NAB Goes to Bat for Removal of Ownership Caps

The National Association of Broadcasters is testifying on behalf of over-the-air broadcasters who would like to see the Federal Communications Commission’s radio and television station ownership caps eliminated. In lengthy testimony regarding the 2022 Quadrennial Regulatory Review – Review of the Commission’s Broadcast Ownership Rules and Other Rules Adopted  Pursuant to Section 202 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, NAB says that, unlike those arguing to keep or even strengthen ownership caps, those asking for their removal are providing real-world testimony. The NAB writes, “They documented in detail the vastimg competition local radio stations today face for audiences and vital advertising revenues from online and satellite content providers and digital ad platforms not subject to any comparable restrictions on their scale and scope; the dire negative effects that consumer and advertiser substitution of competing digital audio content and advertising for traditional radio has had on the listenership and advertising revenues garnered by local radio stations, including in mid-sized and small markets; and how the retention of asymmetric ownership restrictions has prevented radio broadcasters from gaining local scale to take advantage of important economic efficiencies, obtain investment capital, and better compete for audiences and advertising revenues, and thus enhance – or even maintain – their provision of news, emergency information, and valued entertainment and sports programming in local communities across the country at no cost to the public.”  Responding to testimony from musicFirst Coalition and the Future of Music Coalition – referred to as the Coalitions – NAB writes, “First, the fact that the Coalitions continue to hold themselves out as protectors of small, local independent broadcasters not just borders on the absurd but crosses over into full-blown absurdity. The Coalitions represent the interests of the music industry, which is dominated by three consolidated international record labels. Compared to even the largest radio station groups, the giant record labels are the 800-pound gorillas of the music world. Those three labels earn billions more in revenue than the approximately 11,000 full-power commercial AM/FM stations combined. As NAB earlier reported, the three major music companies jointly generated about $2.9 million per hour in 2023. In remarkable contrast, in 2023 and 2024 the vast majority of radio stations garnered less – and often much less – than $2.9 million per year in advertising revenues. Needless to say, the Coalitions have never explained how local radio stations earning such low levels of revenue (and even lower, if any, profits) are supposed to keep talented employees and provide high quality programming, including popular music, sports, and informational programming, such as weather updates and emergency information, OTA and free to the public without achieving increased local scale, greater economic efficiencies, and more robust ad revenues. Report: Giuliani Suing WABC’s Catsimatidis

The New York Post reports that Rudy Giuliani — who previously hosted a daily show at Red Apple Media’s WABC, New York — is suing the station and owner John Catsimatidis over his exit from WABC. Catsimatidis tellsimg the Post that he’s “been left with ‘tears in my eyes’ amid a bitter feud with his longtime ‘brother’ Rudy Giuliani — which escalated when the former mayor filed suit against him Monday.”  He tells the Post, “I’m very, very disappointed in my friend right now… I always supported him during his tough times.” Giuliani alleges in his suit that he was fired for going to bat for his co-host Dr. Maria Ryan for what he alleged was WABC’s wage-based sex discrimination against her. Ryan is also suing the station for wage-based sex discrimination. Meanwhile, regarding Giuliani, Catsimatidis tells the Post, “We didn’t fire him — we suspended him pending a cooling-off period, Friday to Monday. SABO SEZ: The Fine Art of Talking with Talent

imgTalk show hosts are not motivated or driven like disk jockeys or salespeople. Most general managers have never managed talk show hosts. Few program directors have managed talk show hosts. My career has been blessed with daily exchanges with the best talk show hosts in history. Here are some suggestions I would like to share on how to have a superior relationship with talk stars.

• Listen to the show. Talk hosts are performers committing an unnatural act. They are on a stage with no audience. They hear no applause, little immediate feedback, and this leads to paranoia. Was that topic good? Was the joke funny? You’re the audience.

• Give one “note” at a time. Whatever method you use to motivate a salesperson, do the opposite with on-air talent. Talk talent cannot work harder. They are working as hard as they possibly can every moment. You don’t have to motivate them to go on more sales calls. The motivation comes from telling a host what you enjoyed – what you thought was fun or funny. Compliments won’t make them take it easy; it will make them want more compliments – applause. Applause is the motivation.

