GBH Names Lothian Editor-in-Chief

Boston public media firm GBH names Dan Lothian to the newly created role of editor in chief, GBHim News and The World. Lothian is currently the executive producer of “The World.” GBH president and CEO Susan Goldberg states, “Dan has impeccable credentials and is respected by colleagues throughout GBH and by journalists across the globe. With his background in both breaking news and longform features, and with deep experience in radio, television, and across digital platforms, he is ideally suited to lead coverage for today’s audiences.” Additionally, Tinku Ray, currently managing editor for “The World,” will be promoted to executive editor of the program.

New England Public Media’s popular local radio show “The Fabulous 413” celebrates its first anniversary on WFCR-FM, Amherst, Massachusetts “88.5 NEPM.” Program co-host Monte Belmonte says, “I’m not one to generally look back or laud anniversaries, but I’m very proud to be a part of this program that Kaliis [Smith] and I have built with the team over the past year here at NEPM. Public media firm GBH announces a $5 million grant from The Fiducia Fund to support “The Culture Show,” a daily news program shining a spotlight on arts and culture. GBH says the grant, pledged over a five-year period, will allow for the show’s sustainability and expansion to multiple platforms, including streaming on YouTube, a daily podcast, a weekly newsletter, events that include live broadcasts at the GBH Studio at the Boston Public Library, and featured segments on GBH News’ Greater Boston, a daily news program airing on GBH 2, and streaming live on YouTube. GBH president and CEO Susan Goldberg comments, “The arts are vital to a thriving community and ‘The Culture Show’ brings the local arts scene to the forefront for our listeners. This extraordinary commitment from The Fiducia Fund is the largest gift ever dedicated to GBH News. It is invaluable to ensuring we can continue to expand our coverage of the arts.”

GBH News Establishes Equity and Justice Unit

GBH News announces the creation of a new multiplatform unit that will focus on racial and socioeconomic equity issues in Greater Boston and beyond. GBH says the Equity and Justice unit will develop regional and national interest stories around these key topics, expanding its commitment to community events, engaging directly with the audience, and elevating community voices using the GBH News platform. GBH president and CEO Susan Goldberg says, “Shining a light on inequity – whether around healthcare, housing, income, or other topics – is an important job for our news organization. As the nation’s largest producer of public media content, we want to ensure awareness of these pressing issues is woven into the stories we tell, the way we work, and the platforms on which we share news and information.”

GBH to Broadcast from NAACP National Convention in Boston

Public media organization GBH is the exclusive public media partner for the NAACP’s 114th National Convention taking place in Boston from July 28 to August 1. In this role, GBH will provide extensive on-site coverage of the gathering with “Boston Public Radio and Basic Black,” the longest-running program on public television focusing on the interests of people of color. “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE,” produced at GBH, will preview a new documentary, “The Busing Battleground,” a telling of the tumultuous integration of the Boston Public Schools through a court-mandated busing plan in the 1970s. GBH CEO Susan Goldberg says, “At GBH, we are committed to covering important events, being present in our community, and representing our audiences, both in the stories we tell and how we tell them.”
