She wasn’t the first psychologist to take to the airwaves but she’s
by far the one who took the concept and molded it into a format that works
on contemporary talk radio.
Dr. Joy Browne worked at talk stations in Boston and San Francisco before
becoming nationally syndicated in the early 1990s by ABC Talknet.
Psychologists weren’t unusual on talk radio prior to Browne’s
arrival. In the 1970s, some would even pop up on FM rock stations late
at night to delve into the psychoses of those late night denizens. But
she took what was often a “freak show” and developed it into
a program of problem solving that not only attempted to achieve its goal
of helping people with their interpersonal relationships, but that fit
the programming needs of the modern talk radio medium.
Her clinical training helps her see through the fog of peoples’
issues and her excellent broadcast skills allow her to turn her program
into something valuable for the medium and those she helps. One of the
most listened-to radio talk show hosts in America year after year, on
the WOR Radio Network is not only successful, but highly respected for
her class and reason.
