Former WABC, New York Host Wins City Council Primary

Frank Morano, who until recently was the host of “The Other Side of Midnight” on WABC, New York, won the Republican primary for the 51st district city council seat with 82% of the vote and will face Democrat Clifford Hagen in the November election. Morano won the seat that represents Staten Island in a specialimg election earlier this year. Morano says in a statement, “As someone who spent years behind the mic listening to New Yorkers and elevating their voices, I’ve never lost sight of who I work for. That’s why I ran a campaign rooted in community, not consultants. While others poured money into cookie-cutter strategies, I made it a point to invest in local radio, where real Staten Islanders are tuning in. I stayed a regular voice on Sid Rosenberg’s show on WABC and Arthur Aidala’s show on AM 970 — two stations I used to work at and still believe in. My predecessor, Joe Borelli, took his talents to the airwaves as a frequent host and TV panelist. I’ve taken a different path — bringing that same microphone-to-community connection straight to City Hall.”

iHeartMedia’s AI Efforts to Translate Podcasts

Yesterday’s news that iHeartMedia is offering 10 of its top podcasts in six different languages besides their native English did not go into detail about how these podcasts are being translates. A story in Digiday looksimg at how iHeartMedia handled the process of using AI to translate and voice-clone the original podcast hosts. iHeartPodcasts president Will Pearson is quoted saying the AI translations faced two main challenges: ensuring accuracy and preserving each show’s unique tone. iHeartMedia worked with the company Speechlab to clone the voices of the hosts use them to read the show’s transcript in multiple languages. Pearson also says about a quarter of his company’s downloads come from outside the U.S. Read the Digiday story here.

Urban One Shareholders Vote to Allow Reverse Stock Split

At its recent annual shareholder meeting, Urban One shareholders approved an amendment to the company’s Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation to permit it to effect a reverse stock split of itsimg outstanding Class A and Class D Common Stock, at a ratio within a range between one-for-two and one-for-30, subject to and as determined by a committee appointed by the Board of Directors. This comes as the company faces an August 11 deadline for its Nasdaq-traded stock to close at a price above $1 for 10 consecutive sessions, or risk delisting. If that fails, the company could apply for a 180-day grace period but it’s more likely the board goes ahead with the stock split.

SABO SEZ: Do You Really Think the Back of Your Head is Worth Watching?

imgThe drive to stream video of radio shows has always been risky. Remember your shock when you first saw one of your radio heroes? Video streaming can present a constant disconnect between the show in the listener’s head and the show on the stream. Many stations make the disconnect worse by streaming terrible video images. Combine the trauma of how a host really looks with a dreary TV show and the package cannot benefit the relationship between station and listener/viewer.

Too many stations stream from one or two fixed cameras in the studio. That picture looks like a police interrogation room. Some stations embarrassingly use one camera on a two person show. The result is a shot of the face of one host and the back of the head of the other, for the entire show. OMG.

Done right, video should enhance the listening experience, it should make the hosts more attractive, more engaging, and more entertaining.

Mistake: Many radio hosts ignore the cameras during spot breaks. These hosts go silent during spots, giving a viewer absolutely no reason to stream. Obviously, if one sits in silence during the break the image presented is pure boredom. On the radio, the listener hears commercials. On their stream they see a silent radio host doing nothing. Double disappointment.

Producing video that enhances a radio show experience takes planning and commitment. One technically simple way to make video work for a host is to address the audience directly during commercial breaks. One on one. The moment a break starts, smart hosts and anchors address the camera and candidly speak with the viewer. Their conversation is topical, urgent and fun.

Engaging the viewer during radio commercial breaks provides added value to a stream and a reason to watch.

B-93, Grand Rapids morning host Aly Mac never stops talking with streaming viewers. She does itimg right, two shows… one on the radio, one on the stream. Seamless and fun.
WPHT produces a TV show with switching, graphics that flows with the radio show.
Baylee Martin is a TV anchor who could teach the industry how to conduct an on-air show enhanced by the stream.  Hearst should sell schedules in her stream content. Have a look, she’s a streaming savant.

When streaming, consider if the video stream is helping or hurting the radio show. If the “reveal” is the back of a head, hurting!

