political spectrum, and we have gone to bat in support of hosts, stations and networks – popular and otherwise, Democrat and Republican, liberal and conservative – when under fire from presidents and other governmental forces determined to quell that fundamental right.  For the sake of our industry and our country, we stand in protest of the current White House press ban imposed against our colleagues and strongly encourage all practitioners of American talk media, regardless of political persuasion, to unify in opposition to this egregious aggression against our fundamental right to fulfill our core duty and promise to the people of our nation.”

TV Nets Suspend Pool Coverage After White Bans CNN, MS Now and Politico

In the aftermath of the Trump administration’s banning CNN, MS Now and Politico reporters from covering the administration from The White House, television pool members FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News issued the following statement: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.” All other pool coverage will continue as normal, including Congress, VIPs, and selected events in Washington and around the country. Additionally, CNN MS Now and Politico announced a suit challenging their ban, saying, “This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes. Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting. Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

Salem Radio Network Refuses to Back Networks “Stunt”

In response to the stoppage of White House pool coverage, Salem Radio Network vice president of news & talk programming Tom Tradup issued the following statement: “This morning, the major TV networks announced they will cease pool coverage of imgPresident Donald J. Trump in solidarity with CNN, which had its hard pass revoked over the weekend by the White House.

As longtime members of the White House Correspondents Association pool, SRN has notified the WHCA that our network will refuse to join this incredibly juvenile stunt which is actually more like a RICO violation by mobsters than actions of legitimate American media.

Access to the Oval Office and to the President of the United State’s pool events is a privilege, not a free pass to slant coverage against – or for – any occupant of the Presidency. With this action, the major networks have shown their bias and petulance outweighs how they envision their responsibility to cover news under the First Amendment for which they so quickly cry crocodile tears.”

Monday Memo: Sell the Outcome, Not the Product

By Holland Cooke
Consultant

imgAll this month, I am outlining revenue-producing strategies and tactics, proven by advertisers’ results (which pay us all). If you missed our first two installments, here are “So what?” and “Stop Sounding Like Commercials.”

Listen to a stopset of local radio commercials and you’ll hear lots of stuff for sale.

Cars. Mattresses. Furnaces. Checking accounts. Replacement windows. Legal services. Appliances. But consumers don’t really want any of those things. They want what happens next.

  • Nobody wakes up yearning for a new HVAC system. They want the house warm when it’s 12 degrees outside.
  • Nobody dreams about replacement windows. They want lower heating bills, less street noise, and a living room that isn’t drafty.
  • Nobody wants a mattress. They want to wake up without a backache.

Great salespeople sell outcomes. Great commercials should too.

But too often, advertising gets bogged down explaining what something is. Instead, demonstrate what it does for me.

  • Don’t tell me your auto shop provides complimentary loaner cars. Assure me that I’ll get to work even when my car can’t.
  • Don’t tell me your landscaper offers weekly maintenance. Let me spend Saturday enjoying my yard instead of working in it.
  • Don’t tell me your restaurant makes everything from scratch. Make me hungry.

Consumers need clues

Help them picture themselves after doing business with the advertiser. That’s especially powerful on radio because our medium doesn’t provide the picture… the listener does. And the picture in someone’s imagination can be more persuasive than anything you could put on a screen.
