WWO: Listeners Don’t Tire of Ads

This week’s Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group blog looks at research commissioned by RAB to investigate “wear-out”: the point where creative testing declines from its peak due to message frequency fatigue. They key findings include: 1) Consumers don’t get tired of ads, only marketers do: Theimg ABX AM/FM radio creative study for RAB proves legendary marketing professor Mark Ritson was right; 2) Wear-out of AM/FM radio ads is virtually non-existent: Only two of 25,000 ads showed a decline in some creative effectiveness metrics. Two major creative effectiveness measures, branding and messaging, showed no wear-out; 3) The two ads showing differences were at the top end of cumulative spending and time in market: Two years in market and $8M+ of spend is where creativeness effectiveness might start to wane; 4) Repeat testing of 10 of the 12 longest running AM/FM radio ads reveals no statistically significant erosion; and 5) The giants of marketing effectiveness and creative testing conclude wear-out is non-existent: Take it from Les Binet/Sarah Carter, ABX, Kantar, System1, and Analytic Partners. Monday Memo: “Kill The Feed!”

imgCorporate cost cuts continue. In a recent column here, I described 18 non-radio career options for which your skill set as a broadcaster could qualify you. In just the last couple years, several longtime TV news people I know – who had-it-up-to-here with the hours – reinvented themselves accordingly.

“But radio is all I’ve ever done!” you say? No. Radio is (or was) your platform. And – as clients are accustomed to hearing me say – “Everything we do is storytelling.” So where else can you tell yours?

Tools are available, many free. To illustrate, I wrote a novella (shorter than a novel, longer than a short story). It’s the first fiction I’ve written since a high school homework assignment, and you can download it, also free.

I had an idea for a John Grisham/James Patterson-style thriller. ChatGPT and MS Copilot were my co-authors, suggesting plot twists and critiquing, chapter-by-chapter. After ChatGPT reviewed each one, I ran it through Copilot – like having a team of writers. Both AI tools also created the images you will see on the landing page. Tell either app how you want your web page to look, and it will write the HTML code! And Google Search helped with details.

Every one of those functions was completed in five seconds or less, free. As is Audacity, if you’d rather not spend for your own copy of the Adobe Audition you use (or used) at the radio station. And before you subscribe to Microsoft Office 365, peruse the suite of lookalike tools at OpenOffice.org. Video? Premiere Pro is pricey, but Adobe Express is free and there are shareware alternatives.

Radio Pro Jim Quinn Dies at 82

Radio personality Jim Quinn died on Sunday (3/30) at the age of 82. Pittsburgh’s TribLIVE reports about the career radio host who worked for much of his career as a music jock and morning show host beforeimg transitioning to a conservative talk host in the early 2000s. Quinn started his radio career at KQV, Pittsburgh in the 1960s. Quinn partnered with Don Jefferson for the popular “Quinn and Banana” show on WKTQ in Pittsburgh from 1983 to 1992. The TribLIVE story notes that Quinn took a position at WRRK, Braddock, PA where he honed his conservative talk chops. He partnered with Rose Tennent and had a successful run with “The Warroom with Quinn and Rose” on iHeartMedia’s WPGB-FM, Pittsburgh as well as on satellite radio. See the TribLIVE story here.

Audacy Names Reis-Dennis Head of Podcasts

Audacy promotes Leah Reis-Dennis to head of podcasts, in which she’ll lead content, partnerships, and marketing for Audacy’s slate of podcasts. Audacy chief business officer Chris Oliviero says, “Leah hasimg been instrumental in the growth and success of our podcast portfolio, and we’re honored to elevate her into this expanded leadership role. Comrex Previewing FieldLink Codec at NAB Show

Broadcasting technology firm Comrex announces that it will preview FieldLink at this year’s NAB Show taking place in Las Vegas. The company says FieldLink is a new hardware-based IP audio codec that serves as a “press box” codec designed to replace expensive wireless mic/IFB solutions and move audio from sideline reporters efficiently to the pressbox. It uses a directional wireless access point (WAP),img sideline reporters can use their smartphones to send and receive high-quality, low-delay audio using the Comrex FieldTap app. FieldLink has pro-grade audio I/O to deliver sideline audio and allow IFB back to reporters. Setup is simple. By scanning a QR code visible on FieldLink’s front panel display, users can easily set their phones to the secure private Wifi network attached to FieldLink and make connections back to the pressbox. An additional upgrade will be available to allow FieldLink to also be your connection back to the studio. Compatible with all Comrex IP codecs, FieldLink can send and receive audio to/from the public internet, while simultaneously handling sideline reporter audio. At this year’s NAB, Comrex will also highlight new offerings for Gagl, the company’s audio subscription service that allows contributors to connect to Comrex hardware IP audio codecs using equipment such as smartphones or laptops.