Podcast Download – Spring 2025 Report Released

Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights are releasing the Podcast Download – Spring 2025 Report, what they call “a comprehensive evaluation of the latest podcast audience trends” that examines the habits of weekly podcast consumers. Cumulus says, “A key finding uncovered in the Podcast Download Report is that audio remains the primary mode of podcast consumption despite growing video options and the rise of YouTube as a podcast platform.” Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group senior insightsimg manager Liz Mayer says, “There is no denying that YouTube is playing an important role in the podcast ecosystem, especially when it comes to discovering new podcasts. However, over half of weekly podcast consumers indicate they consume via audio primarily. So, while the new video capabilities are exciting and need to be focused on, the industry can’t forget that it’s what consumers are hearing that is most important.” Highlights from the report include: 1) Audio remains the primary mode of podcast consumption (58%) despite growing video options; 2) YouTube is the leading podcast platform, yet it is not a walled garden as consumers listen to podcasts across multiple platforms; 3) Podcast discovery: YouTube is the place to be found; 44% of new podcast audiences started listening on YouTube; 4) Downloads and listens underestimate the actual audience: The current download impression model fails to account for co-listening; and 5) Why podcast advertising works so well: Podcasts hosts are three times more influential than social media influencers. SABO SEZ: Managing the Meters is a Fatal Time Waster

imgAt first, I thought it was a joke. When I realized there were serious people having serious meetings about the joke, it became both horrific and symptomatic

The sitcom is called: MANAGING THE METERS. Note: As a suited consultant I was a prime mover to get Arbitron off diaries and onto meters.

Worldly success is often the result of being highly focused on what one can control versus imagining what can be controlled. Nielsen can manage their meters. You can’t.

Imagining what can be controlled has led to wasting time playing MANAGING THE METERS.  To participate one must learn where Nielsen meters are placed, which station has which meters, and who is carrying “your” meters. Yes, one can learn, for example, that a 19-year-old in Glendale listens to KIIS-FM for 17 hours a week. More than 17 hours in radio conference rooms will be spent playing whack-a-mole with that 19-year-old’s meter; where will it land next?

Playing MANAGING THE METERS is a major time waster and cume killer. Once upon a time many music stations embraced “request line call-in research.” Shudder. Stations would tally which songs were getting how-many requests and make on-air playlists based on those counts. Obviously call-in request playlists would appeal primarily to existing listeners and do nothing to reach new listeners. Sure, P1s are appeased but cume always dies.

And here we are: Super-serving meter holders who already listen to a station will appease P1s but cume will diminish every month. It is pure myth that “talk” is high TSL and low cume.  In fact, most current talking stations do everything possible to lower cume. Casual cuming is virtually impossible. (Who is talking? What’s the number? Thanks for holding on! Who has time to hold on?). The MANAGING THE METERS fantasy gives “science” to cume-killing actions and reactions.

MANAGING THE METERS, rather than making better, bigger shows has resulted in fear, indecision, and the crime of overthinking. Nothing could be worse for a medium that thrives on emotional wallops than turning feelings into math.

What to do when tempted to play MANAGING THE METERS:

Go for a pleasant walk and imagine a better show, new promotions, fresh promos and surprising, possibly weird topics.
Eat your favorite ice cream and imagine a better show, new promotions, fresh promos and surprising, possibly weird topics.
Call your father and thank him and imagine a better show, new promotions, fresh promos and surprising, possibly weird topics.
Remember that innovative programmers who CREATE – rather than copy – great stations give all of their attention to P2s and then imagine a better show, new promotions, fresh promos and surprising, possibly weird topics.

Bill Spadea Loses Gubernatorial Bid

In January, talk radio host Bill Spadea took leave of his WKXW-FM, Trenton “New Jersey 101.5” morning drive program to run for governor of New Jersey as a Republican. His opponent, Jack Ciattrelli, won theimg primary to take on Democrat Mikie Sherrill in November. New Jersey 101.5’s coverage noted, “Conservative radio host Bill Spadea was expected to give Ciattarelli a fight, but any hope that Spadea might have had to keep the race close ended when President Donald Trump endorsed Ciattarelli. Ciattarelli defeated Spadea on election night with a landslide victory margin of over 40 points. Ciattarelli swept every county, including Ocean County, where Spadea’s base of support was believed to be strongest.” So far, neither the station nor Spadea have stated whether Spadea intends to return to the morning radio program.

