RTDNA’s Dan Shelley to Retire. RTDNA president and CEO Dan Shelley is reriting at the end of 2025 after more than 25 years with the organization. The RTDNA board of directors voted to approve current executive director Tara Puckey as the new president and CEO beginning in January of 2026.

Two Media Companies Announces Q1 Earnings Reports. Townsquare Media will release first quarter 2025 financial results before the market opens on Thursday, May 8. The company will host a conference call to discuss certain first quarter 2025 financial results that day 8:00 am ET and Saga Communications will release its First Quarter 2025 results at 9:00 am ET while holding a conference call at 11:00 am ET that morning.

KFBK, Sacramento Names Sam Shane Early PM Host

iHeartMedia Sacramento announces that effective June 2, air personality Sam Shane will transition from co-hosting “The KFBK Morning News” to host of the 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm show that’s been held by Tom Sullivan for more than 30 years. Sullivan recently announced his semi-retirement. Shane says, “I’mimg humbled and honored to be taking over the time slot occupied by Tom Sullivan at KFBK, a radio station with a rich history of producing superior news/talk programs. Never have I enjoyed producing and delivering a program more than these last six years as I have co-hosted the morning news show on KFBK with Cristina Mendonsa. I’m very proud of our accomplishments and grateful for the opportunity imgto have worked with Cristina and everyone behind the scenes who made it happen. Most recently, Irby served as executive director of news at WYPR, joining the organization’s leadership team in April 2020. Prior to that, she held multiple editorial and leadership roles at NPR, including anchor, editor, and senior supervising producer of newscasts.

Wyatt Fulton, the brand manager for Townsquare Media’s sports talk WTBC-AM/W261BT “Tide 100.9,” wins Best Sports Talk Show in a Medium Market for his “T-Town Sports Daily” program at the Alabama Broadcasters’ Association ABBY Awards. Fulton tells Tuscaloosa Thread, “I am honored to win my first Abby Award in my first year on the air on ‘Tide 100.9!’ I’m extremely grateful and hope to continue building a reputation as an award-winning multimedia sports journalist in Tuscaloosa.”

NYPR Names New Officer. New York Public Radio president and CEO LaFontaine E. Oliver announces that Thomas J. Reno is been named chief operating and financial officer. Reno joins NYPR from Precision Strategies, a DC-based strategic communications agency.

HC at the NAB: More Than Spots, Less Than Clutter

imgRadio sells advertisers our listeners’ attention. For a hundred years, our inventory has largely been commercials. Now, as our wandering audience leads us to more revenue channels, are we hooked on spots?

“We’re still in the same business. What’s changed is the tool box.”

Salem Media Group EVP, operations and revenue development Linnae Young was among panelists exploring “The Local Advertising Buying Landscape: What are Clients Buying, and how are Radio Sellers Succeeding or Missing Out?” Her laser-like focus is on the client’s need: “The HVAC company has two trucks and wants six.”

Ditto from session moderator Mike Hulvey, the Radio Advertising Bureau’s president & CEO. He called pitching a multi-store McDonald’s franchisee, who heard-him-out, then asked “Will that idea sell a hamburger?”

We sure have ideas. Researcher Gordon Borrell reckons that “the biggest mistake radio stations are making is underestimating the potential [of digital].” Many now sell video advertising. Prospects “don’t have any questions about radio, other than ‘Can you lower the price?’ They have lots of questions about digital.” Be their guide.

And obsess on outcomes. “Stop with the tactics,” urges Marketron senior director of digital strategy Dustin Wilson. “It’s all about solutions-based selling.”

“As radio has encountered increased pressure on revenue, it has often increased spot loads.”

Ad nauseam, in the view of Edison Research co-founder & president Larry Rosin, whose Ted Talk-type session “Considering Spot Loads” was plainspoken.

Radio has violated what Larry calls “The Commercial Broadcast Bargain” – the unspoken deal that content is worth the time spent listening to ads. “We’ve tilted the bargain in an unfair way,” he said, pointing to “fewer, but much longer breaks; and many, many [music] stations now loading all their spots into two interminable breaks per hour.”

Rosin’s team has long tracked listening habits through its Infinite Dial series, and the trend is clear: Radio’s “Share of Ear” never fully recovered after the pandemic; and commercial loads went up during that time.