WRHU/Salem New York Engineer Produces Broadcasters Video

On the heels of the recent “radio exchange” between members of Hofstra University’s WRHU-FM, New York State community broadcasters, and “89.5FM Bush Radio” – a South African community radio stationimg in Cape Town — in which the broadcasters shared ideas about better serving their communities, the broadcasters came together to record an original song co-written and produced by broadcast engineer Dr. Andy Gladding EdD (WRHU-FM and Salem Media Group New York). The song is performed by DJs from “Bush Radio” and WKZE, Red Hook, New York. See the music video here.

Hillsdale College Students Honored with Students Awards from MAB

Hillsdale College students took first place in six categories in the Michigan Student Broadcast Awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, and WRFH, Hillsdale “Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM” was named College Audio Station of the Year. WRFH general manager Scot Bertram says, “It is exciting to see our students’ work recognized once again. They consistently produce excellent content, and these awards are a testament to their skill and creativity.” WRFH was named College Audio Station of the Year for the third consecutive year and fourth time since 2019. Gate City Withdraws Saga Board Nominees; Critical of Company’s Direction

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Gate City Capital Management LLC revealed it is withdrawing its nominees to the board of Saga Communications as Saga requested. Founder and portfolio manager Michael Melby states, “The continued pursuit of our Nominees would not be in the best interest of Gate City or the Company’s shareholders at this time. Gate City appreciated the opportunity toimg communicate directly with the Company’s management and directors regarding our views and concerns.” Gate City owns an almost 14% stake in Saga. Melby expresses Gate City’s concerns about Saga, saying, “Gate City’s decision to nominate directors was based on our belief that Saga was determined to pursue its Digital Transformation regardless of the negative impact the transformation could have on Saga’s profitability, cash flow, and share price. Our determination was made following careful analysis and nearly nine months of conversations with the Company’s senior leadership and Board. We repeatedly expressed our concerns imgthat Saga lacked the expertise, and the competitive advantages required to succeed in the low-margin and highly competitive digital advertising space. The pursuit of the Digital Transformation would also divert time, attention, and resources away from the Saga’s core broadcast business, where Saga has competitive advantages and earns high incremental margins. Saga also failed to provide investors with any meaningful financial targets or metrics associated with the Digital Transformation including expectations for incremental revenues, costs, margins, and return on investment. Our recommendation that Saga partner with a digitally-savvy company with the capability and experience to execute Saga’s digital strategy without the added costs and risks associated with the transformation was also dismissed.” Melby’s criticism of Saga Communications’ business strategy continues, “In 2024, the Company’s station operating income fell 23.1% year-over-year to $21.1 million, the Company’s operating income fell 79% year-over-year to $2.4 million, and the Company’s operating profit margin fell to 2.1% in 2024 from 10.2% in 2023, a decline of over 800 bps. To make matters worse, this deterioration in financial results occurred during a presidential election year, when Saga should benefit from elevated levels of political spending. Our concern that the pursuit of the Digital Transformation strategy could detract from the Company’s highly profitable broadcast business also appears prescient. On Saga’s Q4 2024 earnings call, the Company noted that it generated $3.3 million in political revenue in 2024. Saga’s 2024 political advertising revenue declined 52% from the $6.9 million generated in 2020 (the last presidential election year) and also fell from the $3.6 million generated in the 2022 midterm election year. The Company’s two largest stations by revenue are located in the battleground states of Ohio and Wisconsin, calling into question the Company’s explanation that Saga’s stations were not in the correct markets. In addition to posting poor financial results, on March 18, 2025, Saga issued a financial filing stating that the Company would be unable to file its 10-K annual report in a timely fashion. This filing further highlights the potential challenges faced by the Company in executing the Digital Transformation.” You can find the full text of Gate City’s filing with the SEC here.

