WBT, Charlotte, Morning Show Co-Host Beth Troutman is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast. One of news/talk radio’s rapidly rising stars, former television anchor Beth Troutman, is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “The Michael Harrison Interview.” Since joining veteran morning personality Bo Thompson as co-host of “Good Morning BT” in April, the heritage station’s program has solidified its position as the top morning show in Charlotte. The new duo’s chemistry appears to be clicking on all cylinders. Troutman’s a Charlotte-area native and a UNC Chapel Hill graduate. Her professional credentials are impressive. One of her first media jobs out of college was working on the production team for the smash TV series, “The West Wing.” She mounted an impressive campaign for U.S. Congress at age 27. She’s been a syndicated TV host, lead news anchor, and an Olympics reporter. As a documentarian, she has won two Emmy Awards and she has reported worldwide, from Brazil to Haiti to Pakistan. She has generated a buzz around the industry for her infectious on-air positivity and journalistic even-handedness. WABC: The Cats Era. Several hundred invited guests from media, business, and politics gathered last night at posh Big Apple venue Cipriani 42^nd Street to attend the double-celebration of WABC’s 100^th anniversary and the 74^th birthday of its owner John Catsimatidis, CEO of Red Apple Media. It was a star-studded gala event featuring speeches, music, dining and dancing with presentations by a wide variety of station luminaries including Red Apple president Chad Lopez; station personalities Cousin Bruce Morrow, Curtis Sliwa, Sid Rosenberg, Frank Morano, James Golden, and Deborah Valentine, as well as station co-owner/operator Margo Catsimatidis. The night’s activities included spirited musical performances by Tony Orlando, Joe Piscopo, Deana Martin, and Vinnie Medugno backed up by a full swing band. Catsimatidis, who took ownership of the legendary station from Cumulus Media in 2019 issued the statement: “Margo and I are honored to join 77 WABC in celebration of 100 years of broadcasting excellence. Round Two of August PPMs Released. The second of two rounds of ratings data from Nielsen Audio’s August 2022 PPM survey has been released for 12 markets including Washington, Boston, Miami, Seattle, Detroit, Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Diego, Tampa, Denver, Baltimore, and St. Louis. Nielsen’s August 2022 sweep covered July 21 – August 17. Today, TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents his Ratings Takeaways from this group of markets. In Washington DC, Cumulus Media’s news/talk WMAL-FM dips two-tenths and finishes the survey with a 3.9 share (weekly, 6+ AQH share), but remains ranked #8, while Hubbard Broadcasting’s crosstown all-news WTOP-FM adds a half share for an 8.0 share finish that propels it to the #2 rank. iHeartMedia’s news/talk WRKO, Boston climbs to the #7 rank after adding eight-tenths for a 4.3 share finish as sister all-news WBZ-AM tacks on three-tenths for a 4.6 share finish good for the #6 rank. In Detroit, Cumulus Media’s news/talk WJR-AM is up one-tenth for a 3.2 share finish that keeps it ranked #13, while Audacy’s crosstown all-news WWJ-AM rises six-tenths for a 5.1 share finish that boosts it to the #8 rank. Chris Cuomo Resurfaces at Nexstar Media’s News Nation. Former CNN personality Chris Cuomo will be back on television on Monday, October 3 when his show “Cuomo” launches on Nexstar Media’s NewsNation channel. Cuomo was let go by CNN in late 2021 after being implicated in his brother Andrew Cuomo’s campaign to defend himself against sexual harassment allegations while still serving as governor of New York. The new program will be produced at Nexstar’s midtown Manhattan production studios with Alexandra “Dusty” Cohen as executive producer. Cohen says, “I have known Chris Cuomo for nearly 30 years, and he is hands down the best interviewer of our generation. I am grateful to NewsNation for this incredible opportunity and am blown away by the number of news and talk industry heavyweights who have joined our team. We have hit the ground running.”

Former WGY, Albany Air Personality Chuck Custer Named to NY State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame Class of 2022. The New York State Broadcasters Association unveils its 2022 class of four inductees into its Hall of Fame and among them is WGY-AM/FM personality Chuck Custer. The now retired Custer served in Albany for more than 36 years. The NYSBA says, “He was the co-host of the top-rated morning show with Kelly Lynch beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he served as morning news anchor and the on-air partner for 25 years with NYSBA Hall of Famer Don Weeks. Custer also previously served as news director and program director for WGY. He also is a former president of the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association. Custer’s leadership in the newsroom is unsurpassed. As news director, the WGY news department was honored with more than 35 awards for excellence in journalism including four national Edward R. Murrow Awards from the RTDNA. At Custer’s retirement, John Cooper, SVP of programming for iHeartMedia Albany stated, ‘For over 36 years, Chuck Custer has been synonymous with WGY. From his time as the leader of the award-winning WGY news department, his outstanding work with ‘Don Weeks in the Mornings,’ his current co-host position with Kelly Lynch, and most importantly all the time he’s contributed to the people of the Capital District. Chuck has been the consummate professional. He’s a great broadcaster who will long be remembered.’”