“The real problem” is not understanding how ‘Infinite’ today’s ‘Dial’ is, “ignoring the fact that there are other things to listen to.” Ad loads tend to be shorter in podcasts and in non-paid streams. These ad-supported competitors never run more than two spots back-to-back. And increasingly, Americans are paying for ad-free content, via SiriusXM, Spotify, YouTube Premium, and others.

Solutions? Larry was clear: “What I’m NOT saying: ‘cut the load and charge more’ in today’s low-demand environment.”

— Even if you can’t lower total inventory, consider more shorter breaks. “Listeners have, or at least had, an internal clock: song (3 minutes) – song (3 minutes) – song (3 minutes) – break (3 minutes). When you ask music radio consumers, a break should be the length of a song. The two long breaks clock simply can’t be the best we can do for advertisers.”
— Bonus on Rating, not Share, which would “reorient radio programmers to consider ALL competitors, not just other local stations. Radio’s insular world hurts it.”
— Don’t demonize commercials – “a disservice to advertisers” – the way we seem to when we call the stop set “a break;” or tout commercial-free hours to pump-up a daypart (then overdose the load in adjacent hours).
— Improve the quality of commercials.

KOA, Denver Wins at CBA Awards gala. KOA, Denver talk host Ross Kaminsky tips TALKERS that his station was honored with a win in the “Best News Coverage of a Single Event” category for the program he anchored after President Trump was shot in Butler, PA. from the Colorado Broadcasting Association at its recent awards gala. KOA, led by program director Dave Tepper, was also named “Station of the Year.”

Cumulus and San Francisco Giants Extend. Cumulus Media’s sports talk KNBR, San Francisco signs a multi-year extension with the San Francisco Giants to continue as the team’s flagship radio station. KNBR has been the official radio broadcast home for the Giants since 1979. Broadcasting personalities include: Jon Miller, Dave Flemming, Mike Krukow, and Duane Kuiper.

680 The Fan and Atlanta Braves Renew. Dickey Broadcasting Company announces the extension of its flagship partnership with the Atlanta Braves. Under the terms of the 12-year extension, “680 The Fan” will remain the exclusive radio home of the Atlanta Braves, providing comprehensive coverage of all games, expert analysis, and exclusive content. Company president David Dickey says, “We are incredibly proud to extend our relationship with the Atlanta Braves. Our shared passion for baseball and dedication to delivering top-notch content to our listeners has been the cornerstone of our success. We look forward to many more seasons of exciting Braves baseball on ‘680 The Fan.’”

Philly Non-Comm Produces Business Competition. WURD-FM, Philadelphia is presenting the “Level Up Pitch Competition and Party” on Tuesday (4/8) at Filter Club in Philadelphia as five women entrepreneurs showcase their innovative businesses in front of a live audience and a panel of expert judges. Tiffany Bacon hosts the event in which one winner will get a marketing and community outreach prize package valued at $5,000. It includes a full advertising and marketing package on WURD Radio, business association memberships and access to mentorship and other resources for entrepreneurs.

Louisville Public Media Names New Chief. The Louisville non-commercial outlet announces that Kenya Young is its new president and CEO, effective May 19. LPM board member John Schriber says, “Kenya Young brings positive energy, meaningful experience, and an exciting vision for the future of public media. She has a warmth and accessibility that impresses everyone she meets and demonstrates a unique ability to connect mission, strategy, and community impact – qualities essential to leading LPM successfully.”

Urban One Reports Q4 ’24 Net Revenue Down 2.7%

Urban One, Inc reports its operating results from the fourth quarter of 2024 and reveals net revenue was approximately $117.1 million, a decrease of 2.7% from the same period in 2023. The company reported an operating loss of approximately $1.9 million for the quarter, compared to operating income of approximately $6.8 million for the three months ended December 31, 2023. Broadcast and digitalimg operating income was approximately $38.6 million, an increase of 1.7% from the same period in 2023. Net loss was approximately $35.7 million for the quarter, compared to net loss of $11.0 million for the same period in 2023. Urban One CEO and president Alfred C. Liggins, III states, “Our Adjusted EBITDA of $103.5 million came in at the mid-point of guidance, helped by strong political advertising revenues in the radio division. The radio outperformance was offset by declines in both advertising and affiliate revenues at the cable TV segment, as audience delivery continued to underperform expectations. We are however seeing some stabilization in the first quarter cable TV delivery, which should help to mitigate the continuing decline of linear TV subscribers. First quarter core radio revenue demand weakened, with pacings down 13.6%, although the second quarter is showing signs of improvement, with core pacings currently down 1.7%.”