KXEL, Cedar Rapids Takes Over “Tractorcade”

NRG Media’s news/talk KXEL, Cedar Rapids took over the sponsorship of the “Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade” after another station in the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo markets discontinued its support. Thisimg was the 26th year for the iconic Iowa summertime event that brings some 325 vintage tractors together at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion fairgrounds in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. NRG Media says that while some entities might have been deterred from taking over such a popular and well-established event, company COO/CFO Jim Smith embraced the opportunity. He says, “We’re learning as we go, but we’re learning from people who have done this for a long time – very seasoned – so… it hasn’t been that heavy of a lift because we’re surrounded by good people.”

WURD, Philadelphia Lays Off Four

According to a report by Axios Philadelphia, urban talk outlet WURD-AM/W241CH, Philadelphia is cutting four staffers from the payroll in a move “meant to ensure the station’s long-term survival.” Affected by the cuts are “Reality Check” host Tonya Pendleton, her lead producer Troy Wilmore, content writer Kiaraimg Santos, and one other employee. According to a memo to staff from WURD CEO and president Sara Lomax wrote praising those affected for their “meaningful contributions to our station, our community, and our city. This decision was not made lightly. As an independent media radio station, it is imperative that we maintain our ability to give Black Philadelphia a voice and a place to make their voices heard.” She also wrote, “I’m very confident we will survive and thrive. “It’s time like this that outlets like WURD are needed more than ever. We want to be around for another 22 years and another 22 after that.”

WHO-AM, Des Moines Unveils Saturday Agriculture Show

iHeartMedia’s news/talk WHO-AM, Des Moines “NewsRadio 1040 WHO” is launching a new agriculture program titled, “We Speak Farm Saturday,” airing from 5:00 am to 7:00 am. The station says that longtime WHO-AM farm director Bob Quinn, along with co-farm director Duane Murley, producer of ‘The Big Show’img Nathan Fischer, and fellow farm department contributors are teaming up to produce the debut show this Saturday (6/7). WHO adds, “‘We Speak Farm Saturday’ builds upon all that’s delivered throughout the week during ‘The Big Show’ with a Market Recap, a weekly ‘Agriculture USA’ segment from the USDA, insightful conversations on Iowa farming, agronomy and food, and will also cover topics such as gardening, farmers markets, rodeos and county fairs.” WHO program director Cole Blair comments, “We are always looking to deliver more for the hard-working farmers and all those involved in Iowa’s agriculture industry at WHO, so we’re proud to expand our Ag programming with the launch of ‘We Speak Farm Saturday.’ When farmers and Ag industry workers get in the truck, tractor or workplace on Saturday it’s only right we’re there with them, too.”

WWO: Agencies & Advertisers Underestimate AM/FM

This week’s blog post from Cumulus Media | Westwood One’s Audio Active Group looks at data from Edison Research’s Share of Ear study and research from Advertiser Perceptions and finds that agencies and advertisers underestimate AM/FM’s share of audience. The blog post notes that an Advertiser Perceptionsimg study of 303 media agencies and marketers conducted in August 2024 found the perceived combined audience share of Pandora/Spotify is 43%, much greater than the perceived share of AM/FM radio (27%). In reality, “According to the Q1 2025 Share of Ear, AM/FM radio’s persons 18+ share of ad-supported audio (68%) is 14 times larger than ad-supported Pandora (5%) and ad-supported Spotify (5%).” The data also reveals that podcasts take the second-place spot with a 20% share. Ad-supported Pandora (5%), ad-supported Spotify (5%), and ad-supported SiriusXM (3%) lag distantly. See the full blog post here.