You may hear several elements on a show that could be improved. Keep the list to yourself. Select the most urgent item that could be improved and share that one and only that one.  Bring up another suggestion next week. Offering more than one “repair” can be devastating. Surround all suggestions with many compliments.  It works.

• Unless a talent posts under your station’s actual social media account, their social media posts are frankly none of your business. Facebook is just not as important – not as your station. Let it go.

• No other entertainer has as hard a job as a radio talk show host.  Talk show hosts have to create multiple hours from scratch. Actors on a sitcom need to learn 22 minutes of script – script they didn’t write; 11 writers did that for them. How much are you paying for writers for your talk shows? Oh! Entertainers in other media have production assistants, interns, writers, coaches, dressers, rehearsals. How much support staff do your hosts have? Oh! Talk show hosts perform a daily miracle for your company. Lunch barter isn’t enough.

Retired Radio Industry Legend Bob Shannon Creates Powerful AI Song About Minnesota Strife

Former 20-year TM Productions creative and marketing executive, Bob Shannon has written and produced – with the help of AI – a compelling ballad about the tragic drama playing out in Minnesota titled, “When theimg Circus Came to Town.”  The Minneapolis-based former DJ, programmer and radio exec tells TALKERS, “In full disclosure, this song was created on suno.com using V5.  The lyrics are all mine, and the orchestration is mine too by virtue of having given all of the instructions to create the track. Regardless of how all the controversy about artificial intelligence plays out, I am releasing this opinionated and highly emotional song purely as an expression of my free speech and artistic expression – not for commercial marketing purposes.”

Shannon continues, “Minneapolis is torn apart, and I see that it’s happening all across the country in relation to the actions of ICE. For the record, I am for a good immigration policy in this country, however the actions of this brutish force neither constitute good policy nor go anywhere towards solving our problem. As a personal note, my housekeeper’s sister-in-law was arrested by ICE at her house yesterday (1/8) morning at 6:00 am with no warrant and no reason… and taken away from her children, who were left alone. For that reason, I was compelled to create this. When my original words were complete, I went to Suno.com, the much discussed Artificial Intelligence music creator, and typed in specific music prompts about instrumentation (piano with bari-saxophones highlights), tempo (slow and evocative; a story song), key and vocal styles (I selected a single male baritone in G major). Then I instructed Suno to create an instrumentation that sonically conveyed a somber sense of sadness, loss, and deep introspection, with instructions to mix the lyrics high in the final mix.”

Shannon concludes, “My words came from a disbelieving head, from a broken heart, and from the pit of my stomach. This was my humanity shining through, and it exposed my raw and real feelings. But AI has no feelings; it’s just an algorithm that provides untrained musicians with a tool to turn original lyrics into songs. Some say that’s cheating, but that’s a discussion for another day.

CES2026: Is Your Elevator Speech Too Long?

imgWe sell advertisers the attention we earn, and earning it has never been tougher. When we design client stations’ billboards, we’re not “writing a 60” or “a 30,” or even “a 10.” It’s a one-second spot. At a glance, someone driving needs to understand what the station delivers, and why to listen.

Showcase events here are well-catered and open bar (Media Relations 101). So, as we roam exhibits, both hands are already full, a challenge for exhibitors hoping we’ll stop, take a tchotchke, and take-in what they’re rolling-out. So I’m struck by how well the large-font messages on their booth signage distills whassup.

Michael Reagan Dies at 80

Longtime talk radio host and conservative media personality Michael Reagan, the eldest son of President Ronald Reagan, died on Sunday (1/4) at age 80. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute announced his death in a post on the social media saying, “Michaelimg Reagan lived a life shaped by conviction, purpose, and an abiding devotion to President Reagan’s ideals.” Reagan began his talk radio career in the late 1980’s first doing commentary on KABC, Los Angeles and then hosting his own show on KSDO, San Diego. For years his radio program was distributed nationally by Radio America and then by Premiere Networks. At the time of his death, Reagan was serving as a columnist for Newsmax. TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison says, “Michael Reagan was one of the pioneering talents that launched news/talk radio to new levels of achievement and influence in the 90s, in addition to forging a successful decades-spanning career as a host and commentator.  From a media industry standpoint, he was a self-made man, never leaning on his famous family connection as an advantage. Off the air, he was a regular guy. On the air, he was just plain good.”

