Perhaps she’s most well-known for her television talk program but
Sally Jessy Raphael got her start in the broadcasting business in radio
and her contribution to the medium was enormous.
She was one of the key pioneers of the contemporary female advice host
genre. Her style consisted of being a good listener and thoughtful dispenser
of wisdom and it worked well enough for her that, after years of bouncing
around from station to station, she was offered a nationally syndicated
program on NBC’s Talknet. She did that program from 1981 to 1987
and it was during that time that she further developed the skills that
would lead to her television program. Her first TV show aired in 1983
in St. Louis and soon went into national syndication.
She won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Host in 1989 and was named Talk Show
Host of the Year by the National Association of Radio Talk Show Hosts
in 1992.