Key Networks to Syndicate SpeedFreaks Motorsports Program. The 22-year-old motorsports radio program “SpeedFreaks” is joining Key Networks for national affiliate sales and network ad sales, effective September 11. Key Networks says it has already added 80 new stations to the programs roster of affiliates via a new partnership with SportsMap Radio. “SpeedFreaks” is hosted by Kenny Sargent, with co-hosts Crash Gladys and Statt Mann Caruthers, a.k.a. “The Freaks.” The program airs live Sunday nights from 10:00 pm-12:00 midnight ET. Katz Promotes Rick Ramos to EVP of Multicultural Partnerships. Rising to the new position EVP of Katz Multicultural Partnerships is Rick Ramos. Katz says that in this new role, Ramos will continue to oversee the creation of dynamic multicultural marketing campaigns across all of Katz’s audio partners. “Katz Multicultural delivers advertisers access to 96% of the Multicultural audio marketplace in one stop. Ramos will also continue to lead advocacy efforts for multicultural advertising and further strengthen relationships with marketers and agencies.” Katz Radio Group president Christine Travaglini says, “Connecting brands authentically with the Multicultural population is key for a successful campaign. TALKERS News Notes. Live overage of last Saturday evening’s Donald Trump rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania was most viewed on Newsmax TV, according to data from Nielsen. Newsmax says it was the third-most-watched cable network (behind ESPN and Hallmark Channel) during the 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm ET period and surpassed the combined ratings of CNN and MSNBC, pulling in more than 21% of both networks. Nielsen reports that Newsmax had a total audience of 1.7 million viewers for Trump’s speech, with its overall coverage drawing over 1.9 million viewers, topping FOX News Channel which had 942,000 viewers in the same time period…..Sports Injury Central announces the addition of hall-of-fame radio broadcaster Jim Rome to its advisory board. Sports Injury Central says this affiliation gives Rome listeners across over 200 stations access to injury insights that will give them an edge in their wagering and fantasy sports activities while giving Sports Injury Central significant national distribution of its brand. Rome states, “I’m very impressed with Sports Injury Central. Their injury reporting and assessments are second to none. But more importantly, as the sports wagering industry continues to explode, I believe their handicapping tools – especially the SIC Scores – will be an absolute necessity for serious gamblers. It’s a phenomenal advantage.”…..Cumulus Media’s Westwood One begins its 36^th consecutive season as the exclusive primetime network radio partner of the NFL and this year’s championship will be the 50th time that the network will broadcast the Super Bowl to a national audience. For the first time, Westwood One’s NFL game broadcasts will be available to fans on affiliated stations’ primary digital platforms, the NFL App, and westwoodonesports.com. Kevin Harlan and NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner will once again be the lead broadcast crew, calling opening night, Monday Night Football and Super Bowl LVII for the network…..Compass Media Networks announces is schedule for NCAA and NFL football this season. NFL play-by-play coverage will consist of a double-header every Sunday for all 18 weeks of the regular season and Compass will begin the season with a week one tripleheader on Sunday, September 11. Featured guests include NFL All-Pro Shawne Merriman, fantasy football guru Matthew Berry and sports marketing entrepreneur David Meltzer, as well as other leading industry experts…..CNN Audio announces a new limited-series podcast hosted by Anderson Cooper called, “All There Is with Anderson Cooper,” premiering September 14. In this series, Cooper embarks on a deeply personal and emotional exploration of loss and grief and how to move forward without forgetting the moments, memories, and people we miss. He began recording this podcast alone during his final weeks packing up the apartment of his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt. Joe Gallagher to Return to WGY, Albany for Weekend Shows. The Albany Times-Union reports that talk host Joe Gallagher is returning to iHeartMedia’s news/talk WGY-AM/FM, Albany to host a one-hour program at 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Gallagher was let go from the station in 2020. He’d served as the station’s afternoon drive host for years and was hosting weekends when he departed in pandemic-related staff reductions. WGY news and program director Jeff Wolf says, “He’s been gone about two years, and pretty much on a weekly basis I get listener feedback saying ‘Bring Joe back.'” Gallagher hosted a few special programs earlier this year and that started the ball rolling in getting him back on a scheduled show. Wolf adds, “We were thrilled. He was all about it and, obviously, we are too.”