A 20th Century Rulebook Officiating a 2026 Game

imgEvery media creator knows this moment. You are building a segment, you find the clip that makes the point land, and then the hesitation kicks in. Can I use this? Or am I about to invite a problem that distracts from the work itself?

That question has always lived at the center of fair use. What has changed is not the question, but the context around it. Over the past year, two federal court decisions involving AI training have quietly clarified how judges are thinking about copying, transformation, and risk in a media environment that looks nothing like the one for which these rules were originally written.

Fair use was never meant to be static. Anyone treating it as a checklist with guaranteed outcomes is working from an outdated playbook. What we actually have is a 20th century rulebook being used to officiate a game that keeps inventing new positions mid-play. The rules still apply. But how they are interpreted depends heavily on what the technology is doing and why.

That tension showed up clearly in two cases out of the Northern District of California last summer. In both, the courts addressed whether training AI systems on copyrighted books could qualify as fair use. These were not headline-grabbing decisions, but they mattered. The judges declined to declare AI training inherently illegal. At the same time, they refused to give it a free pass.

What drove the analysis was context. What material was used. How it was ingested. What the system produced afterward. And, critically, whether the output functioned as a replacement for the original works or something meaningfully different. Reading the opinions, you get the sense that the courts are no longer talking about “AI” as a single concept. Each model is treated almost as its own actor, with its own risk profile.

A simple medical analogy helps. Two patients can take the same medication and have very different outcomes. Dosage matters. Chemistry matters. Timing matters. Courts are beginning to approach AI the same way. The same training data does not guarantee the same behavior, and fair use analysis has to account for that reality.

So why should this matter to someone deciding whether to play a 22-second news clip?

Because the courts relied on the same four factors that govern traditional media use. Purpose. Nature. Amount. Market effect. They did not invent a new test for AI. They applied the existing one with a sharper focus on transformation and substitution. That tells us something important. The framework has not changed. The scrutiny has.

Once you see that, everyday editorial decisions become easier to evaluate. Commentary versus duplication. Reporting versus repackaging. Illustration versus substitution. These are not abstract legal concepts. They are practical distinctions creators make every day, often instinctively. The courts are signaling that those instincts still matter, but they need to be exercised with awareness, not habit.

The mistake I see most often is treating fair use as permission rather than analysis. Fair use is not a shield you invoke after the fact. It is a lens you apply before you hit publish. The recent AI cases reinforce that point. Judges are not interested in labels. They are interested in function and effect.

Fair use has always evolved alongside technology. Printing presses, photocopiers, home recording, digital editing, streaming. AI is just the newest stress test. The takeaway is not panic, and it is not complacency. It is attention.

If you work in the media today, the smart move is to understand how the rulebook is being interpreted while you are busy playing the game. The rules still count. The field just looks different now.

CES2026: Come for the Gadgets, Stay for the Power Struggle

Now, Artificial Intelligence is cracking-down on E-commerce return fraud. In 2025, scammers cost us consumers an estimated seventy-six-and-a-half billion dollars, by applying for a product refund, then sending back something else of less value, like a cheap knock-off that can’t be resold. 

“Happy Returns” is a UPS-owned company accepting no-box and no-label returns…which scammers LOVE, because it offers immediate refunds. So a new Artificial Intelligence tool called “Return Vision” will flag suspicious returns by analyzing patterns — early or frequent return requests, linked email addresses and past suspicious activity that could evade human detection. So, scammers, no matter how-quick-you-click, AI is watching.

When U.S. senators show up here, you know that CES isn’t just a gadget expo. 

Broadband access is the new oxygen, and Artificial Intelligence is quietly creeping into the background of almost everything we do. Washington now sees consumer technology as a policy issue, impacting jobs, national security, and the USA economy. So lawmakers and high-ranking government officials come to CES to get face‑to‑face with companies building the tools they may soon be regulating; and to talk about new rules for how AI is used in phones, cars, and workplaces. 

Tech companies want a say in those rules — so this is where the negotiations happen. Most CES coverage you see features shiny new gadgets, but the real action here is the growing partnership — and sometimes tension — between Big Tech and Big Government.

SABO SEZ: The Myth of Mentorship

imgAdvice columns blanketing sites like LinkedIn, the Skimm, and Forbes 2.0 – aimed at recent graduates – encourage their readers to seek and bond with an at-work mentor.  After years of skimming “5 bullet” articles, I have reached the tipping point and I’m not going to take it anymore: Seeking a mentor as a career strategy is horrible advice. Just horrible.