Urban One Cuts Two Hosts from 93.5/107.5 The Fan in Indy

Earlier this week, Urban One dismissed sports talk hosts Andy Sweeney and Jimmy Cook, both on air at “93.5/107.5 The Fan” WIBC-HD2/W228CX/W298BB in Indianapolis. As the Indy Star reports, Sweeneyimg was co-host of the morning drive show with co-host Kevin Bowen. Cook was co-host of the midday “Query & Company” program with Jake Query. In the aftermath, Sweeney posted to X: “Let me say this… I loved covering your teams. The @Pacers are a class act organization and covering an NFL team @Colts was something I wanted. Also, it was great working with super dudes like @KBowen1070 and @MarcD1075. I wish them the best, but they won’t need it.” See the Indy Star’s story here.

The independently syndicated “Armstrong & Getty” show says it added five new affiliate stations thisimg month: KFNX, Phoenix; KMZQ, Las Vegas; KERN, Bakersfield; KSMA, Santa Maria, and WNJD, Cape May, New Jersey. KFNX owner Bill Brady says, “‘Armstrong and Getty’ bring it all: They are funny, knowledgeable, insightful, and always play the hits. They are the prototype of the modern radio talk show. We are thrilled to have them on KFNX. They are a great addition to our lineup.”

Vince Coglianese Broadcasts Trump Interview

Talk host Vince Coglianese – host “The VINCE Show” syndicated by Westwood One and the “VINCE” podcast broadcast an interview with President Donald Trump yesterday afternoon. Coglianese’s programimg is being distributed in the same daypart – 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm ET – as Dan Bongino’s show prior to the latter’s giving up his media role to take on the deputy director at the FBI. Trump addressed the issue of Greenland and Vice President J.D. Vance’s trip there this week, saying, “We have to have that land because it’s not possible to properly defend a large section of this Earth – not just the United States – without it.” The president also addressed the Signal group chat matter, telling Coglianese that it was possibly an innocent error made by a lower-level staffer for national security advisor Mike Waltz. He noted that it did not impact the success of the attack, but that they would determine how the error happened so it would not happen in the future.

Public Broadcasters Grilled at Subcommittee Hearing

PBS CEO Paula Kerger and NPR CEO Katherine Maher testified before the House Subcommittee on Delivering On Government Efficiency yesterday (3/26) during hearing titled, “Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable.” The Hill reports that Maher faced “intense questioning from Republican members over NPR’s ignoring of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal during the 2020img election, its reporting on the origins of the coronavirus in China, and the investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia during his first term. U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Maher, “You guys were 0-for-3 on three of the biggest stories in the country.” Maher was also pressed by U.S. Rep. William Timmons (R-SC) about comments she made before she was CEO of NPR in which she called Donald Trump a sociopath, a racist and deranged and asked how she could helm a news organization with that kind of inherent bias. She replied, “There is strong firewall between me and the newsroom,” and said her political thinking and personal worldview have changed in recent years, adding, “I regret those tweets; I would not tweet them again today.” The story notes that Maher said she “respected” the lawmakers’ concerns and promised NPR is doing more under her watch to “beef up our editorial standards” and “make sure we have more points of view reflected in every story.” Read The Hill’s coverage here.

Urban One Reports Q4 ’24 Net Revenue Down 2.7%

Urban One, Inc reports its operating results from the fourth quarter of 2024 and reveals net revenue was approximately $117.1 million, a decrease of 2.7% from the same period in 2023. The company reported an operating loss of approximately $1.9 million for the quarter, compared to operating income of approximately $6.8 million for the three months ended December 31, 2023. Broadcast and digitalimg operating income was approximately $38.6 million, an increase of 1.7% from the same period in 2023. Net loss was approximately $35.7 million for the quarter, compared to net loss of $11.0 million for the same period in 2023. Urban One CEO and president Alfred C. Liggins, III states, “Our Adjusted EBITDA of $103.5 million came in at the mid-point of guidance, helped by strong political advertising revenues in the radio division. The radio outperformance was offset by declines in both advertising and affiliate revenues at the cable TV segment, as audience delivery continued to underperform expectations. We are however seeing some stabilization in the first quarter cable TV delivery, which should help to mitigate the continuing decline of linear TV subscribers. First quarter core radio revenue demand weakened, with pacings down 13.6%, although the second quarter is showing signs of improvement, with core pacings currently down 1.7%.”

