Connoisseur Media to Sell 15 Missouri Stations

Just a day after announcing that it is selling its three-station Bakersfield, California cluster to local operator Frequency Broadcasting, Inc, Connoisseur Media announces that it is entering into an agreement to sell its 15 radio stations in Missouri to Carter Media LLC and Carter Media Too LLC. Carter Media is based in Carrollton, Missouri which is about halfway between Kansas City andimg Columbia. The stations are in small markets and include: KAAN-AM/FM, Bethany; KWIX-FM, Cairo; KKWK-FM and KMRN-AM, Cameron; KIRK-FM, Macon; KTCM-FM, Madison; KRES-FM and KWIX-AM, Moberly; KJEL-FM and KBNN-AM, Lebanon; and KFBD-FM, KOZQ-FM, KJPW-AM, and KIIK-AM in Waynesville. Connoisseur Media founder and CEO Jeffrey Warshaw says, “These Missouri markets did not fit into our long-term plans. We are pleased to have found a trusted buyer in Miles Carter and his family-oriented company.” Carter comments, “We have wanted to expand for a while and when the opportunity came, we were eager to talk with Connoisseur. As we look toward the new markets, our mission remains the same: bring trustworthy local news, agriculture coverage, and community-focused storytelling to areas that need a stronger voice. Vicky Moore Exits KNX-AM/FM Los Angeles

After 22 years as a news anchor on Audacy’s all-news KNX-AM/FM, Los Angeles, Vicky Moore left the station last Friday. During her on-air farewell, Moore stated, “I really love radio. Because radio is about community. At a time when the phone in our pocket and in our hands right now creates distance between us, and the politics divide us, the AI make us questioning what is real,img people here at KNX all around me are real. And they are people who live and work in this community. Brian Douglas and Sioux-Z Jessup, our traffic team, Sabina – they care about people driving in from places like Santa Clarita. Or when you hear sirens on the westside or Monrovia, we here at KNX are curious too! TALKERS Exclusive: Why AM Radio Still Matters – And Why Cities Must Step Up to Save It

imgFor most of my life, the sound of an AM signal has been my constant companion. Long before I ever spoke into a microphone professionally, I was the kid hiding under the covers with a transistor radio, slowly turning the dial, discovering voices, ideas, communities, and worlds far beyond my bedroom. AM radio didn’t just shape my career – it shaped who I am.

That’s why, as both a lifelong AM radio listener and a longtime AM broadcaster (77WABC and WNYM-AM “970 The Answer”), I’m introducing legislation in the New York City Council to require that all City-owned and City-contracted vehicles continue to include functioning AM receivers. I’m proud of my work in government, but this one is personal. Because AM radio isn’t just entertainment or nostalgia – it’s infrastructure. It’s public safety. It’s the backbone of our emergency communications system. And it’s in danger.

When Everything Else Fails, AM Radio Doesn’t  

We don’t have to imagine what happens when modern communications collapse. We’ve lived it.

On September 11, 2001, when cell networks jammed almost immediately, millions of New Yorkers turned to AM radio for news, instructions, and reassurance.

In the 2003 Northeast Blackout, AM signals were among the very few communications systems still functioning across multiple states.

During Superstorm Sandy, when much of the region lost power and internet for days, AM remained a critical lifeline for emergency updates, evacuation information, and weather alerts.

These weren’t theoretical scenarios. They were real moments of crisis – and AM radio proved its value every single time.

When the lights go out, AM stays on. When cell networks are overwhelmed, AM cuts through. When the internet fails, AM continues broadcasting. It is the most resilient form of mass communication ever created, and FEMA and the National Weather Service still rely on AM frequencies for a reason: they reach people when nothing else can.

AM Radio Is Still the Soundtrack of America 

Beyond emergencies, AM radio remains woven into the cultural fabric of this country. It’s where Americans talk to each other – about politics, sports, faith, overnight oddities, neighborhood issues, and everything in between. It’s one of the last places where anyone can call in, join the conversation, and be part of a community.

The same AM dial that once carried the voices announcing D-Day, the moon landing, and the gritty street reporting of New York legends still carries the news, opinions, and debates that shape American life today. There is something uniquely democratic about the AM band: it is accessible, unpretentious, inexpensive, and available to everyone.

