Broadcaster Martha Fahnoe Passes

Dimes Media Corporation announces that its chair Martha (Buckley) Fahnoe passed away unexpectedly on July 21. She was the daughter of Richard Dimes Buckley Sr., founder of Buckley Broadcasting. She isim predeceased by her brother Rick Buckley. She founded Dimes Media Corporation with her son Eric Dimes Fahnoe upon the closing of Buckley Broadcasting. Dimes Media, which operates radio stations in San Luis Obispo and King City California, says “Martha grew up in broadcasting beginning in the mailroom of WNEW as a teenager and her success in many capacities was ensured by her engaging personality and interest in her co-workers, clients and the community.” In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in her memory be made to the Broadcasters Foundation of America or The Living Desertin Palm Desert, CA.

Premiere and Patty Steele Launch New Podcast

Premiere Networks and award-winning broadcast radio star Patty Steele announce the launch of “The Backstory with Patty Steele” podcast. The program features Steele as she “enlightens and entertains listeners with a journey through pivotal moments in history and pop culture.” Some of the stories include a look at theim world-famous architect and the mass murders that took place at his home; how bathing suits went from 30 pounds of wet wool to the thong; the original Olympics with athletes competing completely in the nude; and an iconic inventor who actually stole his masterpiece. iHeartMedia, Inc will report its financial results for the quarter ending June 30, 2023 on Tuesday August 8. The company will conduct a conference call at 8:00 am ET, following the release of its earnings announcement to discuss its financial results and business outlook.

The GCN-syndicated “Dr. Daliah Wachs” show joins the program lineup at Alexandra Communications’ news/talk KUJ-AM/K254DK, Walla Walla, Washington in the late night daypart.

Mobile Radio Partners launches a sports betting format on WTOX-AM, Richmond, Virginia using content from VSiN, The Sports Betting Network. The station is being branded “Richmond’s Best Bet, 1480-The Line.” Station general manager Mark Smith comments, “The new format will bring 24-hour sports betting programming to Richmond for the first time. The new station leverages the growing interest in sports betting by covering all sports through the wagering lens. So many markets have embraced sports betting stations and it’s high time that Richmond started delivering the news and analysis folks need with best-in-class content from VSiN.”

NHPR names Travis Boucher chief financial officer. In this role with the public media organization, Boucher will oversee NHPR’s financial and compliance functions and be a strategic partner to NHPR’s board and senior leadership as the organization builds and deploys its resources over the coming years.

TALKERS Celebrates 33rd Year of Publishing

Today begins the 34th year of publishing for TALKERS magazine as a trade journal serving the talk media industry. The first issue rolled off the presses in the form of a tabloid newspaper on Monday July 23, 1990 focusing primarily on talk radio.  Since then it has grown and evolved with the industry to go through severalim format phases including a full color magazine and eventually a daily online operation geared to providing news, advice and opinions to professionals involved in programming, managing, marketing and operating an array of related platforms in what has come to be known as talk media.  This includes most popular forms of spoken-word AM and FM radio, plus online programming, podcasting, cable television and satellite broadcasting. During this period, TALKERS has produced and presented 26 national conventions in New York and another three in Los Angeles. Add to that more than 35 regional, national and international forums about the field and countless radio rows including several at the White House in conjunction with both the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. TALKERS remains and will continue to be a non-partisan proponent of the First Amendment with a great love and passion for talk media’s roots in the century old medium of radio.

Bob & Tom Show’s Ron Sexton Dies at 52

Comic Ron Sexton, a longtime cast member of “The Bob & Tom Show,” died at 52 on Friday (7/21) in Ohio while on tour with his stand-up show. Tom Griswold states, “We are sad to confirm that Ron Sexton, longtime member of the ensemble cast of ‘The Bob & Tom Show,’ died Friday while on tour with his stand-up comedy show. Ronim was known by millions of listeners of ‘The Bob & Tom Show’ for the indelible comedic characters he played on-air, including Donnie Baker, Kenny Tarmac, and Floyd the Trucker, as well as his spot-on celebrity impersonations. Ron was a much-loved colleague and friend, and we will miss him greatly. We send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He made many, many people happy during his more than 20 years with ‘The Bob & Tom Show,’ and we will remember him with love and gratitude.”