FCC’s Gomez Fires Back at New Commission Policy

FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez addressed the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Legislative Summit on Wednesday (3/26() and spoke about efforts by the FCC and other government entities to “intimidate private companies because of internal labor practices meant to promote fairness in hiring.” She said, “Private businesses all over the country are under attack. Creeping government intervention isimg making companies think twice about the way they describe internal diversity programs. They’re afraid the government may retaliate against them simply because of actions that are responsive to how consumers use their services or choose to buy their products. Sadly, the hard-fought lessons of the civil rights movement are being erased – or worse, distorted – to claim that fairness for all requires discrimination against some. That could not be further from the truth.” Gomez says she’s concerned about the Commission weaponizing  “its regulatory authority to enforce government mandates that seek to eliminate voluntary efforts by private companies to increase fair and equal employment opportunities.”

RTDNA Announces Scholarship and Fellowship Recipients

The RTDNA Foundation announces the recipients of the 2025 scholarship and fellowship program that is awarding more than $35,000 to 14 students and early career journalists. Scholarship and fellowship winners will attend RTDNA25, taking place June 11-13 in New Orleans. RTDNA says, “Since itsimg establishment in 1970, the RTDNA Foundation has provided more than $1 million in scholarships and fellowships to about 600 aspiring journalists, fulfilling its role as the educational and charitable wing of the Radio Television Digital News Association. Some have gone on to become reporters, producers and news directors, covering local and national issues that matter to their communities. Others have ventured into related professions, such as White House speechwriters, media regulatory attorneys and journalism educators. NAB: SBAs Support Local Radio Resolutions

National Association of Broadcasters says that state broadcasters associations representing all 50 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico adopted two resolutions. The first resolution urges members of Congress to support the Local Radio Freedom Act, which opposes any new performance fee on local radio stations.img NAB says, “Local radio stations provide trusted news, sports and entertainment to their communities free of charge, but stations’ ability to do so would be greatly threatened if faced with a new performance tax, on top of the hundreds of millions of dollars local stations already pay each year in copyright and streaming fees.” The second resolution calls on legislators to support the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act that would ensure the continued availability of AM in all newly manufactured vehicles. NAB president and CEO Curtis LeGeyt comments, “On the heels of an incredibly successful State Leadership Conference, where over 560 local TV and radio broadcasters traveled to Washington, DC to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, congressional support for local radio is strong. State broadcaster associations play a pivotal role in our advocacy efforts, and I am proud to see the collective unity behind these resolutions.”

WWO: Study Says Podcast Reach Matches TV

This week, Cumulus Media | Westwood One’s Audio Active Group blog looks at data from the recently published Edison Research project The Infinite Dial. The focus is on podcasting’s rise in reach and the blog points to several takeaways for marketers: 1) Podcasting is now a mass reach media vehicle.img Podcasting is no longer a niche platform lacking scale. Podcasts deserve a larger role in media plans as opposed to “test and learn” experimental buys. 158 million Americans, 55% of persons 12+, are reached monthly. Among persons 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54, monthly reach is now 65% to 73%; 2) It is feasible to consider shifting TV budgets to podcasting given that podcast 18-34 weekly reach (52%) is as big as TV’s (52%); 3) Brands targeting women should give podcasts a starring role in media plans: Podcast female audiences have hit record highs in habituation and reach; 4) Among male demographics, monthly reach is now in the low 70% range; and 5) Adopt agency media legend Arnie Semsky’s “5% solution” to podcasts: Allocate 5% of digital ad budgets to podcasts. WSCR’s Dan Bernstein Fired After Bizarre Social Media Spat

Chicago sports talk host Dan Bernstein is out at Audacy’s sports talk WSCR “670 The Score.” This happens less than a week after Bernstein into a back-and-forth on social media with a follower. In a storyimg by Brandon Contes for Awful Announcing, he writes that Bernstein was taken off of his regular afternoon show with co-host Marshall Harris after threatening to reveal the identities of a follower’s children as retaliation for that person accusing Bernstein of lying about releasing a fish that he had caught and posted a picture of. Bernstein write on social media, “I never respond to trolls, but questioning my sportsmanship and conservation awareness sets me off. Wanna fight? I’m a bad enemy. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr Comments on Swatting