That’s worth preserving. Especially now, as some automakers – particularly in the electric vehicle space – phase AM radios out of new models, citing interference or cost concerns.

Cities and States Can Lead Where Washington Waits 

Congress is considering the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act,” and I support it wholeheartedly. But federal action can take time. Cities and states can move faster.

New York City’s legislation can be a model:

  • If municipalities require AM receivers in the vehicles they procure…
  • If state governments do the same for their fleets…
  • And if enough jurisdictions stand firm…

Automakers will have no choice but to keep AM radio in every vehicle they sell.

Government can’t – and shouldn’t – tell anyone what to listen to. But we absolutely can ensure that the option to listen still exists. And that, when disaster strikes, the public can rely on a system proven over nearly a century to work under the toughest circumstances imaginable.

The Signal Must Go On 

AM radio isn’t a relic. It’s a lifeline. It’s a civic space. It’s one of the last great mediums that belongs to the people. As someone who owes much of his career – and much of his identity – to those airwaves, I feel a responsibility to protect them.

By acting locally here in New York City, I hope we inspire communities across the country to do the same. If we want the AM dial to be there for the next blackout, the next storm, or the next unthinkable moment, the time to act is now.

Because when everything else goes silent, AM radio still speaks.

And we need to make sure it always will.

Monday Memo: The Power of Pause in Local Radio

imgIn an industry built on speed – breaking news, live liners, commercial deadlines – “pause” can feel like a luxury radio can’t afford. But Kevin Cashman’s The Pause Principle: Step Back to Lead Forward (Wiley) argues the opposite: pausing isn’t weakness, it’s a competitive advantage. For local radio leaders, the message couldn’t be timelier.

Cashman defines pause as the conscious act of stepping back to gain perspective before moving forward. Leaders who constantly react miss opportunities for growth and innovation. Those who pause, he argues, engage with more clarity, creativity, and authenticity.

Think about the daily grind in local radio. The PD is juggling ratings pressure, expense challenges, talent issues, and a half-dozen urgent emails from corporate. The sales manager is chasing month-end, writing copy on deadline, and fielding calls from advertisers. In that swirl, it’s tempting to equate motion with progress. Yet, as Cashman warns, constant motion without reflection leads to burnout, blind spots, and missed chances to connect.

For broadcasters, pause can take many forms:

  • Programming: Instead of cranking out another promo, take time to ask if the message really resonates with the community. What do listeners need from us right now?
  • Sales: Before pitching another rate card, pause to explore the client’s true business challenge. That deeper understanding can unlock bigger, longer-term partnerships.
  • Leadership: In staff meetings, pause to let quieter voices contribute. The next big idea might come from someone who usually doesn’t speak up.

Cashman links pause to authenticity. When leaders slow down enough to be present, they foster trust. In local radio, where credibility is everything, that authenticity builds loyalty with both audiences and advertisers.

He also reminds us that pause is not about inaction. It’s about deliberate action. A well-timed pause before responding to a crisis on-air, before agreeing to a questionable promotion, or before rushing through a strategic decision can be the difference between a misstep and a breakthrough.

For local stations, the takeaway is clear: The pace isn’t going to slow down. The emails will keep coming, the ratings will keep posting, and the deadlines will keep looming. But leaders who carve out moments of pause will not only preserve their sanity – they’ll make better decisions, inspire their teams, and serve their communities more meaningfully.

Pause. Reflect. Then lead forward.

WJR, Detroit Legend Warren Pierce Dies at 82

Warren Pierce, legendary WJR-AM, Detroit personality, died on Friday (10/31) at the age of 82. Pierce served with WJR for almost 40 years and, according to the Detroit Free Press, “was saidimg to have interviewed tens of thousands of celebrities, authors, politicians and other assorted newsmakers during his long radio career.” The Free Press obit states, “He filled a variety of roles for WJR across the decades beginning in the 1970s. Whether hosting a weekday morning or afternoon slot or doing a weekend shift, he drew fans with his friendly, upbeat style and filled ‘The Warren Pierce Show’ with a mix of interviews, movie reviews, news and weather.  A dedicated fan of University of Michigan football, Pierce also did sideline reporting for WJR’s coverage of Wolverines games during the era of coach Bo Schembechler.” He left WJR in 1993 and joined WJBK-TV, Detroit as a morning news anchor. Civic Media Host Jane Matenear Announces Retirement

