Sometimes picked on by critics as being too soft during interviews and
showing her own biases, Katie Couric has nonetheless achieved enduring
success as co-anchor of the popular “Today” show on NBC since
1991 and is a superstar in the competitive morning TV wars.
In 1979, she worked as a desk assistant for ABC News. A year later she
went to CNN as an assignment editor. In 1984, she moved into local TV
as a reporter at WTVJ in Miami and then to WRC-TV in Washington, DC. She
joined NBC in 1989 as deputy Pentagon correspondent. She became national
correspondent for the “Today” show in 1990 and a year later
was the new co-host.
Having endured a number of personal tragedies, Katie Couric maintains
a friendly approach to her interviews and radiates a bright “America’s
sweetheart” image. She also is a well-researched, intelligent host.
This combination creates a connection with the public that obviously works
very well in national morning television.