Broadcasters Foundation Holds First Media Mixer in NYC

The Broadcasters Foundation of America held its first Media Mixer on Friday (7/21) at the New York City studios of iHeartMedia – hosted by nationally syndicated personality Angela Yee. BFoA says more than 150 broadcasters turned out for the event designed to give up-and-coming professionals in broadcasting the opportunity to network with talent, managers, and executives and bring awareness of the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation. BFoA president Tim McCarthy says, “We are delighted with the large turnout of young professionals to last night’s event. We want to hold similar events in other markets. I want to thank members of our Board, industry leaders, and the talent who made themselves available to young professionals who are just beginning their broadcasting careers. Cumulus Media Promotes Ann Thomas to Program Director for WJR, Detroit

Cumulus Media announces that it is promoting Ann Thomas to program director for heritage news/talk outlet WJR, Detroit. The company says that Thomas becomes the first female program director in the station’s 101-year history. She rises from her previous role as assistant program director and executive producer. Thomas started at WJR as an intern in 1982 and was then hired full-time as producer of a WJR program called, “The Other Side of the News.” She went on to become a WJR news reporter and anchor, winning several Associated Press, United Press International, and Detroit Press Club awards for Breaking News and Auto Negotiations. In 1999, Thomas was named executive producer of the “Paul W. Smith Show.” Thomas also produced the WJR-MSU tailgate shows for 15 years from 2006-2021. She has hosted WJR programs including “The Healthy Woman Show,” “Opportunity Detroit,” “The WJR Gardening Show,” and “Women Who Lead,” which she launched 11 years ago to highlight Michigan women from all walks of life doing great things in the community. Cumulus Media RVP and market manager Steve Finateri says, “Ann Thomas is the heart and soul of WJR and has been deserving of this move for a very long time. Her fingerprints are already all over this heritage, award-winning radio station, but we are all excited to see what the future holds with Ann in the driver’s seat!” At the same time, Cumulus promotes Mike Wheeler from WJR PD to operations manager for Cumulus Detroit/Ann Arbor. Dan Patrick Announces Retirement in 2027

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney reports that sports media personality Dan Patrick announces to his fans thatim he plans to retire from the business in four years at the end of 2027. Patrick’s radio program is nationally syndicated via Premiere Networks and is simulcast via YouTube. The former ESPN personality responded to fans who questioned his decision by saying, “This is a young man’s game. I’m the oldest guy doing this. And I enjoy doing it, but by the end of 2027, that’ll be it. You have my word, so plan accordingly.” Read the SI story here.

Broadcaster Bekah Berger, who began her radio career as an intern in the WPRO-AM, Providence newsroom, isim named co-host of the “The Giovanni in the Morning” show on Cumulus Media’s CHR WPRO-FM. After her internship, Berger joined WPRO-AM as call screener for “The Buddy Cianci Show.” In 2008, she was named promotions director for WPRO-AM and hosted a weekend show called, “This Week in Entertainment With Bekah Berger.” She also served as producer for WPRO-AM’s morning drive “Gene Valicenti Show.”

GBH to Broadcast from NAACP National Convention in Boston

Public media organization GBH is the exclusive public media partner for the NAACP’s 114th National Convention taking place in Boston from July 28 to August 1. In this role, GBH will provide extensive on-site coverage of the gathering with “Boston Public Radio and Basic Black,” the longest-running program on public television focusing on the interests of people of color. “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE,” produced at GBH, will preview a new documentary, “The Busing Battleground,” a telling of the tumultuous integration of the Boston Public Schools through a court-mandated busing plan in the 1970s. GBH CEO Susan Goldberg says, “At GBH, we are committed to covering important events, being present in our community, and representing our audiences, both in the stories we tell and how we tell them.”

Tim Wenger Leading Audacy’s Buffalo Stations

Audacy promotes Tim Wenger to SVP and market manager of its Buffalo market. In this role, Wenger will oversee the market’s portfolio of stations that includes news/talk WBEN-AM, sports talkers WGR-AM and WWKB-AM, plus three music brands. Wenger is taking over for Tim Holly who recently announced his retirement. Wenger worked his way up to this role from the programming side of the business. He launched his radio career as a news reporter and anchor at WBEN in 1986. He subsequently rose to news director, program director and brand manager/operations director for the spoken-word stations. Wenger is a recent inductee into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Long Returns to Bonneville Phoenix to Program Talk Stations; Maurer Upped to KTAR PD

Bonneville Phoenix announces that programming pro Brian Long returns to the company as director of programming operations for the cluster that includes news/talk KTAR-FM, KMVP-FM “Arizona Sports,” and KTAR-imAM “ESPN 620.” Long previously served with Bonneville as PD for sports talk KIRO-AM, Seattle. He was most recently with iHeartMedia San Diego. Bonneville Phoenix SVP and market manager Ryan Hatch says, “We are thrilled to welcome Brian back to the Bonneville family. He is a proven leader who will bring strategic thinking and an innovative imspirit that will grow our market leading news and sports brands.” Long will also serve as PD for KMVP-FM and KTAR-AM. Outkick Reports Strong Audience Growth

Multimedia sports platform OutKick says it has experiences “strong growth” over the past year with Q2 2023 data revealing more than 9 million monthly multiplatform unique visitors, 101 million total multiplatform views (up 45%),im and 112 million total multiplatform minutes (up 60%), according to Comscore data. Outkick founder (and Premiere Networks syndicated talk radio star) Clay Travis states, “OutKick doesn’t shy away from the most pressing topics in American sports today which is why we have continued to expand our audience every quarter.”

