Ongoing Coverage of TALKERS 2024: Radio and Beyond

The 27th annual installment of the talk media industry’s longest running, and most important national event took place this past Friday (6/7) at Hofstra University on Long Island. TALKERS 2024: Radio and Beyond was an advance sellout. The power-packed, one-day agenda featured a roster of more than 60 speakers from all ends of the talk radio and related talk media industries including talent, station owners, CEOs, programmers, technical experts, journalists, syndicators, and a wide variety of visionaries. The annual talk media industry tradition was presented by TALKERS in association with the prestigious university’s multi-award-winning station WRHU Radio and Hofstra’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication. Key discussions included “Gaining Traction in a Noisy World,” “The Case for AM Radio,” “Generating News/Talk Revenue in the Digital Era,” “The State of Sports Talk Radio,” “The Brave New World of Technological and Generational Change,” “Programming News/Talk Radio,” “Perspectives on Hosting Television Talk,” “Philanthropy and Community Service,” “The Art of Story Telling,” “Talk Radio Programming Opportunities Beyond Politics,” “Meeting the Challenges of Being a Talk Talent,” “The Big Picture of Radio’s Role in a Rapidly Changing World,” and “The State of the First Amendment” among others. Michael Harrison (l) interviewed Fred Toucher (r), morning show co-host of WBZ-FM 98.5 The Sports Hub, Boston in a fireside chat titled, “The State of Sports Talk Radio.”  The discussion included comparisons between sports talk and news/talk radio, the benefit of sports talk hosts operating in on-air teams, the relationship sports talk hosts have with home teams and their ardent fans, dealing with harsh criticism on social media, the impact of gambling on sports talk radio, the challenges hosts are facing in covering women’s basketball and more.

NewsNation Expands to 24/7 Operation

Nexstar Media announces that its NewsNation news channel will expand its news programming to 24-hours-per-day Monday through Sunday, beginning June 1. The network will launch the final portion of its live news lineup with the early-evening edition of “NewsNation Now” with Adrienne Bankert on Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm ET. The company says that this new block of newsim follows the recent launches of the weekend editions of “Morning in America with Hena Doba” from 7:00 am to 10:00 am ET, “NewsNation Live” from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm ET, “NewsNation Now with Anna Kooiman” from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET, and “The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt,” which debuted earlier this year. Networks division president Sean Compton states, “We are immensely proud to announce that NewsNation is now a 24/7 cable news network. This milestone marks the culmination of our efforts to continue expanding and growing the network since launching it in 2020. It reaffirms our commitment to delivering unbiased news coverage, a mission that resonates deeply with our viewers, fostering their trust in the brand, and strengthening their loyalty to NewsNation.” The network also announces the hiring of three veteran journalists, including the aforementioned Anna Kooiman, who joined in March as anchor of the weekend edition of “NewsNation Now”; senior correspondent Laura Ingle, who most recently served as a senior correspondent at FOX News Channel; and Alicia Nieves, who will be a New York-based correspondent after joining the network from the financial streaming service, Fintech TV.

Lee Harris is This Week’s Guest on Harrison Podcast

Radio journalist, personality, media manager and tech creator Lee Harris is this week’s guest on the award-winning PodcastOne series, “The Michael Harrison Interview.” It’s been nearly a year since Harris surprised the world of broadcast journalism when he announced that after nearly 30 years, he would be leaving one of the most important positions in all-news radio – morning anchor at the legendary 1010 WINS, New York. He left by his own choice to accept the position of director of integrated operations with NewsNation, the new and rapidly growing cable news network, where he would be responsible for the development and distribution of the multi-platform operation’s audio content. Based at NewsNation’s New York newsroom, this Edward R. Murrow Award-winner would also assist in news writing and the creation of NewsNation specials. He is also playing a large hand in the programming of the company’s major radio property – the historic WGN, Chicago. Harrison and Harris discuss a variety of subjects from 1010 WINS history back to its top 40 roots to NewsNation’s positioning as an unbiased news platform. Nexstar Media Group Launches NewsNation Audio Network

Nexstar Media Group announces that its NewsNation cable news channel launches the NewsNation Audio Network, a service that provides ready-to-air audio clips for participating radio stations and audio platforms. The company says, “Leveraging the vast newsgathering resources of NewsNation, the newim audio service provides radio stations access to NewsNation content. The NewsNation Audio Network will offer an ongoing, daily service of audio clips featuring coverage from its reporters and breaking news stories from across the nation and around the globe. Radio newsrooms can sign up for access at NewsNationAudio.com. Audio can be downloaded at NewsNationAudio.com or can be delivered directly to newsroom systems including NewsBoss.”

Cable news network NewsNation launches a new Sunday public affairs program titled, “The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt.” The show will debut on March 3 at 10:00 am ET. NewsNation president of news Michael Corn states, “We are delighted that Chris will be joining the new weekend lineup. He is a legendary figure in Washington and one of the most respected, intelligent, and well-sourced journalists covering U.S. politics.”

Digital sports platform OutKick announces that it finished 2023 with the most growth year over year amongst its competitive set in total multiplatform unique visitors, delivering a monthly average of 7.2 million total multiplatform unique visitors, up 65% versus 2022, according to Comscore. OutKick founder Clay Travis says,“2023 was a tremendous year for OutKick. We’ve added new shows, top-tier talent, and most importantly continued to generate engaging content with a roster that’s unfiltered and fearless.”

PodcastOne renews the exclusive sales and distribution rights for the “Our Fake History” podcast, created and hosted by Canadian high school history teacher Sebastian Major. PodcastOne chief content officer Eli Dvorkin says, “We’re thrilled to continue our long-term relationship with Sebastian and ‘Our Fake History.’ This podcast is a leader in debunking or verifying historical myths and legends while instilling the sort of knowledge that makes any listener just that much smarter.”

SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly will host a special live edition of her program on December 6 at 10:15 pm ET immediately following the “NewsNation” Republican Primary Debate. SiriusXM’s Triumph channel will also carry the debate live.

New York-based software firm Aiir Inc announces the addition of five news staffers. They include Paul Carlin and Phil Ray who join the customer support team in the UK. Phil Hannon joins Aiir’s team in North America, as does Chase Daniels, who has been serving as Bold Gold Media’s director of programming. Additionally, Alex Watson assumes the newly created position of customer experience specialist.

Edison Research’s Top 10 Findings of 2023 will be unveiled in a 30-minute webinar on December 13 at 2:00 pm ET. Edison says the list-worthy findings on audio, podcasts, radio, exit polls and more from its custom research and syndicated datasets will be presented by many of the researchers who worked on the studies.

NewsNation Announces Lee Harris’ New Role

Yesterday (5/1), TALKERS magazine reported that WINS, New York morning drive co-anchor Lee Harris is leaving his position with the Audacy all-news station at the end of this week to join Nexstar Media Group’s cable news and digital operation NewsNation. Today, Nexstar officially announces the news and expands on Harris’ new, New York-based role. NewsNation says he joins the network as director of integrated operations inim which he’ll be responsible for the development and distribution of NewsNation’s audio content. He’ll also assist in news writing and NewsNation specials. Nexstar president of networks Sean Compton states, “As we recently celebrated the milestone becoming 24-hour news network weekdays, we are continually looking for ways to grow the NewsNation brand across our linear and digital platforms. I am thrilled that Lee Harris is going to be leading these efforts as we further expand the network’s reach with viewers and listeners across the country.” Harris comments, “It took an incredible opportunity to convince me to leave 1010 WINS after nearly 30 years.