Wisconsin radio personality current host of “Matenaer On Air” on several of Civic Media’s news/talk stations, Jane Matenaer, announces her retirement after 44 years in the business. She says, “When I started my radio career, my goal was to be a ‘cool, nighttime rock chick.’img Tragically, I was none of those things. Fortunately, I had the support of those who believed I had potential and encouraged me to follow a slightly different path — to morning radio. And while I never envisioned eventually moving from music to talk radio, the transition has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and these last three years at Civic Media have been the proudest of my 40-plus year career.” Prior to joining Civic Media, Matenaer served with Good Karma Brands’ news/talk WTMJ, Milwaukee in the newsroom and in morning drive. KOA, Denver Officially Unveils New Morning Lineup

iHeartMedia Denver confirms the news shared on social media by talk host Ross Kaminsky that TALKERS reported last week. On Monday, November 10, KOA will debut the “Ross Kaminsky on the News, with Jeana Gondek,” program from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. The showimg follows the 5:00 am hour of “Colorado’s Morning News” anchored by Gondek. Michael Brown, former FEMA Administrator and nationally syndicated host of “The Situation with Michael Brown,” moves from sister KHOW to the 9:00 am to 12:00 noon daypart. KFAB, Omaha Talk Host Gary Sadlemyer Announces Retirement from Full-Time Gig

iHeartMedia Omaha announces that longtime “NewsRadio 1110 KFAB” personality Gary Sadlemyer is retiring from full-time radio and his daily morning show on December 12. Sadlemyer, who began with the station in 1976, has anchored “KFAB’s Morning News” for moreimg than three decades. During his career, he hosted the first live, daily talk show in KFAB’s 100-year history and served several years as the station’s program director. He was also the voice of Nebraska Cornhusker football from 1980-1995. He says, “Time sure flies when you’re havin’ fun. Since I was a kid growing up in Minnesota, I had a passion for radio. It’s just like anything else, kids who dream about being a doctor or whatever; mine was radio.” KFAB says that Sadlemyer’s on-air partners for the past quarter-century – Jim Rose and Lucy Chapman – will remain as part of the station’s morning drive commitment to providing news, weather, traffic, sports and compelling conversations about the issues important to the community. The station says that KFAB listeners will still hear plenty of Gary Sadlemyer on the station as he’ll still work to provide personalized content for station advertisers, and pop in to hang out or be a fill-in host on the morning show from time to time.

Former KYW, Philadelphia Anchor Harry Donahue Dies

Audacy reports that former longtime KYW, Philadelphia anchor Harry Donahue died at age 77 after a battle with cancer. The company says, “Donahue joined KYW Newsradio as a freelanceimg reporter in 1974 and became an anchor in 1979, beginning a 35-year run as a morning drive and sports anchor. Countless Philadelphians came to know Donahue’s voice as he brought the news, traffic, weather, and much-longed-for snow days over the airwaves in his time at the station. He was also a fixture in the city’s sports radio scene, doing play-by-play for the Philadelphia Stars — the city’s USFL team in the 1980s — and was the TV and radio voice of Temple football and basketball for more than two decades.” Donahue retired from KYW in 2014 and was promptly inducted into the KYW Newsradio Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Connoisseur Media’s news/talk KTSA-AM, San Antonio raised $165,601 during its 18th Annual KTSA Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner Radiothon. The funds support the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner, considered the largest Thanksgiving event in the United States and founded by San Antonio restaurateur Raul Jimenez 46 years ago. The annual event has grown over the years and now feeds more than 25,000 people in downtown San Antonio each Thanksgiving Day. KTSA says the event provides a warm holiday meal – and a sense of family – to elderly residents, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and anyone in need of community and care. imgThe world of blogs and vlogs has been loaded with largely erroneous news of MTV closing. New owner, Paramount Global, is searching for divisions showing no growth. If MTV is now a liability, it may be a target for a shutdown.

Yes, MTV is closing five of its music channels in the UK and Ireland: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. The channels will cease broadcasting at the end of 2025, with the final day of transmission being December 31. This decision is due to shifting viewing habits towards streaming platforms and cost-cutting measures by the parent company, Paramount Global. MTV HD will remain on air but will shift focus from music videos to reality programming.