In response to the recent swatting attack on nationally syndicated talk radio host Joe “Pags” Pagliaruloimg in Texas and several other conservative talk personalities, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr posted the following to his X account, “The recent surge in ‘swatting’ attacks against conservatives is a dangerous form of political violence. I’ve been in touch with law enforcement to ensure they have access to the trace back resources that locate a call’s originating point. Report: Cox Media Group Stations Being Shopped

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apollo Global Management, the firm that owns Cox Media Group, isimg employing an investment bank to see if there might be a buyer for the 40 radio and 12 television stations that make up Cox Media Group. Bloomberg reports that other TV groups, including Nexstar Media Group and Gray Media, might be interested in the television stations.

Beasley Reports 2024 Q4 Net Revenue Up 2.3%

Beasley Broadcast Group reports operating results for the fourth quarter of 2024 and for the full year of 2024. For Q4 of 2024, Beasley reports revenue of $67.3 million, an increase of 2.3% over the same period in 2023. The company reports a net loss of $2.06 due to a $98.8 million of non-cash impairment losses. For the full year of 2024 Beasley reports revenue of $240.3 a decline of 2.7% from the full year of 2023.img Beasley CEO Caroline Beasley says, “2024 was a transformative year for Beasley as we took decisive actions to strengthen our balance sheet, streamline our operations, and position the company for long-term success. Through disciplined cost management and strategic capital initiatives, we achieved approximately $20.0 million in annualized expense reductions, improved our leverage profile, imgand enhanced our financial flexibility. Edison Research: Podcast Consumption Reaches New High

Edison Research releases its research project The Infinite Dial 2025 (with support from Audacy, Cumulus Media, and SiriusXM Media) that provides insights into “podcast consumption, online audio trends, in-car audio usage, smart speaker usage, social media behaviors, and other digital media habits.” Some of theimg key findings of this edition of the study include that podcast consumption has reached an all-time high with 70% of Americans age 12+ having listened to a podcast; 51% of those Americans age 12+ having watched a podcast; 73% of Americans age 12+ having consumed a podcast in either audio or video format, representing an estimated 210 million people; and 55% of Americans age 12+ now being monthly consumers. The study also looked at in-car audio use and finds that among americans age 18+ who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month (88%), 40% have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and 33% actively use one of these systems. The New York Festivals 2025 Radio Awards announces the 2025 Radio Awards Shortlist. Audacy Announces Executive Changes

Audacy makes a number of changes to its senior management team beginning with interim CEO Kelli Turner being named permanent president and CEO. In addition to a couple of promotions, the company has parted ways with four of its senior managers as COO Susan Larkin, chief digital officer J.D. Crowley, chief marketing officer Paul Suchman, and general counsel and EVP Andrew Sutor all exit. Promotionsimg include Chris Oliviero rising from market president for New York to chief business officer; Bob Philips shifting from president of networks and multi-market sales to chief revenue officer; and deputy general counsel Mike Dash rising to EVP and general counsel. iHeartMedia and BIN: Black Information Network announced a new podcast series set to debut on March 24 titled, “To Altadena, With Love.” The five-part series focuses on the devastating impact of the Eatonimg fires on the historic Black middle-class community of Altadena, California. The company says, “This groundbreaking series will explore the significance of Altadena, its legacy and the personal stories of survivors and community members who lived through one of the region’s most destructive natural disasters.” The series is hosted by Black Information Network journalist Mimi Brown.

Talk Radio Host Joe Pags Swatted; Armed Police Swarm His Home

Nationally syndicated talk radio host Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo’s home was swatted last week, bringing heavily armed police officers to his home at 2:35 in the morning. Pags recounted the events for his listeners and posted video of the segment to X. In it, says that he’s usually up until 5:00 am and therefore was awake when his cameras app told him there was something outside his house. Hisimg camera app showed the image you see in the photo here – a man who appears dressed as a cop with an AR-15 outside his house. Pags says he quickly called 911, identified himself, told the operator he thought he was being swatted and asked if the police were at his house. After confirming that it was the police, Pags was able to get the officers to stand down and they were assured there was no reason to be there. Pags tells his listeners that the goal of the swatters was to get him to grab his gun and go outside, in which case he likely would have been killed. You can listen to the show segment here.