Here’s what I experienced. My first job out of Syracuse University was at RKO Radio in Manhattan. An FM. OMG. The job was promotional support and a weekend talk show. After that, NBC local, ABC network, NBC corporate, ABC corporate… all before I was 30. No mentor.

Seek-a-mentor articles are usually aimed at women. It is even worse advice for women. Here’s why:

1. No one wants to be your mentor out of kindness and heavenly points. They only want to be your mentor if you are wired to someone powerful. Someone you can tell how wonderful they are to you

2. Your mentor’s reputation becomes yours! If your mentor is thought a jerk or is fired out of general hatred, you will be fired pretty soon. At NBC, the perception was that NBC CEO Fred Silverman was my mentor. I was terminated about a week after Fred left the building. The reason I was given by my direct report was, “You were too closely associated with Fred.” Fact: I spoke to Fred once during my three-year NBC tenure. (Much later Fred and I became close friends and how lucky I was!)

3. The mentee’s expectations are always too broad. Each of us is good at one or two skills. “mentor” implies a much wider menu of advice than is realistic.

4. One day, the mentor will be proven wrong on a key issue and the mentee will be very confused.

Best advice ever: You have no friends at work. Co-workers, yes. Work-wife? Work-husband? No, no, no!

The greatest gift you can give a co-worker is a request for advice. Each co-worker has strengths. Identify those strengths and tap into those. One request of a colleague is flattering. Ten requests for help is a sign of weakness and you will be eaten.

In any business, especially “glamour” businesses, your goal is to not be eaten by people jealous of you.  You could be eaten for any reason because the jobs are sparse and security is mercurial.

Obviously, a job is a job. It is not a social club. Early in a person’s work life, it is tempting to make the workplace a surrogate family. That could get you eaten. Do your job. Go home.

Brandon Tierney Transitions to Streaming Show

Former WFAN, New York sports talk host Brandon Tierney has launched his streamingimg sports talk show just a couple of weeks after being ousted from WFAN due to the return of Craig Carton to that station’s afternoon daypart. Tierney and co-host Sal Licata were let go on December 19. Tierney’s new show “BT Unleashed” is streamed on YouTube and other platforms. Tierney tells the Brooklyn Reporter, “I thought it was a pretty easy decision. I felt the iron was hot. I certainly felt a desire for more of my work and I wanted to get right back out there. People understand that it was an abrupt ending at the FAN and that this is a pretty dramatic transformation.” See the Brooklyn Reporter story here.

imgNetwork TV often delivers Nielsen hashmarks. No viewers! The no numbers reports started coming in over 20 years ago and they met with silence. Often on Holiday nights, long weekends, NBC, CBS, ABC or FOX delivered no measurable audience. Simultaneously, online video stars were attracting millions of views. In 2007, the media world witnessed the audience shift from broadcast TV to online video. In the following years, media buyers made the definition of a bad investment: Between the time a buy was placed on network TV to the day of air, the audience diminished. Every month. Year after year.

Last week, YouTube entered the golden phase: Laggards. There has been a misperception that YouTube viewers skewed young. That was never true. Their viewership demographic has always matched the demographic spread of America. That means month after month for 20 years, YouTube has been embraced by all demographics at higher and higher rates. Now YouTube has scored the final 10% of adopters: Laggards.

YouTube Wins the Oscars

The Oscars. A major ratings-generating, newsworthy event on YouTube. In Variety, questions were asked. The wrong questions: How will advertising be handled? Will there be a new category for Influencers? On demand? Wrong questions.

The answer is: The Oscars are on YouTube!  Game over for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX. The final segment of the population that frequented broadcast TV will now come to YouTube. The Oscars were the most efficient way to appeal to the laggards.

BONUS: The Oscars announcement just mentioned a key part of the deal: The entire library of the Academy of Arts and Sciences will be uploaded to YouTube. Hundreds of thousands of films from around the world, of all genres coming to YouTube.

And what was the deal? How much did Google pay? It doesn’t matter. Google’s challenge is how to get rid of all of their cash!

The Oscars will be on YouTube. Mark the date. The media landscape has changed forever.