WWO: Study Says Podcast Reach Matches TV

This week, Cumulus Media | Westwood One’s Audio Active Group blog looks at data from the recently published Edison Research project The Infinite Dial. The focus is on podcasting’s rise in reach and the blog points to several takeaways for marketers: 1) Podcasting is now a mass reach media vehicle.img Podcasting is no longer a niche platform lacking scale. Podcasts deserve a larger role in media plans as opposed to “test and learn” experimental buys. 158 million Americans, 55% of persons 12+, are reached monthly. Among persons 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54, monthly reach is now 65% to 73%; 2) It is feasible to consider shifting TV budgets to podcasting given that podcast 18-34 weekly reach (52%) is as big as TV’s (52%); 3) Brands targeting women should give podcasts a starring role in media plans: Podcast female audiences have hit record highs in habituation and reach; 4) Among male demographics, monthly reach is now in the low 70% range; and 5) Adopt agency media legend Arnie Semsky’s “5% solution” to podcasts: Allocate 5% of digital ad budgets to podcasts. Beasley Reports 2024 Q4 Net Revenue Up 2.3%

Beasley Broadcast Group reports operating results for the fourth quarter of 2024 and for the full year of 2024. For Q4 of 2024, Beasley reports revenue of $67.3 million, an increase of 2.3% over the same period in 2023. The company reports a net loss of $2.06 due to a $98.8 million of non-cash impairment losses. For the full year of 2024 Beasley reports revenue of $240.3 a decline of 2.7% from the full year of 2023.img Beasley CEO Caroline Beasley says, “2024 was a transformative year for Beasley as we took decisive actions to strengthen our balance sheet, streamline our operations, and position the company for long-term success. Democrat Starks to Leave the FCC

Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Geoffrey Starks announces he is resigning from the Commission. He issued the following statement: “Today I sent a letter to the president and leader Schumer indicating that I intend to resign my seat as a commissioner this spring. Serving the American people as aimg commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission has been the honor of my life. With my extraordinary fellow commissioners and the incredible career staff at the agency, we have worked hard to connect all Americans, promote innovation, protect consumers, and ensure national security. I have learned so much from my time in this position, particularly when I have heard directly from Americans on the issues that matter to them. I have been inspired by the passion, engagement and commitment I have seen from colleagues, advocates, and industry. Monday Memo: ChatGPT, Carefully

imgObservation, as a heavy CNBC viewer: Artificial Intelligence is to 2025 what Dot Com was to the late 1990s, game-changer… and shiny object.

Everyone seemed to be chanting “AI” at this year’s CES. In a previous column here, I offered, from experience, some Do’s-and-Don’ts for crafting commercial copy. And as vendors are applying AI to various other broadcast content and operational functions, I asked the app itself: “How would you caution radio broadcasters against over-reliance on ChatGPT?” SECONDS later, the robot replied:

“Here are some key points to consider:

1. Maintain Authenticity: Radio broadcasting thrives on the personality and authenticity of its hosts. Relying too heavily on AI-generated scripts or content can make broadcasts feel robotic, inauthentic, or detached. Listeners tune in to hear the voice, opinions, and personality of the broadcaster, not just information being read off a script. ChatGPT is great for generating ideas, but it shouldn’t replace the genuine voice of the host.

2. Human Connection: One of the strengths of radio is the personal connection that hosts build with their audience. This connection comes from spontaneous moments, personal anecdotes, and relatable conversations. AI can’t replicate the unique, emotional bond that a human broadcaster forms with listeners. Overusing AI could distance the host from the audience and make the show feel more like a recorded message than a live, engaging experience.

3. Accuracy and Fact-Checking: While ChatGPT can generate a lot of information quickly, it’s not always accurate or up-to-date. Broadcasters need to be mindful that AI-generated content might contain errors, outdated facts, or biased perspectives. Relying on AI without fact-checking could lead to broadcasting misinformation, which can seriously damage the station’s credibility.