Lionel to Host WABC’s “The Other Side of Midnight”

Red Apple Media Group announces that Lionel is assuming hosting duties for the station’s overnight program, “The Other Side of Midnight,” formerly hosted by newly elected New York City Councilor Frankimg Morano. Former Chicago Radio Towers Fall

ABC7 Chicago has video of the former towers for WCFL, WLUP-AM and ESPN 1000 in the 100 block of 39th Street in the suburb of Downers Grove being demolished. The station’s coverage notes “they were not the original towers. The towers went up in 2003 to replace the original towers that were erected in 1932.” See the video here.

WWO: Reach Helps Build “Mental Availability”

This week’s blog post from Cumulus Media | Westwood One’s Audio Active Group looks at the effects of reach on and advertiser’s “mental availability.” The piece quotes authors Les Binet and Sarah Carter from their book, 66 Ways To Screw It Up: How Not to Plan, “The single most important factorimg driving brand preference is ‘mental availability’: how well known a brand is, and how easily it comes to mind. Brands with low mental availability tend to struggle, rejected in favor of more familiar rivals. Or not considered in the first place. Brands with high mental availability don’t have to push so hard to sell, so tend to have higher market shares and better margins.” The authors also advise, “Always aim to get more customers from all segments of the market. It’s the main way brands grow.” The blog post concludes that AM/FM radio makes your media plan better by increasing reach. One example is illustrated as follows: Edison’s “Share of Ear” study of ad-supported audio reveals the combined persons 18+ daily reach of Pandora and Spotify is only 12% of Americans. Industry Mainstay Dom Giordano Launching Weekly Podcast Addressing Education and Parental Rights

Longtime Philadelphia-based radio talk show host Dom Giordano is launching a new weekly podcast today (5/27) devoted to exploring America’s politically charged education system with a focus on protecting the rights of parents to engage in school choice and select the best school for their child. The show will feature a blend of commentary from Giordano on the hottest aspects of the evolving issues plus interviews with leaders from the American education system.

A presentation of Giordano Productions, LLC, the program is titled, “Old School, New School, Nextimg School with Dom Giordano” – a phrase inspired by the recent TALKERS conference “Generations 2025” held earlier this year in conjunction with IBS NY 2025. The podcast will be carried on the industry’s major platforms.

Long referred to as the Dean of Philadelphia News/Talk Radio, Giordano, the seasoned midday (12:00 noon – 3:00 pm) host of Audacy’s WPHT, has been a mainstay of local Philadelphia talk radio since 1987 where he has developed a national reputation in the industry for his knowledge and even-handedness. Next week’s second installment will feature an interview with Stacy Garrity, Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The discussion will address the cost savings of school choice and how the issue will play out in the upcoming governor’s race against one of the Democrats’ leading presidential candidates, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

Jeff Katz Takes Part in Virginia’s “Say Their Names” Ceremony

imgDozens of brand-new audio hardware and software companies have been launched during the past 20 years. These start-ups are usually funded by venture capital money. VC money is not invested to return a profit, it’s poured in to – pour it in. Their money is “different” than the cashflow that fuels your business. Start-up money buys time to profit.

Amazon lost money its first 10 years. Spotify launched in 2008 and turned a full year profit for the first time – last year.

MOST venture-backed start-ups do not make it to profit, they close.

With virtually unlimited funds and no deadlines, what are the strategic markers for success of most fresh, new audio businesses? Having performed due diligence for many start-ups, this is an informed summary of their goals:

— Significant distribution of the product.
— Robust, broad-appeal content offerings
— Proven metrics for securing advertising dollars
— Positive cultural impact
— Embraced by late-stage adopters
— Advertiser credibility

Hold radio to the above checklist.  92% of the population has a radio – more households than own a TV. Radio’s distribution is elegant, wireless, and free. Streaming? Yes, radio has streamed to the car since 1938. How’s UCONNECT or APPLE PLAY working in your KIA? Buffering now? Bluetooth pairing? At-home streams cost about $1,000 for a computer, $100 a month for WiFi, $150 for software upgrades and repairs. Radio distribution: turn it “ON.” No startup audio service will match radio’s distribution system.

Mature means predictable. Content offerings on radio are understood, accepted, and quickly adjusted if not appealing. Audio start-ups are rarely run by execs with audio entertainment experience. Their execs tend to be recruited from two groups: techs and discoverers. Techs because somebody has to make it work. Discoverers because you would be shocked at how many audio newcomers were funded on the wacky premise that AM/FM fails to see how badly Americans want to hear brand new music! Lurking among workers within the streaming and satellite communities is the harsh prejudice that pros with actual radio experience are satanic dinosaurs.