KYW, Philadelphia Wraps 58th Annual Newstudies Program

Audacy’s heritage all-news KYW-AM/FM, Philadelphia recently concluded its 58th annual Newstudies program in which 102 high school students from across the Greater Philadelphia area had the opportunity to learn at news radio station. The program finished culminated with a graduation ceremony at Temple University on December 13. Since 1968, KYW Newsradio has offered high school students the opportunity to learn about a major market radio station through the Newstudies student reporter program. For four Saturdays, students learned news writing, reporting, ethics and interviewing skills from station managers, editors, reporters, anchors and guest speakers. Each student researched, wrote, and recorded a news story about their school or community and their report will air on KYW Newsradio. KYW brand manager Kristina Koppesar says, “No other program brings students closer to the heartbeat of news and sports media. After nearly six decades, we aren’t just teaching students, we’re building a legacy that spans generations. With the support of Klein College, we are excited to continue shaping the future of young media professionals, in Philadelphia and beyond.” This year, Trey Williams (pictured above, center), a student from Salesianum High School, was awarded the $2,000 Richard Monetti Scholarship. The yearly scholarship is named in honor of a Newstudies graduate who passed away in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and honors a student whose work demonstrates overall excellence. To keep his memory alive, his family speaks at Newstudies every year.

FCC Chair Carr Underscores Broadcasters’ “Public Interest” Duty

During last week’s testimony before the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, FCC Chair Brendan Carr addressed, among other things, broadcasters’ obligation to serving the public interest. This comes as he is being accused by critics of using the power of the Commission to influence content.  Carr testified, “The FCC isimg working to empower local broadcasters to serve the public interest and meet the needs of their communities. As Congress, the Supreme Court, and the FCC have all made clear, broadcasters are different than every other distributor of media. Specifically, broadcasters are required by both the Communications Act and the terms of their FCC-issued licenses to operate in the public interest. This sets them apart from cable channels, podcasts, streaming services, social media, and countless other types of distributors that have no public interest obligation. The FCC’s broadcast hoax rule, its news distortion policy, its political equal opportunity regulation, its prohibition on obscene, indecent, and profane content, its localism requirements – all of those and more apply uniquely to broadcasters. Congress has instructed the FCC to enforce public interest requirements on broadcasters. The FCC should do exactly that.

“Television broadcasters have this public interest obligation because the government has given them the unique privilege of using a scarce national resource – the public airwaves – and in doing so has necessarily excluded others that might want to broadcast their own programming over that same spectrum. That is why they are required to serve, not just their own narrow interest, but the public interest, including the needs of their local communities.

“To ensure that broadcasters can meet their public interest obligations, the FCC has taken a number of actions, including seeking public comment for the first time in more than 15 years on the relationship between the large, national programmers on the one hand and the many local broadcast television stations on the other. Comments in that proceeding suggest that many local broadcasters are concerned that the national programmers have amassed enormous power and influence in recent years and have made it more challenging for local broadcasters to fulfill their public interest obligations. The FCC is going to continue its efforts to empower local broadcasters to meet their public interest obligations.”

KBOI Breaks Record with Annual Toy Drive. Cumulus Media’s news/talk KBOI, Boise partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Charlie Co., 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and broke records for their annual holiday toy drive benefiting Toys for Tots. The community responded by filling 9.25 trailers with toys for all ages. Cumulus regional VP and market manager Don Morin says, “KBOI has always believed that a great radio station is more than just a voice on the air. It’s a partner in building a stronger community. Idaho’s Largest Toy Drive is a perfect example of that commitment.”

KXEL Announces Tractorcade Route. NRG Media’s Iowa radio stations, including news/talk KXEL-AM, Waterloo, are again supporting the “Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade” taking place June 14-17, 2026. This 27th annual event will bring more than 400 vintage tractor enthusiasts together for four days of traveling rural areas of Iowa. The always-anticipated route was announced in a special broadcast on December 12 helmed by KXEL’s Jeff Stein and broadcast live from the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum in Waterloo. Stein was joined by veteran ag broadcasters Ken Root and Russ Parker, founders of the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network.