4. Tone and Nuance: AI like ChatGPT can struggle with tone, emotion, and subtlety in language. Radio broadcasters need to ensure that the tone of the broadcast fits the subject matter and the audience. AI might miss the mark on this, especially in more nuanced or sensitive topics. A human touch is often needed to tailor the message effectively.

5. Audience Engagement: ChatGPT can provide content, but it can’t engage with listeners the way a broadcaster can. Over-relying on AI could take away opportunities for live interaction, audience call-ins, and real-time feedback. Broadcasting is about creating a dialogue, not just delivering information, and AI isn’t capable of fostering real-time, dynamic conversations.

6. Creativity and Innovation: While AI can assist with generating ideas, true creativity comes from the human mind. Broadcasters should focus on bringing fresh, original ideas to the table—things AI can’t easily replicate. Over-relying on ChatGPT might limit creativity, turning broadcasts into predictable, generic experiences.

In summary, while AI tools like ChatGPT can be incredibly useful for research, inspiration, and content generation, broadcasters should ensure they don’t lose the human element of their shows. Maintaining authenticity, personal engagement, and creativity are key to keeping radio content fresh and compelling. AI should be a tool, not a substitute for the broadcaster’s unique voice and connection with the audience.”

“New Jersey 101.5” Presents Town Hall on Terror Threats

Tomorrow evening (2/27), Townsquare Media’s WKXW-FM, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5” presents a special Town Hall broadcast titled, “Today’s Terrorism Threats.” The Town Hall-style discussion explores the domestic and foreign terrorist threats facing New Jersey. Station political director Eric Scott leads theimg discussion that will include experts educating New Jersey residents about how to identify threats and what to do when one’s personal safety is in jeopardy. The program will also expose the growing threat posed to children who are increasingly being groomed and recruited by extremists online. He says, “Law enforcement is increasingly concerned about both foreign and domestic threats. But the rate at which extremists are targeting our children is particularly alarming.” On-air guests will include: Carl Priddy, acting assistant special agent in charge of counterterrorism for the Newark FBI office; Laurie R. Red Apple Launches “The StoneZONE”

Red Apple Audio Networks and 77WABC Radio are debuting a new evening show starring political strategist Roger Stone titled, The StoneZONE that will air live from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm ET. Red Apple chief Johnimg Catsimatidis says, “With the addition of The StoneZONE, radio audiences will have Roger’s perspective on news of the day in real-time. Our world is moving quicker than ever before, and listeners want to hear Roger’s insider’s understanding of what’s really going on in politics.” Following each evening’s broadcast, a video version of that StoneZONE will soon be exclusively available on Stone’s StoneZONE Rumble channel. This new show is in addition to the syndicated Sunday “Roger Stone Show” that also airs on WABC.

imgJim Gearhart is a remarkable on-air talent who was the AM drive host on New Jerey 101.5 for 20-plus years. In the 1960’s he was a star on WCBS-AM and WNEW. The illustration is an ad for his 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm show on WNBC circa 1968.

At first glance the ad presents a normal appeal to listen to Jim. Take another look. The message is: “Listen to Jim, he’s back,

“AND, you can talk to the biggest stars.”

One-on-one conversation between a listener and a newsmaker was BRAND NEW. All of the WNBC ads at the time stress that listeners could talk directly with celebrities. Listeners had to be “taught” that radio took phone calls!

There are two different types of talk radio cities: legacy cities and expansion cities.

Until the mid-1980s there were approximately 48 full-time talk stations. Their host cities had embraced talk radio since the dawn of radio. Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, Miami. When satellites made it possible for more cities to have a talk station, expansion talk outlets had a serious challenge. A challenge I witnessed at WHBQ, Memphis.

WHBQ was the first telephone talk station in the hometown of Elvis. It was not doing well despite strong talent, signal and RKO money. Very few calls. Focus group participants revealed the answer: “Oh, I can call in? I thought those were actors.” The people of Memphis had never heard a telephone talk station and therefore didn’t know how it “worked.”