Most start-ups flirt with doing good for the country, ie; positive messaging, lots of jazz or world music. AM/FM has hardcore positive impact witnessed by the fact that most public radio stations enjoy ratings dominance. No other medium – none – raises more money for community charities than AM/FM.

Driving a new product past the innovators, early adopters, early majority to late majority is the path to success in any industry. AM/FM reached late majority when Bing Crosby had his own show. How’s mom doing with Spotify?

Advertiser credibility: Procter & Gamble returned to radio in the early 2000s. Last year P&G landed near the top of radio advertisers. Procter has no sense of humor or time for nonsense. If P&G buys a lot of radio, end of story. Again.

Not legacy media. Proven media.

Terry Fahy Retires from Salem

Salem Media Group announces that company executive Terry Fahy retires from the company he’s served for the past 43 years. Fahy began his career with Salem in 1982 as general manager of KDAR-FM and quickly rose through the ranks to hold key leadership roles, including as general salesimg manager at KKLA-FM, market manager for Los Angeles, and regional vice president overseeing major markets such as Seattle, Sacramento, San Francisco, Oxnard, San Diego, and most recently, Honolulu. When the Algorithm Misses the Mark: What the Walters v. OpenAI Case Means for Talk Hosts

imgIn a ruling that should catch the attention of every talk host and media creator dabbling in AI, a Georgia court has dismissed “Armed American Radio” syndicated host Mark Walters’ defamation lawsuit against OpenAI. The case revolved around a disturbing but increasingly common glitch: a chatbot “hallucinating” canonically false but believable information.

The Happenings: A journalist asked ChatGPT to summarize a real court case. Instead, the AI invented a fictional lawsuit accusing Walters of embezzling from the Second Amendment Foundation — a group with which he’s never been employed. The journalist spotted the error and never published inaccurate information. But the damage, at least emotionally and reputationally, was done. That untruth was out there, and Walters sued for defamation.

Last week, the court kicked the case. The court determined Walters was a public figure, and as such, Walters had to prove “actual malice” — that OpenAI knowingly or recklessly published falsehoods. He couldn’t but now it may be impossible.

The judge emphasized the basis that there was an assumption false information was never shared publicly. It stayed within a private conversation between the journalist and ChatGPT. No dissemination, no defamation.

But while OpenAI may have escaped liability, the ruling raises serious questions for the rest in the content creation space.

What This Means for Talk Hosts

Let’s be honest: AI tools like ChatGPT are already part of the media ecosystem. Hosts use them to summarize articles, brainstorm show topics, generate ad copy, and even suggest guest questions. They’re efficient — and also dangerous.

This case shows just how easily AI can generate falsehoods with confidence and detail. If a host were to read something like that hallucinated lawsuit on air, without verifying it, the legal risk would shift. It wouldn’t be the AI company on the hook — it would be the broadcaster who repeated it.

Key Lessons

  1. AI is not a source.
    It’s a starting point. Just like a tip from a caller or a line on social media, AI-generated content must be verified before use.
  2. Public figures are more exposed.
    The legal system gives less protection to people in the public eye — like talk hosts — and requires a higher burden of proof in defamation claims. That cuts both ways.
  3. Disclosure helps.
    OpenAI’s disclaimers about potential inaccuracies helped them in court. On air, disclosing when you use AI can offer similar protection — and builds trust with your audience.
  4. Editorial judgment still rules.
    No matter how fast or slick AI gets, it doesn’t replace a producer’s instincts or a host’s responsibility.

Bottom line: the lawsuit may be over, but the conversation is just beginning. The more we rely on machines to shape our words, the more we need to sharpen our filters. Because when AI gets it wrong, the real fallout hits the human behind the mic.

And for talk hosts, that means the stakes are personal. Your credibility, your syndication, your audience trust — none of it can be outsourced to an algorithm. AI might be a tool in the kit, but editorial judgment is still the sharpest weapon in your arsenal. Use it. Or risk learning the hard way what Mark Walters just did. Walters has yet to comment on what steps – if any – he and his lawyers will take next.