Judge Agrees to Cumulus’ Request to Shield Third-Party Witnesses in Nielsen Suit

As Cumulus Media’s suit against Nielsen for monopolistic practices moves through the United States District Court Southern District of New York, Cumulus wins its bid to have third-party declarants’ names and places of employment redacted for fear of retaliation by Nielsen viaimg rate increases. Cumulus argued, “Nielsen, a monopolist engaging in anticompetitive behavior, holds all of the power during contract negotiations, resulting in an unequal bargaining dynamic that is ripe for retaliation. For example, Nielsen can and has raised its rates significantly during negotiations. imgIf identifying information is revealed to Nielsen’s businesspeople, Nielsen can retaliate with additional rate increases, resulting in manifest injustice to these third parties actively involved or who will be involved in negotiations with Nielsen.” After denying Cumulus’ request on December 4, Cumulus filed a supplemental brief and on December 15 Judge Jeannette Vargas agreed with Cumulus, writing, “Cumulus has established that sufficient countervailing factors – in particular, the privacy interests of these non-party declarants, the lack of bearing these narrowly tailored redactions have on the merits of this action, and the non-party declarants’ susceptibility to economic retaliation – outweigh the strong presumption in favor of public access to judicial documents.”

WISN, Milwaukee’s Jay Weber to Transition from Mornings to Podcast Host

WISN, Milwaukee morning drive host Jay Weber will leave his role as morning drive host at the iHeartMedia news/talk station later this month and will begin hosting a twice-weekly podcast beginning in the spring of 2026. Weber has been a talk host with the station for 35 years, the last 18 years in morningimg drive. The station says Weber will remain a contributor to WISN programming and station initiatives. Weber says, “It has been an incredible honor to wake up Wisconsin for the past 35 years, and I’m grateful to every listener who has made this show part of their morning routine. SABO SEZ: A Long History – Do Not Fear AI

imgAndy Economos, the founder of Radio Computing Systems (RCS), was a leader in bringing digital tech into the radio industry. In 1980, he was leaving his position as head of technology for NBC Inc. to start his own company. I was EVP of the NBC FM stations. Andy and I were walking to lunch, crossing Sixth Avenue at 49th street and he asked me, “Is there any software your radio stations could use?”

I said, “Yes, we could use software that programs music.” He was interested. I said, “When you invent that, NBC will buy your first products.”

Andy went forth and invented “Selector,” the first viable, almost easy-to-understand, user-friendly music programming software. Prior to “Selector,” music was programmed in a wide variety of homemade processes such as rotating songs against back timing photo lab clocks (WABC) to RKO’s “Gold Book” mess requiring jocks to use many colored pens to log off played songs. Or the wooden spike technique: Jocks took the 45s off one spike after it was played and stacked it on a different spike – really.

The adoption of “Selector” didn’t go as planned. First, most of the industry was terrified that what little freedom jocks had to select songs would be lost. My favorite cry from jocks, “But when it’s raining, I’ve got to play a song that sings about rain.”

My hope for computerizing the organization of songs was that it would free up programmers to program! The desired end game was that programmers would have more time to talk with their talent, create bigger promotions and upgrade overall production.

What happened, however, was most programmers devoted more time to programming music! Throughout the country programmers pored over the output from “Selector” and manually, hour by hour by hour and edited every song.

When discussing the virtue of precision music selection, WABC midday talent Ron Lundy said, “It don’t mean nothinnnnn.”

AI is just like “Selector.” First, it strikes fear. But it will be used in every radio station very soon. How it will be used and its impact on you will be different than we can imagine. The more a person learns about AI’s capabilities and how to use its fresh options, the more control they will have of it.

Jeff Katz Scores Thousands of Views of Drunk Raccoon Interview

WRVA, Richmond afternoon drive talk host Jeff Katz took advantage of the story of the raccoon that got into an Ashland, Virginia liquor store, broke some liquor bottles, drank some of the booze and passed out. He’s pictured above “interviewing” the raccoon on his show. Katz tells TALKERS the store is just 15 miles north of Richmond and it’s all that anyone is talking about, so he decided to create the photo and share it on social media with links to his show.