However, MTV U.S. is not closing. MTV in the United Kingdom IS. It is closing by December 31, 2025. They also run MTV HD in the UK, that channel remains open. Two missing letters, U and K, caused an explosion of misinformation.

KFI, Los Angeles Talk Host Mo’ Kelly Out in iHeart RIFs

The Los Angeles Daily News reports that as the nationwide reduction in force taking place at iHeartMedia is claiming evening talk host Mo’ Kelly, his producer Tawala Sharp, and station imaging director Clay Roe. Columnist Richard Wagoner writes that in initial reports, ratings had been cited as the cause for the changes but says he doesn’t believe that to be the case. “Rather,img it appears that allowing the former programmer to resign, firing half the news department, and pulling back on advertising and marketing didn’t work the ratings magic they originally had hoped for. In my opinion, KFI has seemed rudderless since Robin Bertolucci left the programming spot last November. The current programmer Brian Long, meanwhile, is also in charge of KLAC (570 AM) and KEIB (1150 AM), but with no time, a limited budget, and a decimated news department, the result is what it is. I don’t blame him at all. For his part, O’Kelly is keeping it positive, posting on Facebook, ‘All jobs end. It is not our lives or our health. Perspective is paramount. Mansour has been with the station for the past 18 years, most recently as senior executive in audio and digital marketing. He posted to social media, “What a ride it’s been. iHeartMedia announced today that Rich Davis is promoted to SVP of programming forimg Minneapolis and program director of KEEY FM. The Twin Cities cluster of stations includes news/talk KTLK and sports talk KXFM-FM “KFAN.” This move comes as Gregg Swedberg transitions to a new strategic advisor role with the company. KXEL-AM Broadcasts “Iowa’s Roast & Ride” Veteran’s Benefit

NRG Media’s news/talk KXEL-AM, Waterloo/Cedar Rapids, Iowa broadcast from the 10th annual “Iowa’s Roast & Ride” at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on Saturday (10/11). The event is sponsored by Mission Iowa to support Iowa-based veterans causes. Pictured above is KXEL host Jeff Stein (left) with U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (right). UPDATE: Conservative Media Factions Fighting Each Other Over Administration Approval

Since TALKERS ran the following story yesterday (10/9), we learned about another angle to this story and have updated it.

There is no unity for the various conservative media outlets fighting for both viewers/listeners and the approval of the Trump Administration. Since 2016 it’s been widely reported that President Donald Trump watches FOX News Channel constantly. But a recent interview with Donald Trump Jr. by Chris Salcedo on Newsmax TV indicates that, at least for the president’simg eldest son, FNC is in the doghouse. Newsmax published an account of the interview which quotes Trump Jr. saying, “Honestly, I don’t watch it anymore because it is so ridiculous. They try so hard to be unbiased that they’re actually biased against conservatives at this point. But this shouldn’t be surprising. These are networks that banned me for two-and-a-half. I’m barely on anymore. I know my father was banned.” However, TALKERS has learned that Donald Trump Jr. appeared on FOX News Channel four times recently – on August 13 and September 3, 11, and 12. He told Salcedo img“FOX’s approach has left conservatives silenced while Democrats and establishment figures get free rein.” The president recently complained about FNC in a post on Truth Social in which he singled out White House correspondent Peter Doocy for talking to Arizona Senator Mark Kelly about his healthcare agenda. He wrote, “Why is Fox News and Peter Doocy putting on Democrat Senator Mark Kelly to talk about, totally unabated or challenged, Healthcare?” SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly recently complained about FOX News Channel’s coverage of Charlie Kirk’s slaying, saying, “It’s really bothering me how FOX News is talking about Charlie, like he was theirs — he wasn’t. It’s a lie. Just stop.”

Sean Casey Goes Solo in Mornings at WCBM

WCBM, Baltimore morning drive personality Bruce Elliott is stepping away from the “Theimg Morning Drive with Casey & Elliott” after almost six years co-hosting the program with Sean Casey. WCBM announces that the program is being re-branded as “Casey & Company” and will feature newscaster Maggie Hunter, the “king of all traffic” Chuck Whitaker, sportscaster Gary Stein and executive producer Kristen Haegerich. Elliott originally joined the program as a part-time guest in 2015 before rising to co-host in 2019.