WNBC had the same challenge. It was the first TELEPHONE talk station in New York. Dominant WOR was #1 for decades but never took a listener phone call. The ad for Jim sold the innovation that listeners could talk to the radio.

To evolve the format, collectively we desperately need new programming features. Features as compelling as the power of one listener talking one-on-one to a newsmaker.

The radio industry has reached a significant milestone in its digital transformation, hitting $2.1 billion in digital revenue in 2024, according to the latest annual digital benchmarking report from RAB and Borrell Associates Inc. The 13th annual report highlights the increasing role of digital advertising in stabilizing the industry’s financial outlook, with digital revenue now accounting for nearly 25% of the average radio station’s total income…..SPEAKING OF YOUTUBE.Shelly Palmer reports: Shortly after it launched, YouTube changed the way we consumed video. It grew powerful in tandem with the evolution of smartphones as it redefined our video viewing experiences. Now, YouTube has transcended its original form factors to officially become a television-first platform. CEO Neal Mohan revealed that viewers now watch more than one billion hours of content on their TVs every day, surpassing mobile viewing. For the past two years, YouTube has been the most-watched streaming service in the U.S., according to Nielsen. The shift toward TV screens is no accident. FOX News Channel’s Sean Hannity is scheduled to present the first television interview with the newly sworn in Attorney General Pam Bondi this evening (2/6) “Hannity(9:00 pm – 10:00 pm ET). Bondi will discuss her first actions as Attorney General and other news of the day. WWO: Data Reveals the Cost of Dull Ads

This week’s Cumulus Media | Westwood One AudioActive Group blog looks at the creative side of audio ads. The Institute for Practitioners in Advertising produced data that reveals brands must spend significantly more media money on dull ads compared to interesting, non-dull ads. Looking at key findings from “Another Dullimg Whitepaper: The Extraordinary Cost of Dull,” the analysis notes that 1) Neutrality, the absence of emotion, is the most common reaction to ads; 2) Business-to-business ads are even duller with greater neutral “feeling nothing” responses; and 3) Marketers have two jobs: Converting existing demand and creating future demand. Only about 5% of customers are in-market and “rational and dull copy using tightly target media” has its purpose here. But for the 95% of the customers not in-market and thinking about the category, “The objective is to create ads that produce positive feelings, especially happiness. If an ad makes people feel good, it’s more memorable and more effective at building positive associations with a brand.” See the complete blog post here.

imgDon McLean recalls the newspaper headline on February 3, 1959: “Three Rock’n’roll Stars Killed in Plane Crash.” He says, “I cried,” telling AARP Magazine that, years later, “I had my tape machine on, and this song just came out of me: ‘A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile…’”

Consider bumping with Buddy Holly/Richie Valens/Big Bopper hooks and noting the occasion. If you can get away with playing it, Google “American Pie,” and script a short story cool enough to keep someone in a parked car: “They were en route to a ‘Winter Dance Party Tour’ concert in Fargo, North Dakota, but they never made it.” Many who have loved the song for years might figure its lyrics are just randomly nostalgic and not know.

Listeners HEAR stuff like that; and you sound less robotic than so much of what radio has become. You seem to actually know what day it is, especially if they heard you play “I Got You Babe” the day before (It’s Grounnndhog Dayyy!”). Or if you bump or play “Vehicle” by The Ides of March…on The Ides of March,” the 15th.

On Mother’s Day (May 11 this year) the Intruders’ “I’ll Always Love My Mama” is sweet. On Father’s Day (June 15), The Winstons’ “Color Him Father.” And scoff now and believe me later: Dads will be moved-to-tears by “The Men in My Little Girl’s Life” by Mike Douglas.

Legendary Baseball Player/PBP Announcer Bob Uecker Passes at 90

Bob UeckerThe Milwaukee Brewers have announced that Bob Uecker, the legendary radio voice who had called their games since 1971, died this morning (1/16) at the age of 90. He was fondly known throughout the sport as “Mr. Baseball.”  Uecker was widely admired for his sense of humor and gained national acclaim for his role as announcer Harry Doyle in the “Major League” movies. A Milwaukee native, Uecker was an MLB catcher for six seasons, playing his first two years with his then-hometown Milwaukee Braves and winning a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964.  Uecker was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, which honors a broadcaster every year.