Edison Research Releases TikTok Study

For a while it was easy to dismiss TikTok as an app to share silly videos, but the social media platform hasimg grown exponentially in the U.S., so much so that Edison Research just unveiled the results of a new research effort called The Infinite Scroll: A TikTok Report in a recent webinar. Edison says the webinar offered insights into how often U.S. users engage with TikTok, their perceptions of the platform, ad recall on TikTok, if they spend too much time on the platform, and more. An Artist’s Perspective on Rush Limbaugh

imgMy introduction to Rush Limbaugh begins in the fall of 1992. I began listening to Rush’s radio show after seeing him campaigning on stage with George H.W. Bush during the 1992 fall presidential election. Bill Clinton would win the election and so would begin the greatest, media political rivalry ever between Rush Limbaugh and Bill Clinton. Rush’s middle America authentic voice was cutting through the mainstream media noise of the day from a generationally unique perspective. He was the perfect counterculture combatant to Bill Clinton’s political philosophy. Being a baby boomer myself and two years younger than Rush, I was immediately hooked on the EIB radio network!

As a professional illustrator, my career in 1996 was about to cross paths with Rush Limbaugh at my mailbox. A neighbor had just received his monthly Limbaugh Letter, and this would be my first opportunity to actually see and thumb through the newsletter. Noticing the magazine used illustration, I jotted down the address and fired off a promotional package of my art to the art director. Within a week, I received a call from the art director, and I got my very first illustration assignment for the Limbaugh Letter. Throughout 1997, I would receive many more illustration assignments. My very first cover painting for the newsletter, the May issue, “If I Were a Liberal,” would impress and really captivate Rush. So much so that he took to the airwaves not once but twice declaring: “You’re going to want to get this cover blown up and framed, I predict.” And “It’s just fabulous, you’re going to want to subscribe to the newsletter just to see this cover.”

What a thrill for me! Over the course of the next seven years, I would create 70 cover paintings of Rush, often having him doing hilarious things to his Democrat party nemesis. The February 1998 issue would have Rush crashing through a spotted owl’s forest habitat in an SUV. This cover would earn me the title, “Official Limbaugh Letter Cover Illustrator.” Another favorite was the March 1998 issue with Rush, scissors in hand cutting down a spider web holding up a spider with a head that looked eerily like Bill Clinton. This cover prompted Rush to send a complimentary email to the art director saying “A totally awesome cover… one of the best in our history…well done!!!” All in caps I might add! Every month that followed would be one fun assignment after the other. It was beyond cool working on the next Limbaugh Letter cover while listening to Rush on the radio. In 2001, I got to accompany the Limbaugh Letter art director to a Manhattan photo shoot where I finally got to meet the man himself. What a memory! Finally, working for Rush, “America’s Real Anchorman,” was both an honor and a privilege. What a fun ride it was… to have contributed in a very small way, my part… in the “Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy.” Isaac Newton wrote, “If I see farther, it’s because I’m standing on the shoulders of giants.” We stand on your shoulders, Rush, and America thanks you. Mega Dittos Rush Limbaugh, Mega Dittos!

McPherson Exits WFAN, New York Citing Personal Reasons

Sports talk host Keith McPherson has left his full-time role as evening host on Audacy’s WFAN, New York after four years in the role. He posted a video to social media earlier this week explaining that he may still do some fill-in at the station but he’s leaving for personal reasons. Heimg says, “I’d like to break some news before anybody else can break my news. I’m officially done as the nighttime host at WFAN. It has been four calendar years, Friday was my last nighttime show as the full-time nighttime host. Before anybody else can hijack the story and say I was fired or my contract was up, I wasn’t fired, I’m not quitting, my contract is not up, I’m shifting… I’m making a personal change that was necessary for myself and my family. I just took my son to school, just saw my wife leave for work and got a minute to sit here before the day gets rolling… but breaking news this Monday going into Thanksgiving, I am no longer the full-time nighttime host on WFAN.” In November of 2021, McPherson took over the evening show from longtime WFAN personality Steve Somers.

Monday Memo: Gobble Gobble

imgRunning a successful radio station, hosting a show, or producing a podcast is a lot like hosting Thanksgiving dinner. You need a plan. You need to deliver something satisfying to a crowd with varying tastes. And most of all – if you get it right – you’ll have leftovers you can turn into even more value long after the main event.

The Menu is the Strategy. You don’t just “wing it” on Thanksgiving. Same goes for your content. Who are you serving? What do they expect? Your content calendar is your shopping list. Your team is your kitchen crew. And if you’re still deciding what’s on the menu the morning of, don’t expect rave reviews.