Wilson Named Operations Manager for Cumulus Media Mobile. Radio programming pro Vincent “Mojo” Wilson joins Cumulus Media’s Mobile, Alabama station group that consists of news/talk WXQW-AM and four music brands as operations manager. He’ll also serve as PD for WXQW-AM and CHR WABD-FM. Wilson was most recently director of operations for Southern Broadcasting in Florence/Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Cumulus Mobile VP and market manager Don Boyd says, “‘Mojo’ is a talented programmer and on-air personality with a strong track record leading urban, CHR, Gospel and news/talk stations. He will be an excellent addition to our top performing team in Mobile as operations manager of our five-station group.”

Greta Van Susteren to Moderate Newsmax’s Pennsylvania Senate Primary Debate. News/talk television personality Greta Van Susteren is moderating tomorrow’s Newsmax debate between the top contenders for the GOP nomination for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat that’s being vacated by retiring Senator Pat Toomey. The debate will take place on the campus of Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania in which Van Susteren will moderate candidates Dr. Mehmet Oz, David McCormick, Ambassador Carla Sands, Kathy Barnette, and Jeff Bartos. Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy says, “Pennsylvania is one of the most important states on the national map. And this race will have national implications, so we’ll be hosting this Newsmax debate live for all Americans to watch.”

TALKERS News Notes. Chicago media writer Robert Feder reports that former Chicago Bears great Olin Kreutz has been let go from his contributor role at the new digital sports venture CHGO Sports after he physically attacked a fellow staffer on Monday (5/2). Kreutz is also a contributor to Audacy’s sports talk WSCR “The Score” and NBC Sports Chicago. Kreutz is apparently not disputing the incident. He tweeted a picture of Mike Tyson with the text: “Social media made y’all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.”…..The National Association of Broadcasters announces that Alex Siciliano is joining the organization as senior communications strategist. Siciliano reports to NAB chief of staff and EVP of public affairs Michelle Lehman. In this newly created position, Siciliano will lead NAB’s public relations efforts on key advocacy issues, developing and implementing media relations strategies to advance broadcasters’ policy agenda before Congress and the Federal Communications Commission. Siciliano was most recently VP of communications at The Petrizzo Group. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt says, “Alex has years of experience in shaping and executing effective messaging campaigns on policy issues. Broadcasters will benefit from his deep advocacy background as he shapes NAB’s communications on the most important issues facing our industry. We are thrilled to welcome him to NAB.”…..The Freakonomics Radio Network names Neal Carruth as EVP and general manager. Carruth most recently led NPR’s news podcasting strategy, and his responsibilities at Freakonomics Radio Network will include helping to set the strategic and editorial direction of the organization. His hiring follows the March appointment of Gabriel Roth from Slate as editorial director. Carruth says, “For years now, I’ve been a serious fan of the work that Stephen Dubner and the team have done on the Freakonomics Radio podcast. I love the podcast’s combination of curiosity, rigor, and delight. I can’t wait to work with the team to grow the audience for the current slate of shows and to help them develop new properties. I’m so excited about this opportunity to help increase the reach and the impact of the Freakonomics Radio Network.”…..SiriusXM announces that entrepreneur, investor, best-selling author, and founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media, Randi Zuckerberg, will host a new SiriusXM original podcast titled, “Crypto Café With Randi Zuckerberg.” SiriusXM says, “With cryptocurrency being a hotly debated topic, Zuckerberg’s new podcast will feature both casual and educational conversations with metaverse experts, tech futurists, and top business executives who will share industry tips and explain the skills and foundational knowledge necessary to navigate the crypto ecosystem safely and successfully.”

Pending Business: “F” is for Frequency. Radio sales pro Steve Lapa says, “The more social media I consume, the more I see the same ads over and over. Many advertisers do not bother changing creative. Others just update slightly. But the repetition is there, every day, non-stop.” He says local direct sellers must continue to show how a radio campaign can deliver targeted reach AND frequency more effectively than any other medium. Radio advertising is adaptable in ways other advertising is not. “With the right amount of repetition and updated copy with a solid call to action” radio is more effective than any other medium. iHeartMedia Names Bloomdaddy Afternoon Host on WTAM, Cleveland. Three months after the passing of Cleveland talk radio icon Mike Trivisonno, iHeartMedia announces that David Blomquist, a.k.a. Bloomdaddy, is the new afternoon drive talk host on heritage news/talk outlet “Newsradio WTAM 1100, The Big One.” Bloomdaddy has been the morning show host at the company’s WWVA, West Virginia, for the past 17 years. The program was syndicated regionally to stations in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Akron, and Parkersburg, West Virginia. Bloomdaddy will now call WTAM 1100 his home. iHeartMedia says the newly created Cleveland-centric, issues-based afternoon show will feature broadcasting veteran Carmen Angelo, news reports from Julie Holiday, and regularly scheduled traffic reports from Olivia Muzica. iHeartMedia Cleveland president Keith Hotchkiss says, “We’re thrilled to introduce Bloomdaddy to WTAM and the city of Cleveland. His passion for sports, his quest for information, and his commonsense approach to talk radio is the perfect combination for afternoon drive on the legendary WTAM.” Bloomdaddy comments, “I’m thrilled to launch this new show on a station that means so much to Cleveland. From the minute I turned the mic on at WTAM, it’s felt like home. I look forward to having impactful conversations with my new radio family and learning even more about this incredible city.”

