Massachusetts Broadcasters AssociatioinDuring a presentation last week at Beasley Media Group Boston, the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association awarded 11 scholarships totaling $30,000. Scholarship checks were presented by MBA’s immediate past chair/Beasley Media Group vice president/market manager Mary Menna and MBA executive director Jordan Walton. According to Menna, “Beasley Media is proud to have participated in the MBA Student Broadcaster Scholarship for many years. It’s a worthwhile investment in supporting the next generation of radio and television employees.” Walton commented, “The MBA and its members have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in our future broadcasters. We look forward to watching this group succeed in broadcasting in the years to come.” Menna and Walton delivered brief remarks to the scholarship winners before BMG Boston sports talk WBZ-FM “98.5 The Sports Hub” morning hosts Fred Toucher and Rob “Hardy” Poole spoke to the winners about their paths into broadcasting. Student Broadcaster Scholarships are given to students pursuing a career in over-the-air broadcasting and enrolled at a two or four-year accredited school.

 

Rob EllisAudacy Philadelphia sports talk WIP “Sports Radio 94” names Rob Ellis Saturday 10:00 am -1:00 pm co-host, succeeding the retired Glen Macnow. Ellis will be partnered with Mike Sielski, who said during the on-air announcement, “It’s going to be terrific. We very much wanted to keep the tone, content, and humor that Glen brought to the show.” Ellis joined WIP in 2007; left in 2015; but returned in 2018. He has previously hosted afternoons; evenings; and pre- and post-game shows of the Phillies; Eagles; Sixers; and Flyers. Ellis worked in television for 23 years and is a two-time Emmy winner.

Class of 2023 Inducted into MBA Hall of Fame

The Massachusetts Broadcasters Association inducted the Class of 2023 into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame at a ceremony attended by almost 300 broadcasters, friends, and fans last Thursday (6/8). The six inductees are: retired long-time former sports anchor Mike Lynch from Boston’s WCVB-TV; the late and beloved videographer Therman Toon from Boston’s Channel 7; the late WBZ-TV, Boston, reporter, the gifted storyteller Bill Shields; from WBZ NewsRadio 1030, Boston, the heralded news reporter and “poet laureate” Carl Stevens; Spanish-language radio station entrepreneur Patrick Costa; and Lesley University communications professor and former rock and roll DJ Donna L. Halper. Halper also received the Hall of Fame Pioneer Award, given, as HOF committee chair Peter Brown explained, “to individuals who have distinguished themselves over decades for lasting contributions made to the broadcast industry and through a leadership role in their particular craft.”

NBA & MBA Launch The High School Radio Project

The Nebraska Broadcasters Association and the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association have partnered to create The High School Radio Project (HSRP). The two broadcasters associations say, “Theim HSRP brings real-world radio skills to high school media students in each state, allowing students to curate and schedule music, record radio breaks, produce news and sports stories, interviews, and PSAs, all aired on a streaming radio station heard around the world, 24-hours a day on HighSchoolRadioProject.org, Live365, and Amazon Alexa.” They have recruited industry vendors to assist the students in their radio projects, allowing them to “closely mimic an actual radio station, developing critical communication skills and giving a head start to those who wish to further their radio journey by bolstering college applications and adding valuable skills to their work resumé.”

Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame Unveils Class of 2023

The Massachusetts Broadcasters Association announces the 2023 inductees into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. From the radio side, this year’s inductees include former rock jock Donna L. Halper, currently a communications professor at Lesley University, and Spanish music radio station entrepreneur Pat Costa. Halper is also receiving the Hall of Fame Pioneer Award, given “to individuals who have distinguished themselves over decades for lasting contributions made to the broadcast industry and through a leadership role in their particular craft.” Other inductees are WCVB-TV, Boston sports anchor Mike Lynch, the late and beloved WHDH-TV videographer Therman Toon, late WBZ-TV reporter Bill Shields, and WBZ Radio’s heralded news reporter and “poet laureate” Carl Stevens.