Timing is the Secret Sauce. Get the turkey in too late, and the sides suffer. Hit “record” without a clear rundown, and the show flounders. Publish an episode at the wrong time? Lost in the noise. Stations, shows, and podcasts are all about flow and timing. Great pacing, clean execution, smart transitions. Just like the perfect meal, everything needs to hit the table hot and in the right order.

The Turkey is your Centerpiece. For a station, it’s your format or your tentpole talent. For a show, it’s the host or the day’s big segment. For a podcast, it might be your story structure or your featured guest. Nail the turkey, and people forgive a few lumpy mashed potatoes. Miss it – bland, dry, underwhelming – and no one remembers the green bean casserole.

The Sides are the Supporting Elements. News, weather, traffic, and imaging turn a decent meal into a memorable one. Great intros, tight sound design, and a well-timed punchline make your core content shine.

Different Tastes, One Table. Uncle Edgar wants deep-fried turkey. Your cousin’s vegan. Grandma’s still mad you skipped the marshmallows on the yams. Your audience is just as varied – P1 loyalists, casual browsers, podcast subscribers who never miss a week. You can’t be everything to everyone, but you can build a spread that makes multiple types of listeners feel seen. Know your audience segments. Serve accordingly.

Table Setting = Delivery Platform. Whether it’s FM, a podcast app, a smart speaker, or a website, presentation matters. Is the user experience smooth? Is the stream clean? Is the podcast art appealing? Are your links working? A cold plate on fine china is still cold. Don’t let great content get lost in clunky delivery.

Leftovers = Repurposing. You spent all that time prepping and recording. Don’t just serve it once. Chop up segments for social. Turn interviews into blog posts. Republish as “Best Of” content. Archive it smartly so people can find it later.

Leftover content, when handled right, can fuel long term engagement. Don’t throw away anything tasty just because the initial serving is over.

Thanksgiving reminds us that people crave connection, comfort, and a sense of occasion. So does your audience, whether they tune in live, stream on demand, or binge your podcast during a road trip.

So, plan well. Deliver hot. Serve generously. And whatever you do, don’t forget the gravy.

WCCO-AM Raises Funds for Homelessness Charity. 830 WCCO in Minneapolis raised $374,607 during its 23rd “Interrupt Homelessness” radiothon, benefitting Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities. This brings the total amount raised to just shy of $5 million since the radiothon began in 2003.

MLB-ESPN Deal Keeps ESPN Radio National Audio Home for Baseball. ESPN and Major League Baseball agree to a multi-faceted agreement featuring a broad range of national rights, plus local out-of-market rights and in-market rights. As part of the agreement, ESPN Radio continues to serve as national audio home of MLB, including the World Series.

Study: 96% of Americans Want Car Radios

Research firm Critical Mass Insights says its recent study indicates that 96% of Americans say having a built-in AM/FM radio is important when purchasing a new car, and 98% say it’s important that radio remains easy to find on the dashboard. Critical Mass Insights says that its findings “cut across every demographic group surveyed, with consumers ages 18 to 74 overwhelmingly agreeing that access to radio is essential – even among those who don’timg regularly listen to AM or FM.” Company SVP of research Elizabeth Falke states, “The bottom line here is just how much people value having easy access to both AM and FM radio in their cars. Consumers want radio for a variety of different reasons that are largely unique to local radio – everything from discovering what new music matters to weather updates, the latest sports reports and local news and events.” As the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025 makes its way through congress, Falke says its important that manufacturers understand the absence of radio would also influence new car purchasing decisions. The study found that 96% of Americans would miss radio if it were removed and 89% say the lack of a radio would likely keep them from buying that vehicle. She concludes, “This research is crucial for car manufacturers as we see that, immediately, half of consumers wouldn’t even look at buying a car without a radio. The ease and simplicity of radio is embedded in the lives of drivers consuming various forms of audio in their cars.”

Erick Erickson Show Raises Funds for Hungry for a Day

The nationally syndicated “Erick Erickson Show” helped raise more than $265,000 for Hungry for a Day to provide Thanksgiving meals nationwide. The drive focuses on delivering completeimg holiday dinners – including turkey or smoked ham, sweet or mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, rolls, and pie – to families who might otherwise go without. Erickson says, “Every year, my listeners remind me why this show exists – not just to discuss the issues of the day, but to drive real change in people’s lives. This isn’t about politics; it’s about compassion, faith, and stepping up for our neighbors.