FOX News Digital Posts Positive Q2 Audience Data

FOX News Digital reports that it finished the second quarter of 2023 with year-over-year growth that and its continuing lead in the news competitive set with both multiplatform minutes and views, according to data fromimn Comscore. FOX News Digital bested CNN.com and NYTimes.com in both multi-platform total views and multi-platform total minutes. CNN.com still leads the news competitive set in multi-platform unique visitors, but its numbers in this measure were down 2% (120.2 million) while FOX News Digital’s numbers were up 19% (95 million).

Beasley Broadcast Group announces that it will report its 2023 second quarter financial results before the market opens on Thursday, August 3.

The Society of Broadcast Engineers announces that the Robert W. Flanders SBE Engineer of the Year award for 2023 is presented to Joseph Conlon of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and a current member of SBE Chapter 17 Central Minnesota. The James C. Wulliman SBE Educator of the Year award is Andrew Gladding, CBT, of Brooklyn, NY, and a member of SBE Chapter 15 New York City. Gladding has been an SBE Member for eight years and is the secretary of Chapter 15. In his role as adjunct professor for audio production at Hofstra University, he has taken numerous steps to recruit and engage new SBE members by teaching them about the broadcasting business and engineering in particular. He is solely responsible for the addition of 40 student members to Chapter 15.

SiriusXM sports talk personality Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo is making his return to Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, New Jersey, for a special live broadcast of his show on August 4 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This is Russo’s first broadcast at the popular Jersey Shore venue since 2007. He says, “Bar A, I’m back, baby! The summer show was always a blast. I’m excited to be at it again and we’ve got a great show planned on August 4. Love all our Jersey Shore fans!!!”

Salem Announces Five Market Managers Doing Double Duty

Salem Media Group makes changes to its management structure in five markets as market managers currently leading other markets will now also oversee a new, additional market. The company says, “These changes provide some cost savings and will allow Salem’s most seasoned leaders to expand their impact on the performance of the company.” Terry Fahy, regional VP/GM for Los Angeles will now also oversee Oxnard; Steve Brodsky, GM for San Diego, will also manage Honolulu; Dennis Hayes, GM for Portland, will now overseeim Seattle as well; Kevin Isaacs, GM for Cleveland, will now also manage Pittsburgh; and Mark Durkin, regional VP/GM for Sacramento, will also manage Phoenix. This comes months after Carolyn Cassidy was assigned both Tampa and Columbus and John Gallagher began leading Chicago and Little Rock. Salem adds, “In some cases, the former GM will stay on in a sales/sales management role.” Company CEO David Santrella comments, “These changes were made to allow Salem to continue to innovate and invest in our business and to allow the very best leaders to oversee our radio stations.” Salem is also combining the sales efforts of Salem Media Reps and the Salem Web Network with the combined sales team reporting to Mike Reed and Mike DeAmicis at Salem Media Reps. Round Four of June PPM Released

imThe fourth and final round of ratings data from Nielsen Audio’s June 2023 PPM survey has been released for 12 markets including Austin, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Nashville, Providence, Norfolk, Jacksonville, West Palm Beach, Greensboro, Memphis, and Hartford. Nielsen’s June 2023 sweep covered May 25 – June 21. Today, TALKERS magazine managing editor Mike Kinosian presents his Ratings Takeaways from this group of markets. In Milwaukee, iHeartMedia news/talk WISN remains ranked #1 in the market even after losing four-tenths to finish with a 9.8 share, while Good Karma Brands’ crosstown news/talk WTMJ leaps 1.3 shares for 9.5 share finish that lifts it to the #2 rank. In Providence, Cumulus Media’s news/talk WPRO-AM/WEAN-FM tacks on seven-tenths for a 5.9 share finish but stays in the #7 spot, while iHeartMedia’s crosstown news/talk WHJJ is up one-tenths for a 0.5 share and remains ranked #17. McDowell & Kemp Exit KTCK, Dallas

According to the Dallas Morning News, the early afternoon duo of Dan McDowell and Jake Kemp have resigned their positions with Cumulus Media sports talk outlet KTCK-AM/FM, Dallas after being unable to come to termsim on new contracts to continue “The Hang Zone” show. The report indicates that Cumulus and the two hosts had been negotiating for the better part of seven months on new, long term deals but McDowell & Kemp and the company were split over digital media projects that the two wanted to pursue beyond their work with “The Ticket.” They resigned on Tuesday (7/17). Cumulus has not officially named a new host or hosts for the 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm daypart.