Bryan Suits Named Morning Host at KTTH, Seattle. Military veteran and talk radio personality Bryan Suits is back on the radio as morning host at Bonneville’s news/talk KTTH-AM, Seattle. Suits was an evening host on sister talk outlet KIRO-FM from 1999 through 2002. He’s also hosted at iHeartMedia’s KOGO, San Diego and KFI, Los Angeles. He hosts a podcast and is a frequent guest on FOX Business. Suits says, “When we moved back to Western Washington, the last thing on my mind was radio. After filling in on KTTH mornings, I realized that I was born to do this. This is where I started and found my voice. Someone has to reflect what the sensible people are thinking and thankfully KTTH is doing that. I’m humbled and grateful to be part of the team that tells the truth every day.” Bonneville SVP and market manager Cathy Cangiano says, “KTTH is the region’s leading conservative talk station because of our passionate, local hosts. Erin Vermeulen Promoted to Evening News Anchor on WWJ, Detroit. Radio news pro Erin Vermeulen is being promoted to evening news anchor at Audacy’s all-news WWJ, Detroit “NewsRadio 950.” She’d been serving the station as writer and editor for the station. WWJ notes that her career has taken her to the Cairo, Dubai, Oman and South Africa before returning to the United States and working at KFI, Los Angeles as a member of “The Bill Handel Morning Show” in 2015. Vermeulen says, “I am really excited to get back to my radio roots as a news presenter at one of the most iconic stations in the country. I am also very grateful to work with such talented and extraordinary people at WWJ. It is great to be back on the airwaves in my hometown, where I started my career more than 20 years ago.” Audacy Detroit SVP and market manager Debbie Kenyon comments, “Erin is well connected to the community and has a number of great ideas to keep listeners informed about the top stories and events happening across metro Detroit, the state and the country. WGY, Albany to Celebrate 100^th Anniversary with Special Broadcast and Podcast. Albany AM WGY will celebrate its 100^th anniversary on air on February 20 with a number of special presentations, including a live celebration at 1:00 pm that day. On January 31, iHeartMedia began presenting the podcast series, “Wireless: 100 Years of WGY.” The program is hosted by WGY news anchor Mike Patrick and features intimate and candid interviews with many familiar WGY voices, with new episodes released weekly. On February 20, many past and present hosts, news anchors and members of New York’s Capital Region will take part in the special live event. A retelling of radio’s first radio drama, “The Wolf,” will also be presented live from the Kenmore Ballroom in Albany where WGY has a history of broadcasting from going back to 1923. The event at the Kenmore begins at 3:00 pm with a lecture from Chris Hunter from the Museum of Innovation and Science. WGY program director Jeff Wolf says, “It’s an honor and huge responsibility to lead an institution of innovation and community service such as WGY into its next 100 years. ‘The Next Great Podcast’ Winner Named. The winner of the second annual “The Next Great Podcast” contest from iHeartMedia and Dan Patrick, in partnership with Tongal, is, “Hookergate: Criminals & Libertines in the South,” from Dr. Lindsay Byron. Byron is a former English professor, Southern historian and longtime stripper turned full-time artist, storyteller and community leader. “Hookergate: Criminals & Libertines in the South” takes listeners back in time to 1977 when a high-profile prostitution ring involving 11 businesses in three states was the most-talked-about headline of the day. The podcast combs through the dusty archives of the Danville Register & Bee, which were carefully clipped and preserved by Lindsay’s aunt’s mama, who held a familial connection to this web of crime. The program shares unforgettable colorful quotes from local reporters and unbelievable but true dramatic scenes pulled straight from the police reports. It’s all brought to life by Byron and presented alongside present-day interviews with individuals from the older Southern generation, who remember the madness as it unfolded in real time.