Monday Memo: Your Passion, Your Media Station

imgTALKERS publisher Michael Harrison introduced the term in the 1990s, inviting us to think-beyond the real-time audio we were sending up those towers. What he described seemed conceptual, even futuristic, back then, when we were still logging-onto AOL via dial-up (screech).

The “Media Station” he reckoned we would be producing by now seemed more like a place than a show. It wouldn’t be bound by regulation or sponsor sensitivities or an on-air format. Content needn’t be 30- or 60-seconds or minutes. It won’t even have to be audio. Or governed by how long you can last between bathroom breaks or eating or sleeping, because it won’t be the real-time content that radio was confined to then.

Back to the future. Among headlines from 2025 Edison Research “Infinite Dial” research:

Conservative Groups Petition FCC for Regulatory Relief

More than 20 conservative groups, led by Heritage Action for America, sent a letter Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr voicing their support for the agency’s efforts to modernize what they call outdated ownership regulations that they say negatively impact local TV and radio stations. The letter puts forth the argument that digital media is at an advantage over analogue media due to these regulations. “The FCC’s television and radio ownership rules date back to theimg 1940s, when broadcast dominated mass communications in the U.S. Since then, the media marketplace has changed drastically – from widespread deployment of cable and satellite television networks to the rise of social media, podcasts, and streaming. Local broadcasters compete directly with Big Tech, streaming services, and social media platforms in the marketplace of consumer content. Yet, unlike their competitors such as YouTube and Facebook, broadcasters are limited by the ownership rules in how many households and consumers they can reach. This is an inherent disadvantage.” The letter adds, “By eliminating the national television cap, local TV duopoly restrictions, and local radio ownership caps, broadcasters can better achieve the scale and efficiencies necessary to compete – and to attract vital investment – in a fragmented and rapidly evolving information market.” See the complete letter here as posted by NAB.

FCC’s Gomez: Trump Administration in “Coordinated Efforts to Censor and Control”

In a speech at the 2025 Media Institute Communications Forum on May 15, FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez criticized what she called the Trump administration’s “campaign to censor and control” stating “[S]ince day one the FCC has been implementing the will of this Administration and undermining the First Amendment at every turn.” Gomez said the administration has “initiated investigations andimg floated debilitating rate regulation schemes that target national network broadcasters for their newsrooms’ editorial decisions, harassed private companies for their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, and threatened tech companies that respond to consumer demands for content moderation and fact-checking.  Separately, they have attempted to shutter Voice of America and sought retribution against lawful residents that protest Administration policies.” She cited two occasions where presidents – FDR in 1939, and John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s – asked their FCC Chairs to shut down media outlets critical of their policies and those FCC Chairmen boldly refused.  She added, “This is what courage looks like—FCC Chairs refusing to wield the agency’s licensing authority as a weapon in contravention of the First Amendment and the Communications Act, even in the face of political pressure.”

Podcast Presents 18-Part Series “The Journey Beyond Death”

“The Outer Limits of Inner Truth,” hosted by Ryan McCormick, announces the release of an 18-part series “that offers one of the most in-depth, compassionate, and thought-provoking explorations of death and the afterlife ever produced in modern media,” titled, “The Journey Beyond Death.” McCormick says the podcast series spans 65img original interviews, including 28 with individuals who have had near-death experiences (NDEs). KIVA, Albuquerque’s Eddy Aragon to Run for Congress

Radio station owner and talk host Eddy Aragon says he’s planning to run for congress as a Republican in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District in 2026. Aragon is the operator of Rock of Talkimg LLC, owner of news/talk KIVA, Albuquerque and hosts the afternoon drive “Rock of Talk” show. The seat is currently held by Democrat Gabe Vasquez. The Albuquerque Journal reports that Aragon ran for congress in the state’s 1st Congressional District in 2021 and previously ran for mayor of Albuquerque. He tells the paper, “I can win this race… We need more privatization of education. I think the approach that’s being taken at the national level is important. We don’t want to do without the money, but we definitely want to do without the bureaucracy.” See the Albuquerque Journal story here.
